Muhyiddin’s first task on his return to work after two-week quarantine should be to convene a specialised Parliamentary meeting in June focussed on Covid-19 outbreak


Perkara pertama yang perlu dilakukan Muhyiddin apabila kembali bertugas selepas menjalani kuarantin selama dua minggu adalah untuk memanggil satu persidangan khas Parlimen untuk membahaskan isu-isu berkaitan Covid-19

Perkara pertama yang perlu dilakukan oleh Perdana Menteri Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin apabila beliau kembali bertugas selepas menjalani kuarantin selama dua minggu adalah untuk mengadakan satu persidangan khas Parlimen yang berfokuskan kepada isu-isu berkaitan penularan wabak Covid-19.

Malaysia tidak boleh dicatatkan dalam sejarah sebagai satu-satunya negara yang gagal menyatu-padukan tenaga dan suara rakyat dalam menghadapi wabak Covid-19 kerana kegagalan kerajaan pintu belakang untuk mencari legitimasi sehinggakan Parlimen terpaksa disekat dan Ahli Parlimen dihalang daripada menjalankan tanggungjawab mereka untuk menyemak imbang dan meneliti tindakan kerajaan semasa negara dilanda Covid-19.

Sedangkan di negara yang teruk terjejas dengan Covid-19 seperti Sepanyol, United Kingdom, Itali, Jerman, dan Perancis (yang masing-masing berada di kedudukan ke 4, 5, 8 dan 12 dari jumlah terkumpul kes positif tertinggi) sekalipun, Parlimen mereka masih berfungsi dan menjalankan tugas mereka, begitu juga dengan Parlimen di Thailand, Singapura, Indonesia, dan Filipina.

Begitu juga dengan parlimen di Jepun dan Korea Selatan. Malah, Korea Selatan juga telah mengadakan pilihan raya parlimen semasa wabak Covid-19 pada bulan April 2020 untuk memilih 300 Ahli Parlimen baharu.

Mengapakah Malaysia perlu dicatatkan dalam sejarah sebagai negara yang menyekat fungsi Parlimen di bawah pentadbiran Muhyiddin?

Hakikat bahawa terdapat sifar kematian dalam 13 hari yang lepas dalam negara kita adalah satu perkara yang harus dipuji dan menjadi bukti professionalisme dan dedikasi perjuangan para petugas barisan hadapan dalam negara kita serta kerjasama yang ditunjukkan oleh rakyat dalam melawan wabak ini.

Jumlah peningkatan kes baharu harian dalam negara kelihatan terkawal dan selain daripada dalam kalangan buruh asing, peningkatan ini secara kasarnya telah turun kepada peningkatan satu angka.

Kini negara kita berhadapan dengan satu cabaran baharu yang terbesar — untuk belajar hidup bersama dengan virus ini sehinggalah satu vaksin atau penawar yang berkesan diciptakan dan tersedia dengan meluas, proses yang mungkin akan mengambil masa sehingga lima tahun. Kejayaan dalam menghadapi cabaran ini tidak boleh bergantung kepada kepercayaan kepada kerajaan semata-mata tetapi memerlukan perpaduan, sokongan, dan kerjasama semua rakyat Malaysia.

Apakah strategi untuk kita semua — bukan sahaja untuk memenangi peperangan melawan wabak ini — tetapi juga untuk menyekat sebarang kemungkinan berlakunya penularan semula, memastikan pelonjakan semula ekonomi negara, membuka semula institusi pendidikan, dan mengembalikan gaya hidup negara yang telah dilumpuhkan oleh wabak ini?

Kerana inilah penting untuk demokrasi berparlimen dikembalikan di dalam negara kita — supaya strategi dan rancangan keluar oleh kerajaan yang dapat dipersetujui oleh segenap masyarakat majmuk Malaysia dapat dibentangkan, dibahaskan, dan diluluskan di Parlimen sebagai sebuah Rancangan Pemulihan Wabak Covid-19 Kebangsaan.

The Prime Minister, Tan Sri Muhyddin Yassin’s first task as Prime Minister on his return to work after a two-week quarantine should be to convene a specialised Parliamentary meeting in June focussed on the Covid-19 outbreak.

Malaysia should not go down in history as the only country which cannot unite the energies of the people to face the Covid-19 pandemic because of inability to legitimise a backdoor government and is forced to lockdown Parliament and cripple the constitutional role of Members of Parliament to provide oversight and scrutiny of the Executive to improve the quality of government during the pandemic.

Even in countries badly hit by the Covid-19 pandemic, like Spain, United Kingdom, Italy, Germany and France (respectively the world’s present Top No. 4,5, 8 and 12 in terms of cumulative total of Covid-19 cases), their Parliaments continue to sit to perform their role of oversight and scrutiny, and the same applies to the Parliaments of Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia and Philippines.

The same applies to the Parliaments of Japan and South Korea. In fact, South Korea held a parliamentary election in the midst of the Covid-19 outbreak in the middle of April to vote for 300 members of the National Assembly.

Why then should Malaysia go down the road of infamy of locking down Parliament under Muhyiddin?

The fact that there had been no death in Malaysia in the Covd-19 outbreak for the last 13 days is most commendable and an excellent reflection of the professionalism and dedication of the frontliners and the co-operation of the people in the war to contain the coronavirus.

The daily increase of Covid-19 case is under control, and apart from migrant workers, it has mostly been reduced to single-digit figures.

Now Malaysia is faced is the greatest challenge – to learn to live with the virus until a vaccine or cure is found, which may take up to five years. The success cannot depend on the fiat of the government, but the unity, support and co-operation of the people

How are Malaysians to continue not only to win the public health war and to prevent any resurgence, but also to successfully bring about an economic recovery, re-opening of educational institutions and the restoration of national life in Malaysia which had been seriously paralysed by the pandemic?

This is why the restoration of parliamentary democracy is important – for the tabling and approval of an exit plan strategy and blueprint in Parliament which is accepted by all sectors of the Malaysian society as the Malaysian National Recovery Plan from Covid-19 Pandemic.

    Muhiyiddin got half his party disagreeing with him. Sacking Mahathir and his allies just guarantee the end of his tenure. Why wouldn’t Najib just wait it out to topple him? There is no deal he can make to stay in power..Najib has the upper hand.

    It is shocking frankly to read the online criticism of Mahathir by even many young Malays obviously UMNO/Najib supporters, the vitriol exposes the recklessness, narcissism, venom, cultism of a Najib led political agenda, all mixed with weaponised religo politics.

    It cannot be surprise the enforcement agencies and politicians are already so weaponised against Mahathir and Harapan. The real problem is Anwar, famous for his philosophies, really has no great answer for it, no one does.
