Even if Malaysia ends up a failed and bankrupt state, Penang must break ranks to continue to be a successful dynamo of justice, progress and development to save Malaysia for the future

I don’t know whether to laugh or to cry when I read the Penang Barisan Nasional attacks on the DAP-led Penang State Government as leading Penang towards a failed and bankrupt state.
Are the Penang BN leaders seriously suggesting that Penang is becoming a failed and bankrupt state? That Penang is worse than Kelantan, Terengganu, Perlis, Kedah, Pahang, Malacca, Negri Sembilan or Johor?
Ask the people all over the Penang State whether Penang is becoming a failed and bankrupt state, and the answer is a categorical “No” among the overwhelming majority of Penangites, including Barisan Nasional members, except for the few Penang Barisan Nasional leaders who have eyes that see not and ears that hear not.
Ask the people all over Malaysia, whether Malaysia is in danger of being trapped in the trajectory heading towards a failed and bankrupt state, and the answer will be a categorical “Yes” among the overwhelming majority of informed Malaysians including Barisan Nasional members.
When Malaysia achieved Independence and nationhood 60 years ago, we had high hopes and great dreams for the country to be a top world-class nation, not only progressive, forward-looking and successful in all fields of human endeavor, whether political, economic, social and educational, but to be a model to the world of unity, harmony, tolerance and mutual respect in a plural nation of diverse races, religions, languages and cultures.
Apart from Japan, we were sixty years ago the richest and most economically developed country in Asia.
Since then we have been overtaken by many – Singapore, Hong Kong, South Korea and Taiwan and unless we pull ourselves up by our bootstraps, we are in danger of being overtaken by Vietnam and Thailand, and heavens forbid, even Indonesia and the Philippines! Read the rest of this entry »
Why are there people who insist on creating the scare that DAP is anti-Malay or anti-Islam when they know these outrageous charges are fake news and false information?
DAP is a Malaysian political party, promoting the rights and interests of all races and religions in the country, and we have within our ranks Malaysians from all races and religions, whether Malays, Chinese, Indians, Ibans, Kadazans and Orang Asli; whether Muslims, Buddhists, Christians, Hindus, Sikhs or Taoists.
DAP is not anti-Malay and anti-Islam as demonstrated by the record of the nine-year DAP-led Penang State Government, serving interests of all Malaysians in Penang, regardless of race, religion or socio-economic background.
We cannot be anti-Malay or anti-Islam for this will be anti-Malaysian, which comprise the diverse races and religions in the country.

Sabah should be model of inter-religious harmony, understanding, solidarity and unity with zero tolerance for extremism to Malaysia and the world

My three-day visit to Sabah, partaking in the Pesta Kaamatan celebrations in Bingkor in Keningau, breaking fast with Sabahans of diverse religions and diverse ethnic groups whether Bajau, Murut, Kadazan or Chinese in Tanjong Aru, and visiting the more than 10,000-strong Bajau fishermen Kampung Numbak squatter settlement in Sepanggar who had been marginalised after being forced to move from Teluk Sepanggar over a decade ago because of the Sepanggar Submarine Naval Base project, has reinforced my belief that Sabah should be a model of inter-religious harmony, understanding, solidarity and unity with zero tolerance for extremism not only for Malaysia but also the world.
There are scores of ethnic groups in Sabah, with adherents of diverse religious faiths in one family or village – but all living harmoniously with understanding, tolerance, solidarity and unity, taking part in each other’s religious festivities without distrust, suspicion, venom or hatred!
In Sabah, we see Wasatiyyah or moderation and tolerance in action, lived in real life and not just preached from minbars, rostrums, pulpits or international conferences!
This is an useful and even precious experience and example in today’s very troubled world, where the rancorous and discordant voices of extremism or fanaticism, preaching hate, distrust, suspicion, intolerance and conflict are trying to hijack and dominate public discourse and mainstream space. Malaysia’s continued decline in international competitiveness was again highlighted a few days ago when it slipped another five notches to 24th place in latest World Competitiveness Yearbook (WCY) by the Institute for Management Development (IMD) – after falling to 19th spot last year from 14th in 2015.
It is Malaysia’s lowest ranking in five years and the country cannot take comfort that it remained the second most competitive ASEAN country behind Singapore.
Malaysia is losing out in the race of nations for development and progress, and the recent spate of incidents which signaled the rise of racial and religious extremism in the country would aggravate this national decline and fall into a failed state.
Malaysia must stop the present trajectory towards the politics of lies, hatred and fear to exploit racial and religious divisions by fanning intolerance, distrust and extremism in the country.
Malaysians must unite and stop fighting among ourselves, but must leverage on the best qualities and values from the diversity of races, religions and cultures in Malaysia so that we are not left behind in the international race of nations for development and progress. Read the rest of this entry »

Moderate Malaysians regardless of race, religion or politics must be very concerned that of late, the voices of hatred, intolerance and extremism are rearing their ugly heads.
Moderate Malaysians, regardless of race, religion or politics, must speak up strongly and steadfastly for peace, tolerance, understanding and mutual respect and not cede any single inch of mainstream ground to the advocates of hatred, intolerance and extremism or Malaysia will be heading towards a perilous and disastrous end.
Malaysia can only succeed as a world-class nation by leveraging on the best qualities embedded in the diverse races, languages, religions, cultures and civilizations which meet in confluence in Malaysia.
There is therefore no option but for Malaysia to pursue a policy of moderation in our nation-building policies and directions which give primacy to the goals of unity, peace, tolerance, understanding, mutual respect and excellence.
We will end up as a broken and a failed state if we do not resist the siren song of extremists who preach distrust, hatred and intolerance, and want to build walls segregating the diverse races, religions and cultures in Malaysia. Read the rest of this entry »

Ramadan of 2017 is of special significance for Malaysia for moderate Malaysians should launch a virtuous movement of goodwill and solidarity among Malaysians regardless of race, religion or politics to build a nation of peace, tolerance, understanding and mutual respect to defeat those who want Malaysia to be trapped in a vicious circle of hate, enmity, intolerance, mutual distrust and extremism.
Pakatan Harapan leaders from PKR, Amanah, Pribumi Bersatu and DAP are visiting Pasar Ramadan in various parts of Johore and Malaysia to spread the message of peace, tolerance, understanding and mutual respect among the citizenry, regardless of race, religion or politics, for this is the best way to counter the evil designs of irresponsible elements who want Malaysians to be divided or torn asunder by hate, enmity, intolerance and mutual distrust, solely based on factors of race or religion.
It is a sad commentary on our failure in nation-building in the past six decades to lay a strong and powerful foundation for a united, harmonious, tolerant multi-racial, multi-lingual, multi-religious and multi-cultural nation that on the 60th anniversary of our National Day celebrations this year, there are forces in Malaysia preaching hate, enmity, intolerance and mutual distrust trying to divide Malaysians based on race or religion.

The past week had been a sober reminder that we are living in dangerous times, with the senseless bombings and killings in Manchester, Jakarta and Egypt, causing the death of over 50 innocent lives and the injury of scores of others as a result of bigotry, intolerance and extremism.
In Malaysia, there has recently been an intensification of the politics of lies, hate and fear coupled with irresponsible politics of race and religion which must be condemned by all right-thinking Malaysians who want the country to be an oasis of peace, tolerance, harmony and goodwill in the midst of diverse races, religions and cultures.

This year is the 60th National Day Anniversary celebration to mark the nation’s independence on August 31, 1957.
Unfortunately, instead of a more united, harmonious, progressive and prosperous Malaysia, we see Malaysia falling behind more and more countries in various fields of human endeavor in the past six decades, and what is worse, there are people who are trying to put back the clock of Malaysian nation-building by sowing distrust, hatred and animosity and instead of greater tolerance, harmony and unity in multi-racial, multi-religious and multi-cultural Malaysia.

I call on all political parties, whether in government or opposition, to take an united stand to condemn mischief makers who want to create chaos in the country by falsely framing the forthcoming 14th General Election as a battle between Malays and Chinese as well as between Islam and enemies of Islam.
This is the height of mischief and even treason.
The forthcoming 14th General Election is not a battle between Malays and Chinese, nor is it a battle between Islam and the enemies of Islam.
The 14th General Election is a battle between Malaysians vs Malaysians, for a democratic Malaysia with accountability and good governance or a kleptocracy which rejects the principles of democratic good governance.
It is for Malaysians, regardless of race or religion to ponder deep and hard why Malaysia in the past six decades had failed to live up to the promise when we achieved Merdeka on August 31, 1957 to be united, harmonious, democratic, progressive, prosperous multi-racial, multi-religious and multi-cultural nation; save Malaysia and re-set nation-building directions and policies for Malaysians to compete with the rest of the world and not to fight among ourselves and lose out in the international race of nations for development and progress. Kamarul Zaman’s police report against Hannah Yeoh raises the question whether he is fit and proper to be a lecturer of plural Malaysia’s public university

Kamarul Zaman Yusof’s false and malicious police report against Selangor Speaker and DAP Selangor State Assemblywoman for Subang Jaya, Hannah Yeoh, accusing her of proselytization of Muslims with the publication of her autobiography “Being Hannah”, raises the question whether he is fit and proper to be a lecturer of plural Malaysia’s public universities.
It is a further sign that the Malaysian nation-building process, after six decades, have gone terribly wrong and must be corrected.
It is unimaginable that Hannah Yeoh’s autobiography on her personal journey to be a good Christian so as to be a good Malaysian would have caused objections, let alone be the subject of a false and malicious police report of proselytization to Muslims, in the first five decades of our nationhood. A nation is like a boat on a river. Face the craft in the wrong direction and it would end up downstream in the marshy delta in short order, with minimal or no effort. It would languish there in the mud, at the mercy of the tides and floods. Face your boat sideways to head for the comfort of the nearby shore and you risk being broadsided by the current. Even if your boat were to face upstream, you could still end up downstream, albeit more slowly, for lack of paddling.
By facing our boat upstream and paddling hard, Malaysians have achieved much and traversed many superior fishing grounds as well as enjoyed numerous beautiful sights. Malaysians have also met and mingled with many upstream people, folks used to and comfortable in waters that are fresh, cool, and clean. In playing the race and religious cards at the 71st UMNO anniversary last night, the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Razaak has wiped out the credibility of his Vesak Day speech that extremism should be “very few on the fringe”.
This is because Najib had given extremism the centre stage when he said last night: “For PAS, DAP is the enemy of Islam, while for Umno, DAP is the enemy of the Malays.”
This is part of the UMNO/BN demonization campaign of lies, hate and fear which Najib had directed UMNO cybertroopers to launch against the DAP in the middle of last month.
Over the decades, DAP had worked for a Malaysian cause with Malay and Muslim leaders, whether from PAS, UMNO or other parties, including Tunku Abdul Rahman, Tun Hussein Onn, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, Tan Sri Rais Yatim, Datuk Fadzil Noor, Datuk Seri Nik Aziz Nik Mat, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Datuk Seri Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Mohamad Sabu, among many others.
Is it seriously suggested that the three former Prime Ministers, Tengku Abdul Rahman, Tun Hussein and Tun Mahathir, one-time UMNO stalwarts like Tengku Razaleigh Hamzan, Tan Sri Rais Yatim, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, former PAS President Fadzil Nor and former PAS Mursyidul Am Nik Aziz had been puppets and stooges of DAP to serve DAP’s anti-Malay and anti-Islam objectives? It was always an inspiring occasion to attend a DAP function in Petaling Jaya, which had for decades been the DAP fort in the political struggle for an united, just, democratic and progressive Malaysia.
What made tonight’s DAP dinner even more significant are two events.
Firstly, the presentation by two of the country’s most patriotic Malaysians on their contribution towards building a better Malaysia at great personal costs – DAP PJ Utara MP Tony Pua who continues to cause the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to have sleepless nights because of his relentless pursuit of Malaysia’s greatest financial scandal, the multi-billion dollar 1MDB international money-laundering scandal which had turned Malaysia overnight into a global kleptocracy and the PKR MP for Pandan Rafizi Ramli who had similarly pursued and exposed relentlessly the SRC International dimension of the 1MDB kleptocratic scandal, naming names – individuals, companies and political parties.
But what has made tonight’s event most unique is the presentation of five young Malaysians, of various races from both gender, representing the new cohort of Malaysians who are equally committed to continue the struggle of a united, just, democratic and progressive Malaysia. We are here to remember and honour Sdr. Karpal Singh – a giant of a Malaysian who had dedicated his life to a more united, just, equal and democratic Malaysia.
There are two ways to remember and honour Karpal, who left us three years ago with many unfinished national business.
The first is to elect a DAP-led government for the third term in Penang and the second is to elect Pakatan Harapan to form the Federal Government in Putrajaya to Save Malaysia from global kleptocracy and from heading towards a failed and a rogue state.
This year Malaysians will be celebrating our 60th National Day to commemorate the nation’s attainment of Independence on August 31, 1957.
I was in Form III in Batu Pahat High School in 1957, I can still remember that on August 31, 1957, we gathered at the school compound where every student was given a bunting of the new national flag and a scroll setting out the Proclamation of Merdeka which was declared by the first Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman at the Merdeka Stadium in Kuala Lumpur.

I believe Malaysia is heading for a major political change in the forthcoming 14th General Election as never before in the nation’s 60-year history is there such widespread and deep-seated restiveness and unhappiness among the people, including the 1.6 million-strong civil service, against the UMNO/BN Government.
The time has come for Malaysia to become a normal democratic country, where the voters can peacefully and democratically change the Federal Government in Putrajaya through the ballot box, as in countries recognized as normal democracies, whether the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, New Zealand, the European countries like Germany, France, Italy and others, or even Asian countries like Japan, India, South Korea, Philippines and Indonesia.
The voters should not be threatened with chaos, riots or undemocratic and authoritarian measures to frustrate the democratic will of the people expressed in a general election, as the UMNO/BN leaders are trying to do.
In trying to cling on to power, UMNO/BN politicians have resorted to the politics of lies, fear and hate to disseminate the fear among Malay voters that if UMNO is defeated in the 14GE, Malays will lose political power and their rights in the country.
This is of course rubbish and nonsense, for the Pakatan Harapan coalition comprising DAP, PKR, AMANAH and Pribumi Bersatu want to win, not just the 14th GE, but the 15th, 16th GE and others so that it could continue to form the Federal Government – which means that the Pakatan Harapan government must demonstrate that it could deliver results and do better than the UMNO/BN government to protect and promote the rights and interests of all communities in the country, including the Malays. Cabinet should seriously consider the Pensiangan Formula on promoting national unity among the diverse races, religions and regions in Malaysia

The last day of Parliament on Thursday was a black-letter day for nation building and national unity in Malaysia – not only because Parliament adjourned ahead of normal adjournment time at 5.30 p.m. of the day to disallow a debate on PAS President Datuk Seri Hadi Awang’s private member’s bill motion to amend the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act or RUU 355, although Members of Parliament from Pakatan Harapan were prepared to take part in the debate, but also because the issue was allowed in the past year to become the most divisive issue in our plural nation of diverse races, religions and cultures.
It has been reported that the latest development in RUU 355 issue in the next meeting of Parliament will be an amendment to exclude the application of Hadi’s private member’s bill in Sabah and Sarawak so as to avoid the opposition of the 57 Sabah and Sarawak Members of Parliament – which will only highlight the divisive nature of the measure.
We should revisit the Pensiangan Formula which I proposed when visiting Pensiangan in Sabah last December to ensure that national unity should always be the paramount consideration for Members of Parliament, especially on controversial issues affecting religion. Read the rest of this entry »

Mohamed Tawfik Ismail, the son of the second Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Dr Ismail Abdul Rahman, yesterday filed a lawsuit asking the courts to declare that PAS President, Datuk Seri Hadi Awang’s private member’s bill to amend the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act (Act 355) is unconstitutional, and seeking an order from the High Court in Kuala Lumpur to prohibit the Dewan Rakyat from allowing Hadi’s motion to be tabled and debated in Parliament.
The grounds advanced by Mohamed Tawfik was that Hadi’s private member’s bill was unconstitutional, flouts Parliamentary procedures and in contempt of the Rulers’ Conference as prior consent was not obtained.
Imagine what would have happened if there is a court application against the DAP on the ground that a DAP MP had submitted a private member’s bill which was in contempt of the Rulers’ Conference as prior consent was not obtained.
The Office of the UMNO Directorate of Strategic Communications/Lies would have swung into action and hordes of protestors and demonstrators would have demonstrated outside DAP offices in the country for being anti-Malay Rulers, making all sorts of demands, while on the cyberspace, the UMNO cybertroopers would be working overtime to demonise DAP leaders as having committed treason in showing disrespect and contempt for the Malay Rulers. Pagi tadi saya hidupkan semula telefon lama yang sudah separuh nyawa. Telefon pintar yang dibeli pada tahun 2014 itu telah saya ganti dengan yang baru. Pastinya lebih canggih dan laju. Namun kerana sedikit rasa sentimental, saya hidupkan kembali setelah hampir tiga bulan ia ‘mati’.
Meski sudah hampir ajal dengan bateri yang hanya bertahan tiga jam, saya kira ia masih boleh diguna untuk tugas-tugas ringan menjadi penggera bangun tidur dan buat memainkan radio. Maka telefon itu akhirnya saya ‘reset’ ke tetapan kilang, dan ia pun kembali ke fitrah asalnya.
Demikian nasib barang-barang elektronik zaman kini. Asal berpenyakit, tekan butang ‘reset’ maka sihatlah ia semula.
Tetapi kalau yang menanggung sakit itu sebuah negara, di celah mana harus ditekan butang ‘reset’nya. Read the rest of this entry »
