Has the Securities Commission made history by ending an investigation which will spark a thousand other investigations?
In declaring that the Securities Commission (SC) “is unable to conclusively establish that a breach under Section 25(4) of the Securities Industry (Central Depositories) Act 1991 (SICDA) has occurred” with regard to the shareholding case of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Chief Commissioner Azam Baki, the Securities Commission has left open the question under what circumstances the SC will be able to “conclusively establish” whether SICDA has been breached or not. Azam Baki has just welcomed the Security Commission statement that it had concluded its enquiry into his shareholding and is unable to conclusively establish that a breach under section 25(4) of the Securities Industry (Central Depositories) Act 1991 (SICDA) and pledging that he will “continue my responsibility as the Chief Commissioner of MACC to fight corruption without fear or favour”.

If Azam Bani is not prepared to appear before the Parliamentary Select Committee in January itself, he should resign or go on leave immediately because he could not be an example of integrity in public service.

There is much speculation as to whether Johore state general election will be held after the Chinese New Year.
The possibility of a Johore state general election being held after the Chinese New Year cannot be ruled out as it is an open secret that after the Malacca and Sarawak state general elections, UMNO leaders are pressing for the 15th General Election to be held as early as possible and a Johore state general election will be a form of pressure by the UMNO leaders on Prime Minister Ismail Sabri to dissolve Parliament as soon as possible to hold the 15th General Election.

The Prime Minister, Ismail Sabri should not allow a parliamentary paralysis and schedule Thursday 27th January for a Special Parliament to discuss Azam-gate as Parliament cannot allow anyone, even if he is the MACC Chief Commissioner, to hold it to ransom from deciding important national questions.
Many issues on Azam-gate happened today.
First, the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) Chairman Wong Kah Woh rightly challenged the position of the Speaker, Azahar Azizan Harun that the Parliamentary Special Select Committee on Agencies under the Prime Minister’s Department cannot be open to the public and the media under the Dewan Rakyat Standing Orders except on one point. Malaysia would have performed better in fighting the Covid-19 pandemic if an emergency had not been declared on January 11 last year

I am shocked that the former Prime Minister, Muhyddin Yassin, is still trying to justify the declaration of Emergency on January 11, 2021 which completely undermined parliamentary oversight of the government in fighting the Covid-19 pandemic until the month of August and made Malaysia one of the worst performing nations in the world in the two-year battle with the Covid-19 pandemic.

The third DAP wave in Sarawak
The new Sarawak state committee elected yesterday will be responsible for launching the third DAP wave in Sarawak for a better Sarawak and a better Malaysia.

Sarawak DAP did poorly in the Sarawak state general election held last month.
I am disappointed with the results of the Sarawak state general elections as apart from Pandungan and Pending, I had expected DAP to win Kota Sentosa, Bukit Assek, Pelawan, Tanjong Batu and Pujut.
The Sarawak DAP should find out the reasons for the poor performance and the serious setback in the Sarawak state general election but even more important, focus on preparing for the forthcoming 15th General Election in Malaysia which should be held this year. Read the rest of this entry »

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Chief Commissioner Azam Baki could be jailed for contempt of Parliament if he defies the parliamentary subpoena to appear before the Parliamentary Select Committee on the Agencies under the Prime Minister’s Department on January 19 to clear himself of the conflict-of-interest allegations.
Azam was foolishly wrong when he said he was responsible only to the MACC Anti-Corruption Advisory Board (ACAB) when he owes a higher responsibility to Parliament and the people of Malaysia to be honest and upright as MACC Chief Commissioner.

The Inspector-General of Police Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani should explain why the police is investigating the Kulai Member of Parliament Teo Nie Ching over a four-year social media post in April 2017 – whether this is a reflection of police inefficiency or abuse of power under Ismail Sabri government.

Parliamentary Select Committee on Health, Science and Innovation should investigate into allegation by Bintulu MP Tiong King Sing that data on daily new Covid-19 cases and deaths were manipulated by “unseen hands”
The Bintulu MP Tiong King Sing had made various attacks on the Health Minister, Khairy Jamaluddin and the Health Director-General Noor Hisham Abdullah on their handling or mishandling of the two-year Covid-19 pandemic and it is for the duo to defend themselves from the various allegations made against them by the Prime Minister’s special envoy to China.
However, Tiong’s allegation about the integrity of the data on daily new Covid-19 cases and daily Covid-19 fatality numbers and that the data had been manipulated by “unseen hands” cannot be left unresolved, and must be investigated immediately by the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health, Science and Innovation so that the truth can be known. I welcome the meeting of the Parliamentary Special Select Committee (PSSC) on the Agencies under the Prime Minister’s Department on January 19, 2020 to discuss MACC Chief Commissioner’s Azam Baki’s share ownership in two public listed companies especially as the Dewan Rakyat secretary Nizam Mydin Bacha had made an error in judgment by writing to the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Parliament and Law) for consent to allow the PSC to meet.
To ensure that the national furore over Azam-gate could be resolved at the earliest available opportunity, I suggest that Azam should volunteer to appear before the PSCC on 19th January to answer any question on his conflict-of-interest allegations to clear himself of any doubt about the integrity of the MACC Chief Commissioner at the earliest opportunity – as it does not serve any national interest that the worst national crisis of confidence in the MACC about the integrity of the MACC Chief Commissioner should drag on for a single day. After two years, 2.8 million COVID-19 cases, 32,000 deaths and 60 million vaccine doses later, all Malaysians are tired and want to put the COVID-19 nightmare behind us. But this pandemic shows no signs of being over.
Omicron is hitting many countries in early 2022, causing re-infections in those previously infected with COVID-19 and breakthrough infections in those previously vaccinated. An elected representative who is doing a Masters programme in a local university asked me yesterday what I thought of the New Economic Policy.
I spoke about the New Economic Policy in my first speech in Parliament 51 years ago in February 1971 where I declared that the DAP supported affirmative policies to help the poor and the backward but it must be based on need but not on race.
I said that the DAP is “dedicated to the abolition of poverty and economic backwardness regardless of race” and that we want to create a “classless community of Malaysians based on fellowship, co-operation and service, where there is no exploitation of man by man, class by class or race by race”. There are no signs that the Prime Minister, Ismail Sabri will salvage his premiership from a kakistocracy-in-the-making by securing a Cabinet decision tomorrow to call a special Parliament next week to restore public confidence in the government’s anti-corruption programme and to debate and decide on the report of the Parliamentary Special Select Committee on Agencies in the Prime Minister’s Department on Azam-gate.
