What’s wrong with non-Muslims quoting Quranic verses?

I read the following troubling Malaysiakini newsstory. It happened in Malaysia:

‘Belittling Islam’ – police report against DAP leader

by Jimadie Shah Othman | Apr 5, 09 11:52am | Malaysiakini

A police report has been filed against Perak DAP secretary Nga Kor Ming for allegedly belittling Islam during a ceramah in the campaign for Tuesday’s Bukit Gantang parliamentary by-election.

The report was filed by Malay Unity Action Front president Osman Abu Bakar at the Taiping district police headquarters this evening.

According to him, Nga – who is also the Taiping MP and Pantai Remis assemblyperson – made the disputed remarks during a ceramah in Changkat Jering two days ago, the contents of which were also published on Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim’s blog.

In his report, Osman accused the DAP leader of belittling Islam by reciting Quranic verses from the Surah Al-A’ raf for campaign purposes. Furthermore, he said the holy verses were recited improperly.

In view of this, Osman said he felt compelled to lodge a police report in his capacity as president of the Unity Front.

The activist was accompanied by some 15 supporters, some donning shirts bearing Barisan Nasional and Umno logos, to the police station.

I do not see anything wrong in a non-Muslim finding wisdom in Quranic verses; the message of Islam is universal.

I do not see anything wrong in Muslims quoting from the Bible, the Torah, the Bhagavad Gita, the Ramayana and Mahabharatta, the I Ch’ng, the Analects of Kung Fu Tze, or even from Marx’s Das Kapital.

No need for to lodge a police report on the DAP man who quoted the Quranic verses. It merely display our ignorance of the perspectives of others. We should be proud if we hear politicians finding wisdom from all religions and philosophical texts.

Embrace multiculturalism and learn from the wisdom of all scriptures. Universal values and timeless wisdom in all these texts.

We must grow up, read more, and grow old with timeless wisdom.

    finding wisdom
I think that’s a separate issue. The man’s police report accused Nga of ‘belittling’ Islam. Presumably, on the great scale of things, there are certain interpretations of ‘belittling’ that might cause you to see things less magnanimously?

Feel free to print my comment, draw penis shapes on it, wipe your backside with it, and set fire to it while saying that whoever wrote this comment must be a complete Kant (I grew up in Essex, for me it’s indistinguishable from the rude word unless I’m paying very close attention).

In a ‘free country’ you have to accept somebody might be upset by anything creative you might consider doing. Just because I don’t mind you doing terrible things to my comment, doesn’t mean somebody else might get upset by another person using their favourite book to market a political party. He must be allowed to complain.

What interest would it be to the police? Is there a specific ‘belittling Islam’ crime in Malaysia? If Nga is quoting from the Quran, it seems … ill advised to me. I sometimes try to tell my in-laws that they’re not really Chinese, but people can be easily upset about things they strongly believe are True.

I can utter any world religions quotations or faith sayings… out of Malaysia…no one cares….but infact praises you to be so knowledgeable.
Only in Malaysia…Koranic verses cannot be uttered by non believers…and these guys know next to nothing about other religions. They have been successfully brainwashed by UMNO and PAS.
I did quote from the Koran few years ago….and out come hordes of Muslim fanatics after my skin.
So sad…so many Malays are such illogical… clowns to the world.
And why not……UMNO ministers are well known clowns too.
They need to be…to cover up their corrupted personalities.
All these are play acting……so much so……hypocritical Muslims.. are produced by the thousands…by UMNO. How cruel can they be..for the sake of dirty politics….to stay in power….to be so filthy rich.

If quoting something positive from the quran is wrong, these morons must be real nuts. We all know that the quran contained so many racist verses which are influencing so many muslims to become terrorists all over the world and these morons should be proud if we can still find something positive in that quran. So what do you want us to view you UMNO morons – islamic extremists?

  4. #4 by isahbiazhar on Tuesday, 7 April 2009 - 5:06 am

It is a political move and it does not represent Islamic thoughts. The Quran can be quoted freely by anybody in any faith as the religion does not forbid it in any verse. Our Islamic minister should come out with a statement so that non Muslims will freely use the Quran.Regretfully this is one of the reasons that they opposed any interfaith dialogue. The presence of the Saudi royalty in an interfaith dialogue in Europe had shown the way.No protest was lodged by any Islamic or governmental organisation at that time.Perhaps those who had made police reports should by now be regretting their moves.Islam is universal and it fits the time including any elections in Malaysia.

That UNMOputras keep abusing the Islamic religion for political gains is known to many. I find a bit of consolation in this latest incident as it has become crystal clear to many, many of my friends to whom I keep telling to fear the Islam practised by UNMO Muslims rather than PAS.

Is this what Najib meant when he implored us to judge him by his actions?

PAS members……….P (practising) Muslims, UNMO members P (political) Muslims. Looks same, but they are NOT!!

    Greetings!

I’m not surprise such action by the UMNO running dog. This is because they have been breath and mislead from its original teaching ever they’d joint the party. I first came to know his when one of the UMNO members said non Muslim not allow to say: -“Assalamualaikum” . What’s wrong? Racist again and again…

  7. #7 by sotong on Tuesday, 7 April 2009 - 6:54 am

These are grossly misguided people…….thanks to decades BN’s narrow, divisive and damaging politics of religion.

The damages are permanent, long term and far reaching…there is no quick fix.

  8. #8 by vsp on Tuesday, 7 April 2009 - 7:00 am

Basically, it is an insidious attempt to hijack religion and Allah so that whatever UMNO does will always be seen to have the stamp of Allah’s authority. This development is dangerous not only to the non-Muslims but also to the Muslims themselves.

History has shown that whoever claimed God for themselves will finally turned out to be the oppressors of others. They began to ban this and that as if they are gods themselves. In the process things can be twisted to suit to their advantage. We have seen this been practiced more and more often in this country.

They have became the final arbiter of the truth, justice and other attributes of God. They have become so potent that they will deny justice and truth to others, whether you may be a non-Muslim or a Muslim. Mark my word, the dark age of religious bigotry of bygone era will reappear if everyone is not careful.

Open your eyes and see that what I have said on numerous occasion has not become the norm and practices of the UMNOputras.

Muslims, especially, open your eyes and don’t let these hypocrites hijack Allah for their own agendas. You might be the biggest losers.

Did allah said non-muslims cannot quote from the quran and if so, show us where it is said in the quran? Do these umno morons have the permission from allah to say so or they just simply interpret the quran. Do they know they have just committed apostasy by simply miss-interpreting their quran or putting words in allah’s mouth? Apostasy is a serious offense and the punishment is death.

Where is the religious department and why are they not out to charge these morons for apostasy?

Next time if you hear a Malay or Indian politician quoting a word from Confucius, file a police report! How ridiculous is that!!

This bunch of people just used every possible, and even impossible, means to attack PR, but the truth is they are degrading themselves and indeed showing their immaturity in various cases.

  13. #13 by taiking on Tuesday, 7 April 2009 - 8:48 am

Running out of ideas and getting really desparate. Like the umno sent cybertroppers here the only three ways to win over people’s heart and opinion known to them and actively pursued by them for the last half century are agitation, provocation and threats – none of which would work AT ALL. These methods are way way out of date and is in fact counter productive in the face of a more educated populace. Be more sophisticated in your approach pls. Be more conciliatory man. Be kinder. Be more understanding. Then again they are old dogs arent they? As a matter of fact a really old dog is re-joining the pack. So dont expect any new approach from umno.

UMNO goons are just interested to see everyone quoting from their false teachings of Islam…UMNO Quranic verses, denying the true message of Islam to be heard… simply to shield their impurities.
Obviously, the dark days are ahead of us when the ruling party uses scumbags, behaving like caretakers to inject their distorted version to deceive and gain political mileage.

  16. #16 by monsterball on Tuesday, 7 April 2009 - 8:56 am

yhsiew..They really are not interested for Chinese…Indians and other races to be Muslims. It is reserved only for Malays by an Almighty.. in Malaysia. That Almighty have spoken to them…and chose UMNO Malays .as his guardian angels…to protect it with their lives in for a place in Paradise.
Where is it…almighty have not reveal it yet..akang datang…….bulum sampai.
However…other races that marry an UMNO Muslim is soooo fortunate..to be converted automatically….assured a place in Paradise too..where??….your guess is as good as mine.
But…UMNO Muslims in Malaysia know where. They have clear visions. They are special human beings.
UMNO Muslims are around 3 million??
Talking big..protector of the Islamic faith..whereas 70 million Chinese Muslims living quietly….keeping far far away from these weird hypocrites with false titles..
Indonesia can boast of at least 200 million Muslims.
Not one have a false title!!
There you can see…how weird and hypocritical… UMNO Muslims are.
They say…stealing from others is not sinful……seems to have been written in the Koran.
They twisted the wisdom of Prophet Mohammad…saying.. stealing from their enemies is not a sin…to stealing from Malaysians…not a sin.

I am sure Allah himself would like as many people in the world to read and understand the quran. So is malaysia a democratic or a communist country?

For once, let our court decide the true color of “1Malaysia”

UMNOputras are becoming more and more of an extremist bunch of idiotic “KKK wanabe’ supremos.

If the court finds it is wrong, then I would only interpret it as “How low the understanding of Islam the true teaching of humility, by Umnoputras”.

Just to find some logic here. If those who lodge the police report are true defender of Islam the true teaching of humility, they should lodge a report on UMNO for being openly corrupted with “money politic” as Islam the true teaching of humility, forbids corruption and ill gotten wealth. ,…. maybe UMNO have another version of Quran where God the Almighty’s words of wisdom are replaced by C4s, hatred, killings, hefty commisions and making police reports.

Only Muslims in BN can use Quranic Verses. Only Muslim in BN can use the name Allah and nobody else. Even Christians are forbidden to use the name Allah though Christian and Muslim sharing the same origin.

Seem like Muslims in BN are so special compared to many of our Muslim friends. They don’t behave the same like BN. BN are special breed only in Malaysia.

I was once told what is said to be a true story about two Arab tourists who visited KL.
They became acquainted with a friendly local who impressed them with his command of the Arabic language.
After offering to show them the sights, this friendly local invited the two Arabs to follow him to a mosque for prayers.
However, the two Arabs politely declined and explained that they are actually of the Christian faith.
This local fellow expressed shock because he presumed that these Arabs are Muslims because they had used the same Arabic phrases as those he normally thought are only used by Muslims such as “God willing”.
I’ve also been told similar accounts where local Muslims (especially Arabic speaking ones) who had encountered non-Muslim Arab tourists, had thought that those Arabs are apostates…

How stupid these idiotic goons can they be. They actually do a big big disfavor to a good religion like Islam. Real hypocrites to the core.

    Ray…I disagree!
Islam is a wonderful great religion.
Just look at live TV in Mecca.
Have you ever seen one million pray with no class distinctions in any religion or faith followers?
There is nothing wrong with the Islamic religion.
The Torak and Angel are the same as Bible.
The Koran seems to be more purer to read as compared to the Bible.
Islam and Christains are from Abraham’s two sons…..Isaac and Ismeal.
Therefore…we can say…both branched out from the Jewish faith….the Johovah witnesses.
And like all religions or faiths believers..the so call holy men….priests…pastors….popes..imans..are the main cause of using religion for political reasons.
In Malaysia…UMNO uses it to control the minds of Malays.
Put that aside…all religions teaches good…..nothing bad.
It is again UMNO and PAS twisting the words to interpret as they like…to control minds….not free them.
I hope no one will belittle any religion..except the followers.

“Ia jelas mencabar kesucian Islam!” tokok seorang lagi.

Kami memang kaum minoriti.

Permintaan-permintaan begitu datang setiap hari.

“No man has authority to restrain the wind with the wind, or authority over the day of death.” [Ecclesiastes 8:8a]

    Bahkan saya berpandangan sebaliknya.

    KES NGA KOR MING

    16-90

Soalan tadi belum berjawab.

    Saya yakin, jawapannya mudah.

Sebaliknya Nga Kor Min patut didakwa kerana menghina ‘Muslim’.

If quranic verses are so holy as to only limit its recital to Muslims only, then why BLARE away quranic verses during Friday prayers through the loudspeakers on top of mosques? Wouldn’t non-muslims get to hear them and it is haram for non-muslims to even hear the quranic verses in the light of what has transpired. May I then suggest that the loudspeakers on top of mosques be silenced! And to imagine Malaysia calls itself a “free country” in so far as religion is concerned!

Jika mereka membaca ”iza JA a nas rullah”, mereka membacanya dengan ”iza GA a nas rullah”

Nope, each Azan is said at the precise timing of marking of solat time (not prayer -In Islam prayer is something u asked God or Doa but Solat is an obligation as u need to pay Toll on our halfway decent highways). Each time zone are marked by way before Seiko, Rolex or Rado invent watches which is the Sun since the dinosaurs time. To arranged before or after your favorite program can only be done if you could delay the earth rotation on its orbit. :-)

Well, talking about the islamic faith,I have several un-answers question and would appreciate any one especially from muslims who are expert in their faith.

    (1) Why is it okay for muslim to kill muslim ? Samples for reference in Parkistan, muslim sucide bomber killed dozens of fellow muslims near or in the mosque during friday prayer .Not one islamic country including malaysia ever come out to condemn it despite official claim by muslim group such as the Bin laden’s .Similarly in Iran and other islamic states, same kind of merciless killing happened, the rest of the whole muslim world remain dead silence as well.

    (2) But when the jews killed just one muslim, the whole muslim world including malaysia burst out furiously to condemn and yelled for revenge immidiately.

    (3) Isn’t this example shows islamic faith and it’s believers/followers are unrealistic, extremist, voilence, fanatic, terrorist and ungodly as well.

Not too long ago, Malaysian cinemas had shown this film called ‘Body Of Lies’.
In it, US actor Leonardo di Caprio potrayed an American CIA agent based in post-Saddam Hussein Baghdad who can speak Arabic quite fluently.
There were some scenes in this film where Leonardo had quoted verses from the Quran in front of certain Arabs.
If the Malay Unity Action Front president, Osman Abu Bakar, and his supporters are so concerned about non-Muslims quoting verses from the Quran being offensive to Muslims, why didn’t he and his group lobbied for the Censorship Board to ban ‘Body Of Lies’?
I understand that many Malaysian Muslims had seen this film, but there was no news of anyone of them complaining about it…

I believe it will be a great if the BN government could stop all non-Muslims not only from quoting the Quran but also stop non-Muslims from reading the Quran altogether. Then, there will be no non-Muslims converting to Islam. That will be good for non-Muslim communities as we can no longer hear cases of dead body snatching, baby snatching, property snatching, etc.

If BN can do that, then I will support BN instead of DAP which is collaborating with PAS. :D
