If the trajectory of the daily increase of new Covid-19 cases in Malaysia is maintained, Malaysia will overtake China with more cumulative total of Covid-19 cases when Dewan Rakyat adjourns on Thursday – if not sooner in two days’ time by Wednesday.

On December 1, I asked whether Malaysia will overtake China with more cumulative total of Covid-19 cases before or after the end of the present Parliament meeting – Dewan Rakyat on Dec. 17 and Dewan Negara on Dec. 29, 2020.
Yesterday, Malaysia had a daily increase of 1,937 new Covid-19 cases, bringing the cumulative total to 82,246 cases.

Dewan Rakyat has a last week left for the November/December 2020 meeting before its adjournment — i.e. next Monday to Thursday, Dec. 14–17, 2020.
I regard the greatest failure of the November/December meeting of Parliament is its failure to set up two Select Committees — one on the Covid-19 pandemic and the other on Corruption and Integrity.
In fact, Parliament would be gravely negligence and irresponsible in not setting these two Select Committees, reflecting the Muhyiddin Cabinet as its kakistocratic worst. Read the rest of this entry »

The call by the Pakatan Harapan (PH) presidential council for a confidence motion on the Prime Minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, following the Fitch Ratings downgrade on Malaysia’s sovereign credit rating should be supported by all Members of Parliament, including from the Perikatan Nasional government MPs.
The Fitch Ratings downgrade cannot be simply ignored by the government and Parliament as the credibility and legitimacy of Muhyiddin as the eighth Prime Minister and his jumbo-sized Cabinet are at stake and they can only be secured whether by a confidence or no-confidence motion, so that the appellation of the Muhyiddin government as a “backdoor” government can be put to rest.

Today, December 1, 2020, marks one year since the first known patient showed symptoms of the disease in the Hubei provincial capital of Wuhan, China, according to a key study on the Covid-19 epidemic in the Lancet medical journal.

Malaysia has overtaken Singapore with more cumulative total of Covid-19 cases two days earlier than I had expected, and is heading to overtake China before Parliament ends in mid-December by current trajectories.
Malaysia is now ranked No.83 in the world among countries with the biggest cumulative total of 58,847 Covid-19 cases while Singapore is ranked No. 84 with 58,183 cases as its cumulative total.

The Health Minister, Adham Baba should tell Parliament in his winding-up speech on the 2021 Budget on Thursday why the Health Ministry is ignoring the World Health Organisation (WHO) advice to all governments to adopt an “all-of-government” and “whole-of-society” response and approach in the Covid-19 epidemic to the extent that the 7,000 general practitioners in the country felt sidelined.
For instance the WHO Regional Director South-East Asia, Dr. Poonam Khetrapal Singh said in April: “A more comprehensive approach is needed with communities at the center of our response. Most importantly, communities need to be engaged and empowered to take appropriate decisions and measures. The onus must be on each one. This has caused the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) president Dr. Subramaniam Muniandy to stress that the government health facilities should not be taking on this battle on its own as private healthcare is an important component in the country’s overall healthcare system and can add strength in managing the Covid-19 epidemic. The Prime Minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, should have asked Parliament for a consensus to amend the relevant laws to suspend the Batu Sapi parliamentary by-election on Dec. 5 in view of Covid-19 pandemic instead of asking the Yang di Pertuan Agong to declare an emergency in Batu Sapi to suspend the by-election.
The Election Commission announced the nomination and polling dates for the Batu Sapi by-election on 13th October, which means that the Muhyiddin government had 41 days to ask Parliament to amend the Constitution and the relevant election laws to suspend the Batu Sapi parliamentary by-election before Nomination on Nov. 23 because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Malaysia registered the second highest daily increase of Covid-19 cases yesterday – 1,290 new cases and four deaths to reach a cumulative total of 51,680 Covid-19 cases and 326 deaths.
If Covid-18 infection increases at the daily average of the past week, i.e. 1,127 cases a day, we are likely to overtake China by the end of the year as a country with more number of Covid-19 infections.
Today, China is placed No. 65th country with 86,381 Covid-19 cases, far behind eleven countries which have passed the million mark of Covid-19 cases, led by United States with over 12 million cases, India second with over 9 million cases, Brazil third with nearly six million cases, France fourth and Russia fifth with each country over two million cases. It was an unprecedented Deepavali this year – a new norm for Malaysian Hindus to celebrate the Festival of Lights for family members, friends and neighbours without the traditional Open House.
The question is whether Christmas in Malaysia and the world this year will also unprecedented. Further on – whether Thaipusam on 28th January 2021 and Chinese New Year on 12 February 2021 will also be unprecedented and will have to be celebrated under new norms with the continuing rampage of the Covid-19 pandemic.

There is no other dignified option than for the Malaysia’s Special Envoy to China and MP for Bintulu, Tiong King Sing, to apologise in Parliament on Monday for his very personal, malicious and cowardly attack on the Health Director-General Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah on Wednesday.
I agree with the Cuepacs President, Adnan Mat that Tiong had made an outrageous attack on Noor Hisham and had belittled the sacrifices of the civil servants who had been working tirelessly to curb the spread of Covid-19 in the country.
In fact, the statement by the Deputy Health Minister Datuk Noor Azmi Ghazali last night that it was irresponsible and unreasonable to condemn the credibility and sacrifices of Noor Hisham in dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic in the country had accentuated the mysterious role of the Health Minister, Dr. Adham Baba in this rumpus.

It is a staggering abdication of leadership and responsibility that as the Covid-19 epidemic in the United States rages nation-wide, there is a vacuum of leadership in the US government, as Donald Trump disappeared inside the White House ensconced with his family and advisers on how to win an election already declared lost. The MP for Bintulu, Tiong King Sing’s attack on the Health Director-General Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah in Parliament yesterday was not so simple and straightforward as it was a most cowardly and malicious, hiding behind a gross abuse of parliamentary privilege.
If it was not a malicious attack, why did’nt Tiong criticise the Heath Minister, Dr. Adham Baba who must bear full responsibility in Parliament for whatever happened in the Health Ministry?
Tiong had been a five-term Member of Parliament for 21 years since 1999. Is Tiong seriously suggesting that he is not aware that on all health matters, it is the Health Minister and not the Health Director-General who is answerable to Parliament? Read the rest of this entry »

The National Security Council should minimise the adverse economic impact of lockdowns and should adopt a more flexible approach to lift early the four-week conditional movement control order (CMCO) imposed on almost all states until Dec. 6 in states where there is no red zone or report few Covid-19 cases.
There are today at least three states , i.e. Johor, Malacca and Kedah which have no red zone or district with more than 40 Covid-19 cases, although they had a red zone district each when the CMCO was announced. The NSC should consider lifting the CMCO in these three states.
