One-third of seats in four states enough to win, says Kit Siang

PETALING JAYA, April 11 — Victories in a third of the parliamentary seats from Sabah, Sarawak, Johor and Pahang will guarantee that Pakatan Rakyat (PR) takes the next general election, Lim Kit Siang has said.

The DAP parliamentary leader stressed that it was crucial for the federal opposition to make an impact in these states, which have long been considered Umno-Barisan Nasional (BN) strongholds.

“Sabah, Sarawak, Johor and Pahang all make up 99 parliamentary seats. If we can win one-third of each state’s parliamentary seats, we would have approximately 33 seats.

“If we then add that to the 82 seats we have now, we will have passed our majority mark and (be) on our way to Putrajaya,” Lim told attendees at a DAP fundraiser last night.

The Ipoh Timor MP pointed out that in the last Sarawak parliamentary election, PR had only won one seat in the state. The pact also took just two seats in Pahang.

PKR contested 97 federal seats in 2008, while PAS and the DAP ran in 66 and 47, respectively.

PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang had said in September last year that the party aims to win 60 federal seats in a general election expected soon.

This was after vice-president Salahuddin Ayub said in July the party wanted to contest 80 federal seats.

Umno has declared it can win back PKR-held seats as the PR lynchpin is seen as the weakest link in the opposition pact.

Election 2008 saw PKR become the largest opposition party in Parliament with a total of 31 MPs after BN suffered its worst performance at the polls ever, ceding five state governments and 82 parliamentary seats.

But it failed to defend Hulu Selangor in a by-election and lost a further six MPs who decided to become independent, allowing the DAP to become the biggest opposition party in Parliament with 28 MPs.

PAS, despite being the largest PR party in terms of membership, had the smallest representation in Parliament, with only 23 MPs after the polls.

Such assumption is only valid provided BN does not manipulate the electoral roll and carry out vote rigging.

Onto the road to freedom or death will come if vote rigging decides the outcome.

I must commend you for your optimism and cock-sureness.

Make sure it happens. Or retire.

Bayi, before you start ordering people to retire, look into the mirror first. Are you launching your own Parti Poonjabee Malaysia to take over the role of the DAP? By the way, I have not seen you admonishing your kinsman Keshswindler Singh of Hutan Melintang who hopped over to Bn for $$$$

LKS, first of all, PR must field only the most winnable candidate for every seat.
It must also go for all seats available.
Also, be very, very chary of those who recently defect from UMNO/BN even though they may seem to spout disgust with their former party because the likelihood of Trojan is ever present!!!
And lastly, the top hierarchy must not waste their time on all sorts of minor diversionary issues created by UMNO/BN to fritter away their time!!!
We must go for broke this time!!!!!!!!

I couldn”t agree more with SS. I believe the time has come for the new generation of leaders to helm DAP. LKS has contributed so much and I believe he should let others continue that struggle to occupy Putrajaya. He should enjoy his remaining years (hopefully many-many more years to come) after working / fighting so hard for Malaysia.

    Daulat Daulat Daulat Malaysia !!

Actually the math is unattractive. 1/3 of these four states? Unlikely although its a good target to aim for.

Truth is PR has no choice but to make gains in Penang, Perak, Negeri Sembilan and hope for at best 15%-20% of the mentioned four states. That is more doable target..

    CAN do or not aaaah?
PR must do their part – b credible, hv good candidates (no expereince in looting, corruption, self-enrichment), b careful in accepting n nominating EX-UmnoB/BN kaki as candidates (nanti after being elected, they bcome billionaire when a failed UmnoB offers them $$$$ 2 hop, step n jump), b united
Then, rakyat/voters also do their part – VOTE 4 PR, ABU, encourage as many as possible other voters 2 vote 4 PR
D next GE, sure very DIRTY 1, all systems will b used by UmnoB 2 die die ensure victory 1
D WAR is on n all BATTLES must b won, hard fight ahead
