The federal government has raised electricity tariff by an average of 7.12 percent beginning June 1 as part of its subsidy reduction exercise.

The average rise is 2.23cent/kW unit, from the current average rate of 31.31 to 33.54cent/kW unit.

Natural gas prices are also set to rise by RM3 per mmBtu every six months until it reaches market levels by 2016, when its price would be fully floated.

Domestic users who use less than 300kW unit per month will not be subjected to this new electricity pricing scheme, which is multi-tiered according to usage.

According to Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Peter Chin, that this means that 4.4 million or 75 percent out of a total 5.94 million households would be unaffected by the new tariff.

The rate of monthly usage below 200kW unit will stand at 21.8cent/kW unit while for usage between 201 to 300kW unit the tariff will remain as 33.40cent/kW unit.

For those using 301kW to 1000kW units, the tariff has been raised from 0.1 to 10 percent, or RM0.07 to RM30.30.

However this only involves 23.5 percent or 1.39 million domestic users.

The waiving of the electricity bill for those who record less than RM20 usage monthly would cease on Dec 31, 2011.

The government has to fork out RM122 million in order to provide free electricity to 900,000 such users.

Meanwhile, it was also anounced that the charge to Petronas for power generation would rise to RM13.70 per mmBtu from RM10.70.

75 pct of households would be unaffected ? Who advises this idiot ? Every time there is a hike in electricity tariffs, everyone would be affected, including the poor families in East Malaysia that still depend on kerosene. The simple reason is the knock-on effect, which obviously a thick-headed minister would not understand.

Tell the local grocer and local butcher not to put up his prices. Tell the coffee shops and restaurant operators not to put up their prices. Tell the cinemas to maintain their ticket prices.

This is good news for Pakatan. We have an uncaring, insensitive and inefficient government. The 25 pct who can afford this hike simply will pass this on to the 75 pct who supposedly remains “unaffected”. I don’t think there will be elections anytime soon.

I understand that we have excess
    electricity capacity in this country.
And the excess electricity cannot be
    saved if not used.
During British colonial times, those who
use more electricity would be charged at
a lower rate and the rate for nighttime
    use would also be lower.
Perhaps that was to help mop up any
    excess capacity.
But in the present government, the
    reverse applies!!!

The more important question is why Najib has not called for election already? What is holding him up?

This is Malaysia, entitlement-ridden all the way up to the billionaires and the ministers. We tolerate abuse, we tolerate neglect but we have very low-tolerance for political wishy-washy. Badawi proved that convincingly. Najib is even worst than him.

The indecision is so glaringly unbearable compared to Anwar’s magnetic decisive oratorical skills. Najib is making himself an issue of personal poor leadership running up the GE..Its sheer classic screw-up..

    “陈华贵:“协议是由普通私人公司(指独立发电厂)与国能所签署,国能也是一家私人公司。因此,我们凭什么叫它们解密协议?”

    记者进一步追问这是否意味着购电协议不大可能被解密时,他则说:“我不是说不大可能,你只要跟着副首相所说般报道,政府将会考虑解密就行了。”

    他说,如果独立发电厂与国能都同意解密协议,那么“我们凭什么阻止解密?” (Malaysiakini, May 31)
