Samy Vellu “Champion of Indians” for RM500,000

Congrats, Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu, for the being bestowed “Wira Kaum India” (Champion of Indians) by Indian Progressive Front (IPF) President Tan Sri M.G. Pandithan at the IPF general assembly where the MIC President announced a RM500,000 grant towards the construction of IPF headquarters in Serdang.

It is reported that IPF still owes close to RM800,000 on the RM5 million building.

As Samy Vellu had been the sole obstacle to IPF’s long-standing application to join Barisan Nasional, will the MIC President now giving his blessing to IPF’s entry into BN following his rapprochement with Pandithan?

The Star carries an interesting account of the Pandithan-Samy Vellu feud and rapprochement –

Friends forever — Pandithan and Samy

By A. LETCHUMANAN

KUALA LUMPUR: Once good friends, they became bitter political rivals. Yesterday, MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu and IPF president Tan Sri M.G. Pandithan announced their undying relationship in front of 3,000 IPF delegates.

They hugged with tears in their eyes. The delegates burst into applause.

“Once we were friends, then we separated and now we have rejoined. This friendship is permanent and there is no departure. I will only depart at my death,” said Pandithan.

He said the MIC supremo was the “true leader of the Indian community” and bestowed the Wira Kaum India title on Samy Vellu at IPF’s 15th general assembly.

Samy Vellu turned poetic when describing the respect Pandithan enjoyed among his followers.
Pandithan, who once regarded Samy Vellu as his mentor, was an MIC vice-president, Tapah MP and parliamentary secretary to the Trade and Industry Ministry in June 1988.

He was sacked after he started a fast-to-death effort in a bid to get charges of inciting violence and unrest within the party dropped. He also brought a coffin to the MIC headquarters in protest.

After expulsion from MIC on July 16, 1988, Pandithan tried to return to the party but was unsuccessful and in August 1990, he formed IPF.

His several attempts to join Barisan were thwarted by Samy Vellu and his scathing attacks on the MIC president failed to make headway.

However, when Pandithan fell ill and was hospitalised last year, Samy Vellu visited him and the two fell into an emotional reunion.

Wira kaum India ? The poor sods were thrown the smallest crumbs by UMNO. They had much smaller crumbs than those thrown to the MCA. And good ol’ Semi Value even took the crumbs away from the Indians.

    Godfather:

If what you say is true, ” being thrown the smallest crumbs” then I think Forbes is wrong to list Ananda Krishnan as the 2nd richest Msian. And that AirAsia dude, Tony Fernandes? G Gnalingam? Kasi Palaniappan? Vinod Sekhar?

Hmmm …. out of 40 richest Msians, 26 are chinese, 5 indians … I guess Malaysia is still not good enough for some.

Well IPF is a poor political party and RM500,00 means a lot to them. So he has to give him a title, just like paying RM100,000-RM200,000 for a Datukship title. So at the end of the day it is money that is doing the work, not the person.

    RealWorld:

You have been supporting the thieves for far too long. The richest in Malaysia are where there are in spite of the system, not because of it. Guys like Robert Kouk, Quek Leng Chan, Ananda are there in spite of the obstacles that UMNO throws at them. You want to talk about Tony Fernandez ? He is the face of AirAsia, but do you know the entourage of UMNOputras who are tagging along for the ride ?

Semi Value gets the crumbs while your people like Daim, Tajuddin, Nasimuddin, Syed Azman, Syed Mokhtar all get to eat at the main table.

Don’t defend the thieves. If you are satisfied with the crumbs they throw to you, just say so, and continue to vote the thieves into power. Like you said before, the majority will always have their say.

who is IPF to give this title? Please lah

    Realworld,

I think you should ask UMNO to pass a law that will take away all the riches from those top 40 and pass it to the top 40 malays. That will be fair, easy way to the top.Screw hardwork and meritocracy. Lets forget about all those poor Malay, Chinese, Indians, kadazans, Ibans etc. Just focus on the top 40 cos that shows the non malays are all rich. Good way to go man.

  9. #9 by JusticeII on Monday, 2 July 2007 - 11:42 am

How shallow it is to define that non-malays are richer than malays just because out of the 40, 26 are chinese and 5 are indians. Most Chinese and Indians achieve what they have through their own hardwork !

I cant understand why majority of the Indian community are blind towards the evils that SV has committed. They will even worship the sound of his fart.

  10. #10 by ethnicmalaysian on Monday, 2 July 2007 - 11:46 am

It is interesting how the list of 40 richest Malaysians have often being used by RealWorld and their ilk to illustrate how very fortunate and far ahead the Chinese and Indian communities are compared to the Malays by virtue of the number of Chinese and Indian tycoons that are on that list. And this is then used to justify the continued need for the NEP and ‘affirmative’ action. This is flawed reasoning as explained below.

    1. The fact that there are for example, 5 Indian tycoons on that list does not detract from the overwhelming evidence that the Indian community has been severely marginalised in the last few decades and has not successfully broken the vicious cycle of poverty, crime and deprivation.

    2. The tycoons on that list more often than not (with exceptions of course such as Tony Fernandez who have succeeded against huge odds) have benefitted from the croniysm and nepotism that has been so rampant in the last few decades of rapid economic growth that the gap between the rich and the poor in Malaysia has deteriorated significantly and is now among the worst in the world. So that list is actually an implicit indictment of the failure to bridge that gap rather than indicative that the Chinese and Indians are much better off.

    3. Lastly, the list is for rich business people and entreprenuers which have measurable indicators of their wealth such as the market capitalization of the companies they own that are publicly listed. If there is a list of very very rich Malaysian politicians, cabinet ministers, govt officials, private beneficiaries of APs, then you may find a more reflective representation of the racial composition of this country. But alas, that list may never ever see the light of day.

“Wira” means “hero”. “Champion” is “Johan”.

So Sammy has just been awarded the “title” “Hero of the Indians”.

    Pssst, Pandithan.

For the rest of the money, RM 300,000, you can promise the “Hero” that you will build a life-size statue of this “Hero” and place it in front of your building. And daily, the crows and pidgeons can pay “homage” to him.

  12. #12 by lucia on Monday, 2 July 2007 - 12:48 pm

the minute i saw “samy vellu, champion of indians”, i laughed out loud. champion of indians indeed! what a joke! a big joke! well since it was IPF that gave the title, then it should be ‘champion of IPF’ lah.

btw, good one, sheriff singh. agree with you.

The value of friendship is measured with how much money Semi can dish out.

Though they remain as friemds, I dont see how one can suddenly turn a blind eye to the sufferings of Indians and the cause he has championed all these while be forgotten.

Now I’ll tell you why our Samy is a hero. Remember the chums who, in their MIC meetings, used to shout at the top of their voices and throw chairs at each other? Indians had a very bad name then (Keling suka bising, suka buang kerusi). Our hero was the one who gave us back some dignity. The other races are the ones in the limelight now. Let the guy who has not given favours to cronies (when he had power to do so) cast the first stone against my hero. As for that arc-bridge of artificial hair over his head, and his constant faux-pas (e.g. ramai pemuda-pemudi Malaysia suka derma dara), I make no comment.

It’s a truism that the rich, powerful and influential are always worshipped.
It doesn’t matter how they acquire their wealth!
That’s why even embezzlers, when they have served their jail sentences, can flaunt their riches and are just as hero worshipped as any other rich person.
Nowadays, people worship money, not character!

    Money talks loud in Malaysia.
All of us are bonded with a large amount of monies through our commitments for the family.
In the case of IPF, they have been going around town with the same team that once ‘kicked out’ from MIC. These old members are ageing now and things of the past should be ‘wipened clean’ again.
Anyway, that’s life … whatever we do .. we still need to go one day.

At every UMNO general assembly, some smart alec from Oxford or Cambridge will bring up the Forbes list, and demand why from a list of 40 richest, only 9 are bumiputras. They will whip up a frenzy with a delegates and demand that the country creates at least 65 billionaires out of every 100 from Bodohland. OK, so how do we create these billionaires ? Give them licence to print money. Let them take over some public facilities, expand them, and extract tolls from the rakyat. Oh, better still, give them property at suppressed prices, then force a sale to a GLC at inflated prices. Let them be middlemen on government contracts and allow them to collect a commission – not from the Malaysian side, but make sure the commission gets paid from the foreign side.

Make sure the NEP lasts as long as possible until 65 pct of billionaires are bumiputras. When the Chinese and the Indians complain, show them the Forbes list and tell them to be grateful and tell them it’s only fair 65 pct of the richest must be bumiputras.
After all, this is Malay-land, not Chinese land or India land.

Someone please enlighten me. If Samy Value is not helping the Indians, why are the Indians still voting for him??? He has been (and still is) in power for as long as, I’m sorry, longer than TDM has been for UMNO. As far as I’m concerned, he should have been kicked out a long, long time ago. Has he been giving “toddy money” to garner more support?

What I enjoy most reading this blog is the passion shown when it comes to Samy Bulu bashing:

“I cant understand why majority of the Indian community are blind towards the evils that SV has committed. They will even worship the sound of his fart.”

“Wira kaum India ? The poor sods were thrown the smallest crumbs by UMNO. ”

Now does not this suggest that Indians are opportunists and ahead of the mob is Samy Bulu??

  24. #24 by Godfather on Monday, 2 July 2007 - 5:28 pm

The Indians are severely marginalised because there is no champion of their rights outside of BN. Maybe with the exception of DAP, but they are actually seen as more of a Chinese-based party.

There is no such thing as an Indian majority seat or a seat where the Indian vote will make a difference between success and failure for the BN candidate. So UMNO marginalises the Indians, and throw crumbs to them. These crumbs, supposedly for the Indians, get picked up by Semi Value. In other instances, Semi Value tells UMNO he will be responsible for distributing the crumbs, which of course he seldom does once he gets his hands on the crumbs.

I suspect this hugging and tearing is part of an Indian movie meant for an Indian populace.

I can’t understand why Samy Vellu is basking in the glory of the occasion. I always thought Samy Vellu is more suited for the part of the bandit and villain in Indian movies. He Plays such evil roles superbly. Is it because he has plenty of practice and plays such roles to perfection in real life? A Dracula Oscar for Samy, anyone?

When UMNO leaders defended the continuation of NEP, they say that they were poor Malays in the rural areas.

Now they say that out of the 40 richest Malaysians, the majority are not Malays. Does NEP say that it is to produce richest Malays? Does anybody need to be richest among the 26 million to live a comfortable life? If these were the intention of the government, then NEP has obviously been misused. And who would be the potential candidates for the richest among the Malays? They can’t be the rural Malays.

The poison left by TDM in his declaration that ‘NEP would have succeeded if he could make one Malay millionaire through NEP”. He might have been correct if the Malay millionaire he referred to made the money on its own ability, without using connections or licences from government regulations. But TDM obviously meant that money should be made through transferring what ought to be in public coffers to private hands. That declaration by the Malay champion silenced any Malays who dared to question the use of corrupt means to enrich Malays of TDM’s choice. He could even choose his relatives afterall they were also Malays, at least based on article 160(2). The clear examples was the AP scheme, which was established under NEP to help Malays become rich. The wealth rendered by AP scheme allowed hundreds of AP beneficiaries initially, and now perhaps in tens become multimillionaires, making the millions of car owners slave to pay higher price on their motor vehicles.

Malays who suffered at the hands of APs scheme can only complain privately, if they dare to withstand the criticism for not being loyal to UMNO. They have still kept UMNO returning to power. Are we to believe that the love they have for the Malay race make them willingly suffer at APs scheme, just so that tens of them become multimillionaires? Thus, they would even be willing to suffer more pains to make more Malays among the richest 40 in the country; or how else can they reach that position?

The Malays other than the UMNOputras as well as the non-Malays are experiencing a lower standard of living because of NEP. NEP have even made the ordinary Malays who are not even millionaires to be jealous of the Chinese who were the richest in the countries. But curiously, the ordinary non-millionaire Malays seems to accept other Malays who becoming billionaires, and to be among the richest even at their expense. It shows that UMNO has perfected the art of brain washing the Malays into believing that the ‘success’ of any Malay is their pride, and the party is their saviour. Or was it the Malays have a different psychological makeup, one wonders!

    Some corrections.

Firstly, Ananda Krishnan is Ceylonese(from Sri Lanka) and Tony Fernandes is Portugese mixed. They are not Indians and are not affliiated to MIC in anyway.

Secondly, MIC is for Tamils and the rest of the Indians i.e Malayalee, Gujerati, Sindhi, Punjabi, Telugu, Bengali, Goanese etc have no affiliation to MIC. These indians are self-sufficent and have their own associations i.e not political parties.

Thirdly, it should be Mollywood(Chennai) and not Bollywood(Mumbai).

Therefore, to call him ‘wira kaum india’ is grossly inaccurate.
