Ketuanan Rakyat to empower Malays and Malaysians

By Dr Chen Man Hin, DAP life advisor

Anwar Ibrahim by pushing ketuanan rakyat as a top objective of the PR agenda has show that he is a man of vision and a born leader.

Soon after the announcement, he immediately summoned a meeting of all heads of the five PR states for a discussion of the plan to tell the people of the importance of a ketuanan rakyat for the country.

Anwar is a man of principles and he practises what he believes in.

Critics say that this move was calculated to gain support in preparation for the coming general elections. This is not quite true, as the principle of ketuanan rakyat was proposed by PR some two years ago as a counter to Umno’s ketuanan melayu.

It is also an idea which is not familiar yet with the Malay community, and it will take patience and lots of explanation to win the people over. There is big task ahead to win support from the kampongs and rural areas. Umno will mount an attack on ketuanan rakyat. The battle in the kampongs will be intense.

However, Anwar will not be deterred. He believes in KETUANAN RAKYAT. It is his vision. He has a cause to achieve a better, just and prosperous Malaysia.

He really believes that ketuanan rakyat will be the political key that will inspire the people to be more united and struggle for a more progressive and prosperous society. He wants the people to know that they belong in this country, and they are all Malaysians.

Equally important, is his confidence that ketuanan rakyat will uplift his fellow comrades in the kampongs, urban towns and rural areas, and bring them into the modern global society. Through ketuanan rakyat, the Malays will be better educated, gain merit and competitiveness and ready to take on the world.

They will have more self-confidence and will not be dependent any more on the handouts given out by Umno. With ketuanan rakyat they will no longer be exploited by Umno putras.

50 years of Umno rule, forty years of the 30% bumi equity of New Economic Policy have not really helped the poor in the kampongs and rural areas. Half the households of Malays, Chinese and Indians earn less than RM3,000 a month. Rural homes are even poorer.

Umno wants a ketuanan Melayu policy so that Umno putras can enrich themselves. A recent analysis showed that Umno putras enriched themselves to the tune of RM60 billion or even more from the 30% bumi equity. No share for the kampong people. To continue the ketuanan Melayu policy would be disastrous. A government officer has predicted that with present policies, the country is heading for bankruptcy.

The time has come for a change. Our born leader, Anwar will lead PR to make the change. Embracing ketuanan rakyat will be the beginning of the change for a united, progressive and prosperous Malaysia.

What about PKR’s penchant for chosing venal wakil rakyats who would betray the rakyat’s wishes the moment a few ringgits are waved before their eyes? If you can’t pick sound candidates, what right have you to want to form the government?

“I don’t have to explain to him (Phang). I am not accountable to him and there is no necessity for him to pressure me.”

‘ketuanan rakyat’ does not empower people
    – Nazri

    ———–
This self-appointed, arrogant hotshot kampung juara, Nazri Aziz of the “Ketuanan Melayu” mindset just proves how dangerous the Ketuanan Melayu ideology is to all the races of the country. Nazri is in Parliament under the pleasure of the people and not appointed by some Ketuanan Melayu overlord.

The Ketuanan Melayu position harks back to the dark period where the elites practically emasculated the population into submission under their greed and arrogance of power.

Nazri forgets that the new country, Malaysia was forged from the train wreck of centuries of Ketuanan Melayu failure and neglect to protect the people from the tyranny of arbitrariness and absolute power. Malaysia was formed so that the people would prevail over the old power of the Ketuanan Melayu setup.

The Constitution was a celebration and recognition of the will and aspiration of the people and not of the machination of the elites. Parliament is the apex of people’s power. If it were not so, the rulers and their cohorts would be running this country and not by the people. But unfortunately, the elites have hijacked the powers of Parliament by introducing draconian measures and instruments of oppression into the system and wreck the original Constitution. Parliament is now controlled and infiltrated by these old school elitist supremacist with their clarion call for the reestablishment of the Ketuanan Melayu old order.

Ketuanan Melayu was a total failure for the Malays themselves and history would repeat itself if this group of racists disguised under the banner of the supposed empowerment of a single race were to prevail. Ketuanan Melayu is not about the advancement of the people’s destiny; it’s about the return of the master-slave dichotomy.

People, don’t be fooled. Reclaim back the country from these Ketuanan Melayu wannabes.

Let me point to an example of how things could be different. Idris Ahmad, PAS Info Chief, listed a long list of taking Malay reserve land by UMNO/BN. I can say without hesitation that if DAP part of the govt that ruled this country, it would never happen. Neither would be the taking away of native land in Sarawak and Sabah.

The reason is simple. Malay reserve land and native land is more than just ‘things’ and resources – they are fundamental foundation of nation building – something too important to simply take for granted. More importantly, there really is no need for it when there are human resource and intangibles that can be tapped without damaging them. In other words, without damaging these things, EVEN more can be build to share.

That is the real shame of BN betraying the Alliance original founding which is what Ketuanan Rakyat really means. If they had not gone so far down Mahathir politics of convenience, and gone back to Tunku’s original ideal, so much more could have been build to share. It may not have given everything everyone want and no govt can, but all the cries of need would have been taken care of.

More importantly, all the cries of need and desperation can be taken care of and most wants pretty much too under Ketuanan Rakyat. But delay the change and even that opportunity is gone. If we have to sink lower in order to change, – everyone needs will not be taken care of, at least not for a long time.

Umno’s Ketuanan Melayu policy is like cancer
That kills the fairness of racial equality
And the progress of economic prosperity
    Leading the nation to bankruptcy
PR’s Ketuanan Rakyak is your answer
To uplift racial harmony & national unity
For a progressive & prosperous society
    For advancement based on meritocracy

    BN OUT
    Pakatan Rakyak IN

In the 2008 general election, Umno garnered only 29.33% of the popular votes or 2,381,725 votes. It won only 79 seats or 35.6% of the seats in Parliament. Without the Indians, Chinese and other parties from Sabah and Sarawak, Umno would not be heading the government.

Umno, on its own, can’t uphold or propagate Ketuanan Melayu. It needs the support of the non-Malays to do that. So it is the non-Malays who make Ketuanan Melayu possible.

The mata sepets and the kaki botols fully deserve what they are getting today.

If Ketuanan Melayu is taken to mean Malay royalties one will have to ask who do they ‘tuan’ over. Do they tuan over Malays only or over Malaysians? If they are supposed to tuan over all Malaysians then Melayu only decribes the race of the human beings who happen to be accepted by the constitution as the Rulers of this country. Since the word Rulers have a clearcut meaning in the constitution, it cannot be replaced by the word ‘Ketuanan Melayu’. As Ketuanan is just a common Malay word, it can be used together with any other word to convey whatever meaning that can generally be accepted by persons who understand Bahasa Malaysia.

UMNOputras like to retain the word ketuanan melayu to give Malays the impression that they tuan over others in the country. They do it to mould the mindset that only the party that coins the phrase would ensure Malay’s supremacy in the country though supramacy of any particular race is not recognized by the constitution. Indeed the constitution recognizes the special position of Malays because Malays were said to be weak at the time of Merdeka, based on the proportion of people so classififed in the community. UMNOputras now utilses the position of the Rulers to ensure that the term Ketuanan Melayu become sedition-sensitive. Unfortunately since the 1992 constitutional amendment UMNOputras are free to play with the prestige of the ruling houses for political advanatge, without any response from the aggrieved parties.
