16-Day Countdown to 13GE Polling Day: DAP use of PAS and PKR symbols in 13GE – a disaster in-the-making or a game changer that will propel Pakatan Rakyat to Putrajaya?

April 18, 2013 had been the most heart-rending day in my life, the day when the Registrar of Societies dispatched a letter to the DAP to knock out the Rocket symbol from the 13GE, with the Nomination Day less than 48 hours away, completely without any legal basis or plausible ground.

I was not the only one to shed tears yesterday as all over the country, many DAP stalwarts and supporters who are Malaysian patriots whose home and sole object of loyalty is Malaysia and do not know or recognize another country as their motherland, also cried at the injustice, oppression and iniquity of the ROS action , clearly at the behest of the political masters in UMNO/Barisan Nasional.

For 47 years, DAP had waged a patriotic, nationalistic but uphill battle to build a united, multiracial, just and democratic Malaysian nation with many leaders like Dr. Chen Man Hin, Ahmad Nor, P. Patto, Ibrahim Singgeh, Fadzlan Yahya, Peter Dason, Lau Dak Kee, Lim Cho Hock, V. David, Karpal Singh, Datuk Chian Heng Kai, Chan Kok Kit, Dr Tan Seng Giaw, Lim Guan Eng, Tan Kok Wai, Teresa Kok, paying a heavy personal price in their love, patriotism and loyalty to Malaysia, including losing their personal liberties enduring detention under the Internal Security Act, imprisonment and disqualification as MP and disenfranchisement of their civil rights such as the right to vote and to stand for elections for a period of time.

DAP leaders and supporters have a different vision for Malaysia from those of the UMNO/Barisan Nasional leaders, (and the greatest difference is whether Malaysia should continue to practise the exclusive politics of race or should begin an inclusive politics for all Malaysians regardless of race, religion or region) but their love, loyalty and patriotism for Malaysia cannot be questioned, and it is a great test of the maturity of Malaysian nation-building and democracy whether there is room and space in the country’s political process for dissent and diversity of views without equating them with disloyalty, anti-national activities or even treason.

The ROS action, on the directive of the political masters in Putrajaya, to knock out the Rocket symbol from the 13GE is the most dastardly, oppressive, undemocratic and dishonourable acts of the 56-year Umno/Barisan Nasional rule, an act no Malay gentleman-political leaders like Dato’ Onn Jaffar, Tun Hussein Onn, Tunku Abdul Rahman, Tun Ismail, Tun Razak would would have countenanced or be a party to as it runs against the very grain of civility and being a gentleman or Jun Zhi.

In fact, never before under the five previous Prime Ministers of Tunku Abdul Rahman, Tun Razak, Tun Hussein, even Tun Mahathir and Tun Abdullah, had any more devious and diabolical plot been hatched in utter disregard of the most rudimentary rules and principles of good and democratic governance than the disgraceful ROS gambit to knock out a long-established political party from freely and democratically participating in the general elections of the country by outlawing its symbol, the Rocket logo.

Clearly the RoS action is meant to be a blow to the solar plexus to completely knock out the DAP in the 13GE, a plot which had been hatched and refined by the RoS’ political masters in the past few months – explaining the rumours on the MCA/UMNO grapevine since the beginning of the year that the DAP would not be allowed to use the Rocket symbol in the 13GE!

Now, we have the MCA President shedding crocodile’s tears, asking that the DAP should be allowed to use the Rocket symbol in the 13GE. I will not be surprised if the MCA leadership is the main culprit behind the RoS decision, appealing for help from the UMNO “Big Brother” to give a fatal blow to DAP, in the same way that the MCA leadership had surrendered Gelang Patah seat to UMNO so that Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Ghani Othman could be fielded to “kill” me in Gelang Patah.

In today’s press, there is a cacophony of contradictory reports quoting different government officials emitting different noises, from the DAP cannot use the Rocket symbol to the DAP can use the Rocket symbol.

One of the saddest legacies of 56 years of Umno/BN rule is that independent, neutral and professional institutions and government officers have lost public credibility, trust and confidence – as in the RoS letter two days before 13GE Nomination Day declaring that the government does not recognise the DAP’s CEC four months after their election.

Not recognising the DAP CEC can only mean “not recognising” the DAP Secretary-General Lim Guan Eng and the collateral consequence of “not recognising” his authorisation of the use of Rocket symbol by the 53 parliamentary and 103 state assembly candidates.

The long decades of undemocratic, draconian and authoritarian Umno/BN rule have destroyed the efficiency, independence and professionalism of one of the best civil services in the world when the country achieved independence 56 years ago in 1957, resulting in the monstrous action by the RoS letter the DAP yesterday!

The refusal of the RoS to recognise the DAP CEC and consequent disallowance of the use of Rocket in the 13GE is the new and latest reason why there must be a change of government on May 5, so that a start could be made to restore the reputation, credibility and integrity of the Malaysian civil service as among the top best civil services in the world.

I thank the PKR and PAS leaders, in particular Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Tok Guru Nik Aziz, Datuk Seri Hadi Awang, PAS Secretary-genral Mustapha Ali and PKR Secrtary-General Saifuddin Nasution for their understanding, support and comradeship in coming to the assistance of DAP in our crisis because of the RoS action at the behest of the Umno/BN leadership.

Pakatan Rakyat leaders had sought to register the Pakatan Rakyat as a political coalition under the Societies Act but for more than three years we encountered seemingly insuperable obstacles, all emanating from the political masters in Putrajaya, refusing to register Pakatan Rakyat so that PR candidates of all the three political parties, DAP, PAS and PKR can use a common symbol.

Now the Societies Act and the Registrar of Societies have been suborned and undermined to serve the political interests of the powers-that-be in Umno/
BN.

I fully agree with Anwar that the RoS action is part of the “dirty tricks” lined up by UMNO/BN to cheat in the 13GE by making it impossible for the DAP to use the Rocket logo in the coming general eletions.

DAP leaders, candidates, members and supporters are not going to be deterred or demoralised to fight the great and good fight to achieve for the first time a political change at the federal level in the 13GE, even if we have to temporarily forgo the Rocket logo and to use the logos of PKR and PAS.

In fact, we are even more determined to translate our shock and sorrow into strength and power for change.

The Rocket symbol had stood tall in Malaysian politics in the past 47 years, standing for integrity, honesty, justice, the rule of law, good governance and Malaysian patriotism.

It will be sorely missed if the Rocket is not allowed to be used in the 13GE because the UMNO/BN government is too afraid of the DAP and on the appeal of MCA, prepared to break all principles of good and democratic governance to knock out the Rocket in the 13GE.

What is in store for the future with the DAP use of PAS and PKR symbols in the 13GE?

In the first place, my chances of winning Gelang Patah has plummetted further, from 50-50 before the announcement of Ghani Othman’s candidacy, to 45-55 with Ghanie’s candidacy and now 40-60 per cent with the ban on the Rocket symbol in the GE.

Can I catch up to go above 50% in the contest with Ghani Othman?

The second outcome to the DAP use of the PAS and PKR logo is either a disaster in-the-making for the DAP nation-wide or it will become a game changer in the 13GE that will propel Pakatan Rakyat all the way, from Gelang Patah to Putrajaya?

Only the counting of votes cast on May 5 will tell which outcome will happen.

Many are disgusted by ROS action but not so surprise. Many voters who has resolve to vote for change will not be deter by the change of symbol but for the older generation of voters who has been loyal and vote DAP simply on the recognition of the ROCKET symbol may have an impact.

so Sdr Lim Kit Siang and Central Executive Committee, ARE YOU GOING TO GIVE UP SO EASILY WITHOUT A FIGHT? Shedding tears will get you NO WHERE. You guys have gone a long way and are almost there! Come on, fight back! Barisan is obviously playing dirty, can’t you use legal means to stop this?

Dear Datuk Ambiga and Bersih Team, how come there is no word from you. For years, you have been championing the rights of Malaysians for free and CLEAN Elections. This move by ROS is NOT CLEAN. Please make your presence felt when it is most needed. Dear Bar Council, ROS has done an “illegal move.” Where are your objections?

What about a demonstration rally Malaysian wide to object ROS’ move.

Please do something about it. Don’t shed tears.

Sdr Lim, I heard your press conference and now read your statement. I disagree with you in one thing – you considered Mahathir as more “gentlemanly” than the present regime. You are wrong Sdr Lim. The present regime is under the direction of Mahathir. Mahathir did not behave the way the present regime behaves because Mahathir knew the result before each election during his reign was held. That is the difference. The depravity of Mahathir is boundless.

I admire your courage , strength and your patriotism , this is what I believe , for a nation to truly progress , you need 2 strong opposition parties , parties that cancel each other out and strive to bring more progress to the nation through deeds and not oppression just like the States and the English. BN now faces a new ‘threat’ and that being PR , have now resorted to such tactics out of fear. As a leader , you at times have to be ruthless , the smell of fear should infuse you with renewed strength and vigor to empower your opposition , which in this case I believe should be applied. The ban of the logo are tell-tale signs of fear , it should not break you , but rather drive you further forward.

As our potential future leader , do not break under pressure , for if you do , who are we to look to in times of desperation ? I only hope PR does not prove to be another BN…or an even bigger tyrant when seated in a position of power , for as they say , power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. In any case , this time around , you folks have my support as we badly need another champion besides BN. Cheers.

Just a suggestion, can all DAP candidate stand as independent but using the ROCKET as Symbol? Instead of other symbol approved by SPR?

Meaning that ROCKET is still the symbol for all DAP candidate, standing as independent candidate. Yes? No?

Either way, we have 13 days to bring the message home that, == VOTE ANY SYMBOL, EXCEPT THE BN Scale.

I think BN must be feeling the heat now. They are thinking of ways to have an easy victory, best if they can win uncontested. DAP’s party election was held over 4 months ago, why did the ROS have to wait until such a critical time to inform the DAP that party officials elected in the election were not recognized? Clearly, this is a deliberate attempt to victimize the Opposition.

It is important to carry the message that DAP has not been cannabalised by PAS but it was PAS that lend a hand for DAP candidates to contest under PAS logo. Would that be counter-productive?

ROS refuses to register Pakatan Rakyat for the simple reason that it wants Pakatan Rakyat to use three separate logos instead of one. Now by default Pakatan Rakyat uses two logos, the moon and the eye. Is UMNO shooting its own feet making ROS to play dirty? It was abstract to explain that civil servants serve the interest of UMNO, the action of ROS makes that argument simple. Good Muslims do not accept injustice and they will want the moon to triumph over the off-balanced Balance. Rocket voters will simply mark the moon whoever the candidate maybe. This should help PAS candidate too in the Peninsular.

ROS action maybe a blessing in disguise. Najib will enjoy the boomerang.

Pakatan (now, in particular DAP) MUST able to dictate the BASIS of G13 and not be sidetrack by Bumno/ROS latest hideous tactic ( so, as expected ). The voters without the rocket symbol will still able to distinguish their support for DAP candidates even under any other symbols – and, better, best under PAS symbol.
Just by that, the whole issue of any “disparities” between Islamic, non-Islamic has now SHIFTED wholely and landed in Dumno/bn side. Let’s see how they going to sandiwara, spin, twist,,, on this further. Whichever way they call it is going to boomerang right back to them now. It’s a masterstroke ! and showed the caliber, resoluteness and character of Pakatan leadership !(The spirit of support lies in the hearts of the voters for DAP more so given under PAS or PKR even.)

Are we sure its not a disaster for DAP? If the DAP were tying to get sympathy votes from leveraging on being victimized by ROS, it must ask – extra sympathy votes from where? You already have 85% of your traditional constituency’s votes (from the Rocket logo/insignia). Campaigning under “the Moon” logo will more likely minus many votes from that 85% rather than add from fence sitters or BN’s supporters since your political rivals will definitely campaign on the basis that you support PAS’s theocratic agenda. As far as BN goes they’ll just say that ROS and EC have stated in media that DAP candidates could contest under the “Rocket” but it’s the DAP that makes much ado over nothing. If DAP candidates win under (say) PAS logo, wouldn’t this open the way for ROS /EC to later allege post election that the victories void being procured from having confused successfully and misleading electorate esp PKR and PAS voters, thinking at the time of their casting of votes (that led to victory), that they are doing so in support of and for their respective parties’ candidates rather than DAP’s candidates for whom the votes have been cast? They cannot make this allegation if Rocket logo is used because they themselves have clarified in media that in spite of ROS’s non recognition of CWC, the “Rocket” can still be used as DAP has not yet been deregistered.

    • #37 by kg on Friday, 19 April 2013 - 7:58 pm

The symbol for a candidate’s ballot paper is determined by the authorization letter issued by the secretary general, isn’t it?

What symbol will appear on the candidate’s ballot paper if DAP doesn’t issue the authorization letter, or if ROS doesn’t recognize the authorization letter?

A win on Pas/PKR ticket is a win on Pas/PKR ticket, the voters voted on the respective symbol.

I agree with this strategy of using two letters of authorisation, DAP’s LGE first and if not hedging against the 2nd PAS’s Mustafa Ali. The ball is on BN’s court: which it thinks serves UMNO best and DAP worse! I expect that the EC will likely accept LGE’s authorisation for the Rocket. It is not bound by what ROS thinks about DAP’s CWC. Otherwise EC contradicts its public statement on the issue- that Rocket may be used, and people will perceive that the BN plays foul last minute.

The Elections Commission must answer the question whether DAP can or cannot use the Rocket. Is it to late to take out an injunction against the E.C? Think fast DAP. I hear we have good lawyers in DAP, especially a certain Lion of Jelutong.

I would say it’s definitely a game changer that will propel Pakatan Rakyat to Putrajaya. The rakyat has long yearned for a united Malaysia where race are no longer important and everybody can live in harmony and prosperity respecting each other. You can’t do the same action for 50 years and expect different results. Maybe your old minds are still shackled by Mahathir’s ploy of racial division and voting by symbols for umpteen years. The younger generations of today don’t have that mentality. The use of PAS and PKR symbols may not necessary be a bad thing. It may in fact be a God’s blessing in disguise for the older generation in DAP to think out of the box which has long shackled by UMNO. PAS, DAP and PKR will be like the the 3 musketeers – all for one and one for all. The rakyat loves a good hero and good story line in bad and tumultuous times. Don’t forget EC and ROS may act like the good guys allowing DAP to use the rocket symbol. But any one from the public later on can challenged the illegitimacy in court. You already know who controls the court. So there is some element of risks. The use of PAS and PKR symbols are only for the election. Later on DAP can revert back to its own symbol. The overriding aim is to get to Putrajaya. Once in Putrajaya, EC and ROS will be yours to control and any impediments can be overcome. What is there to lose to use PAS and PKR symbol tomorrow? It will soften DAP image to the rural malays and take that fear out from the malays which has been long planted by UMNO. For the chinese, DAP will still be DAP no matter what symbol you use. Today people are more educated unlike the old days where symbol is important. It’s definitely a game changer that will propel Pakatan Rakyat to Putrajaya. All for one and one for all!

I have said this before, and I am saying it now. The RoS has just handed Pakatan and the DAP in particular the biggest GE13 present than you could ever imagine. Even the most conservative among the Malays and Chinese will come out in droves to support your team, something which you may not able to do so by yourself. In short, UMNO/BN has not only bring about a bigger tsunami but create an earthquake that is waiting to happen. Stop all the speculations and turn the whole country ‘Green’ is the next best thing to do. Leave the rest to the Rakyat. Just fly us to the Moon!

Thank you RoS for making it our day!

They attacked d wrong party..making them look racist..now d chinese DAP heroes will get d backing of PAS-supporting malays! And DAP supporters will be grateful to PAS & PKR for their leaders being able to fight under their banners. So happy..never seen chinese & malays unite like that. Don’t know if they will remember to keep this spirit aftr elections but right now, d unitedness is fantastic! Guess d evil & stupid will just phase out..

When LKS fights under the banner of PAS in Gelang Patah, I can already see the ocean of green coming out to lift him onto the Gelang Patah throne. The fight is no longer race-based…it’s simply to return justice to the land.

Rocket and moon are so closely related. Only with the rockets, people realised what is on the moon. By having a moon, people made tremendous technological advances to reach to the outer space.

There’s “opportunity” in every crisis. That’s how the Chinese civilisation has taught us. The Mandarin word/phrase for crisis is inbeded with the word opportunity.

Put all heads together and see where and what opportunities that will arise out of this crisis.

ROS sent a letter to the SG of DAP hand delivered at 10 PM last night clarifying that the letter ROS sent to DAP on 18 April, two days earlier, has no implication with DAP participating in the coming election. It is as good as not having sent the earlier ROS letter of the 18th.

ROS must have been working extra hard for sending one letter and follows it up with another at 10 PM. Maybe Najib has transformed ROS to work overtime. Was it Najib who made ROS to send the letter of the 18th on the 18th, and felt the boomerang yesterday? But Malaysians have been talking about ROS over the past two days. The effect is better than having TV telecast on PR election manifesto. Any more dirty tricks that can cut BN?

BumNo is scared by the overwhelming responses from the rakyat, its too dangerous for BeEnd if DAP is to use the moon logo.

BumNo’s next blunder is to deregister DAP after PR won Putrajaya.

All these actions show that UMNO/BN is extraordinarily scared of their nemesis, the DAP!
Now, the Malaysian electorate are really, really riled!
    Like never before!
So much so that even if DAP’s candidates were to contest the GE under PAS or PKR symbols, it doesn’t really matter.
What they want at all costs is to get rid of the Devils that haunted this country for five over decades!
    They must be exorcised completely!!
    Just do it!!!!
