Today is a double anniversary for 8th March – International Women’s Day as well as the tenth anniversary of the urban political tsunami of the 12th General Election exactly 10 years ago.
Let the 308 double anniversary foreshadow the first change of Federal Government in Malaysia in the 14th General Election expected to be held in less than 70 days before mid-May, where Malaysia starts the journey on the world stage to become a normal democracy where voters can peacefully and democratically elect the Federal Government of their choice through the ballot box in a general election without any man-made chaos or catastrophe.
Let us enlarge the urban political tsunami ten years ago into a national political tsunami, encompassing rural political tsunami, where all Malaysians regardless of race, religion or region unite as Malaysians to re-set Malaysian nation-building direction and policies where all Malaysians can feel proud as Malaysians because the country becomes a show-case unity, harmony, justice, development and prosperity of a plural society to a troubled world instead of hurtling along the present trajectory towards a failed, rogue and kleptocratic state after six decades of nationhood. The speech by the Yang di Pertuan Agong in opening the sixth meeting of the 13th Parliament yesterday is supposed to be the Najib administration’s latest policy speech on its policy measures and specifics in the pipeline in the next 12 months.
But the second Najib administration has less than five months to go, and in fact, the 14th General Elections is expected in 70 days before mid-May, before the Pakatan Harapan’s eighth Malaysian Prime Minister-designate, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, is released from Sungai Buloh prison in early June – showing how frightened Najib is of Anwar!
The question teasing the media and all MPs is whether the present month-long parliamentary meeting starting yesterday on March 5 would be allowed to complete its month-long meeting ending on April 5 or whether it would be dissolved mid-way after the Elections Commission had rushed its report and proposals on the redelineation of parliamentary constituencies to the Prime Minister for adoption by Parliament.
This “hide-and-seek” game as to when Parliament would be dissolved, and whether the present month-long parliamentary meeting would be truncated half-way and Parliament dissolved for the holding of 14GE, is unworthy of a Prime Minister who is confident of support from the people and understand the true meaning of parliamentary democracy. For the first time in my decades in Parliament since 1969 (with a break in the Tenth Parliament from 1999 to 2004), I would be missing the official opening of Parliament by the Yang di Pertuan Agong because of my fall in my Gelang Patah house and the blue-black swelling around my right eye have not fully cleared.
This is the official opening of sixth meeting of the 13th Parliament, which is expected to be dissolved soon after for the 14th General Election to bd held within 70 days before mid-May.
There is no better way for MPs, whether Pakatan Harapan or Barisan Nasional, to prepare for the debate on the Motion of Thanks to the Yang di Pertuan Agong for the Royal Address at the official opening of Parliament than to read the memoir of tycoon, Robert Kuok, who was recently demonized and subject to a four-day gratuitous, baseless, malicious and savage UMNO attack over the false accusation that Robert Kuok had funded the DAP against the Barisan Nasional. The gratuitous, baseless, malicious and savage attacks on tycoon Robert Kuok in the past four days was one of the PR disasters for Malaysia – and there were a long battery of PR disasters in the past week – which plunged Malaysia’s international reputation to the lowest stocks in the 61-year history of the nation.
Another PR disaster for Malaysia was the claim by the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Razak that his quinoa diet was cheaper than Tun Mahathir Mohamad’s horse feed.
His revelation last Thursday that he does not eat rice but eat quinoa made world headlines, reported worldwide, not only Singapore, Indonesia and Hong Kong, but also United States, United Kingdom and Australia. Read the rest of this entry »

Ten years go in 2018, Parliament was dissolved a week before my birthday and I made a birthday wish that DAP would capture the Penang State Government in the 12th General Election on March 8, 2008.
I never made public my 2008 birthday wish before polling day but it was a birthday wish fulfilled as on March 8, 2008, DAP shocked the nation and replaced Gerakan in Penang and formed the Penang State Government.

Last Wednesday’s conviction and 30-month jail sentence passed on PKR Vice President and MP for Pandan, Rafizi Ramli and former Public Bank clerk Johari Mohamad have brought back to the national limelight one of the host of financial scandals in Malaysia which the authorities had hoped had been successfully been swept under the carpet – the RM250 million National Feedlot Corporation (NFC) cow-and-condo scandal.
As a result, the RM250 million NFC cow-and-condo scandal, together with Rafizi’s conviction and jail sentence, will take their rightful place together with other financial scandals, like the world-trotting 1MDB financial scandal, the MARA, FELDA, Tabung Haji and other financial scandals, in the forefront of issues in the forthcoming 14th General Election to be held within the next 90 days. It is most regrettable that a Pakatan Harapan programme in Kampong Bakar Batu in the Johor Baru parliamentary constituency last night for the DAP State Assemblyman for Stulang, Andrew Chen Kah Eng, the Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) Johor Secretary and former three-term Assemblyman for Kempas, Datuk Osman Sapian, and the PKR Johor Information Chief, Akmal Nasir, AMANAH Johore Baru deputy chairman Muadz Jamaluddin and myself to meet and dialogue with the people in the area had been disrupted and cancelled.
If this had happened 50 and 60 years ago, it would not have been surprising.

As Penang DAP State Chairman and Penang Executive Councillor Chow Kon Yeow observed just now, this gathering is quite unique and historic as we have here three persons closely connected with the political development of Tanjong constituency, two former MPs and the current MP for Tanjong Parliamentary constituency, as I had been Tanjong MP for three terms from 1986 – 1999, Chow Kon Yeow MP for Tanjong for three terms from 1999 to 2013 and Ng Wei Aik, Tanjong MP since 2013.

The 14th General Election to be held in 100 days is the one opportunity and possibility in 60 years to Save Malaysia from being a failed, rogue and kleptocratic state and for the country to a be a great and united plural nation.
For over half a century and through eleven General Elections, Malaysian electoral politics were cast in stone as to who was the governing coalition of the country, and the question to be decided was how many seats Opposition parties can win in the very undemocratic and one-sided electoral process.
I still remember the very uphill struggle in the early decades when DAP parliamentary representation, often the largest Opposition grouping in Parliament, only managed to secure from a lowly nine to 24 and back to 9, 10 and 11 parliamentary seats from 1969 to 2004 General Elections. Firstly, I wish to thank all Malaysians, especially Pakatan Harapan and DAP leaders, members and supporters, as well as those from other political parties and organizations, for their support, concern and good wishes during my cancer operation and month-long break and recuperation.
I found however that I could not escape the demonization campaign against me, even during the five-week break.
I was in fact hospitalized on the day the MCA newspaper launched a major demonization against me, with the screaming headline: “Kit Siang as PM will create racial rift, says Liow” on December 18, 2017, quoting the MCA President and Transport Minister, Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai warning that “Racial ties among the people will be damaged if DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang becomes prime minister” and that “Lim’s ambition would steer Malaysia towards the path of ruin”.
This is the stuff of fake news and false information, the staple diet of demonization by UMNO/BN propagandists and cytrops (cybertroopers), adopted wholesale by the MCA President as I had never thought of becoming Prime Minister of Malaysia. Read the rest of this entry »

We have gone through tough team training day and night for 6 months for the other ranks, and 12 months training for the officers. We eat, sleep, train, sweat, cry and laugh together. After recruit or cadet training, we were enlisted and commissioned into our various corps and services. Except for the Royal Malay Regiment, in all corps and services we were not concerned if our fellow comrades was a Malay, Chinese, Indian, Punjabi, IBAN or Kadazan. Whatever race and religion, our loyalty only went to our Commander, to our Corps/services, to the MAF, to our King and country. That was how we were taught and trained.
During both emergencies (1948-1960/1960-1989), during the confrontation with Indonesia, and the war in Sarawak, till the early 90s … we fought like brothers, to defend and maintain the independence of this country. Never before in six decades of the nation’s history have Malaysians, regardless of race, religion, region or station, been so concerned about the future of the country as we had clearly taken the wrong turn in nation-building at variance from the bedrock principles of the Malaysian Constitution and Rukunegara.
This is best illustrated by the following developments:
• The failure of the federal government to fully honour the Malaysia Agreement 1963 for Sabah and Sarawak, with the Keningau Batu Sumpah standing as an indictment of such failure, particularly the three core issues of religion, land and local customs.
• In the Cobbold Commission Report 1963, the Malayan representatives made the commitment that the Malaysian Constitution “in effect would be secular”, and it is most shocking that such constitutional safeguards had been so undermined in recent years, that the Federal Government is openly funding activities of organisations which attacked the “secular” principle in the Malaysian Constitution and the Rukunegara principle on the supremacy of the Malaysian Constitution. Land which embraces territorial waters raise the question of Sabah and Sarawak’s rightful share of oil royalties, while Malaysia’s unique asset of linguistic, religious and cultural diversity has come under intense attack in recent years.
• Even the Malay Rulers are concerned that the Malaysian nation-building process has gone awry, resulting in three statements by them in the past two years, the first one in October 2015 expressing concern on the 1MDB scandal, the second statement in February 2016 on the National Security Council (NSC) Bill with its impact on democracy and human rights and recently, the third statement in October this year expressing the Malay Rulers’ concern on national unity and harmony. Will those who conspired long and hard in the past five years to snuff out the DAP from the Malaysian political landscape succeed tomorrow when the DAP holds a special congress to re-elect the 2012 DAP national leadership based on the 2012 DAP delegates’ list – as directed by the Registrar of Societies?
Time will tell but the DAP is not going to allow itself to be snuffed out of the struggle in Malaysia for democracy, justice, freedom, development, good governance and national unity.
I said yesterday that the Penang flood-and-storm disaster is an object lesson for all Malaysians, as in natural disasters like the great Kelantan flood disaster at the end 2014, all Malaysians throughout the country, regardless of race, religion, region or politics, demonstrate that they are Malaysians first and last, and came forward to render assistance to their fellow-Malaysians in distress and need.
The question is why we need to wait for a natural disaster to happen for these feelings of solidarity, compassion, goodwill and unity to surface – transcending race, religion, region or politics? Read the rest of this entry »

It is a special privilege to welcome Datuk Yeop Adlan Che Rose as a DAP member, as it is a home-coming, as his father Che Rose bin Haji Abdullah was the DAP candidate in the first by-election after the 1974 General Election in the Alor Pongsu constituency in Perak state assembly on 18th December 1974.
The Alor Pongsu by-election 43 years ago is testimony that right from the beginning of DAP’s formation 52 years ago, DAP had never regarded itself as a Chinese or non-Malay party, never an anti-Malay and anti-Islam party, but a party for all races and religions in the country.
DAP contested the rural Alor Pongsu by-election not because we expected to win, but part of a long-term reach-out by the party to all Malaysians and regions with the DAP message for national unity, justice, freedom, development and good governance for all.
When I visited Bagan Serai (the centre of the Alor Pongsu constituency) in December 2015, I was pleasantly surprised by an old photograph taken when I visited Bagan Serai at the end of 1970, which was shortly after I was released from the first Internal Security Act (ISA) detention. I was struck by a foreign news report that the Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman had pledged a return to a moderate past and looked forward to a technology-driven future.
Speaking at the Future Investment Initiative (FII) conference in Riyadh, the Saudi Crown Prince said:
“We are returning to what we were before — a country of moderate Islam that is open to all religions and to the world.
“We will not spend the next 30 years of our lives dealing with destructive ideas. We will destroy them today.”
The crown prince addressed an audience of thousands of global investors and dignitaries who visited the Saudi capital to hear first-hand how the country’s society and economy are being transformed.
He said: “Saudi Arabia was not like this before 1979. We want to go back to what we were, the moderate Islam that’s open to all religions. We want to live a normal life.”
Although the Saudi kingdom still has a long way to go in order to represent moderate Islam and become an open society, this is in stark contrast to some Malaysians who want to take the country towards an extremist direction, completely at odds with the country’s bedrock constitutional and nation-building principles of openness, tolerance, moderation and inclusivity. Tomorrow, Malaysians celebrate Deepavali.
For six decades, we have failed to leverage as inheritors of the greatest civilizations in the world to build on their strengths and achievements instead of being blinded by their faults and vices.
We inherit the greatest accomplishments of mankind represented in the great civilizations in human history which meet in confluence in Malaysia, and we should be a shining example to the world of unity in diversity.
Let us benefit from the unique character and strength of Malaysia as a plural nation of diverse races, religions, cultures and languages and not be wracked by worsening racial and religious polarization in the country.
It is no use issuing Deepavali messages every year about the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil when we continue to practice and preach the politics of distrust and hatred based on a most irresponsible exploitation of the politics of race and religion.

I wish to congratulate Fa Abdul for very well brought-up children who could critically think what is best for themselves and the country, in response to Zaid Ibrahim’s advice to young Muslims in Malaysia to hijrah to UK in order to live a better life as Malaysia has become “a sick Muslim country”.
I was taken aback when I read Zaid’s views two days ago, and although I did not agree with him and his views would be twisted and exploited to create “political problems” for the DAP, this was price we have to pay if we believe in freedom of speech and expression – even those which conflict with the party’s viewpoint.
I was quite moved by Fa Abdul’s piece, especially the exchange between the siblings about never giving up, although changing the government is not easy and changing people’s mindset is even more difficult.
I do not know whether Zaid made his advice to young Muslims to hijrah “tongue-in-cheek”, but Fa Abdul’s writing on the exchange with his children gives hope that whatever the adversities and however difficult or impossible the challenges to effect change, change will come inexorably and unrelentingly.

Most Malaysians are feeling economically worse off today than they were 10 years ago, youth unemployment spiked by 13% last year, Malaysia is less respected around the world, inflation is making it harder for Malaysians to buy the things they need, and a recent Pew survey found that 73% of Malaysians expected the country’s economic situation to worsen or stay the same over the following 12 months.
