Malaysia must preserve and promote her diversity and colours as a multi-racial, multi-lingual, multi-cultural and multi-religious nation as the alternative is a failed state which will not benefit anyone in Malaysia

Tonight’s lighting up of Kangkar Pulai for the Chinese New Year highlights the vitalities of Malaysia, and we must preserve and promote Malaysia’s diversity and colours as a multi-racial, multi-lingual, multi-cultural and multi-religious nation as the alternative is a failed state which will not benefit anyone in Malaysia.

Malaysia has recently become a very polarised nation because the extremists in our society have been allowed to exploit race and religion to poison the Malaysian national life, so much so that what had been accepted as part of Malaysian life has been distorted and painted as a grave threat to different communities and religious faiths.

In fact, we have reached a stage where there are Malaysians who pride themselves as racists, something which is completely unacceptable in the past five decades.

We seem to be retrogressing in nation-building. Why are we going backwards?

There are several reasons, but one important reason is that for the past decade, Malaysians seem to have forgotten the basic national documents which formed the basis of Malaysian nation-building, be it the Federal Constitution or the Rukunegara.

What is the use of an individual winning if the nation loses as a result?

When I visited Salem, India in August last year, I said that Malaysia seemed to be trapped in an extraordinary situation which, if not addressed, will only lead to greater division and disunity, stagnation and failure to leverage on the best values and qualities of the Islamic, Chinese, Indian and Western civilisations which meet in confluence in Malaysia to build a great Malaysian nation.

This extraordinary situation was one where every community was made to believe that its ethnicity, rights, culture and future were facing an existential threat – where the Malays felt threatened, the Chinese felt threatened, the Indians felt threatened, the Kadazans felt threatened and the Ibans felt threatened.

Not only the various races felt threatened, Islam felt threatened and the non-Islamic religions felt threatened.

But who was creating all these threats to all ethnic groups in the country? Read the rest of this entry »

Let us learn from the lessons of the past 19 months

Former top civil servant Tan Sri Alwi Jantan’s following 2020 New Year’s Day poem yesterday “Change” is food for thought for all Malaysians, regardless of race or religion, who care and love Malaysia and only want the best for Malaysia and our children and children’s children:

CHANGE

We voted for a change
From kleptocracy to Malaysia Baru.
You won’t believe it but it’s strange
What we get are all true.

Black shoes and khat for schools,
Zakir Naik the hate guru.
As if we haven’t been taken for fools,
Flying car and crooked bridge too.

Academics become cheer leaders
In search of lost dignity.
Not fit to become teachers
At any university.

O Lord, my wish for the New Year,
Show us the way to salvation.
Let us together strive and bear
The burden of rebuilding this nation.

I agree with Alwi that a lecturer who could set an university examination paper on ethnic relations extolling the preacher Zakir Naik as an icon in the Muslim world is not promoting but undermining ethnic relations in Malaysia and is ‘Not fit to become teachers at any university”. Renew resolve, hope and confidence to build a New Malaysia in the new year

I am reminded of Charles Dickens’ famous quote in his book A Tale of Two Cities:

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of light, it was the season of darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair.”

Many Malaysians feel the “winter of despair” but we must persevere to work for the “spring of hope” – to renew resolve, hope and confidence to build a New Malaysia in the new year despite setbacks and vicissitudes.

It is a sign of the failure of the “spring of hope” in Malaysia that 19 months of Pakatan Harapan government – the first time that Malaysia gave the world hope that a peaceful and democratic transition of power can bring about reform and change at a time when democracy was in retreat in the world for over a decade, – seems to have been dissolved in such an ignominous fashion in very discordant and divisive dispute over the Jawi issue.

Since the historic decision of May 9 last year in the last general election, lies, fake news and hate speech by irresponsible and extremist elements resorting to the politics of race and religion aided by the Internet and the social media have conspired to create a false situation where every ethnic group and religion feels that it is facing an existential threat.

As a result, the Vision 2020 of a fully developed Malaysia which is a “united nation, with a confident Malaysian society, infused by strong moral and ethical values, living in a society that is democratic, liberal and tolerant, caring, economically just and equitable, progressive and prosperous, and in full possession of an economy that is competitive, dynamic, robust and resilient” is not within reach on the horizon. While Vision 2020 will not be achieved next year, let more and more Malaysians try to be Bangsa Malaysians and resolve the crisis over Jawi issue in a peaceful and consensual Malaysian way

The police are looking for a man who recorded and made viral a video clip claiming that there was a communist flag in the 2019 Penang Chingay Festival procession in Jalan Raja Uda in Butterworth, Penang, on Sunday. Some 50 policemen and officers were on duty during the parade, and it was impossible they could not detect a communist flag.

Yesterday, the Gamis President Saifullah Baiduri threatened that the bloody riots of May 13, 1969 may return as long as Dong Zong still exist, and there was later the completely unacceptable explanation that Gamis had used the provocative headline against Dong Zong to attract public attention to its statement.

There was also the speech by a religious preacher at a Muafakat Nasional ceramah alleging that the Pakatan Harapan government has become a communist government and that communists have entered the Malaysian Cabinet and Government which had gone viral, while earlier that there had been Whatapps messages spreading the lies that I was a communist and even related to former Malayan Communist Party leader Chin Peng.

These are some examples of the mountain of lies, fake news and hate speech which are easily and increasingly viralled on the social media which, if unchecked, will allow bigots and extremist to turn Malaysia into a deeply polarised nation, ultimately endangering not only democracy but the nation itself.

In a week’s time, the new year 2020 will begin. While Vision 2020 will not be achieved next year, let more and more Malaysians regardless of race, religion or region, try to be Banga Malaysians and resolve the crisis over the Jawi issue in a peaceful and consensual Malaysian manner.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Let Malaysians reaffirm the constitutional principle of Islam as official religion and freedom of worship for other religions and not succumb to the lies, false new and hate speech on social media that the various races and religions are facing an existential threat

Merry Christmas to all Christians in Malaysia.

The last 12 months have been testing times for Malaysia to achieve our goal to be a top world-class nation of unity, justice, freedom, excellence and integrity where Malaysians can celebrate the diversity of races, languages, religions and cultures in peace, tolerance, acceptance and co-existence.

Yesterday, I saw on the social media a denunciation of Malaysia of having become a communist state. There was also in the social media a denunciation of myself of having becoming a “hanjian” ( 漢奸 – a pejorative term for a race traitor and Han ethnicity).

Both are equally lies. Read the rest of this entry »

The target of the lies, fake news and hate speech on the social media since yesterday is the DAP which was bombed with lies, fake news and hate speech that it is the ”komunis moden in Malaysia” and that there will be no peace in Malaysia unless there is no “communist” in Cabinet

There had been various waves of attacks of lies, fake news and hate speech on the social media on leaders and parties in the Pakatan Harapan Government, whether focussing on the Prime Minister, Dr. Mahathir Mohamad and Bersatu, or PKR President Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and PKR or Mohamad Sabu and Amanah.

Since yesterday, the target of the lies, fake news and hate speech on the social is the DAP which was bombed with lies, fake news and hate speech since yesterday that is the ”komunis moden in Malaysia” and that there will be no peace in Malaysia unless there is no “communist” in the Cabinet.

If the social media attack is to be believed, Malaysia has a Special Branch which is one of the most incompetent in the world, which will be most unfair to the Special Branch, as the DAP had never been accused of being communist or communist-sympathiser for the past 53 years.

Furthermore, we are today in an age where communism has lost its power and influence as representing the irresistible wave of the future.

In this connection, the statement by an adviser to the police deradicalisation programme, Ahmad El Muhammady warning that the nation could witness a repeat of the May 13, 1969 race riots bear serious consideration.

Call on UM Vice Chancellor to withdraw the university’s police report and to stop targeting student activists for their protests but to address them

The University of Malaya Vice Chancellor Datuk Abdul Rahim Hashim should withdraw the University’s police report and stop targeting student activists for their protests but to address them.

The Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad has upheld the right of students to demonstrate, but disagree that a convocation ceremony was the right time and place to carry out the action. He further declared that the government had no intention of interfering in the matter.

It is in this spirit that the protest at the university’s graduation ceremony and other related matters should be addressed – not in a high-handed and vengeful light which would put the University of Malaya in more adverse light. Read the rest of this entry »

Can the Malay Dignity Congress lead the way for a Malaysian campaign to achieve a Golden Age for Malaysia as a top world-class nation of unity, justice, freedom, excellence and integrity

Rindu darah!”.

Semua rakyat Malaysia, tanpa mengira kaum atau agama, sepatutnya berasa bimbang dengan peningkatan berita palsu dan ucapan kebencian sehingga terdapat satu artikel diterbitkan yang bertajuk: “Remembering Nik Aziz as nation drowns in polemics of race and religion”

Will the four public universities which is organising the Malay Dignity Congress on Sunday organise a Chinese Malaysian Dignity Congress, Indian Malaysian Dignity Congress, Kadazan Dignity Congress, Dayak Dignity Congress, Orang Asli Dignity Congress and most important of all, a Malaysian Dignity Congress?

Another must-see film for Malaysians – “The Kleptocrats’: sombre reminder that May 9, 2018 saved Malaysia from becoming Venezuela of South-east Asia

Two films every Malaysian should see are “M for Malaysia” and “The Kleptocrats -Billion Dollar Whale” to learn or to be reminded of the existential threat Malaysia faced during the 14th General Election.

If there had been no historic and miraculous change of government on May 9, 2018, Malaysia would have continued in the trajectory pursued for close to a decade to become a failed, rogue and kleptocratic state, and no power on earth could have saved future generations of Malaysians, regardless of race or religion, from the status of serfs in having to repay the tens and hundreds of billions of debt conceived and implemented by “maestros” of unimaginable scams and money-laundering schemes to exploit the loopholes of the international banking and financial system.

If there had been no change of government, the re-elected Prime Minister would have made Malaysia the Venezuela of South-east Asia and the Sick Man of Asia.

Venezuela is in the thick of a terrible political, socio-economic and humanitarian crisis. Once one of the 20 richest countries in the world and the richest in Latin America with free education and free medical services for her citizens, it is now poor, backward, broken and bankrupt state, with over 10 per cent of Venezuelans (3.4 million) having left the country in despair.

The humanitarian crisis in Venezuela has affected the life of the average Venezuelan on all levels. By 2017, hunger had escalated to the point where almost seventy-five percent of the population had lost an average of over 8 kg (over 19 lbs) in weight, and more than half did not have enough income to meet their basic food needs. Malaysians must not allow the only chance for the country to become a top world-class nation of unity, justice, freedom, excellence and integrity to be sabotaged by unscrupulous and unprincipled politicians wanting to regain political power by using fake news and hate speech to incite inter-racial and inter-religious polarisation

It is more than 500 days since the historic and miraculous decision of Malaysians in the 14th General Election on May 9, 2018 – what the international media had described as a “shock victory – to achieve the “impossible dream” of achieving a change of government through peaceful and democratic means first time in six decades.

All Malaysians who had rooted for what appeared to be an “impossible dream” of a change of government had high hopes of the Pakatan Harapan government in Putrajaya, and so did the leaders of the four parties of DAP, PKR, Bersatu and Amanah which made up the Pakatan Harapan coalition, but they were totally unaware of the magnitude of the rot which the Najib premiership had left behind.

The country was in debt for over a trillion ringgit; the national institutions have lost their independence and professionalism as they were suborned and subverted by the former prime minister and the 1MDB billions of ringgit; the country had forfeited the respect by the international community of nations as it became a global kleptocracy, publicly flagellated as “kleptocracy at its worst” in an international conference; while race, religion, fake news and hate speech had been employed to protect the former government leaders from any possibility of regime change in the 14th General Election.

Pakatan Harapan Ministers and deputy ministers were shocked to find that they had to ascertain and address the rot that had been left behind by the previous government before they could proceed to implement the Pakatan Harapan promises of a New Malaysia where the country can become a top world-class nation of unity, justice, freedom, excellence and integrity.

There is widespread disappointment and disillusionment among Pakatan Harapan voters and supporters who had expected political, economic, educational, socio-cultural changes in the past 500 days. Read the rest of this entry »

The three things that happened to me in my first Internal Security Act detention in Muar 1969-1970

Malaysians should dedicate the 15 days between Hari Merdeka on August 31st and Malaysia Day on September 16 every year as Malaysian Unity Season to emphasise and promote unity of diverse races, languages, regions, cultures and civilizations in Malaysia and avoid division and disunity

Malaysians of diverse races, religions and cultures are here tonight to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival.

This year’s Mid-Autumn or Mooncake Festival is special, as for the first time, the Yang di Pertuan Agong, Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah and Raja Permaisuri Agong, Tunku Hajah Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah have conveyed Mid-Autumn Festival greetings to the Chinese community in the country.

This year’s Mid-Autumn Festival fell on last Friday on Sept. 13, and I was at Wisma Sambanthan in Kuala Lumpur to launch a Tamil book of short stories by my old friend and comrade, K. Siladass.

I do not understand Tamil, but before the function, I was privileged to be given a copy of Thirukkural with translation in Malay and English by Dr. Singaravelu Sachithananthan, former head and professor of Indian Studies, University of Malaya – which must the first book of its kind in the world.

The very fact that on the night of the Mid-Autumn Festival, I was launching a Tamil book was highly symbolic that Malaysia is a confluence of four great civilisations in the world – Malay/Islamic, Chinese, Indian and Western – and Malaysia must strive to become an example to the world of the success of the Alliance of Civilisations instead of being a failure because of the Clash of Civilisations. Najib would have fully approved of the PAS-UMNO alliance of klepto-theocracy as his global kleptocracy has continued to make waves – paving the way to make PAS and UMNO “one family”

Barisan Nasional Adviser, Datuk Seri Najib Razak would have fully approved of the PAS-UMNO Alliance as his global kleptocracy is continuing to make waves – paving the way to make PAS and UMNO “one family”.

Imagine getting an Islamist party to virtually accept kleptocracy as a major plank of the alliance, which must be a “first” in the world – a founder of the Global Movement of Moderates moving on to be a founder of the Global Movement of Kleptocrats!

And even more “satisfying”, MCA and MIC are again playing ball and giving their blessing for the PAS-UMNO alliance of klepto-theocracy, despite the earlier MCA threat to “kick” UMNO out of Barisan Nasional if it “coddles up with PAS” to form an unholy pact with PAS.

A wag would have said that in celebrating the PAS-UMNO alliance of klepto-theocracy, PAS has become “kafir” which UMNO had accused it of, and UMNO become “deviant” as it had been denounced by PAS, with both endorsing the global kleptocrat as their leader, open or covert. Let the best in Thirukkural and Confucianism on how to be a good human being be part of the Malaysian heritage for Malaysia to be example to the world of the success of Alliance of Civilisations

I am like a fish out of water, launching this new book in Tamil by my friend and comrade of over fifty years, K. Siladass, which is a collection of his short stories in Tamil.

I do not understand Tamil, but before the function, I was privileged to be given a copy of Thirukkural with translation in Malay and English by Dr. Singaravelu Sachithananthan, former head and professor of Indian Studies, University of Malaya – which must the first book of its kind in the world.

This highlights the powerful symbolism of this occasion, that Malaysia is a confluence of four great civilisations in the world – Malay/Islamic, Chinese, Indian and Western – and Malaysia must strive to become an example to the world of the success of the Alliance of Civilisations instead of being a failure because of the Clash of Civilisations.

I browsed through the Thirukkural couplets, which is some 2,300 years old, dealing with everyday virtues, ethics and morality, which had influenced scholars across the ethical, social, political, economic, religious, philosophical and spiritual spheres like Tolstoy, Gandhi and Albert Schweitzer. Who will be the Prime Minister if PAS-UMNO alliance of klepto-theocracy wins the 15th General Election – Najib again or Hadi or Zahid Hamidi?

Adakah Datuk Seri Najib Razak?

Another reason “M for Malaysia” a must-see film for every Malaysian – to reaffirm that the historic decision of 9.5.2018 must succeed although it would take a longer time-span to accomplish instead of being an ignominious failure

There is another reason why the film “M for Malaysia” should be a must-see film for every Malaysian – an occasion for Malaysians to reaffirm that the historic decision of 9.5.2018 must succeed although it would take a longer time-span to accomplish instead of being an ignominious failure.

The film “M for Malaysia” documents the 14th General Election on May 9, 2018, when Malaysians shocked the world and themselves with a miraculous transition of power, peaceful and democratic, overthrowing one of the longest ruling governments in the world to reset nation-building policies to build a New Malaysia to become a country which is a top world-class nation of unity, freedom, justice, excellence and integrity.

Malaysians were so focussed on accomplishing the seemingly impossible job of overcoming insuperable odds to change the government through the ballot box that they overlooked the fact that May 9, 2018 was not a bloody revolution where the heads of those who dissented can be chopped but a peaceful democratic transition where we must win over those who had earlier disagreed with a change of government – while restoring the fundamental rights of freedom of speech and expression which were quelled by repression by the previous government.

While the film celebrates the miraculous victory of Malaysians on May 9, 2018 , it is a salutary reminder that only a battle had been won but not a war.

Just as the May 9, 2018 victory was the result of decades of “blood, sweat and tears” of courageous, passionate and patriotic Malaysians, the mission to build a New Malaysia to reset nation-building policies to undo the injustices, abuses of power and corruption of the past six decades cannot be undone in one or two years, but will take more than one general election cycle to accomplish. “M for Malaysia” a must-see film for every Malaysian as it’s a powerful antidote to the recent barrage of fake news and hate speech to create racial and religious conflagration on the baseless premise that the Malays have lost political power as the May 9, 2018 historic change was a Chinese conspiracy to grab power from the Malays

“M for Malaysia” is a must-see film for every Malaysian as it’s a powerful antidote to the recent barrage of fake news and hate speech to create racial and religious conflagration on the baseless premise that the Malays have lost political power as the May 9, 2018 historic change was a Chinese conspiracy to grab power from the Malays.

Former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak was the pedlar-in-chief of fake news and hate speech during the 14th General Election, utterly reckless of their divisive, provocative and polarizing character to tear asunder a fragile plural society comprising of diverse races, religions, languages and cultures!

Who will forget what Najib said on the eve of the 14th General Election on May 9, 2018 when he said that there were no Malays at Pakatan Harapan ceramahs and that the tens of thousands who gathered to hear Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad in the various parts in the country were DAP supporters “bussed in” by DAP, when the Special Branch and the various intelligence agencies of the government should know that in its 52-year history, DAP had never bused anyone to any DAP or Pakatan Harapan function!

Malaysians would be reminded from the film “M for Malaysia” that the crowds at the ceramahs for Mahathir and Pakatan Harapan in the 14th General Election campaign were very spontaneous and representative of the Malays, Chinese and Indians in Peninsular Malaysia, exposing the lies and falsehoods – escalated in the recent barrage of fake news and hate speech in the last few months – that the change of government on May 9, 2018 was Chinese grabbing Malay political power. Fourth Challenge to Malaysian Youths – Be in the frontline to fight corruption and to achieve the objective for Malaysia to be among world’s top 30 countries in integrity by year 2030

For the third time in ten days, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah reminded all Malaysians about the fundamentals of nation-building in a plural Malaysia as spelt out by the Malaysian Constitution and the Rukunegara.

Speaking at the investiture ceremony of federal awards and honours at Istana Negara yesterday held in conjunction with his official birthday celebration, he reminded all Malaysians not to play up sensitive issues in the interests of any party.

He said that every citizen has been promised rights and freedoms in accordance with the Federal Constitution, but that freedom must not go beyond the values that are fundamental to national unity.

He said: “So as in politics. There must be a line and limit that should not be crossed. If political polemics were left prolonged, sooner or later it will start taking its toll on the people.

“Believe me, the unity, peace and harmony that have been built over these 62 years, if we ever lose them, will be very difficult to get back.

“My advice is, let bygones be bygones, forgive and forget past disputes so that the broken relationship can be fixed and restored.”

In the past ten days, the Sultans of Perak and Selangor have also expressed similar concerns when they spoke on the importance of national unity and the dangers of uncontrolled spread of fake news and hate speech to destroy inter-racial and inter-religious understanding, tolerance and harmony in Malaysia.
