Why Muhyiddin’s education system sucks!

During the Sarawak state general election campaign, both the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and the Deputy Prime Minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin promised to consider the return of the teaching of science and mathematics in English (PPSMI) and that the government would study the possibility of using two mediums of instruction for teaching science and maths.

Has the Cabinet set in motion the return of PPSMI and the use of two mediums of instruction for teaching science and maths or is this just an empty campaign ploy for the Sarawak state elections?

Instead Muhyiddin as the Education Minister has brought forward the abolition of PPSMI by one year, from 2012 to 2011, catching parents and students by surprise.

Is he going to give the parents the option to decide whether to revert back to PPSMI for this year until a decision is taken whether the Cabinet is going to adopt two mediums of instruction for teaching science and maths?

The Barisan Nasional’s education system sucks basically for two reasons:

Firstly, failing to produce internationally-recognised a high-quality education system from primary to secondary and tertiary level which could meet the country’s aspirations to be a globally competitive nation with a creative workforce; and

Secondly, failing to be a major instrument of the Malaysian nation-building process.

I have just received a complaint that illustrates this outrageous aspect of the national education system – that although the Prime Minister is spending RM70 million to preach his 1Malaysia policy, the education system headed by the Deputy Prime Minister is already blatantly promoting the “1Melayu” call of Utusan Malaysia.

The latest April 2011 issue of Dewan Masyarakat with its feature article “Penghakisan Tanah Pusaka – Meruntuhkan Kuasa Politik Melayu (Bahagian Satu)” by Noor Azam which is compulsory reading material for all Form VI students for their General Paper is a case in point.

The article by Noor Azam, formerly political secretary to the Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad and ex-Chairman of TV3, quoting extensively from Mahathir’s “Malay Dilemma”, reeks of rabid Malay communalism studded with lies and falsehoods especially about the DAP, promoted Utusan Malaysia’s “1Melayu” slogan and the “Ketuanan Melayu” concept.

Clearly Noor Azam has either never heard or rejects Najib’s 1Malaysia objective to create “a more vibrant, more productive and more competitive” Malaysia where “every Malaysian perceives himself or herself as Malaysian first, and by race, religion, geographical region or socio-economic background second and where the principles of 1Malaysia are woven into the economic, political and social fabric of society”.

Noor Azam’s article in Dewan Masyarakat is excellent educational material to illustrate the outmoded thinking and communal poison which Malaysians must transcend if they are to move from the narrow and exclusive “1Melayu” call to the all-embracing, inclusive “1Malaysia” concept.

But this clearly is not the case for the reason why this Dewan Masyarakat article is made required reading for all Form VI students for their compulsory General Paper.

All Cabinet Ministers should immediately get a copy of the April 2011 issue of Dewan Masyarakat and read Noor Azam’s article and decide whether it is promoting Utusan’s “1Melayu” call or Najib’s “1Malaysia” concept.

Malaysians await as to whether the Cabinet would do what is right and expected of them tomorrow – to rescind the decision of the Education Ministry to make the article compulsory reading for General Paper for Form VI students and to express regret that the official organ of a government agency, Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka is openly challenging Najib’s 1Malaysia concept by adopting Utusan Malaysia’s contradictory “1Melayu” call.

The use of two mediums of instruction for teaching science and maths will result in 2 streams of graduates– one which is proficient in English and the other which “no speak white man”.

Guess which stream will end up unemployed?

The question is, what will become of the future of Malays in tis fast changing world if UMNO continues to rule this land?
They will be the eventual losers – equipped with inferior education, economically disadvantaged, low-skilled, without English proficiency and unemployable.

UMNO is the piper which is leading the Malays into the sea.
Will the Malays shun UMNO and Perkasa and save their future generations. To support UMNO is to support their own doom.
The Chinese can survive under any conditions.
The Indians can decide if they want to follow the UMNO piper or save themselves.

  13. #13 by monsterball on Tuesday, 26 April 2011 - 9:31 pm

What will be the future of Malays?
It all depend how long UMNO B can keep fooling them.
And if they do not believe Najib and Mahathir are great liars and stealing their money…they should read more ad do not be like blockheads…listen to Najib without checking out opions from others….and think think think.
It is because alot do not think and simply believewhatever the Govt say is right…then the future of these Malays can be considered..as lost souls out of their own doings.

All thinking Malaysians may get excited after reading this article but I prefer not to. Unless the more educated Bumis take a stand, many of our comments meant nothing to them. In the long term, they will create such mindset that will go noway in the modern ‘flat earth’. They will end up cursing the whole world; that is; the whole world will have no time to listen to such ranting. The country will then surely drift out of the progressive ones, finally have John Mugabe for companionship!

It is obvious that Najib and Muhyddin do not believe in the country’s educational system or else they would not need to send their children overseas to study. Najib preaches 1Malaysia because at his level he knows that he cannot last very long at the pinnacle of power if he alienates minority groups in the country which constitute more than 40% of the population. On the other hand Muhyddin preoccupation would be how to become the top dog which can only occur by displacing his only boss. He panders to the 1Melayu concept and its proponents because he thinks it is appealing to the power brokers in UMNO. All he is interested in is their support so that he can usurp power from his boss just like what his boss did to Badawi. For Muhyddin the the educational system is just a means to an end for him. He is not interested in giving the people a proper education using the most useful language. He is more keen on keeping the people ignorant so that they can be easily fooled and continue to depend of him and UMNO for direction. When he got enough of Malays support in UMNO he can displace Najib and automatically becomes the Prime Minister. As minority groups has not say whatsoever in this because the head of UMNO becomes the Prime Minister of Malaysia. Therefore there is no special reason why Muhyddin should be bothered with minority groups’ interest at all. His quest for power simply does not depend of them. Members of MCA, MIC and other component parties in BN are just stupid idiots whose main function is to misled their own race so that their rights are further diluted or taken away. In reality it is not BN which rules Malaysia but really radical UMNO which does. To anybody who can think, supporting MCA and MIC or for that matter any BN component party is one of the most stupid thing to do because you only get shit in return from UMNO their master.

Actually, under UmnoB/BN’s educational policy, very shiok n moral uplifting 1
UmnoB wants Malays, esp rural Malays, 2 feel good n smart, d cream of d nation
D standard of all public exams is so watered down each year, 1M’sia is producing incredible number of all A students every year

Self-shiok, many young Malays on paper r geniuses but really not so, still dumb enuf not 2 realise d evil deeds of UmnoB and 4 UmnoB 2 brainwash n enslave them
    Same too 4 many non-Malays who continue 2 support UmnoB/BN n willingly allow themselves 2 b subjugated n exploited by UmnoB/BN

  20. #20 by ablastine on Wednesday, 27 April 2011 - 9:30 am

If we look at all the policies in Malaysia now we can understand why despite constituting more than 40% of the population, the interest of minority groups are hardly fought for or taken into consideration. Obviously the supreme council of UMNO and not BN is the politburo of the country from which all policies of the country are determined with the help of Malay supremacy groups like Perkasa of course. That is why we see almost all State scholarships going to UMNO Malays and UMNO malays manning all State institutions and GICs irrespective of merits. That is why the NEM is going to be extended to eternity killing the country in the process. The interest of minority groups despite their high proportion in the country demographics hardly get representation because they have been throwing their weights behind useless parties like MCA, MIC and Gerakan. In actual fact the only one who has the power and did make an effort to moderate the excesses of UMNO preventing it from walloping everything in the country for themselves is the Prime Minister himself because he knows that the party will fall if minority groups organise themselves and get smart. If the party falls he no longer can become PM. However all others in UMNO are only interested in his hot seats and in fact the worse UMNO perform during his tenure as PM the more tenous his position becomes and the easier for his deputy to replace him. So it is to the interest of Muhyddin to antagonise the minority groups and worship those in UMNO to get their support on his way to replace the present PM.

BTW ,We have such a stupid DPM cum Minister of Education [deleted]..
Frankly, we have no hope for Malaysian education system(religiously mind bending and brainwashed teachers’ skulls ) in the foreseeable future!Bad english command definitely bad for econ-social growth..eventually lead and bring Malausia for downfall like Syria or Egypt.
This silly DPM( local college breeded betul nut )
Just waiting for 13th GE to knock off all those BN statuettes in Parliament.
These Malusai Education policies were made by UMNO and bureaucrats sympathetic to UM NO whose raison d’être is to find an easy and short cut way to produce scholars, doctors, engineers, dentists and Phds out of garbage. Mediocrity begets mediocrity and that is the biggest Achilles heel of this country, be it education, competitiveness and governance. If you have idiots who are now education DG, State directors, headmasters and headmistresses, what can you expect out of them? Any bright spark would stick up like a sore thumb. Syllabus was never an issue. Just teach our kids and young adults language skill, thinking skill (yes ask them to write essays and précis) maths, and computing, I believe the rest would take care of itself. When the objective is not meritocracy, any of the problems you mentioned are mere symptoms. Why do we have half baked textbooks? Because they were written by half baked teachers [deleted] to promote an scr*w-up world view. Why do we have half baked exam questions? Because they are set by half baked teachers who probably can’t understand the questions themselves. Why do you think our school administration is so archaic? Because most schools are managed by headmistresses with backward mentality who can’t hold more than two variables in their heads…. [deleted]

The word ‘Ma_lay’ in the link

The baby boy name Malay comes from the Indian word which means, “Unknown.” Sanskrit word which means, “Meaning of MALAY is slowly flowing wind..” Bengali word which means, “Breeze.”

    http://www.birthvillage.com/Name/Malay

Is that any further explanation we can find?

#21 Not so much on the word “Malay” but on the word “Melayu”! This word originates from the word “LAYU” meaning “wither”! So Melayu means “withering”!!! And they were so proud to shout “KETUANAN MELAYU”! What good is a Ketuanan that will “me-layu”?????
