Nizar – PR candidate in Bukit Gantang by-election

Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohd Nizar Jamaluddin has been named as the Pakatan Rakyat candidate for the Bukit Gantang parliamentary by election which falls on 7th April 2009.

The battle for democracy in Perak and Malaysia is now full joined with Nizar the official standard bearer for Pakatan Rakyat in the by election.

This YB is a real surprise package when he was first picked by the Sultan of Perak and now HRH has to live with HIS choosing. Isn’t this act the WILL from upstairs??
When he was chosen, even his partner was surprised!! Now, he is definitely NOT A SURPRISE!! The result is foregone conclusion.

This is one of best move by PR.

With Nizar, we can really send PM-in-waiting a clear and loud message that he is not welcome!

Bravo to PAS, for this decision!

PR, this seat must be win with a margin like Teresa’s victory in Segambut. Then someone will know the rakyat meant business.

Ceramahs require police permits. That’s the law. So why is PR breaking the law after calling for the return to the rule of law??

This is sweet news after a week of dismal news coming from Pakatan, starting with DCM quitting in Penang, to the tear gas fired into Anwar ceramah tonight, clamping down on opposition newspapers and Mahathir crapping about Malays being threatened (again).

Najib can talk about winning back people’s confidence, but when UMNO mixes mere argument/spin with untamed abuse of power, it creates a police state far surpassing Mahathirism, making Najib more dangerous and reckless than Mahathir.

At least Bukit Gantang will be safe in opposition hand, but the idea is to give UMNO a KO meaning the federal opposition must win all three. It appears that while Batang Ai has been an unknown quality, the weak link is really Bkt Selambau. Anwar needs to do a better job explaining why he picked a lightweight, angering Hindraf and PKR leaders.

I think this is also a good time for the opposition to truly consolidate their position. If PKR loses, and PAS wins, the ultras within PAS is going to bay for a pound of flesh. But PAS must not forget that it is riding the tail wind of a combined victory of March 8, and don’t give in to temptation of going it alone again.

The coalition must be strengthened. It must also be that the leaders make a pack that they do not rely on any party to supply a certain number of qualified potential ministers. Seeing that PKR is the weak link, DAP should get to know PAS better. It’s not to kick out Anwar who is clearly still the standard bearer for Pakatan, but to give the rakyat assurance that where ther rank and file in PKR may falter, there are other ready substitutes. It would also make it a huge disincentive for PKR leaders to screw up.

May the Almaighty GOD bless Nizar with the greatest victory in the mother of all by-elections in Malaysian history!!

Thank you, PAS leaders, for making this wise decision. Nizar’s victory is victory for democarcy in Malaysia!

CHANGE WE (Malaysians) CAN BELIEVE IN.

If Nizar wins this one, it’s obvious that it’ll be a great blow to the legitimacy of UMNO-BN’s take-over of the Perak state govt. Therefore, PR must be cautious & be better stay focused here. Any controversy arising from the choice of the PR candidate in Bkt Selambau & the resignation of the P.Pinang 1st DCM must be dealt with a.s.a.p. to the satisfaction of the PR supporters and the people in general, so that UMNO-BN will not have chance to exploit these during the campaign period…

barisan cannot face the reality of popular dissent, so it confiscates the newspapers of PKR and PAS, now it banned them for 3 months, also the DAP chinese paper is still waiting for renewal of licence,

DSAI’s taiping ceramah declared illegal, and his ceramah at bukit selambau broken up using tear gas and chem-laced water,

by-election are on-going, so the opposition must be deprived of their voice, they can wait till the cows come home for their permit,

NR said massive reform imperative for umno, so this is it..

A law is only became the ‘real law’ when it is applicable to everyone.

Is the police always ‘pre-approve’ all Barisan Nasional’s Ceramah but do not give permit to PR’s ‘ceramah’ without sensible reason….. what law are they talking about? Jungle law?

When law applies only to the Opposition then it is abuse of the law. Just see how UMNO and BN have been breaking the law with impunity. See how is police force is being abused.

Did the police speak to the organizers or order them to disperse?
In any case, let the ceramah go on and charge them in court for the ‘illegal’ ceramah.

Every UMNO action is alienating the people from the government. Najib must realize that he is NOT Mahathir and he cannot pretend to be one and imitate him.

It looks like he is pushing the Opposition to do something stupid so that he can enforce emergency rule.

This is a smart move. It tells PR supporters that PR is realistic about its chances of the courts or the Sultan. By picking Nizar, it tells Perakian and PR supporters that he is going to be in the limelight for next 4 years at the end of which he will come back and lead PR back in Perak.

Zambry and BN is already screwed. Perakian at the end of 4 years will only feel that BN just delayed the inevitable and will even be mor angry at them. This is typically of Najib leadership being ultimately outfoxed and outstrategised by PR.

  36. #36 by StevePCH on Tuesday, 24 March 2009 - 12:01 pm

cintanegara & chengho , IMHO it appears that Nizar has a strong personality. Not swayed by the various unfair and untruthful accusations hurled at him. He stood by the basic principle that the constitution is above all.
It does not really matter for us ( the 54% Perakians and Malaysians ) whom had voted for changed to be robbed of a good Perak Government because, coming GE, we will be a true multiracially government country by PR, unlike the current PUPPET government of UMNO controlled BN.

shah pinang & pulau sibu :- Indians , Malays , Chinese and other races in Malaysia are like brothers to each other, you can see our muhibbah spirit whenever a disaster occur. When there is an accident, we never bother to see if the victim is Malay or Chinese , Muslim , Buddhist , hindu or whatever, we just help. When there is a fire, we try our best to help each other.

The Malay supremacy is just a racial card being played by BN to confuse all. Only cronies benefited from this ketuanan.

When Chinese education were deprived of government fund, the Chinese community support the schools through private donations, when non Bumis are unable to participate in government tenders, we excel in private sectors. Biasness only cause the community to be fitter just like in the case of Indians.
BN’s policies cause complacency in certain sectors of Malay communities and I strongly believe, it’s causing more harm that it is in helping Bumis.

DS Nizar is a good choice due to his strong popularity now. TG Nik is right in saying the current Perak MB should stand and fight his position but I believe, we need DS Nizar to be vocal in Parliament too.

  37. #37 by Jeffrey on Tuesday, 24 March 2009 - 12:14 pm

Mohd Nizar is chosen to contest the Bukit Gantang parliamentary seat in Perak because he is popular in Perak, it is an opportunity to give him a parliamentary seat and raise his national profile if he wins especially when chances of him prevailing in the claim that he is still Perak MB before the courts are remote. If he does not seize this opportunity, he may end up with nothing at both parliamentary and state levels.

It must have been a difficult decision – ie for PR to field him in Bukit Gantang.

Nik Aziz is alone among Pas leaders in opposing Nizar’s candidacy. It is not just the question of alienating Nik Aziz’s supporters by such a decision. Nik Aziz must have his reasons. He does not oppose without valid reasons or insights into such an issue.

Probably to Nik Aziz, the bigger picture is that Mohd Nizar’s contest of the Bukit Gantang parliamentary seat will be seen as inconsistent in principle with his – and Pakatan Rakyat’s – claim to legal (as distinct from moral) legitimacy that he is still the MB of Perak heading the PR majority state assemby, presently a subject for determination of the courts.

For it would be asked, at least in the courts, how Nizar could, if elected as MP for Bukit Gantang, could still be discharging his duties as Menteri Besar of Perak; that his actions in contesting the Bukit Gantang parliamentary seat imply that he is hedging his bets in Bukit Gantang ; that his claim to being still the validly appointed MB of Perak (in spite of the Sultan’s decision to the contrary) will be argued by Zamry and the 6 in the courts as something that Nizar himself does not believe sufficiently or deeply in to stick and stand by, a factor that will be taken into account by the court to support any decision to be made against Nizar/PR.

The argument will be presented against PR that in light of Nizar being fielded in Bukit Gantang, PR is not sincere or not right in its accusation of an illegal and unconstitutional grab for power by BN in Perak and that all the hullabloo of planting 5 saplings and a plaque to commemorate such an alleged grab is a farce and publicity stunt.

This is the downside that Nik Aziz may probably forsee.

As Allan Tham said, “This is high stake game” and if Nizar fails to win Bukit Gantang parliamentary seat, he will at the same time compromise his claim to the Perak Mentri Besar’s post.

In making the decision to field Nizar, it is as if PR is already resigned to not being able to re-claim the Perak State Government via the courts, and hence realistically the question of having something to lose in this respect does not arise since Perak has alrteady been lost!

Nizar as the candidate for the Bukit Gantang bye-election is a very good and logical choice. Having said that it is very difficult to accept DSAI’s choice of an unknown as Pakatan Rakyat’s candidate for Bukit Selambau. It is very difficult to comprehend the rationale behind the choice of a young, inexperienced and a new member of Pakatan Rakyat as the candidate for a crucial bye-election.

Since it is too late to put in a more credible candidate, in the larger interest of Pakatan Rakyat and the nation, every voter in Bukit Selambau should set aside their differences and vote for the Pakatan Rakyat candidate. If communal and partisan politics and the politics of selfishness, envy or downright vengeance is given room, it would be playing into the hands of UMNO/BN and the deadwood MIC.

The Hindraf supporters and others who are opposed to the candidate of DSAI’s choice should show their anger at Samy Velu and the MIC’s candidate. Show Samy Velu and MIC that the Indians have had enough of the lying, plundering, raping and above all being ETAPPANS, selling out the rights and privileges of Indians to the UMNOputras.

Samy Velu is the ETAPPAN who sold out the rights of the Indians in this country. Samy Velu and the MIC’s candidate should be made to lose very badly in the bye-election to send a strong message to MIC that they can NEVER regain the respect and support of the Indians.

The victory for Pakatan Rakyat in Bukit Selambau should send a strong message to UMNO/BN that the rakyat are fed up with the race and religious based divisive politics. The rakyat are fed up with the endemic corruption in the country.

The victory should show that people are NOT HAPPY with the way the various institutions of governance, the AG, Judiciary, Police, MACC, etc. are highjacked by the ruling UMNO/BN to cling on to power.

The writing on the wall is, “DO NOT TURN MALAYSIA INTO A POLICE STATE or another of the many African countries such as Zimbabwe.”

    undergrad2,

You are too green to teach some old birdies on the rule of law in this blog! If you are still staying in the United States now, then by looking at the degree of freedom which majority Americans enjoy, you should be able to find out what the “freedom of assembly” as promised by the Federal Constitution of Malaysia really means.

According to your standard, all Malaysians will have to succumb to the rule of law, including the draconian law. Let me tell you something: If I were the Prime Minister and I didn’t like you undergrad2 for being too outspoken in this blog, I might also invoke the ISA to detain you for a few years in the solitary confinement. By adopting your standard, I would not be illegal to detain you under the ISA because I could claim that I resorted to the rule of law.

Of course, when you were to become the ISA detainee when I were the Prime Minister, you would have the full political legitimacy to claim that I should be overthrown through a revolution like the French Revolution or 1911 Chinese Revolution.

Therefore, it is quite obvious that the rule of law is no season-proof panacea for the political disputes. In Christianity, the Christians are told to obey the authority because according to the bible, all authorities are being appointed by God in order to bring wrath upon the sinners. Nevertheless, the bible did not prohibit the overthrow of one devilish authority by another righteous authority, as this had been permitted when the initially God-appointed King Saul was being forced to commit suicide when he was almost suffocated by his enemy troops. As a result of not keeping God’s instructions, God took away Saul’s kingship (1 Samuel 13:14), through the appointment of another authority by vesting power in the hand of King David.

Besides the rule of law, there is also something called “revolution” in the world.

Err… not trying to start a religious argument but where did you hear such a thing? I thought it was more like, give to men what is due men and what is due God, to God…or something like that. Of course you cannot find Lilith in Genesis but you can find her in Isaiah. People like limkamput aka nincompoop (who spews a lot of poop) wants a woman to be docile and dependent. Lilith wasn’t. She was a feminist and so they (writers being male) had her replaced by Eve.

Najib wished Rosmah was more like Eve. But she’s really Lilith. Always wanting to be on top.

Q: What’s the difference between a space tourist and an astronaut?

A: A space tourist is a tourist who uses his own money whereas an astronaut is a tourist who uses his government’s money, e.g. Malaysia’s Sheikh Muzaphar. ///

k1980, I know you don’t mean it, but you should not taint all astronauts with the same brush. At least the US astronauts, the Russian Cosmonauts and the Chinese taikonauts are sent up there not to pull teh tarik and eat ketupat, but do real experiments and risk their lives. Spare a thought for Yuri Gagarin.

If you meant astronought – yes, agree with you 100%.

“In Christianity, the Christians are told to obey the authority because according to the bible, all authorities are being appointed by God” (Onlooker Politics)

“Err… not trying to start a religious argument but where did you hear such a thing?” (Katdog)

In order to answer the question of Katdog, I wish to quote at below the extract from a sermon entitled “Should Christians Submit to Government Authority?” written by David C. Pack.

    ….
Peter also gave important instruction about what God expects of Christians in their responsibility toward civil governments. He wrote, “Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the lord’s sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme; or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well. For so is the will of God, that with welldoing you may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men…Honor all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king” (I Pet. 2:13-15, 17).

“Submit yourselves”—this is what we should do. The term, “for the Lord’s sake,” clarifies that it is God who wishes us to submit to “every ordinance” of men’s governments.

Note that Peter did not state, “obey every ordinance.” Why? Because some laws are contrary to God’s direct instructions and cannot be obeyed. The following account from the book of Acts illustrates this important point. The apostles had been commanded by the authorities (4:16-18) to no longer preach anything about Christ—or to invoke His authority.

Here is how they responded: “But Peter and John answered and said unto them, Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge you” (vs. 19). The account continues in the next chapter, after the disciples had been arrested, imprisoned and called to account for disregarding the command to cease preaching Christ’s name. Acts 5:29 states, “Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, we ought to obey god rather than men.”

A conversation ensued. Gamaliel, a respected leader, urged the Council to stop further harassment of the apostles. The account continues, “And to him [Gamaliel] they agreed: and when they had called the apostles, and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go” (vs. 40). The apostles certainly submitted to the beating. Also, they did not lash out and hurl accusations and epithets of every conceivable kind against those who had so unjustly dealt with them. They willingly accepted the consequences of putting God’s way before the wrong-headed instructions of blinded men. They obeyed God rather than men.

In giving instructions for such circumstances, Paul wrote, “So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me” (Heb. 13:6). Should you ever be faced with the decision to “obey God rather than men,” keep this encouraging verse close to heart.

“Najib wished Rosmah was more like Eve. But she’s really Lilith. Always wanting to be on top.” (undergrad2)

    undergrad2,
It looks like you try to preach female dominating sexual life here.
However, whether Rosie is dominant or not in her bedroom is really none of my business. Like many other Malaysians, my main concern about the murder case is whether Altantuya is the Eve of Najib.

By the way, are you implying that Adam had two wives – Eve and Lilith? I think undergrad2 you are suggesting a very good excuse to Dr. Chua Soi Lek in order to explain off his sin and justify his extra-marital affair, which is against the rule of law in Malaysia! Do you also agree that our law shall be amended in order to legalise oral sex like what Singapore Parliament did in the law amendment?
