Selayang Municipal Council Dog Hunt Competition

Spate of outraged emails over Selayang Municipal Council’s insensitive competition, like this one from Grey: “This is an outrage! When the Americans all over the US and the world are condemming Michael Vicks for promoting animal cruelty by having dog fights, the Selayang council is actually giving cash prize up to RM15,000 to the rakyat for the capture of these creatures!!! That’s OUR Selayang council. Check out their website to find the offending annoucement.”

Here is another:

I bring to your attention the abovementioned matter.

It’s come to my attention via the Selayang Municipal Council’s website
(http://www.mps.gov.my/default01.htm) of this very attractive part-time “job”.

I would like to express my uttter disgust and am absolutely repulsed by this barbaric competition which is being held by the council. This competition is not only NOT solving the problem of strays in the area, in fact, I believe it is so easily-abused by greedy citizens. What’s going to stop strangers from stepping into someone’s home, abducting someone’s pet, removing the collar and pass it off as a stray?

The prizes offered are lucrative enough for many to steal in order to receive the top prize. RM15,000, RM13,000, RM11,000 for first, second and third prize respectively.

The Selayang Municipal Council is not only irresponsible, it is downright barbaric! Instead of offering the prize money as an incentive, a better way would be to use the money for spaying and neutering the strays. An even better solution would be to actually donate the money to its local SPCA or PAWS.

I plead to you and your organization to do the right thing and highlight this matter in all ways possible to stop this from taking place. In a country where a dog is deemed unclean by the majority of its citizens, it’s easy for the council to get away but each animal has a right to live and if it has to be put down, it has to be done in a most humane way possible.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
SiewYee

Reading about the MPS’s contest made me feel so angry and appalled that such a barbaric act could be condoned by the authorities. I signed the petition immediately and hope more people will be aware of this.

Why are only dogs targetted? Stray cats pose just as much trouble with their defecating and carrying of diseases. Mass neutering of all strays would be a much better way to spend that prize money.

Sadly, there are some bigotted individuals that do support the dog hunt, claiming that the stray dogs will attack children.

    http://almuslimin2.blogspot.com/2007/09/another-idiotic-group-that-support.html

I couldn’t help but notice most of those that are protesting and petitioning against the MPS are non-Muslims. What about the majority of Muslims? What are their thoughts? Do they also share the same feelings as that narrow-minded person…that dogs are as haram as pigs and should be killed cause it offends their religious sensitivities?

    Wow…this is outrageous!!!!!!!
Why dont they treat the cats the same??? Why do they have to be so selfish??? Just because they dont like dogs / pigs, they must get rid of them like this????!!
Why spend 100M to celebrate merdeka when there is no real merdeka for 30 odd percent of the population in this country! Some people can do whatever they please, some people live in oppression, even though all of them are citizens of the same country.
This country is getting more and more hopeless by the day.

All along we knew in the back of our minds that there are people holding public office that they will take the easy way out of any problem and this competition show that we are not wrong in suspecting so.

When one can’t even act humanly towards an animal, how in heaven’s name are such people going to be compassionate and humane at all?

The irony of the whole incident is that if one observes carefully the slogan on MPSJ web site, it reads, “Maju, Progresif, Sajehtera’. One thing i can say about them is that besides being inhumane and idiotic, they are a bunch of jokers too!

Now I am tempted to organize a “Catch A Corrupt Public Offical’ hunt too.

Don’t tell me they learnt this also on their “Belajar sambil pelancong” trip to Mauritius and South Africa trip last year. Last time it was to learn about how to clean toilets.

Will there be another “Study while Enjoy” trip this year at taxpayers expense? Maybe to Hong Kong, Taiwan or South Korea where dog meat are delicacies? While there, a detour to the Great Wall in China might be included as to how to build strong walls.

Maybe we can export our dogs to these countries and make some money for the Municipality? If monkeys can be exported now, why not dogs?

The Council like other civil servants and government departments are insensitive, shallow-minded, myopic, self-centred in their ways of conducting their duties.

Time and resources could be used for more productive business of the days.

Another of those many flip-flops by civil servants like the councils staff.

Ever wonder how Malaysia has come to such a state?

It is all due to the education systems. We are breeding idiots. Look around you. 60% of us are idiots with no ability to think or properly utilize this organ called brain.

It is a sad fact and the saddest part is things are going to become worse! Yes worse! Idiots will breed even more stupid people and eventually everyone will be shallow, barbaric, savage & plain stupid!

Ever wonder why violence is on the rise? It is because people have lost the ability to communicate effectively via words thus the use of bare knuckles.

Trust me things can only go worse from here. Unless we change the government and the education systems.

    Malaysia boleh kah? Mimpi lah.

Why? Why are we still supporting this useless government?

    Why?

Have we become so stupid that we are not able to see the bigger picture – that Malaysia is eroding, that crime is on the rise, that so-called leaders of ours are raping our money and resources?

    Why? Why oh why Malaysia?

    Wake up people!

It is time. It is now or never.

If we do not do something this coming election I can confidently say that is the end of our next generation!

Stoping being a fool and for once stand up and say “Tak Nak BN”

It is time we change! It is time we give a chance to other people to lead and advance this country!

    It is NOW!

Bull fights, dog fights and even cock fights! You see it’s all about a culture obsessed with gambling. It all starts on one lazy hot afternoon after school and after heavy rain when there’s nothing much to do but go out to catch ‘fighting fish’.

Malaysians are a bunch of pitiful people. We work like hell just to buy ourself a decent car and a comfy home. And life ends there!

While we are sweating and slogging like mad men, our so-called leaders are not helping us instead they are putting more weights on our shoulders.

    Why?

Petrol price Up! Toll Up! Electricity UP! Water Up! Car price UP!

    Why? Why?

Why is this government not helping the people yet the people keep voting for them? Why?

Have we really become so stupid?

Isnt the role of the goverment to help and make life easy for EVERYBODY?

    But no. Why? Why?

    IT’S TIME LADIES AND GENTLEMEN.

Why don’t someone organize one with double the prize money for killing cats. All the cats don’t have licence and are always straying around like those dogs without homes.
I think it is best for all the Selayang residents to keep the dog in the house most of the time and only let them out being accompanied.

“It is not about dogs or cats. It is about our mentality” – malaysia_mana_boleh correctly said.

There is a direct connection between the way we treat the animals and the type of society in which we live and the type of mentality of those making and enforcing rules affecting our lives.

Animals like dogs are sentient creatures, in the sense that they have sense feelings and they too like us can feel pain. They are God’s creatures (if you’re religious) or somewhat inextricably linked to us in the wider circle of Life (if you’re not particularly).

Except where they are manifestly fit and intended in the Food Chain to end up in our plate for our survival, they would be just as entitled a place in the world for those who value the sanctity of Life.

Until we could extend the circle of our compassion to the suffering of living things other than our species, we have not arrived, and it becomes doubtful that we could even treat our own species with decency, dignity and respect

There will come a day when we finally have to admit that there is no possible way to unite all races as purely Malaysian because there are more elements that are determine to tear us apart and at this very moment, we are coming close to that day. And after that day, let us hope Malaysian of all races will finally found a common destiny and build our nation on that basis thereafter. Now, who is willing to compromise on what you eat and what animal you are keeping as pet? Why are dogs and pigs the target of this barbaric UMNO?

  52. #52 by takazawa on Friday, 7 September 2007 - 2:28 am

It’s all due to their arcane mindset which dates back to the Old Testament (on which the Qur’an is mostly based) whereby dogs and pigs were treated with contempt. Even during the New Testament era, Jesus said in Matthew 7:6

“Do not give what is holy to dogs; and do not throw your pearls before swines, or they will trample them under foot and turn and maul you.”

Of course, these words of Jesus are metaphorical and not to be taken literally. It’s only the superficial Muslims (especially the barbaric UMNO) who always interpret Scriptures out of context and twist them according to their whim and fancy. The “dogs” and “swine” here stand for people who are unappreciative and worldly; unappreciative and uncaring men and women who belittle the value of what is offered to them. “That which is holy” would be the meat offered in sacrifice to God. A dog could care less whether it came from the altar or the garbage. The swines have no appreciation for either the beauty nor the value of the pearls under their feet.

competition is organised by people in authority.Yes these people from the Selayan Municipal Council are sick people. They don’t seem to know that animals have also a right to life and they also deserve to be treated kindly.
The way a nation treats its animals reflects how civilised that nation is.All religions propagate that animals are also God’s creatures and the raison d’etre for many vegetarians rejecting meat stems from this fact.
Sleeping prime ministerhas proclaimed to the world about this country adopting Islam Hadhari in its practice.Yet the world has come to know about this country being one of the top nation carrying out human trafficking and if this dog competition thing is not put to a stop Malaysia can also be portrayed as a country where animal cruelty is rampant.Mr. PM shame on you for allowing this to happen.

Devilmaster has made some observations about the Muslim practice of not eating pork. Doesn’t he know that certain Christians and all Jews and all Muslims do not consume pork? Not all Christians consume pork. God forbade the eating of unclean animals – pig is one of the unclean animals.

You can find this in Deutoronomy 14 in the Old Testament.

God forbade the Israelites, God’s chosen people, from consuming pork because they might catch diseases. But that was before the age of refrigeration etc. There is no mention of that under the New Testament. Muslims like the Jews follow the Old Testament.

Well, it takes all kinds, s you know, some Chinese eat dogs; dog production for eating has in China been a cottage industry; dog meat is considered by some as a source of meat for specific medicinal benefits attributed to various parts of a dog and as it keeps body warm during winter, is also eaten in Siberia, Alaska, northern Canada, and Greenland! Vietnamese too took after the Chinese with many believing that Dog meat is supposed to raise the libido but as always whilst considered suitable for males, is not for women. Years ago, I’ve seen people people eating monkeys’ brains – supposed to make them intelligent! Talking about cruelty, the poor monkey had its ‘shaved’ head inserted through a hole in the middle of the table, and these connoisures took a small hammer and banged its head (whilst it was still alive), cracked its skull and mixed alchohol with the brain before dipping their spoons into it – yuk! If you think that strange, ask Undergrad2 whether or not its true that there are restaurants in New York that serve “exotic” foods, like worms, crickets, scorpions, tarantulas, maggots, and ants. :)

  61. #61 by Jeffrey on Friday, 7 September 2007 - 8:02 am

Dogs are viewed as man’s best friend, so its perhaps considered cruel and barbaric to mistreat or eat them. But what about eating silk worms (normally reared for silk) and all kinds of other worms, rabbits, turtles, scorpions, cockroaches, ants – is that cruelty to animals? Even in the case of normal diet – fish – when I was in Beijing, they’ve got this fish which they wrapped a wet cloth around its head and dipped the whole body into boiling oil and when it was served on the plate with its body fried golden brown, its head appeared still alive with the gills and mouth moving…, I asked them if it was not cruel, and they replied that fish was not sentient ie had no nerves to feel pain – just like crustaceans eg shrimps that, in Chinese restaurants, are sometimes served by being poured live into a hot pan of boiling oil before the customers. I asked them that if they were not fish or shrimps how would they know that they felt no pain. Cruelty or otherwise is also relative to culture – and religious practices. The method of animal slaughter used by Jews and Muslims to ensure Kosher and Halal meat respectively appall the animal rights groups : it is a single cut to the throat for the cow rather than the more widespread method of stunning with a bolt into the head before slaughter. You’d recall some backbenchers slaughtered six cows and ten goats in the compound of our august Parliament House on July 10 this year, just to celebrate the recent wedding of Pak Lah and Jeanne Abdullah! Do you know how hooded Islamic terrorists in Iraq sometimes kill their hostages in halal way? The victims were placed facing a certain specific direction, had their throats slit by a single cut, they take several minutes to bleed to death!

Because i don’t want to see my money being abused this BN government.

I thought the year of the Dog was over when we celebrated Chinese New Year in early 2006? In the year of the Dog, they destroyed dogs to the extent of trespassing into home to shoot them. That was one big issue then. Today in 2007, the year of the Pig, the pig became their targets of destruction. Pig farmers in Melaka is facing one of the worst dilemmas of all times. The state-wide operation is targeted at destroying and eliminating pig-farming in the state. If this is successful, operations will spread to other states in Malaysia. This would mean pork would become a rare delicacy for the Chinese in Malaysia.

Is all these aimed at making Malaysia an Islamic nation? UMNO has been declaring Malaysia as an Islamic nation but are they not the least bit ashamed of themselves? How can there be PAS, a political party whose ideology is totally Islamic be an opposition to an Islamic nation? Is the Islam practised by UMNO “more Islamic” than PAS? What about the other non-Islamic political parties in BN? Why are they still in the government which claims to run an Islamic nation? Do they know the least bit about Islamic law? Do they know how to run an Islamic nation or parliament? Are these people “halal” in all respects according to Islam? Have they been “sunat”? If they do not comply to any one of these terms and conditions, they cannot be considered part of an Islamic government and they should immediately “get out”.

I’ve said it before and would again that the problem of “mentality” in the civil service and municipal authorities (the positions in which are by appointments and not election) could be ameliorated only if the government sumons the political will to make it a point to impose a racial quota (say, 55% Malays, 25% Chinese 12% Indians with balance for others) to ensure a multiracial mix in these places reflective of that existing in wider socierty. It is through mixing in the work place with people of different races that people become more tolerant and sensitive to others’ different outlook, values and culture, and when they make and enforce rules affecting our lives, they would be skewed and tunnel visioned.

    Dear all,

A lot of the stray dogs are nuisance and pose dangers to children. My daughter was nearly bitten by a couple of stray dogs if I did not get to the site on time. Just that the method used by the council to reduce these dogs are wrong. They should just do the work themselves rather than giving rewards for people to do it. What are we paying income tax, cukai pintu, cukai tanah for?

This can’t get any sicker. Now they promote hunting. How cruel can these people get. Are dogs game? They do this without realising that this can cause fights to break out amongst neighbours and even friends if people are desperate enough for money. They are trying to make the non-muslims a laughing stock in this country. Why pay RM100 mil to celebrate Merdeka when we have so many non-patriotic citizens around. Can we now hunt them down like dogs, too?

This is the direct consequence of decades of grossly narrow and damaging politics of race and religion.

Enormous damage had been done to the country and there is no quick fix…..but an alternative government or major reform implemented by the existing government is urgently required to at least control its damaging, permanent and far reaching impact it might have on the country.

The government cannot continue to mislead the ordinary people with their narrow, short term and damaging politics to retain power at all costs…….the country and her ordinary people will be the ultimate victims.

It is long overdue for the government and politicians to act and behave with responsibility and accountability and an opened mind with tolerance and sensitivity in a multi racial and religious society.

Somewhere along the line, I read that the best judge of a country is how its animals are treated.
Like many young kids then, I used to be fascinated by birds esp the spotted neck doves, fighting fish and rhinocerous beetles. They were hunted down and kept as pets and souvenirs.
But now I have lost all such inclinations. I could never imagine then that I could be so blessed as to be surrounded by such birds and animals in my later life. Nowadays, I am awaken by cries of croo coo coos of the spotted neck doves living in abundance in the neighbourhood. Yes, you guess it………….I am no longer living in Malaysia but somewhere in urban Australia.
BTW, dogs here are treated much better by the authorities than many citizens and guests of Malaysia by your gomen.

Let’s start with the political running dogs!

  76. #76 by pwcheng on Friday, 7 September 2007 - 11:52 am

With due respect to all the fellow bloggers, lets confine to the topic of cruelty to animals and in this case the poor dogs and do not deviate into the substance of religion and some had over done it. Lets respect each others religion and their believe, their practices and taboos. We should not be unduly sensitive and fall into their trap, just like the incident of Jesus holding a cigarette and a can of beer. We had fallen into their trap by getting the paper banned, maybe with thanks to a political party of BN. I think it is silly to fall into such traps as we are now singing their songs and it will make them very happy as they can now say “you see, what we are doing is not wrong, your religion is also the same”.

All these mockery are the doing of the government, specifically UMNO directly or indirectly, and nothing to do with the Muslim religion as a whole. UMNO has been trying very hard to be holier than thou since PAS captured Kelantan and Trengganu in the 90s and I can see all these are the spin offs of UMNO’s “holier than thou” campaign. UMNO had been exploiting Islam to the hilt for their political mileage among the Malays and hence to the non-Malays they now have an automatic perception that is Islam that is giving all these problems even though the linkage with Islam is very weak.

To me it is definitely NOT Islam but UMNO that is giving all these problems. If they can slaughter goats and cows in front of the August House, it indicates that they will do anything to enhance their religious image, not caring whether that is a proper place, or will it offend the sensitivities of other races.

Please do not blame Islam or the Muslim on all these happenings. It is the present set of leaders from UMNO (albeit not all of them) that is setting this dangerous trend. I think many of our moderate Muslim brothers are aware of these and hope that they can help to make a change for the good of everybody.

  77. #77 by tiban on Friday, 7 September 2007 - 12:02 pm

The mentality of the Municipal Council particularly on this issue reflect what the Middle-Age Europeans did during the Witch-hunt madness hundreds of years ago.

It is so similar where one can see how fear and anger is being promoted instead of identifying the root cause. Back in the Middle-Age, plague pandemic were made to believe that it was work of whitchcraft and therefore many innocent women were executed.

In this case, i don’t see any difference, you have the element of fear, reward and the victim (dogs). What a primitive approach that is!!!

The Municipal should use the resource, funding and above all the mass of neuron cell up in their head to identify the root cause. And i think we don’t need an expert flewn in from US or Europe to find it.

From where does the wild dogs come from anyway? Definitely not from the jungle for abvious reason! These animals are actually the product of the poorly managed environment. Animals as what they are created to do, multply provided food is available. So, the focus should be at the food source these animal feed on. Uncollected garbage, open dumpsite and unmanaged waste from markets is a haven for these dogs.

If MPS keep these area clean and enforce the existing regulations, we will not see all these issue happening. So, instead of asking citizen to do their work, i think they should stop and rethink what is actual issue in-hand.

The person in the mirror has to ask himself/herself to rationally review MPSelayang’s conduct.

The district has a problem. There are too many stray animals both dogs & cats.

People in the mirror do not take basic responsible pet ownership behaviour. Their animals are not spayed. Some people even have backyard pet farms where they breed various dogs or cats.

I have seen a particular family who breeds the same 2 sets of female dogs every year. The puppies were decent 2 years ago. Last month, I saw the Dalmation mum, and she looks so pathetic. I asked the wife of the owner who I later found out was the instigator of the breeding program to refrain this season (and let the dog rest). But she disagrees. Says that her neighbor has had children every year, cant see why the dog cannot do so.

But I would like MPS to extend this dog catching to also include Cats. Please dont misunderstand me, i like both dogs & cats. I even reared a kitten & a puppy together. They shared the same water dish, and the kitten even bullied the puppy for food.

But some people have more than 2 cats, and this should be banned. Just as terraced houses are restricted to one dog, I believe the same should be applied to cats. 1 cat &/or 1 dog per household. No 3 or 5 cats per home.

Responsible pet ownership please. Now how do I go about trapping cats? There are 3 cats that come to my house. On cold days they sleep on my car hood, and scratch it when they wake up. I have had to repaint my car white, and my wife’s silver so that u cant see the scratches.

They also use my garden as their “toilet”. It stinks, really stinks. I have to remove the lawn in that area, sprayed “Baygon” and basically make life difficult for these cats. Yet they still come and stare at me as though I m disrupting their “Ketuanan” over my house & property. Pity the cops wont give me a license for a rifle. (I should ask that FRU chap from Terengganu to stay a few days in my house). Would love to have a rifle with a scope, so that I can take out these cats… (and hang their carcasses Japanese Kempetai style to ward off cat owners & other cats).

So MPS and Subang Jaya, when will you extend ur draconian regulations to cats. I cannot wait & dont forget I m a rate payer. Probably pay my rates regularly unlike some of these cat owners…

I thought the year of the Dog ended early this year with the celebration of the year of the Pig? They shot dogs in the year of the Dog, remember? They even do so inside commoners’ houses. This year, in the year of the Pig, they turn to shooting pigs. Then will they start shooting rats in the year of the Rat next year? Shoot cows in the year of the Ox? Shoot tigers in the year or the Tiger, etc?

Talking about shooting cows, I would like to comment on the way cows are being killed openly in fields during Hari Raya Haji. If cows can be killed this way, can pigs be done the same too? What if the Chinese start to tie pigs to trees in the open fields and kill them publicly? They are still animals, right? We are still humans, right? So what difference does it make if a Malay kills a cow publicly during Hari Raya Haji and a Chinese kills a pig publicly during Chinese New Year?

Well then, there are actually Muslims against the competition as well, this is because the chaos that carry from the competition will make everyone living uncomfortably.

Wow, i saw many comments are racist based. The thing is don’t you all know that thee is a Association call Anti-Dog Association at Selayang? The chairman is a Chinese man, i forgot whats his name and, the association is a form by a group of Muslim.. They were even article bout them at Sin Chew last time, and the chairman are so darn proud of himself!!

The thing is, animal rights and love and care should be spread regardless what race and religion the person is. Thus, big question here is humanity instead of religion issue.

It’s clearly that MPS do not have hearts to resolves the problem humanely, and thing does shocks me is where they get the money from??????

Are they wasting people’s money to held such competition? MPS thought that “ini lah cara yang paling senang tuk selesaikan masalah ni..” , but.., Don’t they know that, spay and neautered is alot cheaper? And SPCA and others animal welfare groups are even willing to help for free…

MPS know people will go crazy and do anything for money, thats why, it stated terms like they won’t be responsible of any injuries of the participants..

    It’s wrong.., totally.., wrong indeed..

I dunno why, it seems likes race issue happens one after another before the election comes.. First, namewee’s case, then, the pig farmer issues, and now this?? Wow, they really want we all vote for DAP then.., and they will have it for sure, as their wish..
