Tun Dr. Lim Chong Eu 1919-2010 – Malaysia has lost last surviving giant of Merdeka era

With Tun Dr. Lim Chong Eu passing yesterday after a month-long stroke, Malaysia has lost the last surviving giant of the Merdeka era who became Penang’s longest-serving Chief Minister.

Malaysia and Penang have lost a great son.

Tun Dr. Lim’s contribution to Malaysian nation-building in general and the Penang state and economy in particular is acknowledged by all Malaysians.

Although we were opponents in the political and electoral arenas, I always have the highest respect and regard for Tun Dr. Lim’s political struggles and integrity.

My deepest condolence to the bereaved family particularly Toh Puan Goh Sing Yeng, Chien Aun and Chien Cheng.

    John Donne

DEATH be not proud, though some have called thee
Mighty and dreadful, for, thou art not so,
For, those, whom thou think’st, thou dost overthrow,
Die not, poor death, nor yet canst thou kill me.
From rest and sleep, which but thy pictures be,
Much pleasure, then from thee, much more must flow,
And soonest our best men with thee do go,
Rest of their bones, and souls deliver.
Thou art slave to Fate, Chance, kings, and desperate men,
And dost with poison, war, and sickness dwell,
And poppie, or charms can make us sleep as well,
    And better then thy stroke; why swell’st thou then;
One short sleep past, we wake eternally,
And death shall be no more; death, thou shalt die.

Without the good doctor..there may not be a Penang Bridge for a much longer time.
During his 21 years as CM for Penang….it was supporting your race out of no choice…as there was only DAP and no strong alternative like we have today….to replace the government.

Sejarah Malaysia seemed to have skipped over this man.

Who is Lim Chong Eu? And why is he even important to Malaysian history. Would somebody please write an article.

There are only a few chinese names that I know off which are recorded in Sejarah Malaysia KBSM. Zheng He, Ma Hung, Hang Li Po, Yap Ah Loy. Tan Cheng Lock and Lee Kuan Yew. And I can’t remember even one Indian name. Something is very wrong here.
