Will Samy Vellu contest again in Sungei Siput?

Will the MIC President Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu contest again in the Sungei Siput parliamentary seat in the next general election which is around the corner?

The question seems to be a no-brainer as the answer appears to be indisputable “yes”.

The truth may not be that simple however.

Many would have no doubt that Samy Vellu would be returning to contest the parliamentary seat of Sungei Siput for the ninth time in the next general election, which he won for the first time in 1974.

There is however no doubt that Samy Vellu has become the lightning road of the long-suppressed anger and frustration of the Malaysian Indians over their long-standing political, economic, educational, social, cultural and religious marginalization in the country – as evidenced by the seething ferment demanding change among Malaysian Indians.

Samy Vellu is now the very personification to the Malaysian Indian community of everything that is wrong and unfair about Barisan Nasional policies in the past three decades which have reduced them into the new underclass in Malaysia.

Samy Vellu had compounded this offence in openly going against the struggle of the Malaysian Indians for a just and equal place under the Malaysian sun when he openly denied in India last week that Malaysian Indians are victims of long-standing marginalization.

This is not only untrue – but Samy Vellu knew that he was not speaking the truth!

In June 2004, I had handed Samy Vellu an official letter proposing the establishment of a Parliamentary Select Committee on the Marginalisation of the Malaysian Indians, asking him to take the issue to the Cabinet for approval and suggesting that he be the Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee.

At the time, Samy Vellu told me that it was a good proposal and that he would take it up to the Cabinet. I have not heard from him on the issue in the past three years and I do not know whether he had tabled the proposal in Cabinet and it got shot down or whether he never raised it in Cabinet at all.

What is most significant was that when I handed the letter and proposal to him – we were attending a meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Selection – he raised no objection whatsoever and even commended the proposal as a good one.

This could only meant that in June 2004, Samy Vellu admitted that the Malaysian Indians faced the problem of marginalization – which he is now going all over the world to deny.

This is sheer hypocrisy and explains why he has become the symbol of the rotten and opportunistic Malaysian Indian politics which is the object of scorn in the political awakening of the Malaysian Indians after the watershed Hindraf rally in Kuala Lumpur on Nov. 25 last year.

If Samy Vellu re-contests in Sungei Siput in the next general election expected within 65 days, again leading the MIC election campaign, MIC parliamentary and state assembly candidates throughout the country will face massive rejection by the Malaysian Indian voters.

Are MIC leaders trying to find a way to convey and convince Samy Vellu that the best service he can do to the MIC after being the MIC President and sole Malaysian Indian Minister for close to three decades is for him to fully absorb the anger and frustration of the Malaysian Indians at the MIC failure to check the marginalization of the Malaysian Indians by accepting full personal responsibility and not contesting in the next general election – thus saving the MIC slate of parliamentary and state assembly candidates from the full wrath of the Indian community in the polls?

Highly unlikely in view of the circumstances. He is not a unifying force anywhere.

Most likely he would be appointed senator and from there makes his way back to the Cabinet – following Ghazalie Shafie, Rafidah Aziz and Farid Ariffin and others before him.

A mockery of the process? A case of the political process having lost its integrity? Looks like.

Knowing what he is, I doubt it very much. YB Lim, this man you mention above is really thick-skin.

The only authority that can persuade him to go is UMNO. As we mentioned earlier, Samy was an asset, but now, using a financial term, has depreciated a lot. He is more of a liability. His visit to India placed UMNO in an uncomfortable position. What should have turn out as a positive publicity campaign resulted in a snub by the Taminaidu’s CM. It was a direct reponse to Nazri (UMNO)’s criticism.

On the other hand, we must separate the Malaysian of Indian descend from MIC. The Indians are not going to help UMNO. It is only MIC. That is the dilema of UMNO.

The third consideration is MIC itself. All of his men owe their MIC and government posts to Samy. I don’t see them turning away from Samy.

For these 4 reasons, I think he will contest (& win). But your question is “….in Sg Siput?” Yes, in Sg Siput.

The only creditable challenger that DAP has put so far was P.Patto…
If he is still around, definitely will beat the shit outta him. In the last GE, there was a majority of more than 4000 votes, so there needs a swing of about 2000 votes from those voting for BN to opposition. I think this time round if DAP or Keadilan is standing, there is a strong chance if the right candidate is offered.

According to the police reports filed, these 15 gangsters threatened “to chop those who opposed Samy Vellu”. Wonder if Samy Vellu interviewed and observed these Sungai Siput gangsters for his study? Wonder why they say things like “chop those who opposed Samy” as though to insinuate they are his men? Of course, this is all hearsay. Incidentally, the police did show up but took no action against the unruly chaps. How come? Apparently because they had not started chopping anyone yet, merely threatened to do so.

MIC president Samy Vellu was booed and publicly humiliated when he turned up to officiate at the Aattam 100 Vagai 3 (100 types of dance) performance at the Penang Internatikonal Sports Arena (Pisa) last night.

Sources tell me the crowd of 2,000-3,000 shouted obscenities at him including “po-dah” (the rude version of “get lost”) and he didnâ€™t get a chance to complete his speech. One source told me he was surprised to hear that the women in the audience appeared more aggressive in admonishing Samy.

Bear in mind, this was a cultural event and not a political forum, so it would have been attended by a diverse crowd of Indian Malaysians – who have now become politically awakened as never before.

This shows that even the indian in Penang are no longer behind him..Too much trouble created by him in the recent weeks and the indian today realise Sami is not a good leader to the Indian comunity..

In the wake of the murder of Tenggaroh State Assemblyman Datuk Krishnasamy Sithan, my condolence to his family and relatives for their loss. With this incident too, would this prevent Samy Vellu from contesting in Sungai Siput. This is the angle that I’m looking at why Samy Vellu may not contest for his constituency. From the Star publication, Samy Vellu mentioned that :

“MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said Krishnasamy had told him about the threats before he left for India two weeks ago.
â€œI just advised him to take care. That was the most I could say,â€ he said, adding that such threats were not unusual in politics. However, he could not confirm if the threats were linked to politics or business.
Samy Vellu said that he, too, received 10 to 15 such calls a day from people making all sorts of accusations and threats.”

Is it true that politicians often receive such an enormous number of threatening phone calls? Does Uncle Kit receive such phone calls often? If a politician’s focus is on helping people and serving the needs of the people, and if these duties are conducted in an ethical and honest manner, would he or she receive such life threatening phone calls?

It’s about time Samy Vellu quit politics and allow younger generations to chart out a greener pastures for the Indians.

Uncle Lim, your question of whether or not Samy Vellu will contest in Sungai Siput is multifaceted. Whats your take on your question? You still have not answered my question whether or not you envision of becoming the first non-Malay Prime Minister for Malaysia. Yes he will definately contest in Sg Siput. He talks bodly and if switches to other seats he thinks that he is a coward.

Sami thinks of his dignity and the power he has can still make him come out with outstanding colors in the GE. He will not give up. He will fight until the end – live or dead. If he runs to other area to contest then he knows the voters will through him off as not a responsible INDIAN MALAYSIA leader for the Indian community.

We know he cannot take our advice. He even dont listen to the GOD’s advice. He is the GOD and he is all.

But saying that above, his seat depends on the voters hand. Whatever political gimmick that is going to happen in this coming election predicted on 15th Mac 2008, he will have to go back to the position where he was before becoming a HERO of MIC. Thats the end of his game.

The issue is really can Samy Vellu get away with anything other than a convincing win in Sg. Siput?

The man may be in a battling mood but so are those who oppose him. They are not going to play his game. Nothing he does will change their minds and its a propaganda battle where their single one advantage is that the more Samy Vellu take risks, the more he can be critisized.

Take for example, the coming rally. Getting 15,000-20,000 people into a stadium is already criticised for being meaningless even before it began. Being snubbed in Tamilnadu is being billed as a shame.

The more he puts himself out there and don’t win, the more he looks like the problem rather the cause of the problem.

Will he run? Most likely because otherwise he just have to quit. I don’t think there is a middle ground for him unlike other BN component parties.

Whether Samy will contest or not depends entirely on KJ. If KJ feels that this [deleted] can be used again by UMNO, then he shall, but up until now, Samy has performed real well for UMNO, especially in India. He defended UMNO with his thick skin and even made a fool of himself in his own motherland, just to stick his head out for UMNO. So, I think he will be given a chance to contest in Sg Siput, and he would. However, UMNO may sacrifice him this time around and let him loose, and Samy cannot turn around and blame anyone for ditching him. It will be his “natural death” demise.

There are a number of permutations which I believe Abdullah Badawi needs to consider. Let Samy Vellu stand in Sg. Siput long his stronghold and win. He then retains his Cabinet position in the next government. Or persuade him not to stand but appoint him later as senator. If he were to stand and lose, Abdullah Badawi would be seen to make a mockery of the process. It does not mean, of course, that he would not do it but it’d be best to avoid being seen as abusing the political process – not that he had not done before!

On Jeff Ooi site, he is decribing his visit to Sabah with Jeffrey Sach. One of the thing to note is the poverty rate in Sabah. With Hindraf, the biggest dispute is whether Indians are worst off than Malays. UNDP statistics clearly show that poverty of bumiputeras is largely two area 1) in Sabah 2) pockets in Kelantan. The per capita income level of bumis are also clearly distorted by these factors. The government is very conveniently lumping together numbers that are convenient for them and ignoring facts when they are not.

“Will Samy Vellu contest again in Sungei Siput?” should be turned into a quetion like ‘Can Samy Vellu afford not to contest and retire from political life?’ or ‘Is he prepared to give up the President position of MIC?’.
My personal opinion is that he won’t give up the presidency of MIC because the stakes are too high for him to do so.Thus he is going for election and is going to be in Sungei Siput! The 4th floor boys can do nothing about it unless UMNO is prepared to give MIC the boot.

DAP MP Kulasegaran has hinted in his speech at a Ponggal harvesting festival yesterday in Port Klang that there is a crack in the relationship of the five Hindraf leaders arrested under Malaysian draconian Internal Security Act (ISA), without going in details. Also, he appealed to the media present not to report on this matter. But many in the crowed were whispering.
Apparently, four of the arrested — Ganabathirau, Vasanthakumar, Kenghadharan and Manoharan have turned against Uthayakumar accusing him of misappropriating the Hindraf funds collected from the public running to more than a million. It seems the four had made a police report.

Semi-Value is cunning and shrewed. He would have to go for it, but get beaten this time!

His boss in UMNO would do their best to garner for him the support of ‘all’ Malay voters; because he is their tool. Therefore, DAP must make sure to get all non-Malays to ‘vote’ any opposition, and get PKR and PAS to help get as many Malay votes as possible. This will definitely put him to rest.

To get the support of more Malays, it is very important (at least for the next 2 to 3 elections to come) the opposition front must be led by a predominantly Malay led party such as PKR or PAS. The Malays would not feel ‘safe’ to vote against BN/UMNO if the opposition is led by non-Malays. And UMNO will not heed the non-Malay opposition pressure and could easily paralyzed them with ISA (like the HINDRAF situation now). So, it is crucial that all non-Malays opposition parties should work hand-in-hand with Malay led opposition parties to topple the UMNO/BN front. This is the political realty in Malaysia – the result of the divide and rule strategy of UMNO for the past decades!

Could Uncle Lim become the first non-Malay PM? Surely he would like to, for the benefits of all Malaysian, but …….

Samy Velu will have no choice but to stand in Sg Siput to try to save his skin unless he can find a BN component party that is willing to exchange a constituency with him. He cannot afford not to stand because he knows UMNO will not appoint him as a senator and let him stay on as minister. UMNO needs an elected Indian MP as a puppet minister in the cabinet for window dressing and to justify its claim that BN policies have the support of the Indians as represented by the Indian minister. It was TDM who said that the reason he could not prosecute Samy Velu for corruption was because the Indians might start a riot, as Samy was the only Indian in the cabinet. Samy has managed to survive and holding on to his corrupt baggage for so long by riding on the back of the Indians. Once he falls from MIC his remaining usefulness to UMNO is to present him as a sacrificial bull to ACA for prosecution as a show case to cover their impotence.

I believe this time around the Opposition has a real chance to unseat Samy Velu in Sg. Siput. However, it will be an uphill battle against the might of the BN election machinery. Samy knows that he will be fighting for his life, he will use the financial and human resources of his ministry as his private asset for the election campaign.

The opposition will have no match for the BN in term of financial and human resources. However the GE wind is in favor of the opposition and the fact that Samy has become a rat running across the street. To have a fair chance to win the opposition must send a well know and credible Indian candidate. Smack Samy Velu, a rat in the year of rat!

Why should we bother where this incompetent traitor of Malaysian Indian stands? The Opposition should concetrate on strategies to defeat not only him but other rats like him in the coming GE by exposing all the rotten things they have done.
Writing in blogs alone is not enough because people at large especially the poor and down-trodden non-Malays should be made to understand what sort Barisan leaders they have been voting for.
The Opposition and their sympathisers cannot hold rallys/meetings because police will not issue permits. How to counter this? Election is round the corner. Time is short. Apart from forming workable alliances with other non-power crazy parties, the DAP should counter the propaganda campaign of the MIC, MCA and the Kerismudin youths.

I think we need to get it right. All the problems faced by Indian Malaysians are not entirely due to Samyâ€™s fault. We can have any other Indian leader heading the MIC, the problems will be still more or less the same. This is the nature of BN arrangement â€“ that non Malay parties are mere token. The same is with MCA. The only difference as I can see now is the Chinese are not as in dire straits as the Indians at the moment.

Why am I keeping hearing that Samy is so indispensable â€“ to be appointed Senator if he is not given a seat to contest or if he loses the election? Remember even Mahathir is dispensable. Honestly all the non Malay cabinet ministers can be dispensed with and nothing would happen. If Samy is no longer useful, what UMNO needs to do is to get another token. How difficult can that be? They are so many around. So it is rather odd to me to read the statement that â€œit is hard to imagine the next cabinet without Samyâ€. What pivotal role does Samy play in the Govt? Announcing the toll rates after UMNO has decided, or witnessing a concession signing agreement after PM has made the decision? I think we ought to remember how UMNO got rid of Neo Yee Pan in favour of Tan Koon Swan in the 1980s as a lesson

So long as UMNO still wants him, I think Samy is not in a hopeless situation. Sungei Siput is not Kuala Lumpur. One must not underestimate the politics at the grass root level and the power of money. I agree that his situation is less than perfect but he is not entirely hopeless, unless UMNO has chosen to dump him.

He will definitely stand in Sungei Siput because if he looses the election, it will give him an excuse to retire from politics and enjoy life to the fullest with his fortune. If he wins, he can claim that his constituency still support him but I think that he will enventually resign from the presidency of MIC and be a ordinary MP till his term expires and later enjoy the fruits of his labour.

I’m sorry if I have annoyed you with the stupidity of my observation, Sir.

However, what I meant was that assuming the UMNO leadership does not want to ‘do away’ with Samy Vellu because, say what we want he still has a following, and assuming that the UMNO leadership does not want to face the risk of seeing him loses the elections, there is another way out i.e. through his senate appointment. There is nothing to stop that.

Or he could be nominated to stand in a ‘safe’ seat. There is nothing to stop that too.

I cannot imagine the next government without him assuming the UMNO leadership is behind him.

If Samy contests in a place other than Sungei Siput, he would appear vindicating the allegation that he has failed the Malaysian Indian cause that makes him afraid of the 22.45% Indians there would all turn against him.

There’s no doubt that Hindraf’s episode has alienated many Malaysian Indians and slapped him in the face but how much of this alienation would be translated into withdrawal of support within Singei Siput, his traditional fortress, the last time around of which he won with a convincing 10,000 margin? Even if majority of Indian voters turn against him, he might not lose.The Sungai Siput parliamentary constituency has 46,779 Malays (31.5%), Chinese 41.5%, Indians 22.5% and orang asli 4.5%. With Malay support for BN Candidate, the issue is wouldn’t the Chinese (41.5%) there continue their traditional support for him, even if Indians are alienated? I read somewhere that the last time around the DAP candidate lost to the extent his deposit forfeited. If true, wouldn’t this be some kind of measure of where their votes would go again? Sungei Siput seems still a safer bet based on the ‘Devil you know’ principle.

Zack, of course the Malays would not want a Non Malay to be our PM. But never underestimate the power of intention. God has given us a powerful psyche to change things on earth. I’m referring to the injustice by this small Malay group thats marginalizing and discriminating the other races in Malaysia.

Since the General Election is held once at least once in 5 years, God willing, I may still witness about 8 General elections. Thats a time span of about 40 years. Don’t you think this is possible? Well, I believe it’s possible. It seems impossible because not many people have actually spoken publicly about it. If the opposition parties get together in the name of justice,equality and the betterness of the people, then it’s possible to elect a non-Malay PM in the future.

Finally Zack, I’m a dreamer, I dream the impossible dream, it’s in this dream that realities are born. If Martin Luther King Jr did not speak about the “I had a Dream” speech, perhaps Barack Obama ( an African American who is the front runner in the nomination for the Democratic party for the 2008 USA Presidential election ) would not be a major contender for the USA Presidential election this year.

It was reported recently that 10,000 roses would be delivered to PM Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi by the Indian community on February 16, 2008, just two days after Valentine’s Day.

A meeting was held last night in London to have a protest march on February 1, 2008 and subsequently to present a Petition to the British Government and Foreign Office expressing the plights of the Malaysian Indians and to pressure the Malaysian government to settle these unsettled matters immediately.

The meeting also discussed that on February 14, 2008, a group of Malaysian Indians residing in London will stage a hunger strike at Trafalagar Square at the same time as observed by their counterparts at Malaysia and Canada. It was also mentioned that on February 16, 2008 a group of Malaysian Indian will call at the Malaysian High Commissioner Office in London to hand over roses as similar to the incident that will take place in Malaysia.

Many ppl are asking how will DAP and the other Opps can do to help if they win the GE.

My answer is that they cant do anything in the short term but once corrupted govt is wiped out and funds are well managed then slowly but surely everyone will benefit.

Why are the INdians asking how can DAP help? What are they gonna do? DAP and the rest cant be giving empty promises like “we will build tamil schools etc etc etc”.

Let’s us work together as ONE first and kick the stupid BN out then we will be able to see a better future.

Stop being selfish and ask what each BA party can do for each community but let us look at the bigger picture as Malaysians.

If fighting for equality for all Malaysian including Malay by the Opposition which include DaP, Pas, as well as the PKR, does not also meant fighting for the Indian, don’t you think you would have Label them as being different if not inferior from the other Malaysian.
If you would please elaborate more about the Opposition’s view being narrow and short term. Don’t you think demolishing the Hindu temple by the Police, not even a little too aggressive and more being very narrow indeed.
Maybe you are just like me, very very naive in regards to political events and sensitive happenings of Malaysia. If I were you, I would read more before I call the Opposition view Narrow and short term.
Anyway I would be just happy for the Opposition to just fight for malaysian rights! Indeed if they could win, it may also meant LONG TERM if that is what you meant by short term

I see several bloggers have tried to point out to you why you have to vote opposition but you donâ€™t seem to get it.
Iâ€™ll try to explain my point in a scenario:

Imagine you are stranded in an island and you have no idea when you will be rescued. You meet a native on the island and he shows you those only 2 types of fruit, which are eatable. One fruit is called BN, which is more colorful and look juicy. The other fruit is called Opposition, which is not colorful and doesnâ€™t look juicy at all. Your first instinct is to follow what the native eats. So for 5 consecutive days you have been eating BN. The problem is every time after eating you have diarrhea. You ask the native what will happen if you start eating Opposition. He says he has no idea because he only likes to eat BN, which is very juicy. He is not sure whether Opposition will cause you to have diarrhea but he assures you that Opposition is an eatable fruit. What will you do? Will you continue to eat BN and have diarrhea every time or try the Opposition and hope for the best?

My point is: in this coming GE you choices are:

1)Vote for BN so that the present situation will get worst

2)Vote for Opposition and hope for a change for the better.

3)Donâ€™t vote at all.

I dont think Sungei Siput is a safe seat for SamyVelu who is carrying heavy load of curses from many Indians. He has yet to see the reality.May be as the days get closer to elections when more events come by, SVellu will be able to assess the magnitude of his losses.

If he decides to change, then he is a coward running away from a losing battle to a safe seat to secure a job for maintaing his greed.

Sami Value was in India recently to look for film roles and see a special doctor. Somebody told him about a ayurvedic doctor who can make him look younger, the same doctor advised Morarji Desai ex India PM to drink his own urine to stay healthy and energetic.

Semi Value will not stand for election. No chance to win. So he will now become actor producer of Tamil films. Maybe when he become superstar, he may come back to stand election or maybe try his luck in Tamil Nadu. Maybe become Chief Minister there.

Actors in India have become politicians and Ministers and Chief Ministers. This is first time politicians going to become film star.

..how can we vote for the opposition if their vision is narrow and short term.Which serve only a particular community.We want the opposition to serve all Malaysian and fight for all Malaysians.Is that too much to ask – Thegame

Come come. By no stretch of the imagination can that be believed. The BN is of narrow vision and serves only a particular community(ies). Why go further – their party components reflect that.
There is infinitely more malaysianess in the opposition parties. Unfortunately, BN have made the country sectarian-rife and the opp (or Govt In Waiting) has to defeat the BN at its own game. That should not prevent the various communities from exerting their malay_ asian-ness.
That being said, my success rate has been pretty good so far(crossing the racial divide including malays, chinese n Indians). And I`m not even a member of any party. See it can be done. All that`s needed is lateral thinking. And faith in yourself.

What about a self-proclaimed pseudo political activist with a Kg. Attap education turning to being a porn star to pay his bills? That is a first too. Don’t think he can make it though since he does not have the equipment to go with the job.

Don’t insult Kg Attap people. They are 100 times smarter and more successful than you all. What have you all got? SPM grade 2 or 3 with five credit. Oh, yes i know, some of you with a masters degree now. Which uni? Iwantogo Uni?

I have not heard from him on the issue in the past three years and I do not know whether he had tabled the proposal in Cabinet and it got shot down or whether he never raised it in Cabinet at all.

At the time, Samy Vellu told Kula and I that it was a good proposal and that he would take it up to the Cabinet. The message is as applicable to you (darkhorse) as to many others including me. It seems to me that somehow others can make fun of me but I canâ€™t make fun of others. But since Sdr Lim has chosen to post the warning directly below my posting, it is obvious that I am deemed the main culprit. I guess I have to accept that. But before I go, can Sdr Lim and others please read the posting by Dracula above (the one above the warning? I reproduce here just in case you donâ€™t follow me).

Who are darkhorse, colonel, Dracula, laifoong, and diaperhead anyway? It would seem that so many are against me, but are they actually the same one person? Is there a possibility that they are colluding in a private chat room first before they start to irritate others. You must see how they castrated Earnest earlier. May I know where is Earnest now?

You returned to the blog and in quick time resorted to your old practice of making comments on commentators instead of commentators’ comments. I put you “on ignore” and told you so, to avoid interacting with you. That didn’t work as you kept referring to me in your postings. Then I thought perhaps if I apologized for annoying you with the “stupidity of my observations”, you’d stop – and to your credit you did.

The Colonel even pleaded with you to communicate with him via his private e-mail which he gave you and asked that you not litter the blog with personal and irrelevant comments. But what did you do in return for the kind gesture?

I cannot speak for the rest. What’s with Diaperhead?? He is nowhere to be seen.

In cyberspace as you know you can choose to be whoever you want to be. What is relevant is that you show civility in your interaction with posters. In your brief absence from the blog, there was civility in the exchanges. That changed when you returned. There must be something in your writing that annoys some posters. You are personal with posters whereas what is important are the issues. You took upon yourself to reprimand posters when you feel they are wrong in their views. That cannot be right.

I thought undergrad2 even congratulated you for abandoning your abrasive and confrontational way you chose to interact with posters generally. You then stopped going after him.

You’re capable of providing intelligent input. You know that. Stop your wayward ways and I think everything will be fine.

YB Kit merely “draw the line” after your posting and he is not singling you out.

This is a serious political blog and I think all of us should treat it as such.
