Mr. Bean, Death, and Taxes

by G. Krishnan

I can’t help it, but on more than one occasion, it’s been difficult not to have the image of the Rowan Atkinson character, Mr. Bean, come to mind while watching, listening or reading some of the comments of Abdullah Badawi. The most recent instance of this seemed to be during his address to the Malaysian Student Leaders Summit. Apparently, he wasn’t even in tune with the title of his speech! Beyond that, the hollowness of his comments in response to the students’ questions seemed to reflect contempt for the intelligence of the students. (see Malaysiakini)

I will admit, it’s difficult for me to decide if the Badawi I am watching or listening to is the real Badawi or if he’s simply putting on an act. Either way, it’s a rather disturbing and unsettling thought. Could our prime minister really be serious about some of the public pronouncements he makes? And does he really expect that the public is so gullible as to take it all in?

He comments – with seeming naivety – on an on-going police ‘investigation’ of an alleged sodomy case and prejudices the case with bizarre public pronouncements. And despite the nakedly transparent political motivation for this pursuit of Anwar, the prime minister, with a Mr. Bean like persona of artlessness and innocence, in a not so tacit fashion gives his blessings to this seemingly legitimate police investigation. How, in the name of justice can we expect such an investigation, where the political establishment doesn’t even attempt to disguise its prejudice about the matter, to have any ounce of credibility to it? But yet the prime minster, in a Mr. Bean like haze and stupor, seemingly finds noting problematic about the process.

So, in light of a politically motivated ploy to bring down Anwar, the prime minister in fact utters the words that: No one will stop him [Anwar] ‘from contesting [in the impending by-elections in Permatang Pauh].’ I suppose we’re also to believe that the postponement of the court hearing regarding the Kulim-Bandar Baru parliamentary seat really had nothing to do with the possibility that Anwar may have opted to run in that by-election if that constituency has to re-vote.

Let’s see, was it Badawi, who told us earlier this year that he had no plans to dissolve parliament in February? Was it also Badawi and his BN who told us that there would be no fuel price increases after the March 8 general elections or that the average person would not be adversely affected by it?

    AAB spend all his time sleeping and planning conspiracy, where got time to study the speech topic…

    “Stop making people angry and hate the government.” AAB said yesterday to civil servants.

    The PM’s residence must be full of mirrors with built-in speakers that automatically say “You are the fairest of them all” whenever Badawi looks into the mirrors. Courtesy of the 4th floor boys.

    Typical of Umno politicians, our PM believes that he is the supreme ruler of the land – the jury, the judge, and executioner (not just 3-in-1, but all-in-one).

    Put our Umno politicians on a stage for a real-time debate or impromptu speech, then we will see their true colour – tin kosong.

    Yes, our PM had to be reminded by a bold but obviously sharp-thinking student leader that he was way out of the topic of the day. And the most howling or ‘O my god’ moment was that AAB did not even understand, despite the reminder, that he was out of point. He was afterall still floating in his sleepy world.

    A great eye opener indeed for our student leaders! Wonder if the ex-student leader from Uniten, the one full of sai, was in the audience as well?

    Mr.Bean he is.
    UMNO consists of taxi drivers….farmers…low class teachers…uneducated village heads….what do you expect..from them?
    Worst of all…they apply another sting…..get filthy rich…own so much stolen money to buy properties…..all dressed up…in suits and tie…all decorated with titles…to program Malaysians…seeing how successful they are….and be afraid of them…like 100 years ago….treating British….or whites….like Gods.
    Then..comes one educated man…..a Dentist!!!…WOW!!!…UMNO so happy….make him M.Besar.
    Now listen to that man talking.
    Of course…he thought he was so smart…giving broomsticks to shame UMNO members too…trying to win Malaysians ..with that act.
    Mr. BEAN….you say? Why there is more than one..in UMNO….much much more.

    Campaign song for Permatang Pauh

    On a wagon bound for Permatang Pauh
    There’s the PM with a mournful eye.
    High above him there’s a swallow
    Winging swiftly through the sky.

    Chorus:
    How the winds are laughing;
    They laugh with all their might,
    Laugh and laugh the whole day through,
    And half the summer’s night.
    Dollah, Dollah, Dollah, Dollah,
    Dollah, Dollah, Dollah, dol,
    Dollah, Dollah, Dollah, Dollah,
    Dollah, Dollah, Dollah, dol.

    “I’m complaining,” said the PM,
    “Why does umno keeps losing elections?
    How can I be PM if this goes on?
    Where to get my rice bowl now?”

    (Chorus)

    “Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is unlikely to be arrested until a new DNA Bill is passed in Parliament later this month”, according to influential daily Nanyang Siang Pau, quoting unnamed sources on Sunday (referred to in yhsiew’s post above).

    That is because our solicitor general assigned the burden of making a determination on the case is not so ‘Mr Bean’ after all. He knows that it is folly for him – no matter what the political pressures – to proceed with a charge without reviwing and obtaining solid forensic evidence of DNA (better still verified by foreign experts).

    Certainly he is not going to take personal responsibility of being assigned the blame of formulating a charge based on fabricated or inadequate evidence against an Opposition leader, who by a change of political fortunes, might well sit at the helm as next prime minister of the country!

    So the central question is will Anwar have the chance to diffuse the threat of a sodomy II charge and become the PM???

    The answer is affirmative “yes” (1) IF what Nanyang Siang Pau reported were true – and what is more important (2) IF there were credibility in what Anwar predicted ie that Pakatan Rakyat (“PR”) would secure sufficient cross overs and defections from BN to command the majority in Dewan Rakyat to move the vote of no confidence and form the government by September 16th 2008 which is only 43 days from now!

    This is because such a Bill making it illegal for anyone to refuse DNA testing in criminal cases, even if tabled later part of this month, has to go through the following processes:

    · Debated in the Dewan Rakyat and passed with BN majority over PR’s number of votes;

    · Then if passed in lower House (Dewan Rakyat) it has to be presented to Upper House (Dewan Negara) for 3 readings, the 1st the legislation’s proposer presents it to the Senate, at the 2nd, the bill is debated, at the 3rd only a vote is taken whether to pass or reject the bill;

    · If passed by Dewan negara, then the bill is presented to the King for royal assent;

    · If the King approves the Bill still has to be gazetted to be law;

    · After gazetting the police still have to make a formal application to Court to have Anwar provide the DNA;

    · Anwar’s lawyers can institute all kinds of peremptory and procedural challenges to delay Court’s hearing of the application (There will be fertile grounds for objections especially for a bill/legislation passed in a hurry that has little time to work out rthe ambiguities and loopholes).

    What I am trying to say is that by the time all the above procedures and processes have been worked out to get his DNA, it would have way passed the 16th September dead line that Anwar said he would form the government rendering such an exercise academic….

    So if Anwar has any credility in what he said about the crossovers by Sept 16th this legislation in practical terms will pose no problem at all to him.

    Our sleepy flip flop PM does not qualify to equate with Mr. Bean. At least Mr bean with all the comedy, he has a heart for the people. I should say our “Top Guy” should be equate with mashed potatoes with his smiley mumbling mouth whenever he speaks to the rakyat. He cant even potray himself properly as a PM in front of 500 students. Remember they r just students. His answers sometimes are so shallow, naive, irrelevant and even at one time u dont know whether he was answering or just mumbles to himself. What a crap load of advisers he has.
    And the rakyat has to bear with this guy for another TWO YEARS!!

  31. #31 by boilingmad on Tuesday, 5 August 2008 - 12:39 pm

    Yes, please do not equate bodowi with Mr. Bean. There is one BIG (or many) difference(s) between the two … the stupid tactics/ inventions of Mr Bean DO work, while you know lah those of bodowi – nothing works.

    And also, why was bodowi not in tune with the topic he was supposed to deliver to the students? That’s because he read the speech (which was probably written by someone else) earlier and found out that he didn’t understand a word that was written. So, how could he possibly talk on a subject he knows nothing at all!

    And if UMNO wants to use the sodomy II against Anwar, let them. They are just digging their grave deeper. They are still living under their ‘tempurung’ to believe that the people of PP are dumb enough to believe this. I say, let them do what they want, but Anwar & PR must make sure they don’t play dirty. Just present teh truth and they will surely win the hearts of the people of PP.

    the blindness of wealth greed have overcome government policies.
    there were never a Malaysian government that really builds this country for her people.
    only reason to be in the politic is to be super rich and powerful.
    Rakyat (weaker pack , lost sheep or herd of cattles ) are normally the stake prize for all politicians.

    It’s hard to imagine leader of this country as ‘Mr Bean’ when the politics of the country led is infused with sex, natural and unnatural kind – where “reports on the finer points of a rectal examination and revelations about the sexual preferences of the dead mistress make other sex scandals that once shocked people here – such as Monica Lewinsky and her blue dress – seem almost Victorian” – per Thomas Fuller International Herald Tribune.

    The very universe of Mr Bean and the setting of sex ladened Malaysian politics don’t jive.

    Mr. Bean’s character transcends language (throwback to days of Charlie Chaplin)… no talking, no nudity, no sex & no sodomy! The main characteristic of the Mr Bean character according to Rowan Atkinson, is childlike selfishness and self-absorption in an innocently dumb way!

    If you need to change the law, like passing the DNA bill, to charge, isn’t it political? If it is political, then the case has no merit. The world is looking at the case, only fools will continue with it.

    If AAB is wise, he will stop the whole thing and leave some good “karma”. “Karma ” is “karma” and it works on all beings, whatever your religion. If AAB insists of continuing, bad karma will catch up. There is no escaping.

    Maybe for those who expected wisdom or intelligence from the PM it would have been a disappointment but not for us. Most of us would agree the level of wisdom demonstrated by the entire government of BN (excluding 1 or 2) is extremely low for any country in the world. This has been further reduced by mockeries of Police, Judiciary and AG office.

    In fact the mainstream media too can’t hide their disappointment with ministers nowadays. Marina Mahathir candidly mentioned it in her blog on how cheeky the news papers have nowadays. Star’s title “The PM grilled by students” is a perfect example to show how poorly the PM had responded students.

    Rowan Atkinson acts as a nerd whereas AAB is a nerd who is acting as the PM.

    Atkinson is a highly qualified graduate from an established and welknown university. We all know what qualification AAB has; what studies he majored in and what sort of local university he comes from.

    AAB’s claim to wisdom is his interpretation of the AlQur’an through his Islam Hadhari. Even fellow muslims do not accept Hadhari as the AlQura’n is already a well researched text which does need a nerd to interpret.

    Anyway Atkinson can make a joke of anything and everything including himself and make people laugh at Mr. Bean’s foibles and follies. What about AAB? He is joke personified in Malaysian politics as the ever sleeping nerd who is yet to wake up to the realities facing the country and himself.

    There is a legendary story about Lee Kuan Yew many years ago when he was PM and was going to give a speech on Singapore’s TV. A fly was flying around him while they were preparing him to go live. Everyone in the room including the head of the TV station himself had to try and get rid of the fly to no avail. After a while, he told all of them to stand still. He then waited for the fly to settle down and with one stroke killed it. He told the station manager, if you cannot do something well, quit. Next day, the guy was gone.

    What does our PM do when a bridge is falling apart for the 2nd time? He tells his staff don’t dissapoint the people!!! What a joke.

    The question asked by the students at the forum was nothing. He got away easy and he still failed miserably. One of his answer about reform was that it would continue even if he is not around. Is he kidding??? Or is he deluded, like Mr. Bean as G. Krishnan says…

    Can you guys remember the little brown teddy bear Rowan Atkinson likes to shake and choke around with? It bears an uncanny resemblance to the one we’re talking about don’t you think?
