How did we lose our way in our journey started 60 years ago to pursue the Merdeka Dream?

Congratulations to the 844-strong Malaysian contingent for the golden harvest of 145 gold medals, 92 silver and 86 bronze at the 2017 SEA Games which concluded yesterday.
This is the only silver lining and glimmer of hope in the 60th Merdeka Anniverary celebrations today – a far cry from this day sixty years ago when we set out as a young nation, brimming with hope and confidence, dedicated, in the words of the Merdeka Proclamation 1957 and reaffirmed in the Malaysia Proclamation six year later, that the nation “shall be for ever a sovereign democratic and independent State founded upon the principles of liberty and justice and ever seeking the welfare and happiness of its people and the maintenance of a just peace among all nations”.
The remarkable and unprecedented Merdeka video “Citizen” by Pete Teo where the MCA President and Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai took on a double acting role, captured the Malaysian malaise sixty years after Merdeka – the sense of hopelessness even despair, felt by patriotic Malaysians at the state of Malaysia today. On the occasion of the 60th Merdeka Anniversary, I call on all Malaysians, regardless of race, religion, region or politics, to make a common commitment to be more patriotic than the Cabinet Ministers and resolve to save Malaysia from kleptocracy and extremism and to revive the Merdeka Dream for Malaysia to be a word-class nation in every field of human endeavor.
Two days ago on Monday, I issued an Open Letter to all Cabinet Ministers asking them to take a patriotic stand at the Cabinet meeting today on the eve of the 60th Merdeka Anniversary to veto Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak from visiting White House to meet President Trump on Sept. 12 to spare 30 million Malaysians international shame and humiliation as the US Government had virtually branded the Malaysian Prime Minister as kleptocrat by being “MO1” in the United States Department of Justice (DOJ)’s kleptocratic litigation to forfeit US$1.7 billion 1MDB-assets in the United States, the United Kingdom and Switzerland.
In the last two years, Najib has not cleared or cleansed himself after being branded by the American Government as a kleptocrat by being “MO1” in the US DOJ’s largest kleptocratic forfeiture suits.
Najib cannot deny that he is “MO1” as his Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department in charge of Economic Planning Unit, Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Dahlan, had told the world in a BBC interview last September that only an idiot would not know that the US DOJ reference of “MO1” was referring to none other than Najib.
The corruption problem in Malaysia has come to a stage where even Perak Sultan Nazrin has declared publicly that sixty years after Merdeka, corruption has become one of Malaysia’s major ills. Read the rest of this entry »

Much has changed in the world since 1957 when Malaysia achieved its Merdeka (independence), with the pace ever accelerating. Great Britain is no longer great, and the Austins and Morris Minors that used to ply Malaysian roads are today found if at all only in the junkyards and collectors’ garages.
The social landscape too has changed. The Lake Club, a cool oasis in the heart of humid bustling Kuala Lumpur, was once the bastion of colonial privilege where British miners, planters and civil servants retired during the heat of the day to enjoy their stengahs (stouts) and steak, uninterrupted by the offensive sights of the natives spitting on the ground, Chinese maids grunting to clear their throats, and Indian laborers incessantly squirting blood-like betel nut juice through their rotten teeth. Those disgusting and unsanitary habits of the non-colonials could spoil one’s appetite in very short order regardless of the physical ambience.
The staid upscale Robinson Department Store was then thriving despite its lack of customers, at least the native variety. Exclusiveness equaled profitability, a concept that is still being aggressively pursued by today’s advertisers in their endless search for lucrative niches. For Robinson, there was little need to cater to the natives; they did not have the money anyway. The few wealthy ones spotted inspecting the store’s merchandise were only too happy to pay the exorbitant prices for the privilege of rubbing shoulders however briefly with their colonial counterparts. For the store, that was an opportunity to jack up the prices and rake in the profits. Then, as now, there was always money to be made catering to people’s vanity, up to a point. I call on all Malaysians, regardless of race, religion, region or politics to return to the core values for the building of an united, harmonious, prosperous and successful Malaysian nation on the 60th anniversary of the nation attaining Merdeka on 31st August 1957.
That something has gone terribly wrong with the Malaysian experiment of plural nation-building can be gleaned from the following four disturbing developments:
Firstly, the recent police warning that the Islamic State (IS) is planning to launch an attack in Perak during the upcoming Merdeka celebrations.
Secondly, Malaysia losing international recognition even among international Islamic scholars and academicians as a moderate nation.
Thirdly, the trend towards greater rowdyism and thuggery in political and public life, as witnessed by the riot at the “Nothing to Hide 2.0” forum at Shah Alam on Sunday, targeting former Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad with flares and flying chairs, slippers and bottles.
Fourthly, the intensification of lies, fake news and false information in publicity and propaganda organs of the government.
Fifthly, the collapse of Malaysia’s good name and international standing because Malaysia new-found infamy as a global kleptocracy and our inability to clear or cleanse the country of such notoriety. Read the rest of this entry »

On the second day of the wake for Kerk Kim Hock’s death, let Malaysians be part of a national campaign to “Love Malaysia, Save Malaysia, Change Malaysia” in memory of Kerk Kim Hock’s life-long political struggle and sacrifices to save Malaysia from kleptoracy and kakistocracy.
In the past two years, Malaysia’s international reputation plunged to the lowest depth in the nation’s 60 year history as we are regarded worldwide as a global kleptocracy.
The Prime Minister and the Umno/Barisan Nasiuonal government not only has no political will to clear or cleanse Malaysia of the international infamy and ignominy of a global kleptocracy, it seems to be doing its utmost to compromise the reputation and standing of the major institutions of the country by making them allies in the great charade to suppress all accountability about the 1MDB scandal.
The recent three-week meeting of Parliament ended yesterday, which achieved a major blot in Malaysian parliamentary history with questions by over 30 Members of Parliament on the 1MDB scandal rejected by the Speaker of the House on the most ridiculous and indefensible grounds.
As a result, those who want to reduce the Malaysian Parliament into a 1MDB Parliament seem to have succeeded, with Parliament taking part in a national and international charade pretending that the 1MDB scandal does not exist by banning questions and debates on the 1MDB scandal in the Malaysian Parliament.
But the national and international charade orchestrated from Putrajaya requires not just Parliament, but all major national institutions to participate fully in the national and international charade pretending that the 1MDB scandal does not exist – like reducing the Judiciary, AG’s Chambers, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, Bank Negara, Police, the media into 1MDB Judiciary, 1MDB AG’s Chambers, 1MDB MACC, 1MDB Bank Negara, 1MDB Police, 1MDB media etc!
Do we have enough upright, honest and God-fearing Malaysians to ensure that these who want to make Parliament, Judiciary, AG’s Chambers, MACCA, Bank Negara, Police, the media and other national institutions to participate fully in the national and international charade pretending that the 1MDB scandal does not exist do not succeed? Many historic events took place in Malacca, the nation’s oldest heritage city.
For instance, on 20th February 1956, Bapa Malaysia Tunku Abdul Rahman chose Padang Bandar Hilir in Malacca to announce that Malaya would achieve independence on August 31, 1957.
Closer in time, in 1984, the people of Malacca spearheaded an impossible mission when they successfully led a “Save Bukit China campaign” to preserve the oldest cemetry heritage hill in the country.
This is the country’s 60th National Day anniversary to commemorate the nation’s attainment of Merdeka on 31st August, 1957.
Yesterday, the country lost a great patriot and nationalist with the death of Kerk Kim Hock, the fourth DAP Secretary-General and a two-term Member of Parliament as well as a one-term Malacca State Assemblyman.
Kerk had dedicated his life to his ideals to make Malaysia a great nation worthy of the Merdeka Proclamation 1957 and Malaysia Proclamation 1963 that the nation “shall be for ever a sovereign democratic and independent State founded upon the principles of liberty and justice and ever seeking the welfare and happiness of its people and the maintenance of a just peace among all nations”. In 2012, on the cusp of the 13th General Election, Malaysians were presented with a trailer to the movie Tanda Putera. The trailer, supposedly of a cinematic representation of the relationship between the late Tun Razak and his deputy Tun Dr Ismail, became a farce when I was apparently made a target alongside a narrative of how I had urinated at the flag pole in the compound of the Menteri Besar of Selangor’s residence, during the days leading up to the riots of May 13th.
Before the 2008 elections, there was never any mention of me being the person responsible for the May 13th 1969. After the tsunami of March 8th 2008, the DAP and I were repackaged as a new target to complete a new narrative of how the Chinese and the DAP were the bad guys in the single most dark episode in the history of our nation.
I responded with a series of explanations and clarifications, emphasizing that I was neither in Kuala Lumpur nor was I in any part of any rallies leading up to the riots. If I were, the Special Branch would have had enough evidence to prove me so, and charge me in court. That did not happen.
Five years after Tanda Putera and the efforts of the powers that be to frame the DAP as the culprit behind racial tensions since 1969, a new bogey has been spotted in the form of another cinematic trailer of a movie entitled ‘Malay Regiment’.
I am told that the movie is about the younger generation seeking knowledge of the sacrifices made by their grandfathers who fought against the Communists in 1976. Read the rest of this entry »

Today is August 1, 2017 – the 30th Day Countdown to the 60th National Day Anniversary to celebrate the nation’s attainment of Merdeka on August 31, 1957.
It is utterly shameful and disgraceful when we should be focused on how to achieve the lost Malaysian dream to be a world-class nation of achievement and excellence in every field of human endeavour, we are instead caught in a ugly dogfight insulting each other’s lineage and heritage.
As if further proof is needed, this is further evidence of how serious things have gone wrong in our six decades of nationhood.
I was in Form III in Batu Pahat High School, and all students were assembled in the school padang to hear the Proclamation of Merdeka read out by the founding Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman at Merdeka Stadium in Kuala Lumpur, culminating with the chanting of “Merdeka” seven times.
Reading out the Merdeka Proclamation, Tunku Abdul Rahman pledged that the nation “shall be for ever a sovereign democratic and independent State founded upon the principles of liberty and justice and ever seeking the welfare and happiness of its people and the maintenance of a just peace among all nations”.
When the country achieved independent nationhood on August 31, 1957, it heralded the beginning of a new era where all its citizens could dare to dream big dreams to remake the world.
But have we been able to achieve world-class status in every field of human endeavor, whether political, economic, educational, social, environmental or on good governance after sixty years?

Call on Zahid Hamidi to resign as DPM and MP if he is not prepared to uphold his oath as DPM and MP to “preserve, protect and defend” the Malaysian Constitution, including Article 4 on Malaysian Constitution as the supreme law of Malaysia

I am shocked by the call by the Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Zahid Hamidi for Muslim unity to oppose anyone challenging decisions by the National Fatwa Committee, in response to the Court of Appeal ruling that a child conceived out of wedlock can take his or her father’s surname, and that the edict on this by the National Fatwa Committee does not have the force of law.
This is because Zahid is not only challenging the authority of the civil courts to make decisions affecting the life and liberty of Malaysians, but dishonouring his oaths as Deputy Prime Minister and Member of Parliament to “preserve, protect and defend” the Malaysian Constitution.
I want to remind Zahid of Article 4 of the Malaysian Constitution which states clearly and unequivocably that the Malaysian Constitution is the supreme law of Malaysia, and Zahid has taken oath of offices as Member of Parliament and Deputy Prime Minister to “preserve, protect and defend” the Malaysian Constitution.
Zahid should retract his statement which challenges Article 4 of the Malaysian Constitution and he should resign as Deputy Prime Minister and Member of Parliament if he is not prepared to “preserve, protect and defend” the Malaysian Constitution, including Article 4 on the supremacy of the Constitution as the “supreme law” in Malaysia.
Zahid should not take too long to retract his call in his officiating speech at a Hari Raya event with the Malabari community in Selayang on Friday night or tender his resignation as Deputy Prime Minister and Member of Parliament if he is not prepared to honour his oaths of office as DPM and MP to “preserve, protect and defend” the Malaysian Constitution.

Two things for Malaysian voters to prove at the 14th GE – that Malaysians reject kleptocracy and is a normal democratic country

There are two things for Malaysian voters to prove in the next 14th General Election – firstly, that Malaysians reject kleptocracy; and secondly, that Malaysia is a normal democratic country.
I do not believe there a single person who would think when the country attained Merdeka on August 31, 1957 or when Malaysia was formed on Sept. 16, 1963 that the nation would become not just a kleptocracy, but a “global kleptocracy”.
Malaysia only became known as a “global kleptocracy” after the 13th General Election in May 2013.
This is quite an achievement of sorts in so short of time, but Malaysians must demonstrate in the 14th General Elections that they are not proud of such “achievement” and do not want such international infamy and ignominy for the country, where they are shy when overseas to admit that they are Malaysians for they do want to answer questions revolving around “MO1”or the RM117 million pink diamond necklance for “wife of MO1”.
For six decades, the political rulers in Malaysia from Barisan Nasional have acquired the traits of a “big bully” which can be seen by the high-handed and arbitrary manner in which they tried to disqualify the DAP Sarawak State Assemblyman for Pujut, Dr. Ting Tiong Choon with the brute Barisan Nasional majority in the Sarawak State Assembly.
Another example of Barisan Nasional as the “big bully” trampling on the human rights of Malaysians is the high-handed and arbitrary ban of political activist Hiew Kuan Yau from entering Sarawak this evening to be guest speaker at this Miri DAP Branch dinner. Read the rest of this entry »

At tonight’s DAP ceramah, I am going do something unusual.
I am going to read out verbatim the cry from the bottom of the heart of one distinguished and outstanding Malaysian, as his cry resonates throughout the country, as it represents the concerns of patriotic and loyal Malaysians, regardless of race, religion, politics or region, that something very wrong is happening to our beloved country – although the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Razak, his Cabinet of 36 Ministers, and the entire UMNO/Barisan Nasional leadership does not agree with this cry and concern.
One reason why I reading verbatim the cry of Tunku Makhota Johor, Tunku Ismail ibni Sultan Ibrahim, which was first posted in Johor Southern Tigers Facebook, is because it should be compulsory reading and study by all Malaysians, not only the citizenry but also national and state leaders.

My three-day “Jelajah Raya di Panti Timor” in Pahang, Terengganu and Kelantan have vindicated me and confirmed what I had always believed – that the lies and falsehoods which form the core of the UMNO demonisation campaign against me and DAP leaders, painting us as anti-Malay and anti-Islam, do not have any traction with the majority of Malays and Muslims, as they are not so stupid and irrational as to succumb to the lies, fake news and false information pumped out by the UMNO propaganda mills of lies and falsehoods.
During my “Jelajah Raya di Pantai Timur”, I visited the warongs in Pasir Puteh, Ketereh and Machang, and the ordinary Malays I met at these warongs have only friendliness , goodwill and kindness for the visiting DAP group.
There was not a single trace of suspicion, distrust, hate or malice which would not be the case if the vicious and long-standing black propaganda of UMNO to paint me as quite a devil, a puaka, even jembalang; that I am anti-Malay, anti-Islam; cause of May 13, 1969 riots; a communist; a stooge of foreign powers; that I dominate Pakatan Harapan and made other leaders like Tun Mahathir Mohamad, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Datuk Seri Wan Azizah, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Datuk Seri Azmin Ali, Mohamad Sabu and Husam Musa into my stooges and puppets, have credibility and are believed to be true by ordinary Malays and Muslims in the country.
In fact, my warong visits and “Jelajah Raya di Pantai Timur” have vindicated and fortified my belief that ordinary Malaysians, whether Malays, Chinese, Indians, Kadazans or Ibans, whether Muslims, Buddhists, Christians, Hindus or Sikhs do not want or support extremism in whatever form. Perutusan Aidilfitri pada hari Sabtu, 24 Jun 2017 di Gelang Patah
Syeikh Abdullah Bin Bayyah, presiden Forum Memupuk Keamanan dalam Masyarakat Muslim (Forum for Promoting Peace in Muslim Societies) dilaporkan berkata dalam World Economic Forum 2017 di Davos Januari lalu, seperti berikut:
“Saya ingin menyeru semua orang yang mempunyai niat yang baik. Kita mesti menyusun gerakan untuk bekerja dan berjuang bersama. Saya tidak menyebut seperti Marx, ‘pekerja sedunia bersatulah’; tetapi saya menyeru orang baik di seluruh dunia supaya bersatu.”
Saya harus bersetuju dengan Bin Bayyah dalam hal ini. Orang baik-baik di seluruh dunia, terutamanya di Malaysia harus mencari titik-titik pertemuan pada nilai-nilai sepunya, agar dapat mendidik masyarakat supaya saling hormat menghormati dan bertoleransi serta saling memahami, dalam usaha besar untuk menyelamatkan Malaysia daripada menjadi sebuah negara yang mempunyai masyarakat yang gagal dan saling bercakaran sesama sendiri.
Kita percaya bahawa manusia secara fitrahnya dilahirkan tanpa rasa saling membenci dan bermusuhan. Aidilfitri pula ertinya kembali kepada fitrah, yang bukan sahaja bersih dan suci dari dosa tetapi juga kembali kepada asas fitrah insani yang tidak mempunyai prejudis perkauman atau diskriminasi berasaskan keturunan, agama, daerah mahupun latar ekonomi.
Oleh yang demikian, bersempena dengan Aidilfitri kali ini, saya ingin menyeru seluruh rakyat Malaysia agar kembali kepada asas-asas kemanusiaan; selain kembali kepada asas-asas yang telah dibina oleh mereka yang terdahulu dalam membangunkan negara yang berbilang kaum dan agama. DAP condemns the politics and mentality of kafir against a Malacca State Exco Member, Datuk Lim Ban Hong , who was referred to as a “kafir” (infidel) in a WhatsApp message on Sunday over his visit to a multi-purpose hall near a mosque in Bukit Rambai, Malacca to hand over Hari Raya goodies.
The Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron had said that it was “uncivilised and uncouth” to label a person as an infidel when Lim was doing a noble deed by providing goodies to the underprivileged.
Extremism of whatever form must not be allowed to rear their ugly heads in plural Malaysia or the strength of Malaysia’s diversity of races, religions, languages and cultures would become our fatal weaknesses to divide and tear the nation asunder.

UMNO Information Chief, Annuar Musa’s desperate and unabashed appeal to the primordial politics of religion has confirmed my initial suspicion that Putrajaya had been very jittery and most hysterical about the latest United States Department of Justice (DOJ) kleptocratic action on forfeiture of US$1.7 billion of 1MDB-linked assets.
Was this why the three Najib loyalists in the Cabinet, the Defence Minister, Datuk Hishamuddin Hussein, the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan and the Communications and Multimedia Minister, Datuk Seri Salleh Said Keruak had risked their public reputations with ridiculous salvoes to the DOJ in coming to the defence of the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Razak since the third spate of DOJ kleptocratic suits in California last Thursday?
It is understandable it is not easy to maintain equanimity when two whammies involving two biggest financial scandals of the first magnitude in the nation’s history exploded in the month of Ramadan – the new US DOJ kleptocratic action and the Felda Global Ventures Holdings Bhd (FGV) scandal – especially when so much preparation had been made for the Najib administration to take the political offensive in the month of Ramadan in preparation for the 14th General Election.

Call on all religions in Malaysia to unite with common objective to make Malaysia the beacon and inspiration for the world as a showcase of multi-religious harmony, understanding, tolerance, solidarity and unity

When the nation achieved Merdeka in 1957 and Malaysia was formed in 1963, religion was conceived as an important nation-building block for the country to be a showcase to the world how a multi-racial, multi-religious, multi-lingual and multi-cultural country could unite as one successful, progressive and prosperous nation with harmony, understanding, tolerance, solidarity and unity from our various diversities of race, religion, language and culture.
This is a time to take stock of our six decades of nation-building, for Malaysia seems to have lost its way – the nation losing its moral compass and forfeiting our moral high ground in the international community.
After six decades, Malaysia has not been able to leverage on our maximum potentials, whether in the political, economic, social, educational, human resources development and nation-building spheres – being increasingly left behind by many countries like Singapore, Taiwan, South Korea and Hong Kong which were behind us during our early years of nationhood, and now at risk of being overtaken by even more countries, especially, Vietnam, Thailand and even Indonesia.
China and Indonesia had trailed far behind Malaysia on the anti-corruption front, but in the past few decades, Malaysia has gradually but relentlessly lost ground to these two countries, until the question now is not whether, but when China and Indonesia will overtake Malaysia as a less corrupt country! Who killed Thaqif, Zulfarhan and Nhaveen? Not just the murderers but a society which allows bullies to take law into their own hands and moderates allow extremists to incite intolerance, distrust, hate and violence

In April, 11-year old Mohamad Thaqif Amin Mohd Gaddafi, a student who was beaten and abused at his tahfiz religious boarding school, died from his injuries. But not before he had both his legs amputated, was put into an induced coma and almost had to have his arm amputated as well.
It is alleged that Thaqif was beaten with a rubber hose repeatedly. His beatings caused him to get a serious bacterial infection.
On June 1, Zulfarhan Osman, 21, a third year electrical engineering student, died at the Serdang Hospital after suffering bruises and burns on his body, allegedly due to torture by his university mates.
In Penang, T. Nhaveen, 18, a teenager who was bashed up brutally by a group of teenagers using helmets as well as tortured with a sharp object penetrated into his anus, died at the Penang Hospital on Thursday after a five-day coma, was buried in tearful funeral yesterday.
What went wrong?

Why UMNO leaders like Razali and Zainal treat Najib’s wasatiyah principles of moderation, justice, balance and excellence with contempt in Ramadan month by telling lies and support extremist behaviour?

We are past the midpoint of the Ramadan month and it is most regrettable that this holy month for Muslims in Malaysians to be better Muslims – just as we want non-Muslim Malaysians to be better Buddhists, better Christians, better Hindus, better Sikhs and better Taoists so as to become better Malaysians – had been marred by various incidents contrary to the values of peace, tolerance, mutual respect, goodwill and solidarity we want to inculcate among the diverse races and religions in the country.
There was firstly the voice of intolerance, distrust and even hate demanding that non-Muslims should be excluded from all buka puasa events.
Then there was the disgraceful episode at the Bazaar Ramadan Kluang where DAP MP for Kluang Liew Chin Tong was roughed up on a visit of goodwill and solidarity.
In the holy month of Ramadan, gutter politics and the politics of lies, falsehood and incitement of hatred reached new depths when Selangor DAP leader and municipal councillor Young Syefura Othman, or better known as Rara, was demonised on the social media for her visits to Ramadan bazaar in Cheras while DAP National Vice Chairman and MP for Seputeh, Teresa Kok, had to lodge a police report over a false press statement released under her name in connection with a “Jerusalem’s Jubilee” event in Melaka, when she had no idea what the event was all about! It is most regrettable that there are UMNO leaders who are defending undemocratic, violent and extremist behaviour like the obstruction and roughing up of DAP MP for Kluang, Liew Chin Tong, when visiting Pasar Ramadan Kluang to distribute dates and spread the message of harmony and solidarity.
I commend the UMNO Youth leader and Minister for Youth and Sports, Khairy Jamaluddin, for condemning such thuggish and extremist behaviour, tweeting that such behaviour is contrary to the meaning of the month of Ramadan.
It would appear that this inability to realise the meaning and significance of Ramadan also afflict some UMNO leaders, like Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department and MP for Muar, Datuk Razali Ibrahim who could defend such thuggish, violent, extremist behaviour like the roughing up of an MP going about his duties.
