“Babi” invective in Parliament – sad reflection on failure of 50 yrs of nation-building

The “babi” invective by an UMNO MP in Parliament yesterday is a most sad and shocking reflection that 50 years after Merdeka, there are Umno political leaders who are still very deeply-ingrained in communal thinking and prejudices, making them poor models of a Bangsa Malaysia.

I admit that I had lost my cool when I was badgered and heckled the whole afternoon yesterday when I had sought clarifications during the Ministerial winding-up of the debate on the Royal Address.

The badgering from Barisan Nasional MPs had started when I sought clarification from the Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak on integrity issues concerning the award of contracts in the national service training programme, the mega-commission scandals in defence purchases such as US$100 million for Sukhoi jets from Russia and US$120 million for submarine from France and it continued when I had sought clarification from the Deputy Internal Security Minister, Datuk Johari Baharun, whether on the serious corruption allegations which had been made against the Deputy Minister in the “freedom for sale” scandal, the most basic failure in police reform when police still refused to accept police reports or the issue of abuse of detention-without-trial powers under the Emergency Ordinance.

When BN MPs from Umno, MCA and Gerakan continued to try to drown out my attempts to seek clarification from Johari, I lost my patience and told BN MPs who did not want to listen to the clarifications which were public interest issues to “mampus” and leave the House.

I accepted the Deputy Speaker, Datuk Lim Si Cheng’s ruling that the term “mampus” was unparliamentary and had no hesitation in withdrawing the term.

In the heated atmosphere in Parliament, the Umno MP for Dungun, Datuk Rosli Mat Hassan hurled the “babi” invective against me.

Although Rosli subsequently withdrew the “babi” invective, it is a most shocking episode which should be the subject of deep reflection not only by MPs regardless of party but also by all Malaysians — as it demonstrated a most abject failure after 50 years of nation-building.

Exchanges between MPs from both sides of the House during heated moments are not uncommon but there can be no justication in the use of invectives which are racist and communalistic.

When I used the word “mampus” under great provocation, which I regret using, it was addressed to all BN MPs, whether Umno, MCA, Gerakan or MIC, as it was made in disgust at the repeated heckling by BN MPs to stop me from seeking clarifications from the front-bench. There was no tinge of communalism at all.

But when Rosli responded with the “babi” invective, it was purely communal in nature, directed only at only one community, the Chinese. Coming from an Umno MP who is supposed to be more sophisticated than the ordinary run of Umno MPs, and holding the post of MARA chairman, it is a sad reflection of an importang failure of Malaysian nation-building after 50 years, as it is proof that there are Umno MPs who continue to set the worst examples of communal thinking and prejudices.

I encountered a similar incident of a racist UMNO politician just recently at Permas Jaya. Our resident committee had on January 24th. submitted a memorandum to Majlis Bandaraya Johor Bahru on the need for a gated neighbourhood. We included statistics of crimes i.e. break-ins, robbery, snatch-theft, drug addicts and even a drug labs, etc reported in our neighbourhood for the past year with supporting letters of local residents and relevant documents. Out of 280 houses, 235 homes subscribed to the security programme. The fences and security barriers were constructed and operations commenced on February 1st. Chinese New Year was celebrated with peace of mind. However, our peaceful slumber was disturbed when on March 21st., the city council enforcement officers came to rip-off our security barrier. Had it not been for the intervention of our alert residents they would have proceeded to demolished all our gates and fences. YB Khaled Nordin’s PA, Tuan Hj Baharrudin’s help was sought and he contacted YB Datuk Ibrahim, the council rep. for Kawasan Permas. He in turned spoke to Datuk Bandar and the operation was stopped.
A hastily scheduled meeting with the residents was convened on Sat. 24th March. The residents showed up in full force. Tn. Hj Baharuddin addressed everyone eloquently with sweet words and praises reassuring us that Datuk Ibrahim has our interest at heart and would support our efforts for security. Datuk Ibrahim next empathised with us by sharing his personal trauma with 7 Indonesian robbers who broke into his house three years ago. He explained that on the fateful day of March 21st, he was invited for breakfast and was informed by the enforcement head that an operation to demolish security gates will be conducted in Permas Jaya. Whe he asked if notice was served the answer was affirmative. He then did not enquire further on the matter. He confessed that since he had just taken up the position he was not aware of our resident committee until he was notified after the demoliton exercise. When the issue was opened to the floor, many residents took the opportunity to voice their grievances on the trees not being pruned, unkempt bushes, uncut grass, poorly maintained playground and clogged/blocked drains, etc. A school teacher chided the Majlis for not encouraging our efforts as this lightens the burden of the police, reducing crime and promoting a peaceful neighbourhood. Albeit paide for by the residents themselves! One resident said pointedly that we pay assessments and exclaimed, “Adakah Majlis untuk rakyat? atau rakyat untuk Majlis?” A young Malay man stood up and started ranting and gesticulating angrily at the VIP. Apparently, on the day when the gate was demolished, a drug addict hid in the abandoned house next to his. He was at work whilst his wife was home alone tending to a child and a baby. A former headmaster, an Indian man spoke out against the charade that played out before us accusing the two VIPs of ‘sudah berpakat’ and putting on a show. Many others added on to the issues at hand. When Datuk Ibrahim replied to the issues raised, he inadvertantly blurted, “Tadi ada seorang keling……(everyone gasped)..India, minta maaf salah ucap……..” There were Chinese media reporters present who will attest to what I mentioned here. I have lost complete and utter respect for such racist, discriminatory and tactless politicians. It has been two weeks after the meeting and I am glad to report that the security barrier is back up again, hopefully cost borned by the city council.

Did the MCA MPs aware that they are being called “babi” indirectly? Even if they were aware, most likely they will accept whatever names UMNOputras MPs address them.

I thot “babi” was usually being used by others to label the malays? Well, I was wrong. Anyway, this is how the whole bunch of corrupted ministers work when their misdeeds are exposed and they can only do one thing in common ie to drown out the allegations and hope that the matter will be swept aside.

Till now no one has really scritinsed the whole commission thingy from the purchased of subs and jets. It goes to show many mouths hv been fed and as usual… such deals are the norm of the day under AAB’s admin. But what can he do? He has yet to answer some of the allegations made against him as well. Monkey see, monkey do lo.

The use of the word ‘swine’ (meaning ‘babi’) was defended by a poster here not too long ago. The expression, “You swine” or “Kau babi” is unacceptable and is derogatory wherever it is used, however it is used – in Parliament or out of P’ment.

Whereas “Kau mampus lah sana” are fighting words not nearly as derogatory as “Kau babi” – equivalent to “Damn you”.

It is a word in universal usage of the English speaking world, to insult someone. Malays likewise use the Malay translation of the word ‘pig’ or ‘swine’ to insult not just non-Malays and non-Muslims but by their wives against them i.e. among themselves.

So let’s not exaggerate the racial connotation of the word ‘pig’ or ‘swine’.

If we list all the obcene and crude utterance and behaviour of our MPs (remember Pahang MP ‘finger’ gesture?), we could fill an entire website. So its not surprising.

What is sad and a measurement of the leadership standard of our government is that with 91% majority, there exist no one who can debate Sdr. Lim’s criticism almost all the time.

With the exception of Zaid Ibrahim of Kelantan, I have yet to hear any decent argument coming out of the other MPs – ever.

    What’s new?

Last year, Nazri screamed ‘racist, racist, racist’ in, I thought an unprovoked situation.

    This year, Rosli screamed “pig”.

    Next year…????

UMNO and BN actually wallows in the mud of communal politics. This is why MACHAP must be a ‘do or die’ campaign!

Machap voters must come out and prove that the pigs fit enough to be the lords in ‘ANimal Farm”.

The disgusting behaviour of UMNO MPs won’t change easily…not in the next GE, or even the next. I am quite certain they have a 2/3 majority amongst their political ranks today who suffer from some very severe form of psychoses which gives rise to this kind of warped mentality.

    Dear Sir,

With due respect, you are as guilty as the BN MP mentioned. THe word you used was as invective as the word he used. You have rightly titled this post about nation building to which your goodself has shot yourself by using that rude word in Parliament. Both you and that BN MP are neck deep in sin for using words that is never going to help our nation’s progress. You have, in your previous posts, advocated for a first world Parliament in which your conduct in our august house do not reflect what you preach.

By no means am I defending that BN MP. I am merely pointing out the obvious. Mr. Lim, are you ignoring the elephant in your own room while pointing to his? You, as an experienced politician, should know or perhaps are already too familiar with the conduct of BN MPs save for the few souls there. I would expect you, as the leader of the opposition, who is spearheading the checks on the government to lead by example not to use words that may provoke an equally bad retaliatory words or conduct.

Rhetoric must especially in Parliament be conducted in a civil manner. Though the BN MPs are not practicing it, I think it would be definately helpful to you and DAP’s cause to at least act in a civil and yest assertive manner. Putting a person one’s debating against to shame and embarassment do not require the use of derogatory words. Getting your point across too do not require the usage of rude words.

Last but not least, rhetoric is neither bestowed, nor wholly acquired, but cultivated. Dear Mr. Lim, for a politician of your years of experience, you could surely behave better.

The unspoken objective of UMNO is basically to “undo” 450 years of “colonisation” and get hold of 100% control of Malaysia. UMNO wants Chinese and Indians and other minority races completely out of the picture. They are happy to see Chinese and Indians leave Malaysia back to their homeland or elsewhere for “better” prospect. They are now talking about taking over the vacuum left by the Chinese and Indians. This partly explains why they are so “biadap” towards non-bumis, and do not have any conscience about encroaching into the social, economic, and religious rights of the non-bumis. Yes, non-bumis are “babi” at the back of their minds.

Hey, this is the Year of the Pig, Babi, Boar, Khinzir or whatever. Here’s is an interesting item from Islam Hadhari website.

Menefestasi Budaya Disebalik Pengharaman Khinzir Dalam Islam

This would be called labelling. My impression of a politician is that he she is articulate, wise and must be much more qualified than the rest of the nation’s citizens. Or else it will be a case of a blind man leading another blind man and both are never taught how to live a blind man’s life. Since the status of a politician has fallen, it is not shocking to see the deteriorating quality of the public service. Actually a babi is no great deal to a muslim. He she can be forgiven for eating that.

  26. #26 by Godamn Singh on Wednesday, 4 April 2007 - 11:25 pm

    Goddamn it!

I hope the following puts the issue into some context.

(with the courtesy of cut and paste)

“The Jews and Christians are also forbidden from eating pork. Here is a quote from the Old Testament to that effect: “And the swine, because it divideth the hoof, yet cheweth not the cud, it is unclean unto you: ye shall not eat of their flesh, nor touch their dead carcase.” Deuteronomy 14:8

Many Christians believe that this verse was directed only at the Jews. But Jesus himself says during the Sermon on the Mount; “Think not that I am come to destroy the Law, or the Prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill.” Some Christians say that, after a vision by St. Peter, God cleansed all animals and made them fit and lawful for human consumption. If ALL animals are cleansed by Peter’s vision, this includes dogs, cats, vultures, and rats: but you just don’t see people getting excited about a cat-meat sandwich like they do over barbecued pork or bacon. Others say that it was Paul who rescinded the law forbidding pork to humans, in order to appease the Romans, who enjoyed the taste of pig-meat. Many excuses have been given, but none are very sound.

Many Far Eastern traditions also discourage the eating of pork. The 3,000 year old Confucian Book of Rites says, “Agentleman does not eat the flesh of pigs and dogs.” Although many Chinese are avid eaters of pork today, physicians of ancient China recognized pork-eating as the root of many human ailments. Buddhists, Jains and Hindus usually avoid eating any kind of meat.

It is not just the Muslims who do not eat pork. Get that straight will ya???

Here is a letter written by a Malaysian Indian to the Prime Minister of India on what is happening in Malaysia.

An Open Letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

    Dear Dr. Singh,

I write this to you not only as a citizen appealing to the leader of her nation, but as a non-resident Indian outraged and frightened by the atrocities committed against her heritage and religion – and the heritage or religion of millions of others – in the nation of her residence.

The past few months have brought with them a rash of demolitions of Hindu temples in Malaysia. By “rash”, I mean an indeterminate but sizable number. By “rash”, I indicate a deliberate official concealing of the actual figure.

The official excuses for these run along the lines of clearing areas for highway development and the lack of proper licences. But the sheer enthusiasm by which these demolitions are carried out – demonstrated by their rapidly increasing number and frequency as well as the unnecessary measures often undertaken, such as the torching of the temple structure and the defacement of statues of deities within – negates them. A suspiciously mute media further contradicts such pretexts.

Most of these attacks have occurred by dawn, literally ambushing worshippers within. At least one attack – on the 60-year old Sri Balamuniswarar Alayam in Setapak on June 8 2006 – resulted in the arrests of people who attempted to stop the demolition. This same attack resulted in injuries for some of the arrested – injuries which they were later forced to confess in writing as having been self-inflicted. A priest in that temple suffered a heart attack from the sight of it being desecrated.

This is the story of only one temple.

I cannot tell you how many temples, or stories, there are, because no one knows the real number. No one, perhaps, but the authorities carrying out what is clearly a secret, sinister agenda.

I ask you this: what excuse do you give us for your silence?

The Government of India has thus far taken no official stand on the issue. This is not for lack of knowing. Although the available information about these demolitions remains little, almost all the non-Internet media that has picked up on the situation has been from India. These are state-sanctioned demolishings, not the work of small factions of zealots. The Government of India has a responsibility, particularly because of its relationship with the Government of Malaysia, to respond.

When the Taliban destroyed the Bamiyan Buddhas in 2001, the Indian government, along with academics and former state officials, responded with the outrage demanded of the situation.

Some months back, the Government of India sent an official criticism to the Government of Denmark regarding the publication in a Danish newspaper of cartoons insulting the Prophet Muhammad, resulting in the cancellation of Danish PM Anders Fogh Rasmussen’s official visit to India at that time.

Denmark and India have a strong history of bilateral relations, from Prime Ministerial visits to Copenhagen in 1957, 1983 and 2002 to total, direct Danish investment inflows to India since 1981 having reached approximately US$148 million at the end of September 2005 (according to the website of the Indian embassy in Denmark).

Malaysia and India, too, have had many successful bilateral exchanges over the decades. By an interesting coincidence, the
manufacturing-based foreign direct investment from India to Malaysia now also amounts to US$148 million (according to Malaysia’s Deputy Prime Minister Dato’ Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak at an India-Malaysia CEO forum in Mumbai on June 9 2006).

As simplistic as it sounds, it’s almost as if all those millions of US dollars from Denmark – a country whose religious insensitivity India officially condemned – were poured straight into Malaysia – a country whose religious despotism India is curiously, confoundingly silent on.

The rights of ethnic Indians and other minorities in this country are crumbling, like our temples, as I write this.

2.05 million people of Indian descent may be a tiny number, when compared against the 1 billion and counting whom you, as prime minister, are officially responsible for.

But I ask you this: when temples that stood for over a century are destroyed, what really dies? Not stone and statues. Not bells and prayers. Not – thankfully and thus far – people. You see, what frightens me is not the loss of these temples themselves, though architecturally speaking, that too is often a disappointment. What frightens me is what these temples are taken to represent, and by extension, what their demolitions therefore represent.

As I write this, I am grasping in the dark as to the actual number of temples that have been demolished, torched or otherwise desecrated in the past six months alone. Numbers I have read range anywhere from 10 to 20. Why are these numbers so nebulous? If the authorities carrying out these attacks are doing so with fully defendable reasons, why the secrecy? Why the media blackout, through which only wavering, surreptitious glimpses insinuate at a growing crisis?

I write to you because I feel as though the country in which I live, and in which 8% of the population trace their roots back to India, is teetering on the brink of religious and ethnic calamity. I write to you in an atmosphere darkened by the shadow of the pre-genocidal.

I write to you because I am afraid.

    Yours sincerely,

    Sharanya Manivannan

    Strange!!

Strange to see a Malaysian writing to the Prime Minister of India, a sovereign state, for intervention in what is an internal matter.

Can I now write to President Bush asking him for help? How about a regime change for Malaysia?? Ask the U.S. Congress for assistance – perhaps a redeployment of U.S. troops from Iraq to Malaysia?

A Malaysian Indian turning to the elected representative of a foreign country for help!! Shouldn’t she be writing to Samy Vellu?

This is stale material and has been in circulation for some time now.

Who says it takes a person of high IQ to succeed in politics and be a good and effective leader? President Bush has an average SAT score of 1,201 but ends up in Harvard and holds an MBA.

The truth is IQ as represented by such Scholastic Aptitude Test scores has little to do with ability to lead.

On the other hand, there are thieves today who have Ph. Ds if not MBAs. We are lucky not to have those sitting on our Cabinet right now. We are lucky to have a leader with a BA Honors in Religious and Malay Studies who rules and manages the country by inspiration’ not even ‘by crisis’ ( since he does not know a crisis when he sees one) – and religious inspiration at that!

God willing he will see us through!

Some criminals who made hate speech and threatening aggression, hatred or violence are now in the positions of power and influence.

Besides Islamic terrorism, extremism and fundamentalism, their influence could be the greatest threat to the country’s progress and development.

    Uncle Lim,

There is one thing u have not done yet. Yes, I know when provoked and people get emotional, things were let loose. The one thing I said havent been done is laugh. If I were you, during the Parliamentary meeting, I would laugh at them so loud and tell them that they are totally incompetent and useless, therefore you should call them bahan ketawa, since they call out babi, then you should say it back, Daging babi, SEDAPPPP.

You might say, this is immature and silly, but eventually it has boiled down to that, so why not enjoy it and insult them more and more and laugh at them for their stupidity.

  41. #41 by ENDANGERED HORNBILL on Thursday, 5 April 2007 - 9:55 am

With BN generally, and UMNO particularly – what could best describe their character but these sage words form Shakespeare:

ALL: “Fair is foul, and foul is fair:
Hover through the fog and filthy air.”

Macabre and witch-inspired, there is no morals in the darksome, nether world of politics much like in witchcraft( remeber Mona Fandey’s case). All is fair game i.e. by fair means or foul, the ends justify the means. That was not only Machiavelli, Mussolini, Mahathir, Mad Mad Rasputin, now Muddled Muddled (U)MNO, MCA, MIC and many more.

When morals go out the windows, political incest enters through the front door. It’s horrific, horrendous, hellish – the thought that evil can so disposses a politician of his faculties that he would be prepared to screw his mother to get her purse. Nauseatingly unthinkable, hideously repulsive, disgustingly revulsive!

MAchap and Ijok – begin the clean-up by kicking BN out of the State Assemblies – Malacca and Selangor. Let’s roll.

i was watching the news yesterday about it. i was really really embarrassed with these ‘so-called’ leaders of us. they fight like a kid for something which i think can be resolved in a peaceful way, something which a simple but detailed answer can be given. the only person who thinks rationally is the ‘chairman’ of this gangster style meeting.

it’s such a sad thing to see ppl fighting for power. i do not think they are fighting for us, the citizen but for themself. the opposition was fine but i hope that this will last, i will vote for them but hopefully they will not behave like the bn’s after they had the power.

Again, this is a product of malay chauvinism a.k.a. ketuanan melayu. In recent years, I find that the malay no longer practices their much vaunted malay politeness. Has the malay been so influenced by a mamak (Dr M) that he no longer practices his basic culture? If so, victory to the Indian…..

I think you dont really get my meaningof this laugh.
Yes not all PhD can be a minister, but nor we hope for a lousy leader here.

Just to remind, the ERA of Lim Goh Tong have outdated where people nowaday are putting more concern on education in getting success. Education is an asset to country, and this is the reason we have half past six goverment ruling this country and always come out with stupid rule.

Those who can seat comfortly as a minsiter not because they are smart enough to be, but merely they are smart enough to polish apple to their leader.

Mind you, the current deputy CM of Penang was a postman, and in what way do you thinka postman can rule Penang?

have imagine you take along your SPM pangkat 3 result go to YTL Corporation telling the HR you are here to apply for a Director position…what would you get.

It is indeed a sad reflection of failure of Malaysian nation-building after 50 years under the ruling coalition.

We can see day in day out here in Malaysia, Umno MPs and for that the Malays, will continue to persevere to set the glittening examples of communal thinking and prejudices, especiallly when they are under pressure, they just bloated and burst.

They still lack the depth and intelligence after 50 years of state protection in every aspects of their life, from cradle to the tomb, so really can’t blame them; only trying to pity them, simply because they are made up of that kind of inferior stuff.

  50. #50 by RealWorld on Thursday, 5 April 2007 - 9:19 pm

The ‘babi’ remark still wont change the fact that DAP is heading for a thrashing in the coming Machap by-election.

The rakyat will still vote for stability and development.

  51. #51 by penangkia on Friday, 6 April 2007 - 12:13 am

the remark is indeed something from an un-wise leader. sometimes, i just feel their remarks in the parliament is down grading the status/image of the country, ministers who are suppose to serve the people, shout in the parliament as if they are in the wet market. One word to describe, SUB-standard..

Is that the way ministers act?shame on themself.and a brief compare between the politicians of malaysia and singapore. their qualification is like hell and heaven. come on, they have nothing to say and brought up all issues which is unimportant at all..

The amused question is…Why majority of malaysians still continue to support such leaders??they are leading us into deep shit. Malaysians are blind??or they are not sensitive about everything happening and just bother about the so-called last minute appearance of power-fool leaders in the election area??

  52. #52 by sj on Friday, 6 April 2007 - 6:51 am

Hmm, possible that is because Machap election involves cheating with money to buy vote, which comes out from the pocket of taxpayers themselves. Just like Kubang Pasu. With so much shit going on in the goverment if BN still win by a gap, it really tells you something is not right with the voting activity.

  53. #53 by DarkHorse on Friday, 6 April 2007 - 9:15 am

Funny enough the following posting appears on another blog – Malaysia Today:

    “Lim Kit Siandg Sir,

Your immediate job is to go to Machang and campaign like you never did before and get a win for DAP. It is utmost important that DAP win the Machang seat because only then, I repeat only then, the Government will start thinking. The BN is sitting on a comfort zone and they really don’t care what you say or don’t say in the Parliment. Your strength is the people on the street, the people of Machang now..

Lots of people are afraid of the BN election machinery.. DON’T. There is nothing impossible if we put our hearts and minds into a situation.

… and when you win the Machang seat, go proudly to the Parliment, look at the guy who called you a babi and tell him.. ‘Who is the Babi now!!???

  54. #54 by Jong on Friday, 6 April 2007 - 10:22 am

Looks like the BN guys have started distributing “goodies” in Machap, amongst them the promise that Machap will turn into another tourist destination, …..erhhh in ten, twenty years time, if it succeeds?

I hope Machapites are smart enough, will not fall for it.

  55. #55 by Not spoon fed on Saturday, 7 April 2007 - 10:53 pm

“Babi” or pig is good because it is a popular food in world most populous country like China.

It is also popular in advanced countries like Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, South Korea, etc.

So, let these “pig-minded” people or respectable MP voiced out loud about “babi” from his own brain and own mouth. Sounds like this MP’s head is full of the word “babi”.

Everyone know this country still could not progress well like resourceless Singapore. Malaysia is benidh Singapore 30 years. Shame to be here lah.

What to do? God give oil to them…they don;t have to work smart and hard.

““Babi” or pig is good because it is a popular food in world most populous country like China.”

It is also an ‘unclean animal’ if you go by the Bible, the first five chapters – Deuteronomy 14:”And the pig…Their flesh you shall not eat, and their carcasses you shall not touch.”

So Jews, and Muslims do not eat pork.

Today there is medical evidence that pork which has worms, if not cooked properly would give you diseases.

  58. #58 by Not spoon fed on Friday, 13 April 2007 - 10:44 pm

Yes, it is better not to eat pork or meat in order to lessen cholesterol level. Our liver changes saturated fat into cholesterol.

There are organic meat. There are organic beef, pork and chicken meat.
