On the 118th birthday anniversary of Bapa Malaysia, Tunku Abdul Rahman, three quotes from him came to mind.
They are:
“We are all Malaysians. This is the bond that unites us. Let us always remember that unity is our fundamental strength as a people and as a nation.”
“We must each always think first of Malaysia, of the national need and least of ourselves …Everyone must try to help and see that the people are one-minded, with loyalty and one aim, to make Malaysia – the land we love – a happy abode for all of us. If we all do this then we can guarantee liberty, security, prosperity and happiness for the future.”
“All talk on Islamic States is just an empty dream. No man in his right sense would accept a nation which bases its political administration on religion, and in a country like Malaysia with its multi-racial and multi-religious people, there is no room for an Islamic State.”

It is shocking that after a year of worsening Covid-19 pandemic, the re-imposition of movement control order and the declaration of an emergency, a false sense of priority seems to pervade the top echelon of the Muhyiddin government.
Otherwise, why the visit of the Prime Minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to Indonesia where one of the results was to “step up talks to work out the standard operating procedure (SOP) for the implementation of the Reciprocal Green Lane (RGL) scheme between the two countries”, as announced by Muhyiddin after he met Indonesian President Jojo Widodo at Istana Merdeka, Jakarta last Friday?

I had expected Malaysia to be ranked among the top 50 countries with the most cumulative total of Covid-19 cases before the Chinese New Year, but we have achieved this dubious feat a week earlier.

I had expected Malaysia to be ranked among the top 50 countries with the most cumulative total of Covid-19 cases before the Chinese New Year, but we have achieved this dubious feat a week earlier.
If Malaysia continues in its trajectory of daily increase of more than 4,000 Covid-19 cases, we will be ranked No. 49 today, beating Croatia which has 234,153 cumulative total of cases as compared to Malaysia’s 231,483 Covid-19 cases.

The Chinese New Year SOP is the best proof of the government’s failure to have a “all-of-government” and “whole-of-society” strategy and approach in the war against Covid-19 pandemic.
Malaysians who want to give full support to the national strategy to bring the third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic under control will also be infuriated and antagonised by the Chinese New Year SOP, as it is a SOP which would not be drawn up by any group which realises that it is essential to regain public confidence, trust and support if Malaysia is not to totally lose control in the war against the Covid-19 pandemic. Mahathir’s egregious blunder resigning as PM

I am surprised that I was mentioned in the last paragraph of Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad’s statement yesterday, where he said:
“I thought that something similar was needed. But I failed because Kit Siang said I was trying to become a dictator. He supported Anwar as the PH candidate. Had the 92 votes gone to me I would have 154 votes. You can imagine what direction the nation would take when all parties put the nation first.”
This is Mahathir’s own conjecture. To put the record straight, PH’s decision to support Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as Prime Minister after Mahathir’s shocking resignation, was made unanimously by all three component parties of PH – DAP, PKR and Amanah. Malaysians are set to face a grim Chinese New Year

Malaysians are set to face a grim Chinese New Year with the extension of the second movement control order (MCO 2.0) to February 18, 2021.
If the Health Ministry’s National Institute of Health (NIH)’s revised pandemic projections are right, Malaysia will record 8,000 daily new Covid-19 cases by the first week of March and 10,000 daily new cases by the second week of March because of high infectivity rate. Read the rest of this entry »
Will the National Security Council pave the way for a change of strategy to enable an “all-of-government” and “whole-of –society” strategy which does not depend on increasing penalties but effective communication campaign to restore public confidence and trust to make every Malaysian war-minded to bring the Covid-19 pandemic under control?

Yesterday, it was reported that there were 4,214 new Covid-19 cases and 10 deaths in Malaysia, bringing the cumulative total to 219,173 cases and 770 fatalities.
Malaysia has moved one rank further from No. 53 the previous day to No. 52 among countries in the world with the most cumulative total of Covid-19 cases, although Malaysians do not know whether yesterday’s increase of new Covid-19 cases had been inflated by backlog cases.

On November 18, 2020, I warned that if Malaysia continued to surge with four-digit daily increases (and it was in the less than 2,000 category), by the end of the year in 2020, Malaysia will overtake China as a country with more Covid-19 infections!

In his live New Year message, the Prime Minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin listed five priorities for the year 2021 in an integrated national recovery strategy post Covid-19.
The Fourth Priority is to “Uphold the country’s sovereignty and strengthen Malaysia’s position on the world stage”.
If we are serious about this priority, then Parliament must be convened in a Special Session on the Covid-19 pandemic to work out a strategy to get Malaysia out of the slippery slope to a failed state in a post-Covid world. Read the rest of this entry »
Reflection a year since Covid-19 – will it End?

In addressing COVID issues today, apart from looking ahead, we need to look at our rear-view mirror. Malaysians forget easily and need to be reminded repeatedly that we are where we are today due to our government folly. COVID outbreak first started due to a concentration lapse involving the government agencies in managing COVID as the politician battle for power in Feb 2020 (Sheraton Move).
Despite the painful experience of 4 months of MCO that crippled the economy, and we returned to some degree of normalization, the peninsular politicians assaulted the Sabah government to grab power and, in the process brought the disease back to the peninsular states. KKM refusal to enforce quarantine for travelers between the two areas before and after the election is the primary reason why KKM resources are strained today and our economy crippling, and people are burdened again. The furore over the presence of top civil servants during a virtual meeting of party leaders from the Perikatan National government questioned by the DAP MP for Segambut Hannah Yeoh and PKR MP for Tanjong Maluim Chang Lih Kang has highlighted the sad fact that a year after the outbreak, we are still a long way to an “all-of-government” and “whole-of-society” strategy and approach in the war against the Covid-19 pandemic.
When will the Chief Secretary Mohd Zuki Ali and the Health Director-General or his deputy brief the Opposition leaders, Anwar Ibrahim, Lim Guan Eng, Mohamad Sabu, Shafie Apdal and Mahathir Mohamad on the Covid-19 pandemic and the emergency proclamation, or is the Covid-19 pandemic the sole concern of the Perikatan Nasional government and none of the business of the Opposition parties and the people? The daily increase of 4,275 Covid-19 cases yesterday bringing Malaysia’s cumulative total to 180,455 Covid-19 cases and 667 fatalities shows that Malaysia’s serious upsurge is still ferocious and not under control.
If the trajectory of 4,000 daily increase continues, then Malaysia will break the 200,000-mark by the end of January 2021 and we will likely be ranked among the top 50 countries in the world with the most cumulative total of Covid-19 cases. Read the rest of this entry »

Malaysia must go on a war footing in the war against the Covid-19 pandemic, not against any Malaysian or group but against the coronavirus as the country is heading towards a Covid catastrophe for three reasons:

I welcome the announcement of the Health Director-General Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah that the Health Ministry aims to begin integrating public and private hospitals to treat serious cases of Covid-19 by next week, as it is the first step towards an “all-of-government” and “whole-of-society” strategy and approach in the war against the Covid-19 pandemic which we should have adopted some ten months ago.
Now that we have started on this process to ensure that we can emerge on top in the war against the Covid-19 epidemic, Malaysia must widen the scope and magnitude of this process to include key players in the private sector – the political parties, the NGOs and the civil society, the SMEs, the corporate sector and even the investors – as well as the immediate convening of a Special Parliament on the Covid-19 pandemic to provide a platform for such a strategy and approach. In everyone’s perception, the United States of America, with 25 million Covid-19 cases and over 415,000 fatalities, is not only the top country in the world with the most cumulative total of Covid-19 cases, but the country which is the worst performer on the world stage in war against the Covid-19 pandemic.
