Back to basics for Malaysians

The 14th General Elections on Wednesday, 9th May, 2018 provided a second chance to Malaysia to reset nation-building policies and directions.

Sixty-one years ago, when the country attained Merdeka in 1957, and 55 years ago when Malaysia was formed in 1963, we set out as a young nation, brimming with hope and confidence, dedicated, in the words of the Merdeka Proclamation 1957 and reaffirmed in the Malaysia Proclamation six year later, that the nation “shall be for ever a sovereign democratic and independent State founded upon the principles of liberty and justice and ever seeking the welfare and happiness of its people and the maintenance of a just peace among all nations”.

We promised to ourselves that the nation will be “a beacon of light for a disturbed and distracted world”.

But we lost our way and became instead a black hole of kleptocracy and kakistocracy.

Malaysians must go back to the basics, and what better way to begin than to return to basic constitutional and nation-building documents like the Merdeka Constitution 1957, the Malaysian Agreement and Constitution 1963 and Rukunegara 1970 to fulfil the Malaysian Dream to be a model to the world as to how a nation of diverse races, religions, languages and cultures could be united, harmonious, democratic, progressive and prosperous, with a government of integrity guided by the principles of good governance and accountability.

This is the challenge to all Malaysians today, because it is unlikely that Malaysia will be given a third chance to fulfil the Malaysian Dream.

Let us put the dark days of May 13, 1969 forty-nine years firmly behind us and learn the most important lesson of all – the need for perpetual mutual respect, sensitivity, civility and decency among Malaysians even among political foes in our plural society

Today is May 13.

Let us put the dark days of May 13, 1969 forty-nine years firmly behind us and learn the most important lesson of all – the need for perpetual mutual respect, sensitivity, civility and decency among Malaysians even among political foes in our plural society of diverse races, religions, languages and cultures.

Let us not only resolve that our politics should be more decent and civil, minus the lies, fake news and false information so ubiquitous in recent general elections campaign, but such qualities should guide us in every aspect of our national life.

Let us never forget, what whatever our differences, including our political differences, we are first and foremost Malaysians singing a common national anthem of Negaraku.

The 14th General Election has given Malaysians a second opportunity to re-set nation building policies and directions and to forge a new national reconciliation and unity – whether Pakatan Harapan or non-Pakatan Harapan voters and supporters.

Let us begin a new day for Malaysia.

Time for unity and reconciliation

There is an air of freedom and liberation in Malaysia, that the country has been given a second chance to pursue our original Malaysian Dream to be a model to the world as to how a nation of diverse races, religions, languages and cultures could be united, harmonious, democratic, progressive and prosperous, with a government of integrity guided by the principles of good governance and accountability.

We must institute reforms to restore the independence, efficiency and professionalism of national institutions which had been ravaged by the excesses and mistakes of the past.

Those who have not broken the laws of the land and have not abused their powers should have nothing to fear. Read the rest of this entry »

I have never accused Najib or UMNO of being anti-Chinese, anti-Indian, anti-Buddhism, anti-Christianity or anti-Hinduism and they should stop making wild and false allegations that DAP and I are anti-Malay and anti-Islam

It is time that Malaysians return to honest, decent and civil politics about policies and programmes instead of the dishonest, indecent and uncivil politics of lies, hate and fear arousing primordial racial and religious sentiments of fear and hatred.

For instance, I have never accused the Prime Minister and UMNO President, Datuk Seri Najib Razak of being anti-Chinese, anti-Indian, anti-Buddhism, anti-Christianity or anti-Hinduism and Najib, UMNO leaders and UMNO propaganda apparatus should stop making wild and false allegations that DAP and I are anti-Malay and anti-Islam.

Najib and UMNO leaders warn that if UMNO is defeated in the 14th General Election, the Malays in Malaysia will perish.

How can Najib and the UMNO leadership, who have dominated the government in the country for more than half a century, have such low opinion of the Malays as to believe that the Malays are so gullible that they could believe such trash and falsehoods churned out by the UMNO propaganda mills?

How can the Malays perish in Malaysia when Tun Mahathir will be the seventh Malaysian Prime Minister and Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim the eighth Malaysian Prime Minister if Pakatan Harapan defeats UMNO/BN in the 14GE on May 9, 2018? Read the rest of this entry »

Reject UMNO/BN on May 9, 2018 to Save Malaysia from a kakistocracy now that we have become a global kleptocracy

The 14th General Election will be the most important general election Malaysians have ever had to face.

It will mark the first time in our history when a former prime minister leads the Opposition into battle against the party and coalition he once led. In doing so, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has rejected his old party, Umno, and condemned it as a party that no longer fights for the interests of the Malays and Malaysians. He has accused Umno’s leaders as being greedy, corrupt, power-crazy, and serving their own interests.

Many Malays who still revere Tun Mahathir may now be convinced to vote against Umno for the first time in their lives. They may now see in Pakatan Harapan an alternative to Barisan Nasional (BN). This will spark a new voting trend for many Malays. And it brings hope to Pakatan Harapan. For we cannot ignore the fact that GE14 will largely be decided by the Malays.

At the same time, we must also take note that Malaysians of all races have never been so distrustful and contemptuous of BN than now. The 1MDB scandal has tarnished the country’s good name throughout the world, with billions of ringgit of the people’s money stolen from the fund, some of it going to a high public official known as MO1. Other scandals have emerged, like those involving Felda and Mara, which further show how untrustworthy the so-called protectors of the people have become.

After a long-overdue reign of 61 years, the BN government has become not only a kleptocracy (i.e. government of thieves) but also a kakistocracy (i.e. government by the worst). Read the rest of this entry »

I will sue Najib if he dares to accuse me of being anti-Malay and anti-Islam

Why is the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Razak playing up the spectre of the “Chinese peril” despite the community’s population having steadily declined over the years?

In 1957, Malaya’s population comprised 49.8% Malays, 37.2% Chinese, 11.1% Indians and 2% Others.

In 1970 Malaysia’s population comprised 44.32% Malays, 34.34% Chinese, 8.99% Indians, 11.89% non-Malay Bumiputeras, 0.67% others.

In 2010, the percentage of Malays in the Malaysian population increased to 55.07%, Chinese reduced to 24.34%, Indians dropped to 7.35%, non-Malay Bumiputeras maintained at 11.94% and 1.3% others. Read the rest of this entry »

Two messages to 15 million voters: one, the 14GE is all about Najib as Prime Minister; and two, it is opportunity once-in-61 years to “set Malaysia free”

I want through the first Pakatan Harapan ceramah in Skudai tonight since I was announced as DAP/Pakatan Harapan candidate for Iskandar Puteri to send out two messages to the 15 million voters in Malaysia, one, that the 14th General Election is all about Datuk Seri Najib Razak as Prime Minister; and two, the 14GE is an opportunity once-in-61 years to “set Malaysia free” from UMNO/BN misrule, corruption, abuses of power, injustices and exploitation.

I was in Sarawak three days ago and I found to my shock and horror that the SUPP is campaigning on the basis that the 14th General Election has nothing to do with Najib but about Sarawak’s right to self-determination.

I am sure that in Peninsular Malaysia, the component Barisan Nasional parties like MCA, Gerakan and MIC would be arguing along the same line, that the 14th General Election is not about Najib as the Prime Minister, but other secondary or subordinate issues. Read the rest of this entry »

Stampin joins Ayer Hitam, Teluk Intan, Langkawi, Pagoh and Semporna as among the high-profile constituencies in the nation where the battle to Save Malaysia from a kleptocratic state and rogue democracy will be fought in the 14GE

Tonight is a historic one for Stampin and Sarawak, for with the brave and selfless decision of the DAP Sarawak Chairman Chong Chieng Jen to leave his safe Bandar Kuching parliamentary seat for the dangerous Stampin parliamentary seat, Stampin joins Ayer Hitam, Teluk Intan, Langkawi, Pagoh and Semporna as among the high-profile constituencies in the nation where the battle to Save Malaysia from a kleptocratic state and rogue democracy will be fought in the 14th General Election and be the focus of attention not only of Malaysians but the world.

In the 13th General Election, DAP won Stampin by 18,000 votes. But through the worst gerrymandering in the redelineation of parliamentary constituencies, Barisan Nasional sought to win back Stampin by the most undemocratic means by moving 28,000 voters from Stampin to Bandar Kuching so that SUPP can win Stampin.

The issue in Stampin, Sarawak and even Malaysia is whether the voice of Chong Chien Jen will be silenced in Parliament if he is defeated in Stampin.

It is shocking and even mind-blowing that the SUPP could be so mindless and blind as to claim that the 14th General Election has nothing to do with Datuk Seri Najib Razak and that it is about Sarawak’s rights to self-determination. Read the rest of this entry »

Hang Tuah was right, Melayu takkan hilang di dunia – a Pakatan Harapan Federal Government will prove that it is more successful, efficient and capable of looking after the rights and interests of all Malaysians, whether Malays, Chinese, Indian, Kadazans or Ibans than under UMNO/BN government

When I left Malacca 32 years ago to contest in Penang, it was because we do not want to win only in Malacca, we want also to win in Penang, Perak, Selangor and now in Johor in our struggle to achieve the Malaysian Dream of Malaysia becoming an united and diverse world top-class nation.

When the DAP Central Executive Committee, together with national and state leaders, decided not to use the Rocket symbol in the 14th General Election, but to use instead the Pakatan Harapan common logo of the PkR symbol of the blue-eye, it was the DAP’s supreme sacrifice and strategy to ensure that the 14GE is not battle of individuals or even political parties, but a national patriotic movement to Save Malaysia from becoming a failed, rogue and kleptocratic state

We do not want just DAP to win, but all the parties in Pakatan Harapan – PKR, Amanah and Bersatu – to win and we want to send out the message to all Malaysians that the time has come for everyone of the 15 million registered voters to rise above self, race, religion, region and even political party to vote as one Malaysian people, an affirmation that we are Malaysians first and our race, religion, region or even political party, second. UMNO/BN want Malaysians to “lelong” away their rights and interests and those of future generations in the 14GE so that Malaysia can continue to be a global kleptocracy, with not only 1MDB scandal but also 2MDB, 3MDB and more 1MDB-like scandals galore making international headlines but not in Malaysia

The Putrajaya Jualan Sentuhan Rakyat programme yesterday, where the Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism Minister, Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin, accompanied by the Federal Territories Minister, Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor and even the Chief Secretary to the government, Tan Sri Ali Hamsa, dished out groceries with big discounts is most saddening but very symbolic.

It is a most symbolic characterization of what UMNO/BN want the 15 million Malaysian voters to do – to “lelong” away their rights and interests and those of future generations in the 14th General Election on May 9, 2018 so that Malaysia can continue to be a global kleptocracy, not only 1MDB scandal but also 2MDB, 3MDB and more 1MDB-line scandals galore making international headlines but not in Malaysia.

Call on the leaders of the eight Barisan Nasional component parties in Sabah and Sarawak to requisition an emergency meeting of the BN Supreme Council to amend the Barisan Nasional Manifesto from “implementing the Malaysia Agreement 1963 based on consensus” to a straightforward undertaking to implement the MA1963

The Barisan Nasional Manifesto for the 2018 General Elections is the latest and biggest “fake news” to surface in Malaysia.

The theme of the Barisan Nasional manifesto “Bersama BN, Hebatkan Negaraku” is not only false and misleading, but one of greatest fake news in the country.

In reality, the hard truth is “Bersama BN, hancurlah Negaraku”.

The most fraudulent statement in the Barisan Nasional manifesto is the undertaking that after the 14GE, the Barisan Nasional will implement the Malaysia Agreement 1963 proposals “based on consensus”. Read the rest of this entry »

Malaysia must rise again in the international community, respected and admired by the world as a top world-class nation, and not tarnished and scorned as a global kleptocracy doubling up as a truant parliamentary democracy

Today is the ninth anniversary of Datuk Seri Najib Razak as Prime Minister of Malaysia.

Parliament is expected to be dissolved in three days’ time on Friday, April 6, 2018.

All patriotic Malaysians are given an opportunity in the 14th General Election which should be held in a month’s time to ensure that Najib will not be able to mark his 10th anniversary as Prime Minster of Malaysia on this day next year.

Malaysians must elect a Parliament in 14GE where the views and concerns of ordinary Malaysians must be heard and not where their views and even their MPs are regarded as non-existent and “transparent” like me in Parliament

I have the honour to announce that the DAP and Pakatan Harapan candidate for the Johore State Assembly seat of Tangkak will be our incumbent DAP Tangkak State Assemblyman, Ee Chin Li.

The 14th General Election is a matter of days away, and everybody is expecting Parliament to be dissolved next week, either before or after the last parliamentary sitting on Thursday on April 5.

DAP would defend the existence of Malay Regiment in the way DAP will defend Chinese and Tamil schools in Malaysia and the country as a multi-racial, multi-lingual, and multi-religious and multi-cultural “Instant Asia’

I regret that the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Razak is continuing his politics of fear and fake news to incite the Malays to fear change, particularly in the imminent 14th General Election, warning that if UMNO loses, the Malays will perish and that DAP will rise in dominance directing and manipulating not only Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Datuk Seri Dr. Wan Azizah and Mohamad Sabu.

This is double fake news – firstly that Malays will perish if UMNO loses in the next general election; and secondly, that all the Malay leaders are stooges and puppets of DAP, including Mahathir, Muhyiddin, Anwar Ibrahim, Azizah and Mat Sabu.

Let me ask Najib – was DAP directing and manipulating the UMNO Government during the 22 years when Mahathir was the Prime Minister from 1981 to 2003, during which period was Najib was Pahang Mentri Besar from 1982 to 1986 and served in variouis portfolios as Minister of Youth, Education and Defence under Mahathir? Will the 14th General Election again fall on May 5 for Malaysians to finally fulfill their Malaysian Dream to have an united, clean, just, forward-looking, progressive and prosperous Malaysia

The Dewan Negara sitting has been moved forward so that it will end on the same day as the Dewan Rakyat on April 5, the latest indication that Parliament will be dissolved after the end of the Parliamentary meeting on April 5.

If Parliament is dissolved on April 6, two possible dates for Polling Day, if the traditional Saturday is observed, will be April 28 or May 5, the latter the same day as the 13th General Election five years ago in 2013.

Johore will be the front-line state in the 14th General Election. Yesterday, at the 52nd DAP anniversary celebrations in Ayer Hitam in Johor, the titanic battle for the parliamentary constituency of Ayer Hitam was launched with the announcement of the DAP-Pakatan Harapan candidate, Liew Chin Tong, the Johore DAP Chairman and current MP for Kluang. He will be contesting against the MCA Deputy President and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong, who had been three-term MP for Ayer Hitam since 2004. I have been a victim of UMN/BN “fake news” for the last four decades – UMNO leaders accuse me of being anti-Malay while MCA leaders accuse me of being anti-Chinese and had sold out the rights of the Chinese to the Malays

“Fake News” is the latest fashion of the day. The present preoccupation with fake news was started by Donald Trump, the President of United States, and it has been taken up with gusto by the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Datuk Seri Najib Razak, not so much to combat fake news, but to provide the circumstances and wherewithal to concoct and peddle fake news with immunity and impunity while suppressing truth and embarrassing news emanating from the Opposition and civil society.

What Najib, just like Trump, is doing is to launch a “fake anti-fake news” campaign!

DAP will field more youths and women as parliamentary and state assembly candidates and I look forward to Yeo Bee Yin and Hannah Yeoh as new DAP MPs in new Parliament

DAP will field more youths and women as parliamentary and state assembly candidates in the 14th General Election and I look forward to Yeo Bee Yin and Hannah Yeoh as among the new DAP MPs in the new Parliament.

I asked just now how many are older than me, and two persons identified themselves by a show of hands.

Three of us are the oldest in this gathering, but although we are septuagenarians or octogenarians (and Tun Mahathir is a nonagenarian, who will be 93 years old in another four months’ time), Malaysians in their seventies, eighties and even nineties, just like new generation of young Malaysians whether in their teens, twenties or thirties, have a Malaysian Dream we want to fulfill – not for the sake of ourselves as far as the septuagenarians, octogenarians and nonagenarians are concerned, but for our children and children’s children and for the country.

We all want Malaysia to be more united, harmonious, tolerant, developed, progressive, prosperous and democratic, a country where all Malaysians, regardless of race, religion, politics or class can feel proud of the country because it is a top world-class nation in every field of human endeavor.

But this is not the case, for after six decades of nation building, Malaysia has failed Malaysians and we have fallen down the ladder of nations in human excellence, achievements and accomplishments.

We have lost our way in the past six decades with countries more economically, educationally and politically backward than Malaysia having overtaken us on all fronts of human endeavor, becoming not only richer and more developed and prosperous, but less corrupt and more democratic and more respectful of the principles of good governance and the rule of law.

The 14th General Election will be the occasion for Malaysians, regardless of race, religion, politics or age to set things right in the country by re-setting nation-building policies and directions and by returning to the fundamental principles of harmony, tolerance, moderation and checks-and-balance to make Malaysia a top world-class nation in every field of human endeavor instead of becoming a global kleptocracy scorned and mocked by other nations!

Malaysians must have a Parliament which they can feel proud – a Parliament which understands the Malaysian Dream of all Malaysians and not one which is like the traditional three moneys, eyes that see not, ears that hear not and mouth that speaks not

Last night was the launch of the book by the DAP Selangor State Assemblywoman for Damansara Utama Yeo Bee Yin, the youngest member of the Selangor State Assembly, “Reimagining Malaysia”.

A small-town girl from Batu Anam, Segamat who have become an engineer after being recipient of the Gates Cambridge University Scholarship, Bee Yin tells in the book the story of her personal journey, her hopes and dreams for the country.

As I said in the foreword to the book, I believe most Malaysians have a dream to want to make Malaysia a better country for the people and themselves, which is shunted aside or snuffed out altogether by the exigencies of life, including parental expectations and pressures.

We must find ways to respond to these inner voices and give them room for expression.

Recently, it was reported that low wages and a lack of jobs have forced about 5,000 Malaysians to work and live illegally in South Korea, suffering human rights abuses and even denial of wages, many left to fend for themselves after suffering workplace accidents and getting fired.

Apart from the question as to what the Malaysian Embassy in Seoul is doing to look after the interests of these 5,000 illegal Malaysians in South Korea, the question we must ask is why these 5,000 Malaysians have gone to South Korea? Read the rest of this entry »

Pakatan Harapan wants to change the national landscape not only in the next five years but the next 10 to 20 years

Today’s launch of the DAP Penang Ubah fleet of 113 vehicles for the Pakatan Harapan 14th General Election machinery sounds the bugle of battle for the 14GE – not a war of cannons, guns or knives but a battle to win the hearts and minds of Malaysians to exercise their peaceful, democratic and Constitutional right to decide the next Federal Government through the ballot box.

I remember that when I first contested in Tanjong parliamentary constituency 32 years ago in 1986, it was to make the Penang the beach-head for a national campaign to make Malaysia an united, democratic, just, progressive and prosperous nation which would be a model to the world of how a nation of diverse races, languages and cultures could unite, succeed and prosper. Best way to remember Sanusi is to fulfill his dream for a change of government in Putrajaya in the 14GE

It is sad to receive news of Sanusi Junid’s passing this morning.

He himself said he was living on “borrowed time” and his attendance of the launch of Pakatan Harapan’s Manifesto for the 14th General Election in Shah Alam last night showed the significant progress achieved to realise his last dream of his “borrowed time” – to save Malaysia from the trajectory of a failed, rogue and kleptocratic state and to re-set nation building policies and directions to make Malaysia a success story and a world-class nation.
