In his article “Pandemic vs Endemic”, Dr. Mohamed Rafick Khan said he is more concerned and worried about corruption than the Covid-19 pandemic, as “corruption is so bad that it has gone to every level of society”.
He said: “It’s hard to comprehend that a person who give salam, praise the Lord, and pray five times a day has no issue to engage in corrupt practice.

On December 1, I asked whether Malaysia will overtake China with more cumulative total of Covid-19 cases before or after the end of the present Parliament meeting – Dewan Rakyat on Dec. 17 and Dewan Negara on Dec. 29, 2020.
Yesterday, Malaysia had a daily increase of 1,937 new Covid-19 cases, bringing the cumulative total to 82,246 cases.

Dewan Rakyat has a last week left for the November/December 2020 meeting before its adjournment — i.e. next Monday to Thursday, Dec. 14–17, 2020.
I regard the greatest failure of the November/December meeting of Parliament is its failure to set up two Select Committees — one on the Covid-19 pandemic and the other on Corruption and Integrity.
In fact, Parliament would be gravely negligence and irresponsible in not setting these two Select Committees, reflecting the Muhyiddin Cabinet as its kakistocratic worst. Read the rest of this entry »

I call on the Muhyiddin Cabinet to extend Parliament meeting by another day to allow the 2019 Suhakam annual report to be debated to prove that it is not a kakistocracy afraid of human rights issue, as well as to debate various motions to refer Members of Parliament to the Privileges Committee for their breaches of parliamentary privileges in the current meeting.
It would be most unfortunate if the country is wedged between a kleptocracy until May 9, 2018 general election and the kakistocracy resulting from the “Sheraton Move” plot in February 2020 which toppled the Pakatan Harapan Government which had tried to shake Malaysia off from the trajectory of a failed state, kleptocracy and kakistocracy. The Malaysian Parliament must act on Global Corruption Barometer for Asia 2020 released by Transparency International yesterday which reported that more Malaysians regard their MPs as corrupt as compared to the people of seven other Asian countries – Bangladesh, Taiwan, Myanmar, Philippines, China, Cambodia and Vietnam.
Transparency International reported that 36% of Malaysians surveyed think that Members of Parliament are corrupt, as compared to 18% in Bangladesh, 17% in Taiwan, 14% in Myanmar, 12% in the Philippines, 11% in China, 6% for both Cambodia and Vietnam. Read the rest of this entry »

For the past month, Malaysia had been haunted by the 1MDB financial scandal – with Goldman Sachs pleading guilty in the United States to violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act in the 1MDB scandal, “a massive global scheme to loot billions dollars” from Malaysians, and the 2021 Budget debate in the Dewan Rakyat where the former Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Razak soiled and stained Parliament for 90 minutes when he spoke as Barisan Nasional Backbenchers’ Club Chairman without explaining his role as “Malaysian Official 1 (MO1)” which plunged the country into unprecedented infamy, ignominy and iniquity.
Najib was convicted on July 28 in the first of a series of 1MDB-related charges of corruption, money-laundering and abuse of power and sentenced to 12 years’ jail and RM210 million fine.

At long last, we have official confirmation that former Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Razak was appointed as Barisan Nasional Backbenchers’ Club in Parliament on November 1, 2020.
Who appointed him? Why did MCA and MIC officials want Najib to be their leader and spokesman in Parliament?
This appointment is important and crucial for Malaysia, for it is a test case whether Malaysians have become numb to the 1MDB financial scandal which had made adverse international headlines for the past five years, and until the 14th General Election on May 9, 2018, was ruthlessly suppressed and censored locally by repressive and draconian measures, and insensitive as to whether Malaysia again becomes a kleptocracy. The appointment of former Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Razak, as Chairman of Barisan Nasional Backbenchers’ Club (BNBBC) has confronted all Malaysians with a moral crisis, bringing to the fore the issue of the 1MDB financial scandal and Malaysia becoming a kleptocracy.
This is the time for all patriotic politicians to take a stand against the 1MDB financial scandal and Malaysia becoming a kleptocracy.
It is really amazing that after a decade at the end of 2020, there are still political leaders especially in UMNO, MCA and MIC who are so enamoured with the 1MDB financial scandal that they are not prepared to condemn it straightaway, taking a very ambiguous position that it has still to be proven that 1MDB was a scandal, and to avoid altogether the subject of Malaysia becoming a kleptocracy. In the 14th General Election on May 9, 2018, Malaysians surprised themselves and the world by making a stand against kleptocracy and the 1MDB financial scandal, toppling the government which had made Malaysia synonymous with kleptocracy and the 1MDB financial scandal.
But is kleptocracy dead in Malaysia or will it make a come-back?
Has Malaysians learnt the lesson of the 1MDB financial scandal or will there be similar financial scandals looting billions of ringgit of taxpayers’ money and landing the country in international shame and infamy?
These are questions which have suddenly become very real and relevant this week, when it was announced that the former Prime Minister and kingpin of Malaysian kleptocracy and 1MDB financial scandal has been appointed as Chair of the Barisan Nasional Backbencher’s Club (BNBBC) in the Malaysian Parliament.

Parliament should not recognise former Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s appointment as BNBBC chair as it would plunge the Malaysian Parliament into a new shame and infamy.
Najib’s appointment is doubly shocking and shameful – proof that public integrity and anti-corruption are furthest from the principles and vision of UMNO, MCA and MIC
What makes the appointment doubly shocking and shameful is that it came three months after the July 28 conviction and sentence of Najib Razak to 12 years jail and fines of RM210 million for corruption, money-laundering and abuse of power charges in connection with the RM42 million SRC-1MDB case, and a week after Goldman Sachs pleaded guilty in the United States to violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, which bars U.S. companies from paying bribes to government officials abroad. Today the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) celebrates the 53rd anniversary of its establishment and one of its greatest challenges remains the public confidence problem that it is not independent and unable to discharge its duties professionally without “outside” interference.
What is surprising is that the MACC is surprised that it has a public perception problem about its independence and professionalism, as evidenced by the comments of its Chief Commissioner, Azam Baki.

Call on Sandakan voters to support the vision of Calvin Chong for an university in Sandakan

The Sabah general election on September 26 is a battle between conviction politics versus money politics, between vision and principles versus self-interests and the “frog” political culture.
Just now, the Elopura candidate for Warison and the incumbent DAP State Assemblyman for the area, Calvin Chong, spoke of his vision for Sandakan and among the things he want to see is an university in Sandakan.
This reminds me of my call for an university for Sabah some 30 years ago when nobody had advocated it, and now we have a Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) in Kota Kinabalu.
The time has come for a second university in Sabah and Sandakan is the appropriate place for the second Sabah university to be placed. Read the rest of this entry »

Is the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) aware of the identity of the “most powerful Malaysian political figure” referred to by Australian media Sydney Morning Herald, The Age and The Sun as implicated in the RM70 million MARA corruption scandal involving the transaction of Australian properties?
If so, why had no action been taken by the MACC against this “most powerful Malaysian political figure”; and if not, why the MACC had not sought information from its Australian counterpart in the Australian Federal Police investigating the case?
This has become the most pertinent question following the action by the Australian Federal Police seizing properties and cash worth Australian $1.6 million and the corruption prosecution of Australian property developer Dennis Teen last month over charges that he paid Malaysian government officials Australian $4.75 million in bribes to facilitate the purchase of a property development in Melbourne by MARA. Is the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) opening investigation on former Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai for approving Klang Valley Double Tracking(Phase 2)(KVDT2) project at RM5.265 billion as the present Transport Minister Wee Ka Siong says it costs only RM3.398 billion – a whopping difference of RM1.867 billion?
The Perikatan Nasional Government wanted to lay a trap for former Finance Minister and DAP Secretary-General, Lim Guan Eng when in a preplanned move in Parliament, the Finance Minister Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz told the UMNO MP for Pontian, Ahmad Maslan that a total of 101 projects with a procurement value of RM6.61 billion had been awarded through direct negotiations during the 22-month Pakatan Harapan government, giving the impression that corruption was involved – which was dutifully followed a statement by MACC the next day which said it was obtaining information from the finance ministry a list of the 101 projects to determine whether there exists elements of corruption, irregularities or abuse of power.
Guan Eng has pointed out that the Pakatan Harapan government was only responsible for 5.3 percent of the directly awarded contracts worth RM6.6 billion revealed by Tengku Zafrul, as most of the RM6.61 billion went to legacy projects (67.7 percent) and contracts for supplies or services (26.5 percent) taken on during the Barisan Nasional administration. Perdana Menteri Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin baru sahaja menyambut 100 hari pertama pemerintahan beliau yang telah menyaksikan gelombang kedua penularan wabak Covid-19 dalam negara dan pengembalian kleptokrasi dan kakistokrasi (sistem kepimpinan daripada kalangan individu yang tidak berkelayakan).
Jika tidak kerana Langkah Sheraton, kita tidak akan berhadapan dengan gelombang kedua penularan wabak ini yang telah menyebabkan perlunya dilaksanakan kawalan pergerakan.

Semalam, telah saya katakan, jika tidak kerana berlakunya Langkah Sheraton dan pergolakan politik yang tercetus daripadanya, Malaysia mungkin tidak akan menghadapi gelombang kedua wabak Covid-19 dalam negara kita. Ia telah mengorbankan 113 nyawa dan mencatatkan hampir 7,000 kes positif dalam negara serta kesan buruk terhadap kehidupan 32 juta rakyat Malaysia akibat pelaksanaan perintah kawalan pergerakan (PKP) dan PKPB.

Siapakah yang akan percaya 42 MP BN dan 18 MP PAS kini menyokong manifesto PRU14 Pakatan Harapan dan penangkapan Najib dan pimpinan BN — dan jika benar, adakah mereka akan mengumumkan perkara ini?
Parlimen dijadualkan untuk bersidang semula pada 9 Mac ini dan tarikh ini juga menandakan bulan ke-21 selepas pilihan raya bersejarah 9 Mei 2018, di mana seluruh dunia telah menyaksikan kepimpinan Malaysia dalam memperbaharui harapan dalam sistem demokrasi sedangkan berbagai negara menyaksikan pengunduran sistem demokrasi memberi ruang kepada rejim autokratik dan kleptokratik.
Namun begitu, adakah kerajaan Pakatan Harapan akan masih wujud pada 9 Mac 2020 ini, atau adakah kita dan seluruh dunia bakal menyaksikan Malaysia dalam satu keadaan yang buruk dan zalim di mana mandat rakyat yang diberikan pada 9 Mei 2018 untuk menyelamatkan negara ini dikhianati oleh sebuah kerajaan pintu belakang yang menggunakan nama Pakatan Harapan untuk membunuh Pakatan Harapan dan untuk menghalalkan kepulangan kleptokrasi ataupun lebih teruk lagi, kemunculan kakistokrasi di mana anasir yang paling teruk, paling tidak berkelayakan, dan paling tidak berprinsip menduduki jawatan tertinggi negara?
