Kelana Jaya rally: 10,000 people at noon
Malaysiakini Team | Jul 6, 08 10:08am

There is a carnival sort of atmosphere at the Kelana Jaya stadium this morning at the day-long anti-fuel hike rally.

People started trickling into the 50,000 capacity stadium since early morning, to be greeted by vendors selling Pakatan Rakyat party mementos, T-shirts, cassettes and posters.

About 17 stalls had set up business since yesterday with traders reporting brisk business.

The rally is organised by the Coalition Against Inflation (Protes).

Protes coordinator Dr Hatta Ramli told Malaysiakini yesterday that the programme, which would see musical and artistic performances in between political speeches, would start at 10am until midnight.

When the rally kicked off at 10am, about 5,000 people have arrived at the stadium with more on their way. Most of them are in red T-shirts, turning the grandstand into a sea of red.

By noon, the organisers said that the crowd had risen to about 10,000.

About 2,500 volunteers from both PAS and PKR Youth wing have been placed to handle the crowd.

Hatta, who is PAS Kuala Krai parliamentarian, was the first speaker, followed by Hindraf coordinator S Jayathas, DAP Selangor executive councillor Ronnie Liu and PKR’s Irene Fernandez.

According to programme schedule released by Hatta this morning, representatives from rights movements Jerit and Hindraf are scheduled to give speeches at 12 noon.

At 2pm, representative of NGOs and Pakatan parties would have their say.

Pakatan members of parliament and state representatives would be making their appearance at 3pm, and at 5pm a number of Pakatan mentri besar and chief minister are expected to be at the stadium.

The Pakatan bigwigs are scheduled to appear before the crowd at 9pm with PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim being the star of the show.

Police and military ‘intimidation’

Meanwhile, the nearby Kelana Jaya LRT station is busy with many protestors using the public transport to get to the stadium.

At the station, a small band of uniformed police personnel have been stationed to monitor the crowd.

So far, there is no police presence outside the stadium, although policemen have been put on standby in case of any untoward incident.

There are also two mobile police stations at the stadium.

It is learnt that Selangor police chief Khalid Abu Bakar is at the district police headquarters, keeping abreast of developments.

Vendors at the stadium told Malaysiakini that late last night they saw several police patrol cars and about seven military trucks in the area, but the convoy did not stop at the stadium.

In addition to the palpable police and military intimidation, organisers have to fight off persistent rumours that event would be cancelled.

“Any contrary information that is being disseminated whether by SMS or email are patently false and misleading and are meant to confuse the public.” said a statement from Protes.

“The planned programme will not be cancelled under any circumstances to ensure that the people are able to express their dissatisfaction at the government’s decision to drastically increase the price of petrol and other fuels without strong and reasonable justification.”

Polis always have sedition Act for this kind of occasion.. maybe they are waiting for DSAI to give his speech first then the action starts..

Nothing much can be said regarding PAS, they have their principle, we must respect that too. BN will politicizes any compromise of PAS’s policies. Just give them a break, sure they will come around soon. The next generation of their leaders will be more liberal.. in the context of entertainment.

Anyone know what time DSAI going to make his speech? Heard the crowd is building up.. sad unable to join my buddies there. Saw the crowd from my phone(video call)… must be electrifying atmosphere there..

Hope it would stay that way.. without any intimidation from our Blue dress triad members. Red dress rules for now..

Second Finance Minister Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop today ticked off the Penang state government for being too obsessive in building the monorail system and Penang Outer Ring Road projects.

Nor Mohamed said the state goverment ought to focus on improving the economy instead of wanting to go-ahead with such mega projects.

“They are just too obsessive with it.

“The federal government has other responsibilities to take care of and that is why it decided to defer the two projects now.

“Maybe the state government like to think otherwise,” he said.

    ————–
“Maybe Nor likes to think otehrwise”, not-so-stupid rakyat said.

This man messed up in the past – Malaysia lost billions in the currency speculation during his time and those losses could have been used to build the 2 mega projects.
He ought to go in next shakeup if we are going to have any hope.

This government has never been listening to the people. In these times of economic crisis worldwide we do not have the time for these “re-wind” of false accusations against DSAI.

Creating IPCMC is the right move. Restoring judicial independence is the right move. Making ACA independent is the right move. But looks like it’s all just fake moves.

Down with oppression! Long live Malaysia!

If we could put judge Dato Sri Ram as AG, some sincere police officer ( i can’t think of one yet!) as IGP or at least put them in IPCMC then we can talk about restoring judicial independence.
From what transpire now, the present government can’t do much as doing so will be like digging owns grave.. They have too much to hide and as long they have their DOGs running the departments, they are safe.

When will the Malays and Muslim in Selangor open their eyes and ears.Don,t they read the STAR news paper. There was even a picture of the main player who is from UMNO smilling with pigs around him taken in Germany
When the UMNO LED BN Goverment started this project way back in 2004 ,It was done in a cloke and dagger manner. For doing nothing this UMNO guy wanted to charge RM50 for each pig coming out from this farming area.
Khir toyol had given the green light for this project in 2006.For just RM50 a pig this UMNO guy will be making close to RM6000 a day.
The best part is, now that PR control the state this same guy was the one who organize a demo with UMNO members againts the project.

People in another country demonstrate all the time. You don’t find them being ashamed. You will feel ashamed later if you don’t do anything now and just let Malaysia rots.

  40. #40 by Godfather on Sunday, 6 July 2008 - 11:18 pm

Badawi is, as usual, talking nonsense.

There are three persons that I know of who have written about the nonsensical political bickering – Marina Mahathir, Rocky Bru and Wong Chun Wai. These are the people with vested interests who have written accordingly in their daily columns. However, as Jeffrey QC pointed out in a separate thread, these people have completely missed the point. The point is not the political bickering – it’s the people’s welfare that we are concerned about.

The rally could be on the fuel price hike, but it could easily have been a rally for the transparency and integrity of the justice system. Whatever happened to the promises under the judicial reform commission ? Whatever happened to the IPCMC ? Is anyone in government concerned about the implications of the Balasubramaniam SDs as it relates to police interference ?

Is this country safe ? Are all men really equal before the law ?

  41. #41 by yog7948 on Sunday, 6 July 2008 - 11:19 pm

HE was under “duress” for TWO months before signing SD1, so under “duress” at the PC that he was in jovial mode, joking and shaking hands with all.. That is what BN government’s understanding of “duress”.

For SD2, he signed less than 24 HOUR after having “clear state of mind” visiting his “friendly” police buddies.

    what a joke..

I think this note may backfire! A more serious response may come from Washington to teach the government a lesson.

KUALA LUMPUR: The United States has yet to respond to Malaysia’s protest note for meddling in its affairs by commenting on the sodomy allegation faced by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim said more time should be accorded to Washington to respond, as he had only sent the letter last Friday.

“Maybe we won’t get a response from them, but the important thing is that we have noted our displeasure.

“Are all men really equal before the law” Godfather

They are not even equal when they are born! Most have ten fingers, some less, some has extra and some with their fingers missing.

Freedom is another matter. When writing about the “The Social Contract” a famous French philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau wrote ‘Man is born free, and everywhere he is in chains’.

“It has become manifest that the Rule of Law has collapsed in Malaysia.

Even if Anwar Ibrahim were to be found guilty of sodomy, the court of public opinion would have acquitted him. Even if the Deputy Prime Minister were shown to be wholly unconnected with the events underlying the Altantuya murder trial, that court would have already found otherwise. It would not matter if all the police officers, prosecutors and judges in the country were to say otherwise or if all the untruths, one way or the other, were undone. Malaysians, or at least a very large number of them, have lost faith in the system.”

Maybe I have put it wrongly. What I said was that BEFORE the picture was taken, this Judge said that he would be behind Dr Mahathir and he promptly placed himself behind the seated Prime Minister when the picture was taken.

Please also remember that he was the counsel for Umno when the Umno 11 filed a case against Umno. If you remember, the original Umno was deregistered.

Then Tunku stepped in to Umno 46, but Dr Mahatir, as incumbent PM, used his position, to form Umno Baru.

What was our Dato Ram doing representing Umno? Was there a game plan in place to declare Umno unlawful, form a lnew Umno so that only their people could get in – leaving out the dissident led by Tengku Razaleigh and Tunku and even Hussein Onn?

So, my friend, be careful. They walk like a duck, they sound like a duck, but they may n ot be the duck that they say they are!

They are volves in sheep’s clothing.

But this country’s psychological psyche has been traumatized beyond all help. I am afraid we are already a failed nation, with the leaders operating Malaysia as areal state and a spare state. Deep actions will be taken.

    Dear YB,
I noted your determinations and your endurances all this while.

Indeed I was respectful of your ability to stand up all those humiliations and those injustices they had bullied and jailed you, despite you are amongst all those titled senior malaysians who should be titled better than Tan Sri/Dato seri, and the titles they gave to DAP politicians are none, though the rulers are aware of their lack of information about how to confer you and your son the right titles, and most probably you both will decline gently!

I was wishing you as a grandpa, and as a kind father who led your son to be a CM, and you must be grateful to DSAI, and also the Pak Lah’s flip flop administrations, and then you are owing TDM a big favour as he forced you to be strong and jailed dad and son in Kamunting to enable your HERO image is with your CM son forever!!

Just as I was concerned about any good image we could have now is near zero, and who cares about malaysia indeed!!

Malaysia is rich with blessings from God as we have great resources oil, palm oil, and most important TALENTS like you and us, we had been contributing the greatest exports of talents in the world, and more than half of the senior maangers in Singapore were from Malaysia!!!

But I wish you could now safely step down, and leave your ideals to Tony Pua, and this fine young man will help your son well.

I ntoiced many businessmen are trying to get close to you, but remember to patronize the Hokkein Mee where you were always alone before 8/3/2008, and perhpas, you could bring more client to this heng Kee, and he was the hawker whom had fed you with good Hokkien mee when you are alone having dinner, of course with a CM son, you could affford air conditioned restaurant, if you are not coming to heng Kee for your Hokkien Mee, he would be retiring soon!!!

Do not go for Sotong mi ( Sodomi), just ask for Heng Kee Hokkien Mee!!

But I am glad you will be in the History Book of my grandchildren, i will be really glad once if your name appeared in the textbook to share with my grandchildren that i did know you while I had my Hokkien mee in heng Kee of a restuarant opposite the former RUBY theatre in Seapark!!

    Best of luck,

Are we are surprised by the developments of present times? It is predicted that there will be terrible times in the end of age. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasful, proud, abusive, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, slanderous, without self control, brutal, not lovers of good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasures rather than lovers of God – looks religious but lacks its discipline. How did it ended that that way? Where are those rockers singers from? Don’t we feel insulted?

I am disappointed, to say the least.

I still think DAP and PAS have very much better displine and organisation. Whatever the outcome of that rally, I still support DAP.

For someone who managed to look, sound, and act stupid to fool the almighty Tun M into believing he is harmless and can be controlled, that Badawi surely deserves a salute. Such a man must be watch very carefully as he is indeed the ‘still water runs deep’ type of guy. We all underestimated that cunny fox!
My vote now is that he would still be in power for some time to come and it’s going to take more than mere good speeches and SD with counter SD to remove that Badawi.

Opposition got no brain. When the government said the demonstration must be held in a confined area, the opposition agreed. That was stupid. That was not demonstration. That was a rock concert. When we demonstrate, we must be able to walk the streets of KL. That is demonstration. IN fact, the government doesn’t mind you fellows organising a few more. SEE how many can you fellows attend. Oppositions have no brain, no strategists. Soon they will let you have another one in Bukit Jalil. NO problem. Wake up lah you fellows.

i agree with limkamput. I dont see the effect of yesterday’s rally. Everyone was having a jolly good time. These ppl might as well hope for more hikes in the future becos govt raise fuel prices, opposition throws them a party.

Instead of joining the rally, i went for my futsal instead. And i bet ya no one in my team dropped their pants.

There are effects, to be sure. But were they positive?

Years ago when I was in local campus, we organised the new “Mahasiswa Dynamik” campaign to remove the established groups that had led the student unions for years. We removed them in UKM, UPM, MU, UTM… but found that Mahasiswa Dynamik was a total failure.

We are looking at Malaysia, not just a campus. Can’t the PR come out with something better?

  69. #69 by rainbowseahorse on Monday, 7 July 2008 - 10:15 am

As I said, Badawi is not as he appears to be..which is to look, sound, and act stupid. By allowing, without permitting, an organized opposition “protest” which turns into a carnival, he is giving plenty of ropes for the opposition to hang themselves.
That “pants pulling down” incident could very easily had turned into a nasty situation which will, of course, be blamed entirely on the opposition.

    So who won that round?

I don’t want to be a party pooper but I would like to voice a cautious view about this protest. Protesting against fuel price increase is the LEAST DIRECTLY RATIONAL of all public complain and yet its the biggest rally we have had so far.

My concern is what if there is a war in Iran (an attack by Israel most likely) and oil price hit stratospheric level?

This protest will give the BN govt an excuse to impose emergency law and purge the opposition. It will be the end of reform in this country and all that has been hard fought in the last few years.

Anwar is a political opportunist too much so and is a means to an end but he does not have a full-game plan for especially for such extreme but possible scenarios.

Frankly, its time to move on to debate the real issue which is reform of govt.

  73. #73 by rainbowseahorse on Monday, 7 July 2008 - 11:58 am

My main contention here is that, with so many opportunities given, and some even handed on a platter, to the opposition leaders to capitalize on forming the new government, yet they seem to be getting nowhere.
Yes, Godfather, patience is indeed a virtue, but opportunities just don’t wait around for anybody. So far I have not seen any ‘sparkle’ of inspirational leadership from any opposition leaders to warrant my optimism for a change in government any day soon.

Is Pak Lah crazy or what? demanding increase in Federal Budget, but cutting Penang state budget by RM 4.7 billion, that’s 80% from the previous budget allocated to Penang for development.

Is this man crazy? i hope 10K penangites will slap his bloody face.

  76. #76 by Godfather on Monday, 7 July 2008 - 12:12 pm

“Getting nowhere” or “getting somewhere” are subjective concepts. The fuel hike has yet to take its full course in everyday life in Bolehland, and its effect is yet to be completely felt and understood.

What is clear is that the BN thieves are very adept at shooting themselves in the foot, and the next rise in fuel prices will almost certainly lead to the demise of the federal government. It won’t be long – the current level of subsidies is still way too high to be sustainable at current global oil prices, and I expect that there will be a new round of hikes in September.

The next round of fuel hikes will also lead to the type of demonstrations that many want – instead of having parties in stadiums, people will take to the streets in increasing numbers.

Political bickering some smart alec said.

So its all nothing more than bickering merely?

I am not pronoucing NR guilty. I cant. That is for the court to do. So let the court do it. The court must do it. For this to happen, first, the police must do their job. Investigate.

What RPK said in SD is really serious stuff and it must be investigated on thoroughly.

    Bala’s SD echoed RPK’s words.

That makes the whole matter more urgent.

And Bala’s retraction of his SD after questioning by the police gives the whole issue a foul smell.

Look. It is about a life that has been sacrificed.

Its body has been shattered, presumably so that its soul would not return in a complete form and hence can do no harm.

Assuming (just an assumption, I could be wrong) NR is involved somehow, then he has to face the music.

More than that, he can no longer be a political leader.

If sodomy is such a great issue (that anwar should be damned for it, assuming he really did sodomise someone), then acts that led directly or indirectly to the death of someone must be a greater issue.

Let us not downplay the issue to mere bickering.

    Its a very serious matter.

Opp. needs to put forward a new de facto leader as a credible PM for PR.

Cant comment on DSAI’s sodomy cases, but the fact is being ex-UMNO/DPM, there is too much against him, more will be hurled at him & some rakyat still have doubts about DSAI, all of which will be a drag to PR as a whole. Notwithstanding that, DSAI is equally important for PR to win, but he is better of playing kingmaker/strategist than PM to be, for the sake of PR, for the sake of rakyat.

I think you are talking cock, not us. If we did nothing, we still have every right to be here to give our comments. So what you have thousands of people there? What impact have you got? If we want to send our message peacefully as you said, then do it in the Parliament or State Assemblies. Demonstrations and marches must serve their purpose, i.e. to demonstrate and to march. It is to create attention and to exert pressure. So you think you have done great stuff because you were there? We can’t even get our focus right? Is it a political rally or is it a buttock showing concert? Who is in charge? If they can’t control a political rally, do you think they can control a government? Is it a political rally or is an avenue to sell some t-shirts or ice-cream? Honestly, if this is what the oppositions got, the government does not mind you have one every month – in Bukit Jalil, Shah Alam Stadium, etc, no problem. It is just like watching football matches.

Najib yesterday said oil protest a failure – did not achieve 1 million target. So Najib, with all the police/military threats issued pre-protest, you now say “a failure”?

Listen people, this clearly tells the people all pre-protests threats are meant to keep people away, to instil fear into people so that they stay away, and in the aftermath, it gives Najib and company the opportunity to say that the protest was “a failure”.

What this tells the rakyat is obvious isn’t it? Any future protests, the govt no longer has the confidence to enforce threats of water/chemical cannons, etc, onto rakyat.

Malaysia is now in the forefront in international news, and non-constitutional handling of protesters will further cast the Barisan govt in more negative perspective in foreign eyes.

Definitely a change in the govt policy on “illegal” assemblies! Move on PR, the BN govt is “on hold”!

attire play a very important roles in lauching the mass rally so that there are no visibled attires which the police or the army can spots the difference and to identified the protestor therefore it is not necessary to wear colour code attires to prevent from be spotted . Let the number be the force to protest and not the colour code at this hour we need to launch a very serious major event that can tell bodohwi another chapter about angry nation towards higher living cost from the recent petrol hike exercise.

and towards the PM or DPM position let the nation votes them out on GE13 and i belief that BN will be totally wiped off on the next round.

Quite probable AAB using NR as a sacrificial pawn to lock horns with DSAI. Why AAB & KJ not taking legal action against RPK’s SD that AAB & KJ are withholding evidence? AAB for sure would like to see KJ become PM one day to fulfill the family’s programs. Also, our usual loudmouth KJ has been quiet like mouse lately. Scheming something? Malaysia is going through darkest & dangerous times.

If AAB serious about listening & helping the rakyat, where the fuel-price hike is concerned, just have to abolish all tolls & private owned road-tax (but not insurance) for cars below 2000cc (petrol) & 2500cc (diesel) immediately. Bigger capacity cars consume more fuel, thus, if that’s the case, they should pay more for the ‘luxury’. Why wait for 2months to come out with report on Toll? It should be done in 1 week. Is it that difficult to realize the problem? Then our government is blind with all the $ from corruption.

The government made a decision to increase the fuel price overnight but need 2 months to study the after effects. Wow, how brilliant. We have geniuses in the cabinet. It is also not clear how the savings of RM 50B will benefit the rakyat. How will these RM 50B saved will be generated back into the economy? Wouldn’t be the same if it were in the hands of the rakyat? But rather, the government has taken it from our hands by controlling what we should do with it, for their personal benefit.

  121. #121 by shortie kiasu on Tuesday, 8 July 2008 - 2:31 pm

Why are we still harping on the price hike of oil? Whether there was any mismanagement of Petronas fund in the past or not, it is bygone and we should not keep ‘crying over the spilled milk’ if ever there was, and move forward.

At least right now, it is fact, the crude oil price have touched US$150 per barrel, as compared to US$40 per barrel not too long ago.

There is no purpose to demonstarte or protest in public about the hike, every one knows.

Move on and find ways to adapt to the new reality. There is no two ways about it.

What is the solutions by demonstrating and protesting? The price of oil won’t come down, the price of crude won’t come down.

The price of crude oil is expected to move further up. All should wake up to the new reality and stop day dreaming that manna will drop from the sky. If you do NOT sweat it out, you will NOT get to enjoy the fruit of labour of others.

All these huha are chasing the foreign investors away, no tourists will want to come to visit the country. Your hospitality industry will go bust sooner and later. Who will suffer the most as result of these so called protestors? They themselves and the poor.

    shortie kiasu:

So you suggest that we all sweat it out, and let the thieves get away with dipping their hands in the public coffers ?

With every dollar increase in oil price, Petronas makes additional millions, so what do you suggest that we do with the money ?

    Greetings!

Seriously, whether the protest results in return or not is not so important. For those who have missed the carnival, they wouldn’t know the real feeling of the crowds. They’re from different race and place but they walk to each others. This is a sign of unity as a true Malaysian.

Of course we can’t stop the global oil price increased but neither yours whose only talk cock here. (The PR wanted to wake up those who’re still sleeping)

Furthermore, it’s very sad that Malaysian nowadays don’t even have the freedom to talk. What other you can expects from the current government to improve the education, economy and other from their colony microstructure & management.

    YB,

Today I read in the Sun papers quoting The Second Finance Minister Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop in saying ” Petronas does not monopolised the natural gas for vehicles industry. It is teh other petrol comnpanies which are not keen to enter this field because the price is controlled at 68 cts per litre while the market price is RM 3.11″

    1. Let me tell The 2nd Finance Minister that he do not know the price of NGV now. It is at about RM 1.10 in the world market today and not RM 3.11.

    2. He never tell you that Petronas collect royalty on behalf of the goverment which is not right. What they make as profit is not profit but royalty. They have no right to spend it. It belongs to the rakyat.

    3. We are one of the large Natural gas producer in the world. We export most of our natural gas so other countries can enjoy the cheaper gas for use and build up their industries using cheaper fuel alternative while we Malaysian have none or not enought for own use.

    4. On NGV and biodiesel for cars, even a non oil producing country like Thailand is well ahead of us. They have much much more NGV filling station that us and Gasohol which is the alternative to bio fuel for vehicle. Are we sleeping or are we not telling the truth to the rakyat ?.

No wonder the rakyat protest. Petronas is only keen to collect the taxes and feed the politician. They never invest in anything that benefit the rakyat. You think of what they have given u so far……………….. NOTHING

Why are we not embracing hybrid cars?
Why are there no encouragement to move that direction?
Its good for the environment. Isnt it?
They use less petrol. Dont they?
Or are they waiting for Proton and Perodua to produce their own working hybrid models?

PM and his good-for-nothing Cabinet members have been asking and reminding the people to cut down on unnecessary enpenditure after the fuel price hike and even got the cheek to propose allowing govt officers to do business in order to earn extra money to cover their higher cost of living. What kind of govt is this?! Where will their commitment to their work be?

And lo and behold, the 6th July 2008 issue of Mingguan Malaysia reported the Secretary General of the Domestic Trade and Industry as saying that the Govt is paying the COMMISSION amounting to RM500 million which should logically be paid by the multinational oil companies who have been making billions of dollars in profits, to petrol station dealers. Why should our taxpayers money be utilized to pay commission to these petrol station dealers?!!! This is utter mismanagement of our tax money. Hope YB Lim Kit Siang and your colleagues will bring this matter up in Parliament.
