Limiting Parliament coverage to 15 media organisations arbitrary, discriminatory and against the very spirit of parliamentary reforms

The limiting of coverage of the November budget parliamentary session to 15 media organisations is arbitrary, discriminatory and against the very spirit of parliamentary reforms which should inform all parliamentary decisions.
This decision is particularly unacceptable as the selected 15 media organisations are not the top 15 media organisations if the people of Malaysia have a say in choosing them.
In any event, this decision should not be made by parliamentary administrators but should be made by the Dewan Rakyat House Select Committee, which is entrusted with the task “to consider and advise Tuan Yang di-Pertua upon all matters connected with the comfort and convenience of and services and amenities available to members of the House” Under Standing Order 79 (1). I am making a third call on the Prime Minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, to convene an emergency zoom Cabinet meeting to channel all resources to fight the third wave of Covid-19 pandemic in Sabah.
If there is no response from Muhyiddin, I will next call for his resignation for gross incompetence and ineptitude of his Cabinet.
The question will also arise whether a Prime Minister or Minister who is on a 14-day home quarantine should be regarded as going on leave and should not be functioning from the four walls of his residence. Read the rest of this entry »

The Yang di Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah has repeated his call to not plunge the country into another round of political uncertainty amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.
In accordance with the Yang di Pertuan Agong’s advice to avoid political uncertainty amidst the Covid-19 pandemic, Malaysians should be especially alert to the blizzard of fake news and false impressions perpetrated by social media influencers.
A good case in point is the Coverage report yesterday making use of a four-year-old report to manufacture the false impression that I support DAP working with Najib Razak and Zahid Hamidi to form a new national government to replace the Muhyiddin Yassin backdoor government. The Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister, Mohd Khairuddin Aman Razali should be referred to the Committee of Privileges when Parliament meets on November 2, 2020 for violating the Covid-19 SOP and threatening the health and lives of Members of Parliament with his wilful attendance of Parliament on July 13, 14 and 16 when he should be on 14-day home quarantine on his return from Turkey on July 7.
Will the Prime Minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin move such a motion?
Or is Muhyiddin being held to ransom by Khairuddin and other PAS Ministers and Deputy Ministers, as the Muhyiddin government will fall if PAS withdraws support, especially at a time when UMNO is mulling to quit the Perikatan Nasional government and wants a new deal? Read the rest of this entry »

Malaysia is now in the midst of an unprecedented political tornado.
The next six-and-half weeks will see plots, sub-plots, counter-plots and counter-sub-plots emerging from the woodworks over the shape and form of the government of Malaysia – as the present backdoor Muhyiddin government which emerged from the byzantine Sheraton Move conspiracy lacks the legitimacy, capability and resources to be an effective government.
This is why in the first public pronouncement by the former Prime Minister and UMNO President, Datuk Seri Najib Razak since he was toppled in the 14th General Election on May 9, 2018, explaining why UMNO should drop support for Bersatu, he griped that UMNO is blamed for the third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic in Malaysia as a result of the Sabah state general election when it was solely the fault of Bersatu. Early this morning, I received a message asking whether a Coverage report with the heading “DAP Lim Kit Siang : ‘To Save Malaysia, I Am Prepared To Work With Najib To Restore Democracy & Implement Key Reforms’ ” dated October 15, 2020 came from me.
This was my reply: “It’s a very qualified statement where principles and national objectives take priority. Yes I am prepared to work with Najib to save Malaysia – but how can this be done when he is not prepared to admit the 1mdb scandal?”

In the National Security Council (NSC) reconsideration of the decision to impose conditional movement control order (CMCO) for two weeks on Selangor, KL and Putrajaya from tomorrow, let the NSC Chairman who is also the Prime Minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, explain whether the government’s Covid-19 pandemic strategy is “mitigation” to flatten the curve to minimise economic and social disruption or “suppression” to ensure zero Covid-19 infection and zero fatality.
This is important so that Malaysians can understand the rationale behind the various Covid-19 measures, in particular the latest decision to impose a two-week CMCO for Selangor, KL and Putrajaya. Read the rest of this entry »
Call for reconsideration of the decision to impose CMCO for two weeks on Selangor, KL and Putrajaya from Wednesday

The Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari disagreed with the decision to impose a conditional movement control order (CMCO) on the entire state as many districts are still under control with regard to the Covid-19 pandemic.
From the latest data from the Selangor Covid-19 Task Force dated yesterday, out of 56 Mukim in Selangor, only one (Klang) is a red zone with 53 cases, 18 mukim are yellow zones with cases ranging from two to 32 cases, and 37 mukim are green zones without a single case of Covid-19 infection.
To impose a lock down on the 18 yellow zone mukim and 37 green zone mukim – which represent an overwhelming majority in Selangor – is definitely an over-reaction.

I am disappointed that the Prime Minister, Tan Sri Muhyddin Yassin has not summoned an emergency zoom meeting of his Cabinet on the grave situation of the third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic in Malaysia although he is in home quarantine until Oct. 16,
Yesterday, a specialist with the Health Ministry wrote an anonymous letter to Malaysiakini lamenting that “the many months of hard work since the first movement control order (MCO) has been taken for granted and thrown away”.
This has sparked a response from the Health Director-General Dr. Hisham Noor Abdullah, which does not detract in any way from the central message of the “specialist” to the Prime Minister, i.e. Wake up, enough talk, take action! Read the rest of this entry »

Who cannot be moved after reading the anonymous Open Letter to the Prime Minister by one of the Health Ministry specialists and published by Malaysiakini.
As the specialist wrote:

KDM makes history in Sabah in having two Deputy Chief Ministers, but is this good only for Jeffrey and Joachim or also good for the million-strong KDM communities, only time will tell

The Kadazan-Dusun-Murut (KDM) communities made history in the 2020 Sabah state general election as for the first time in the history of Sabah, they have two Deputy Chief Ministers – STAR president, Dr. Jeffrey Kitingan and PBS Vice-President Joachim Gunsalam.
But whether this is good only for Jeffrey and Joachim or also good for the million-strong KDM communities, only time will tell.
But it has not been a good start for the KDM communities.

Sad and shocking that Sabah Chief Minister tested positive for Covid-19 – let his 26-year promise to resolve the problem of illegal immigrants and eradicate corruption in Sabah and to reduce poverty and illiteracy in Sabah to zero be the agenda of his Cabinet

I am sad and shocked that the Sabah Chief Minister, Hajiji Mohd Noor, has been tested positive for Covid-19 to become the first head of state government in Malaysia to be infected with the disease.
His public relations secretary Effendi Mohamed Sunoh said Hajiji, 65, is now receiving treatment at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kota Kinabalu, and his health is good and stable.
Effendi said although Hajiji is receiving treatment, he is still conducting his duties and responsibilities at the place of treatment through phone calls and video conferencing and the state government functions as usual.

Malaysians sighed with relief at the report that there has been a fourth day of downward decline in the number of Covid-19 cases yesterday – 354 cases following 375, 489 and 691 cases in the previous three days – although they are shocked at the news of six fatalities in Sabah, probably the largest number of deaths in Malaysia because of Covid-19 in a single day!
Globally, the Covid-19 pandemic has chalked up another grim record yesterday when the global daily increase reached an all-time high of 348,774 cases.
Instead of the number of daily Covid-19 infections descending, we are seeing the graph rising ever upwards, a grim reminder that we are far from seeing light at the end of the tunnel. Read the rest of this entry »

The call by the Sabah Women’s Action Resource Group (SAWO) to Sabah nominated Assembly members to resign to give way to women deserves serious consideration.
SAWO has put up an invincible case for its call, lamenting that “Today marks a dark day for women in Sabah as their status and position in the state has reached rock bottom”, expressing anger and disappointment that there are no women ministers in the new Sabah cabinet.

Two months ago during the last parliamentary meeting, I asked whether the Prime Minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and the Health Minister, Dr. Adham Baba whether they will give top priority to ensure that a Parliamentary Select Committee on Covid-19 would be set up to monitor the public heath, economic and nation-building crisis of Covid-19.
It is a serious dereliction of duty by both the Prime Minister and the Health Minister that this has not been done, resulting in a leadership vacuum to inspire public trust and confidence to rally all Malaysians, regardless of political affiliation, to wage a single-minded war against the Covid-19 virus for the public health wellbeing of the country, as well as to ensure a sustainable bounce-back of the Malaysian economy after the ravages of over seven months of the Covid-19 pandemic. Even more important, to ensure that the process of nation-building is given top priority.
At that time, the cumulative global total of Covid-19 infections had just passed the 20 million mark.

Support for proposal by Andrew Khoo that in view of the Covid-19 pandemic, a Warisan candidate should take the seat uncontested

I support the proposal by the Co-Chairman of the Bar Council’s Constitutional Law Committee Andrew Khoo who urged political parties to stay out of the coming Batu Sapi polls and allow a Warisan candidate to take the seat uncontested for the sake of the health and safety of the electorate in the constituency, which is located in Sandakan, as well as for the sake of the people of Sabah and Malaysia.
The Bar Council’s constitutional law committee co-chair said a Warisan candidate winning uncontested would preserve the status quo in Parliament.
Khoo said politicians from both sides of the divide should put aside their differences to show they care about the Covid-19 surge currently faced by the rakyat.

The Prime Minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin must have attracted record viewership in his live Facebook address yesterday, but it was the worst live speech he had made since becoming “backdoor” Prime Minister on March 1.
Adverse, anxious and angry reactions were immediate on the social media when he referred to himself as “Abah” and jokingly threatened to “use the cane” if people won’t comply with the government’s SOP to curb the disease – as it was as plain as day that he was guilty of “double standards” while proclaiming that there would be “no double standards” over the Covid-19 SOP.
Public anger was palpable as a one-year told child was reported dead from Covid-19, the youngest to die from the outbreak in the country.

The Prime Minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddih Yassin’s assurance in his Facebook live address that there would be “no double standards” over Covid-19 SOP would be convincing if he had explained what has happened to the long-standing breach of quarantine SOP by the Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Khairuddin Aman Razali on his return from Turkey on July 7.
Malaysians are still waiting for the Prime Minister to show leadership and example in Khairuddin’s case.

Malaysia has joined the United States with Covid-19 infections invading the top precincts of government – with our Ministers’ Cluster joining the White House Cluster to illustrate the hazards of high office.
In Malaysia, the Cabinet has been affected with one Minister confirmed as down with Covid-19 infection and five Ministers in quarantine including the Prime Minister himself undergoing a 14-day home quarantine as directed by Home Surveillance Order (HSO) issued by the Health Ministry.
In Washington, US President Donald Trump returned from the Walter Reed National Medical Military Centre to the White House, which has become a centre for contagion partly because of disregard for mitigation measures, to peel off his mask to convert his still-ongoing disease into a show of strength. However, despite his longstanding practice of denying the pandemic’s severity and downplaying its risks, there are more than 200,000 Americans dead and 7.5 millions Americans infected as well as over a dozen of Trump’s top aides tested positive for Covid-19. When I wrote in my media statement on March 20, 2020, that “Global news about the Covid-19 pandemic continues to be bleak and ominous”, nobody had expected that after more than six months, global news about the Covid-19 pandemic would be many times more bleak and ominous.
At that time, Italy reached a new milestone when its deaths linked to the virus soared to 3,405, exceeding the toll of 3,248 deaths in China, where the virus first broke out.
The spread of Covid-19 in Italy had been swift and terrifying, even after the country imposed strict limits on people’s movements. As the death toll rose, traditional funeral services were outlawed as part of the national restrictions against gatherings.
