On November 18, 2020, I warned that if Malaysia continued to surge with four-digit daily increases (and it was in the less than 2,000 category), by the end of the year in 2020, Malaysia will overtake China as a country with more Covid-19 infections!
At that time, China was placed No. 64th country with 86,361 Covid-19 cases and Malaysia was placed No. 85 with 49,730 Covid-19 cases. Read the rest of this entry »

In his live New Year message, the Prime Minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin listed five priorities for the year 2021 in an integrated national recovery strategy post Covid-19.
The Fourth Priority is to “Uphold the country’s sovereignty and strengthen Malaysia’s position on the world stage”.
If we are serious about this priority, then Parliament must be convened in a Special Session on the Covid-19 pandemic to work out a strategy to get Malaysia out of the slippery slope to a failed state in a post-Covid world. Read the rest of this entry »

Malaysia must go on a war footing in the war against the Covid-19 pandemic, not against any Malaysian or group but against the coronavirus as the country is heading towards a Covid catastrophe for three reasons:

In everyone’s perception, the United States of America, with 25 million Covid-19 cases and over 415,000 fatalities, is not only the top country in the world with the most cumulative total of Covid-19 cases, but the country which is the worst performer on the world stage in war against the Covid-19 pandemic.

Why has Malaysia become the worst performer in Asia in the last two months in the Covid-19 Pandemic — even worse than India, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Philippines, Japan, China and South Korea?
On November 18, 2020, we were ranked No. 85 among countries in the world with the most cumulative total of Covid-19 cases, having 49,730 Covid-19 cases, but yesterday, we have jumped 25 places to be ranked No. 60 with 165,371 Covid-19 cases and 619 fatalities.

Tomorrow is the US Inauguration Day – the first day of Joe Biden as the 46th US President and the final day of Donald Trump as the 45th US President with a disastrous legacy of 410,000 deaths, 25 million Covid-19 cases and 30,000 falsehoods and lies.
More Americans have died in the last year of Trump’s four-year presidency than the eight years of the Vietnam war where some 58,000 Americans perished, or even the four years when the United States joined the Second World War where some 400,000 Americans perished. Read the rest of this entry »

On 1st December, 2020, I asked: “Will Malaysia overtake China with more cumulative total of Covid-19 cases before or after the end of the present Parliament meeting?”
Unfortunately, Malaysia overtook China before the end of the Parliament meeting on December 16, 2020, with Malaysia positioned as No. 79 with 87,913 cases while China was ranked No. 80 with 86,770 cases (worldometers.info), when China with 1.4 billion population has 40 times the population of Malaysia.
On December 1, Malaysia was ranked No. 83 in the world with 65,697 Covid-19 cases but we have deteriorated by leaps and bounds and today, we are ranked No. 61 with 158,434 Covid-19 cases and 601 fatalities. Read the rest of this entry »

Yesterday, I said that the five priorities which the Prime Minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin listed in his New Year Message as the basis for an integrated national recovery strategy post-Covid do not stand up to public scrutiny by the first fortnight of the new year.
I referred to Priority Three “to ensure political stability with strong emphasis on good governance as a foundation for sustainable economic recovery” and Priority Four “to uphold the country’s sovereignty and strengthen Malaysia’s position on the world stage”.

End the “cloak-and-dagger” politics and let all political parties meet and reach a new national consensus that the country’s biggest threat is the Covid-19 pandemic and that there would be no 15th General Election until the threat is overcome.
The proclamation of an emergency yesterday is the product of such “cloak-and-dagger” politics for it came as a total surprise to the nation apart from the Cabinet Ministers, especially after the Monday address by the Prime Minister, Tan Sri Muhyddin Yassin on the re-imposition of movement control order (MCO) on eight states and territories and conditional MCO on six other states, and the continuation of the recovery MCO on the two remaining states. The refusal of the Muhyiddin Cabinet to summon a Special Parliament to address Malaysia’s losing control of the third wave of Covid-19 pandemic is the height of irresponsibility of a kakistocracy.
It is accompanied by the failure of the government for the last ten months to launch an “all-of-government” and “whole-of-society” strategy and approach to save lives and livelihoods in the pandemic.and to plan for a quick and sustainable post-pandemic economic and national recovery for the country. Yesterday Malaysia reported another 1,741 new Covid-19 cases, bringing the cumulative total to 120,818 cases. The death toll from the pandemic has also crossed the 500 mark to 501.
The Heath Director-General Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah said that the Health Ministry is mulling to allow Covid-19 patients who are asymptomatic to be quarantined at home as its bed capacity at government facilities is reaching the limit of 23,000.
Currently, there are 22,089 active Covid-19 cases, with the country witnessing a high number of cases daily.

The Prime Minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has survived the confidence test with the passage of the 2021 Budget, a most ordinary budget in extraordinary times created by the “one-in-a-century” Covid-19 pandemic, but he has not demonstrated that he was won the confidence of Members of Parliament, Malaysians and the world as illustrated by the Fitch Ratings downgrade on Malaysia’s sovereign credit rating, Malaysia’s overtaking of China today in total cumulative Covid-19 cases and the joint press conference by Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad and Tengku Razaleigh on Monday evening.

If the trajectory of the daily increase of new Covid-19 cases in Malaysia is maintained, Malaysia will overtake China with more cumulative total of Covid-19 cases when Dewan Rakyat adjourns on Thursday – if not sooner in two days’ time by Wednesday.

On December 1, I asked whether Malaysia will overtake China with more cumulative total of Covid-19 cases before or after the end of the present Parliament meeting – Dewan Rakyat on Dec. 17 and Dewan Negara on Dec. 29, 2020.
Yesterday, Malaysia had a daily increase of 1,937 new Covid-19 cases, bringing the cumulative total to 82,246 cases.

Parliament’s greatest failure will be its inability to set up two Select Committees – one on the Covid-19 Pandemic and the other on Corruption and Integrity

Dewan Rakyat has a last week left for the November/December 2020 meeting before its adjournment — i.e. next Monday to Thursday, Dec. 14–17, 2020.
I regard the greatest failure of the November/December meeting of Parliament is its failure to set up two Select Committees — one on the Covid-19 pandemic and the other on Corruption and Integrity.
In fact, Parliament would be gravely negligence and irresponsible in not setting these two Select Committees, reflecting the Muhyiddin Cabinet as its kakistocratic worst. Read the rest of this entry »

The call by the Pakatan Harapan (PH) presidential council for a confidence motion on the Prime Minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, following the Fitch Ratings downgrade on Malaysia’s sovereign credit rating should be supported by all Members of Parliament, including from the Perikatan Nasional government MPs.
The Fitch Ratings downgrade cannot be simply ignored by the government and Parliament as the credibility and legitimacy of Muhyiddin as the eighth Prime Minister and his jumbo-sized Cabinet are at stake and they can only be secured whether by a confidence or no-confidence motion, so that the appellation of the Muhyiddin government as a “backdoor” government can be put to rest.

Fitch’s downgrade of Malaysia’s long-term foreign-currency issuer default rating (IDR) from A- to BBB+ is an indictment of the 2021 Budget presented by the Finance Minister, Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz to Parliament early November.
