2019 should be a good year for Orang Asli in Malaysia as it opened with another New Malaysia landmark when the Attorney-General Tommy Thomas made history with the Federal Government acting on behalf of the Temiar Orang Asli to file a civil suit against the Kelantan State Government and its agencies to prevent the destruction of native land for commercial profit.

Has former Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Razak, crossed the Rubicon on the 1MDB scandal without realising it?
Until today, Najib has maintained a very consistent stand that there is nothing basically wrong with 1MDB which could not be put right, but with the apology to the people of Malaysia by Goldman Sachs chief executive officer David Solomon who said Malaysia was defrauded by numerous individuals, including the highest members of the prior government, Najib has changed his tune.

Former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak must be at his most contented and satisfied self since unexpectedly lost power as Malaysia’s sixth Prime Minister in the 14th General Election on May 9, 2018 – which he had expected Barisan Nasional to win easily, even to recapture two-thirds parliamentary majority which BN lost ten year ago.
This was why he asked why I am so obsessed with him as to repeatedly issue statements on him even though he is no longer the Prime Minister or UMNO President.
He posted photographs on his Facebook and said he was in Cameron Highlands “just to buy strawberries”.

The Cameron Highlands by-election is a sign of a new Malaysia where firstly, there is restoration of the rule of law and secondly, there are heroes who are prepared to come forward to expose money politics and corruption.
There would be no Cameron Highlands by-election if there is no change of Federal Government in the 14th General Electionto build a new Malaysia to restore the rule of law and the doctrine of separation of powers among the Executive, Parliament and the Judiciary.
More important, there were people’s heroes who were prepared to come forward to expose money politics and corruption, taking the case all the way as witnesses in the High Court of Kuala Lumpur, resulting in the Election Court declaring on Nov. 30 last year that the MIC National Vice President, C. Sivaraajh’s election as Member of Parliament of Cameron Highlands in the 14th General Election on May 9, 2018 was null and avoid because it was tainted by corrupt election practices of vote-buying. Can the Pakatan Harapan candidate, M. Manogaran, win against the Barisan Nasional’s candidate, former top police officer and the first Orang Asli parliamentary candidate in Barisan Nasional history, Ramli Mohd Nor in the Cameron Highlands by-election on January 26?
It will be very difficult and uphill. A Pakatan Harapan victory in Cameron Highlands by-election on January 26 is not impossible and will make even greater history than the unexpected Pakatan Harapan win in the 14GE on May 9, 2018.
The 14th General Election result on May 9, 2018 created history for Malaysia and the world. The overwhelming majority of Malaysians had not expected Pakatan Harapan to win that night, although they had “hoped against hope” for a victory which they had not dared to believe would happen.
I myself had not expected a peaceful and democratic transition of power in Putrajaya from UMNO/Barisan Nasional to Pakatan Harapan, although I had hoped for such a peaceful and democratic transition of power for over five decades. Read the rest of this entry »

I have a confession to make – I never expected the condition of the Orang Asli in the country in so many Orang Asli kampongs that I have visited in the past two weeks to be so dire, primitive and atrocious that all Malaysians must feel both shocked and ashamed that we have Malaysians in 2019 living in conditions denied of the most basic of fundamental human rights – no proper roads, no basic infrastructure facilities like clean water and electricity; poor education and medical services, lack of proper housing and job opportunities; and most important of all, the long-standing denial of the land rights of the Orang Asli.

Dare the Barisan Nasional candidate for Cameron Highlands, Ramli Mohd Nor admit that the report card for the 60-year-old Barisan Nasional programme to uplift the 200,000 Orang Aslis in Malaysia is a big “F”?
During my visits to the many Orang Asli posts and kampongs in Cameron Highlands, I was shocked to see the atrocious conditions of the Orang Asli community, where in many cases there is no proper roads or basic infrastructure of clean water and electricity, housing, the basic facilities of education and health, and most important of all, the long-standing denial of the land rights of the Orang Asli which are under the jurisdiction of the state governments.
I just cannot imagine how a caring Government could leave the Orang Asli community in such a shocking plight, not for one, five or ten years but for over 60 years. Read the rest of this entry »

I just came from Kampong Orang Asli Janggap in Pos Sinderut and I find the road access to it among the worst I have travelled to Orang Asli kampongs in Cameron Highlands in the past fortnight.
I understand that former Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Razak will be arriving in Cameron Highlands to help the Barisan Nasional’s Cameron Highlands by-election campaign.
As he will be here for four days from Thursday to Sunday, I hope he will travel the worst “roti canai” roads and non-roads to the remote Orang Asli kampongs to see for himself how as the sixth Prime Minister, he has failed the Orang Aslis in Camerons Highland and the country to provide the most basic of infrastructures.

The alteration of former Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s campaign schedule for Barisan Nasional in the Cameron Highlands by-election from a two-day stint to a four-day programme is an indication of two things:
· firstly, the supreme confidence of Barisan Nasional that it could easily win the Cameron Highlands by-election with a huge margin after the strategic nomination of the first Orang Asli parliamentary candidate by Barisan Nasional, Ramli Mohd Nor, a former top police officer; and
· secondly, the intensification of the scheme to use the Cameron Highlands by-election to plot Najib’s political come-back and even return as Prime Minister in the 15th General Election to legitimise his kleptocratic premiership and 1MDB scandal and other 1MDB-like corruption scandals in FELDA, Felcra, MARA and Tabung Haji.

Is it to ensure a new culture of integrity and zero tolerance for corruption in Malaysia or is it to frustrate such an effort?
One must admire Najib’s impudence and temerity for trying to use RM20 “petrol money” for Orang Asli to whitewash his RM50 billion 1MDB corruption and money-laundering scandal and kleptocratic premiership, but faced with 39 criminal charges (undoubtedly with more criminal charges to come) and accused of siphoning off billions from 1MDB, what has Najib got to lose in adopting the most bizarre diversionary tactics?

Why such thunderous silence from Ramli and BN to the challenge to make Cameron Highlands by-election the cleanest in nation’s history?
Before the advent of Internet, electronic and social media, the normal reaction time to political challenges worldwide is one day as 24 hours is given to allow the original challenge to appear on the printed media the next day.
Electronic and social media has destroyed the 24-hour rule, as in the age of modern communication, information travels at the speed of light, making it possible to know what is happening almost instantaneously all over the world.
I believe my statement challenging the Barisan Nasional candidate for Cameron Highlands by-election, Ramli Mohd Nor to make the Cameron Highlands by-election the cleanest in nation’s history with the Barisan Nasional and Pakantan Harapan candidates making daily declarations of their by-election expenditures and invitation to Election Commission and NGOs to monitor their daily campaigns would have been known to Ramli six hours ago.
My statement was issued at 9.57 a.m, and although it was reported by Malay Mail Online shortly after 11 am and fully reproduced by Malaysiakini at 12.13 pm, Barisan Nasional mass media communications network would have informed Ramli of my statement shortly after 10 am. A culture of dependency has been entrenched among the FELDA settlers and it is stunting development within the community
FELDA settlers were never given any training on financial literacy but yet they are expected to be able to understand the seriousness of undertaking huge loans and large irregular sum of payment and that they are obligated to repay the same with interest.
This policy of easy loan giving by the previous Barisan Nasional regime was intentional and had brought the settlers a lifetime of crushing debt that will get passed upon their next generation, thus creating dependency on the government indefinitely.
This is one of the main reason why it was so hard for the Pakatan Harapan campaigners to enter FELDA settlements during previous elections the last time, to campaign for their candidates. The settlers were in fear of their livelihood, that their living allowance might be jeopardised and revoked for allowing Pakatan campaigners to come into their villages.
Granted, there are a few instances where FELDA settlers are blessed with huge sums of money either from the listing of FELDA Global Venture Berhad (FGV) or the occasional high rally in commodity prices. But with low financial literacy, a significant number FELDA settlers end up not managing their finances properly, spending most of the windfall earned with no awareness for rainy days.” Read the rest of this entry »

Barisan Nasional candidate for Cameron Highlands by-election, Ramli Mohd Nor said yesterday that if he wins the by-election, it will not be based on bribery.
This is a most welcome statement by the Barisan Nasional candidate and I applaud him for it, for there is a very deliberate and systematic attempt to divert attention as to why the election of MIC Vice President, C. Sivaraajh as MP for Cameron Highlands in the 14th General Election on May 9, 2018 was declared null and void, resulting in the holding a by-election; and in particular the significant role of the Pahang Mentri Besar and State Assemblyman for Jelai, Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail in the money-politics, vote-buying and corrupt election practices during the last general election, which were highlighted in the election court appeal and which Wan Rosdy dared not become a witness to rebut although the election court proceedings were adjourned three times for Wan Rosdy to testify.
Actually the money politics, vote-buying and corrupt election practices in the 14th General Election were not confined to Cameron Highlands, but was fairly routine for most Barisan Nasional campaigns.
The difference was that Cameron Highlands produced 12 “integrity heroes” – eleven of them Orang Asli – who were prepared to testify in open court about the Barisan Nasional’s money politics, vote-buying and corrupt election practices in Cameron Highlands during the last general election! I also call on all competing political parties and candidates to co-operate to make the Cameron Highlands by-election the cleanest election in Malaysian history by making an instant full disclosure of the electoral expenditures when questioned.
Then the voters of Cameron Highlands would have made great history in Malaysia.

Cronyism has stunted FELDA’s growth potential
FELDA settlers has been neglected for decades under the previous Barisan government who exploited them as a mere vote bank.
First generation FELDA settlers, who are mainly rural poor, sent to develop land around the countryside into cash crop plantation were never given any other training besides from being a farmer.
This is reminiscent of the British Colonial Administration policy of keeping the Malay farmers as farmers and only giving their children education to become a better farmers instead of diversifying their talent pool. Read the rest of this entry »

Former Prime Minister, Datuki Seri Najib Razak is trying to legitimise his “global kleptocracy” and the 1MDB scandal with a political comeback through a Barisan Nasional victory in the Cameron Highlands by-election.
This is obvious by two events.
Firstly, his “meet-the-supporters” session in Lembah Pantai, Kuala Lumpur yesterday where he was introduced as “a Prime Minister on vacation”; and secondly, the appearance of his eldest son, Nizar Najib, on the Barisan Nasional campaign trail of in the Cameron Highlands by-election. Although Nizar did not speak, he was introduced as one of the VIPs at an event at Pos Mensun, the hometown of the BN’s Cameron Highlands candidate Ramli Mohd Nor.

PKR Senator Bob Monolan Mohd has kicked up a controversy with his statement in Pos Betau, Jelai yesterday which had been interpreted as a warning to Orang Asli village chiefs (Tok Batin) that their salaries and posts are at stake if they do not support Pakatan Harapan in the Cameron Highlands by-election.
If Monolan had threatened Tok Batins, then he would have committed an election offence which is actionable under the law, but otherwise, if he had merely wanted to point out that that it was unacceptable for Tok Batins to receive their salaries from the Federal Government and continue to be local UMNO heads.

Pakatan Harapan will fulfil its promise to fully develop human capital among FELDA settlers, both for the current and the future generation
FELDA was created as a government program intended to give the rural poor a fresh start in their life. The program worked really well in its early years, providing settlers land to farm and live on while creating communities in new frontiers.
Mismanagement and lack of forward-looking planning lead to the decline of FELDA settlements, previous Barisan government failures in ensuring FELDA settlements are equipped with proper infrastructure has resulted in broken communities within the settlements. Without decent infrastructure such as paved roads, well-equipped schools, and commercial centres, it has proven hard for the settlers to diversify their communities beyond agriculture. This situation has restricted career opportunities for the second generation of FELDA settlers, causing a majority of them to move out of their communities into bigger cities in search of better employment. I spent the whole morning today visiting the ninth Orang Asli Post in Cameron Highlands (Pos Terisu) and the four Orang Asli kampongs in the area.
This marks the end of my pre-by-election visit to all the nine Orang Asli Posts in Cameron Highlands in my three visits to the constituency from December 30, which included being trapped at Kampong Orang Asli Semoi Lama on New Year’s Eve together with MP for Bentong Wong Tack, State Assemblyman for Tanah Rata Chiong Yoke Kong, DAP/Pakatan Harapan Candidate for Cameron Highlands M. Manogaram, cutting from all access to the outside world; crossing the river at Kampong Semoi Lama by driving through it despite its strong currents to reach Orang Asli kampongs in Pos Lenyang and Pos Titom, and I would have ended up in Lipis if my vehicle was swept away by the strong current; as well as my visits to Felda Sungai Koyan and the townships at Bertam Valley, Ringlet, Tanah Rata, Brinchang, Tringkap and Kampong Raja.

The Cameron Highlands by-election is the curtain-raiser for the great battle for Pahang state power in the next general election in four years’ time
The people of Malaysia created two historic events last year.
First, the historic decision of the fourteen general election of May 9, 2018 when they voted out Datuk Sri Najib Razak as the Prime Minister of Malaysia and ejected UMNO/Barisan Nasional as the Federal Government of Malaysia, replacing it with Pakatan Harapan comprising DAP, PKR, Amanah and Bersatu and making Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad as the Prime Minister for the second time, at the age of 93.
Second, history was also made on 30th November 2018 following the heroic testimony of Orang Asli witnesses when the Election Court in Kuala Lumpur declared the Cameron Highlands election of MIC Vice President C.Sivarraajh as MP null and void because of corrupt election practices and money politics.
