Are inflammatory religious remarks now fair game?

AUG 21 — Statements made by Mahathir Mohamad after a mosque function in Kedah as recorded by Sinar Harian (‘Hudud boleh dilaksana jika Pas sertai Umno’, August 17, 2012), if true, would constitute an unprecedented rebuff of the culture of religious respectfulness by any Malaysian politician of that reputation.

The report cites him as saying that:

• PAS should leave Pakatan Rakyat as soon as possible because they embrace “infidels” who evidently reject hudud. (“Pas harus keluar dari PR secepat mungkin kerana mereka saling berpelukan dengan orang kafir yang secara nyata menolak hudud.”);

• PAS will not be able to implement hudud as long as they are with a political party that does not recognise that “Islam is a superior religion.” (“Selagi Pas bersama parti yang tidak mengakui Islam adalah agama unggul, hukum hudud tidak dapat di laksanakan.”).

The first remark uses a derogatory term that no self-respecting Muslim Malaysian would cast in referring to his non-Muslim brothers and sisters, political differences notwithstanding. The second remark implies that all other religions are inferior to Islam.

Both are insensitive and divisive. They ought to have no place in our multi-religious political discourse.

It is regrettable that these words were issued by a former prime minister. They must nonetheless be censured. Silence would only signal that it is legitimate to engage in such religious mud slinging.

Has the mosque been used for political activities? Is Mahathir now a ‘recognised religious scholar’ by the Religious Department?

Is Christianity not a major world religion? Why are Christians so feared by Muslims in this country that they become a regular punching bag and the object of hatred ? These ‘attacks’ seems to have the active support of senior UMNO and BN politicians and this does not bade well for the stability of the country.

If Dr Mahathir were so confident that UMNO/BN will win the next general election in preservation of his political legacy (as claimed), he really does not need to come out (from retirement) to so actively and vociferously campaign and resort to such inflammatory religious/racial rhetorics. His stance could indicate that he is not sure of the eventual outcome of the next GE.

Mahathir can speak anything and no harm will come to him.
After all…he is the founder of UMNO b and without it….Najib may not be an appointed PM now.
Of late… whatever Mahathir spoke….Malaysians are laughing and enjoying an idiot talking….thinking he is so damn smart with his famous boring twists and turns.
Mahathir has exposed himself as the dirties most corrupted politician.
Let him talk till his heart’s content.
He is looking for attentions as well as keep speaking to save his sons.
UMNO b defeated….that’s hell for him….wondering what will happen to his son.. if he is not around.
Do not be confused….mamak has few adopted sons too. Very little is spoken about his adopted sons…which I suspect are his trusted cronies.

Mahathir dare not touch Samy Vellu because Samy warned he will exposed all if he got into trouble for corruptions.
Mahathir admitted Samy is very powerful.
This is how Mahathir will talk….to admit so that no one will blame him not sacking Samy.
He fears the University students most and tell all to study and do not be involved in politics.
He saw what U students did to Soeharto and had nightmares what Malaysian U students will do to him.
He even get nightmares watching “AVATAR” seeing bows and arrows defeated guns ans warships.
As time passes by….we all can see Mahathir is not that smart as we thought him to be.
His is very cunning and master the art to be first class con man to try fooling all Malaysians.
He did not have PR to deal with when he was PM.
He was smart enough to “resign” when he realized he is not wanted and respected as PM.
He is still the PM directing from backdoor.
If you say…that is smart and very intelligent man….so be it……for to be smart cunning …nothing hard to become one…successfully when you are a PM.
It’s the power given to do good or to do bad….and Mahathir is all bad.
