Guan Eng, when announcing the new office bearers, said that the newly-setup Pakatan Rakyat bureau will play a role in cementing closer ties between coalition parties.

“To show that we are a real alternative for Malaysians, we must make sure the bureau is efficient,” he said.

The Penang chief minister also urged party members to get into fighting mode, saying they were only 100 days away from the fierce general election battle.

“If we want a better future, then we are only 100 days shy from making that historic decision.

“How many 10 years do we have, how many opportunity does a country have? We can’t wait anymore longer, we must change now,” he said to resounding applaud.

The party concluded its two-day congress with the party adopting nine resolutions proposed by the grassroots members, which included among others to support the anti-hopping legislation, to close down the controversial Lynas rare earth refinery plant, to make sure party leaders attend functions without local branches having to bear much of the costs and to do away with racism and religious bigotry.

Father and son team sweep DAP polls

Leven Woon | December 15, 2012

None of the Malay candidates who contested made it to the central executive committee.

GEORGE TOWN: The father and son team of Lim Kit Siang and Lim Guan Eng topped the DAP central executive committee (CEC) elections at the DAP 16th Congress held here today.

The elder Lim, who is also party adviser topped the list followed by the Penang chief minister and party secretary general Lim Guan Eng. DAP chairman Karpal Singh came in third.

A total 1,823 delegates voted in the elections to pick 20 CEC members. These members would among themselves decide who would hold the party’s top positions tomorrow.

The elder Lim obtained 1,607 votes, followed by (Lim) Guan Eng who garnered 1,576 votes while Karpal obtained 1,411 votes.

Some others delegates who formed 20-member line up include Chong Chieng Jen, Loke Siew Fook, Tan Kok Wai, Tony Pua, Fong Kui Lun, Nga Kor Ming, Chong Eng, Chow Kon Yew, M. Kulasegaran, Teresa Kok, Ngeh Koo Ham, Teng Chang Kim and Boo Cheng Hau.

It must also be noted that none of the Malay candidates who contested made it to the CEC.

The biggest casualties of the polls appear to be veteran DAP leader and Kepong member of parliament Tan Seng Giaw. Penang deputy chief minister and Batu Kawan member of parliament P Ramasamy also failed to make the cut.

Apart from Karpal and his son Gobind Singh Deo, Ipoh Barat member of parliament M Kulasegaran were the only Indian representatives in the 20-member CEC.

The new CEC members will meet tomorrow to elect among themselves the office bearers, as well as to appoint 10 other members to sit in the committee.

Those elected are:

1. Lim Kit Siang (1,607 votes)
2. Lim Guan Eng (1,576)
3. Karpal Singh (1,411)
4. Chong Chieng Jen (1,211)
5. Loke Siew Fook (1,202)
6. Vincent Vu (1,202) [new]
7. Tan Kok Wai (1,199)
8. Gobind Singh Deo (1,197)
9. Tony Pua (1,162)
10. Teng Chang Khim (1,152)
11. Fong Kui Lun (1,137)
12. Nga Kor Ming (1,075)
13. Chong Eng (1,006)
14. Chow Kon Yeow (986)
15. Liew Chin Tong (984) [new]
16. M Kulasegaran (984)
17. Boo Cheng Hau (958)
18. Teresa Kok (925)
19. Teo Nie Ching (903) [new]
20. Ngeh Koo Ham (824)

Five candidates dropped out of the DAP central executive committee contest earlier today. They are Choong Siew Onn, Er Teck Hwa, Jaya Balan Valliappan, Teo Kok Seong and Violet Yong Wui Wui.

Except for Teo, the newly minted DAP Socialist Youth chief, who said he wanted to focus on developing the party for quitting, the reason for other withdrawals are not yet known.

Meanwhile, Karpal said he was surprised that Seng Giaw and Ramasamy have been dropped, but he stressed it was the party delegates’ decision.

“The delegates have spoken, and there is no return in the next three years. We will see what happened,” he said.

Kulasegaran said he was “speechless” upon hearing that Ramasamy was not voted into the CEC.

“I was so sure that he would do better than me because he got a track record in the Indian community.

“But you have to understand that he is quite new to politics. But he didn’t go very far behind, surely he can be co-opted tomorrow,” he said.

Loke said the intense competition was the main reason why certain veteran or prominent leaders did not make it to the CEC.

“But we stressed that although they did not make it, we deeply value their contributions.

“So when the new CEC members [meet tomorrow], we would certainly consider appointing them [to fill the 10 seats],” he said.

This is DAP party election and who they appoint in are their own business how to manage their party.
Najib brought in defeated candidates like Koh Tsu Koon …so many MCA defeated candidates to govern the country and that is going against People.
Najib knows….People do not fear the government.
It’s Najib and his government fearing the People.
People can see the differences between BN and PR.
Najib can try all sorts of stunts to prove BN is better and he is such a nice PM.
No one cares…no one trust him….especially he keep on being silent over Deepak’s accusations that he has something to do with Alantuya’s death.
The details given by Deepak should get MACC reasons to arrest Najib …his brother Nazrim and Rosmah and force all to tell the truths in court.
No MACC is keeping quiet and it needs DAP Karpal to help MACC do their work.
If MACC do not act….more voters will run away from Umno b.
Concerning the Gerakan MCA dummies..all will be thrown out to the tong sampah….come 13th GE.
To me..Najib is trying to live as a free man …..as long as he can….for his party itself is split in the middle.

Do not be surprised that Najib will announce his stepping down and let DPM be PM to lead the 13th GE and he and Rosmah will disappear….. ONLY to be seen again…if BN wins.

Meritocracy must be the order of the day.
    May the best man/woman wins!!!
    Regardless of race or religion!!!!
Otherwise, PR will be another UMNO/BN!
Where they spent more time bickering on race and religion instead of governing the country!
That is, other than their favourite pastime of robbing the country and providing Malaysians with all sorts of scandals!!!!
So PR, play your part by providing the gold standard in governance and we, the electorate, will give you a resounding YES in the coming GE!!!!!!

Glad to hear that Pakatan have father and “son” teams too, like Singaporean politicians. The Lims, the Lions, and Annuar with her lovely daughter. Best of Luck to DAP, and Pakatan. I hope that will be the end of the dynasties, even though, so far, we have nothing to complain by way of nepotism in Pakatan. At least, NOT YET!

There is a misconception about the word “nepotism!.
According to the Oxford dictionary, it means “the favouring of relatives or friends, especially by giving them jobs”.
Or in the case of UMNO/BN, giving their family members and/or friends) a ladle, so that they can dip it into the gravy train!!
    That is nepotism!
It doesn’t mean that having family members in the same political party or high office will be equivalent to nepotism!!
Only when benefits are given to the relative (or even friends) by the person in power, will the word be relevant.

Agree with Winston. If father – son connection equals to nepotism, then all second generation business leaders are nepo-wankers. The famous coffee shop at Daeng Wangi Yuk Kee, for example, is runned by the 2nd of not 3rd generation and business is still thriving.

If the son is also good like the dad doing the same thing, it is called “tiger father no dog son” (chinese proverb).

Paolo Maldini was a superb defender and when his dad Cesare Maldini coached the Italian national team in the 1998,did anyone say Paolo was in the team because of his dad?

If the son is good then meritocracy rules. Lim Guan Eng certainly got it. Lim Kit Siang did not make people vote for him but the people in Melaka and Penang voted him in because of what he did.

Lim Guan Eng is certainly not getting everything on a plate – especially his route was via imprisonment, twice.

On the other hand, the current PM was a smooth sailing fellow who has a famous daddy. Although he did win an election in 2008, but did he get a mandate from the rakyat as PM?

What about a certain Keris welding minister who also had a famous ancestor? His deeds and talks also drew much brickbats from creditable commentators…now do we hear accusations of nepotism about these 2? certainly not from controlled mainstream media.

BN politicians are not that dumb as they appear to be.
It’s their ways to capture as many less educated voters as possible.
Mahathir is ignoring how much we know about him
He cares only how much he can fool Malaysians…especially the Muslims.
Najib has one priority and one only…to win 13th GE for the love of his life and not for country and People.
DPM cannot wait to see Najib resign and he becomes PM…even for few weeks before 13th GE…sort of getting the “RAHMAN” prophesy go away.
Each has selfish reasons….and that what MCA & MIC are they for…nothing but for selfish reasons.
They keep seeing easy money available.
BN is nothing but a bunch of rouges and thieves and millions have been brainwashed by Mahathir for 22 years.
Slowly but surely all voters brains are back to normal.
With normal Malaysians voters…from the lower income group waking up….plus the 3 million new young voters….Najib do not stand a chance….no matter how hard Mahathir tries to help him.
Changing guard…give Myhiyuddin…his DPM to lead the 13th GE is the only trick left……besides creating troubles to declare Emergency Rule.
All their tricks and ideas are exposed.
Without stealing….playing with races….with religion and even rulers..Mahathir’s Umno b is NOTHING.

    ///DAP adds non-Chinese, East M’sians to CEC///

Yeah, that is good as it speaks of “inclusiveness”.

Must say is wise way to have this 10 by appointments into CEC irrespective of the voting outcome at least for the time being. First, it at least ensure that those that are not apt at garnering votes but of calibre or in need can be roped in this way. Also by way of the 7 East M’sian inclusion it indeed showed how the party can add new dimension into the party to keep up with present times and ‘to walk the talk’. Besides, by inclusion of TSGiaw and RMS showed how some tinkering still can be carried out to smoothen the outcome. Well thought out !
But whether one gets in CEC or not is immaterial. Ulimately, it boils down to one individual self of wanting/willingly to sincerely SERVE the party / public (irrespective of being elected comes G13) – if, a politician is you want. But DEFINTELY not the way of UMNO/bn’s ways – over 50 years of BULLSHIT in particular Madtir’s regime and even now still same modus operandi to hookwink, lie, last minute buy votes ( mind you with public funds without any rancour of shame or honour and all rehtorics and ‘brow forehead’ – so, pathetic, hipocrisy the ‘pm’ showboat way ! Maybe, only to fool the rural folks – such shame these ‘leaders’ have become and worst – playing dumb IN VIEW OF DEEPAK’S revelations – no honour at all !

It was reported that there are signs that money politics begins to emerge as the party membership expands. I hope LKS and LGE could do something about this before money politics takes roots and ruins the party.

There is one thing I want to say about the charge of nepotism and criticism of maintaining the status quo of DAP leadership – its weak critcism.

Look at the line of leadership – can people honestly say that any of the other leaders in DAP are THAT MUCH BETTER? I have no doubt that LGE, Gobind Singh got a leg up because of LKS, Karpal Singh BUT do these critics mean to say only someone that does not have any personal/familial link proves that the leadership is not meritorious? LGE is good multi-lingual public speaker, he is technically a good administrator, have decent soft-skills, have loyal followings – does not mean that he is not the best person for the job. Gobind Singh is one of the best lawyers around, works tirelessly and even on some issues that receives little public symphathy..Can anyone who competes for their post and power say they are SO MUCH BETTER than them? Honestly No..

Like it or not, the truth is too many talented people refuse to participate in opposition politics for too long, left the country and in fact many were in cahoots with the ruling party because it was much more personally rewarding. The opposition itself suffered a dearth of talent that itself is felt even now because they were on a losing end of the battle. There is no doubt in my mind that there is a new generation of talented leader are in it because they see a potential to make real impact rather than be on the losing end of the fight – they are not all about principle or even just first and foremost. The days of people wasting their time and effort for long periods on losing proposition on principle is DEAD.

Make no mistake, the group of leaders – be it in DAP, PR or even in PAS are not the most able – like it or not the talented ARE A SELFISH LOT THESE DAYS – just compare Wall Street to Washington, in London, the city vs Downing Street, even Beijing vs Shanghai, Mumbai Vs Delhi and you will see the obvious.

DAP and LGE personally is grooming and bringing in new leaders that are better but need to bring in even more particularly the non-Chinese. I still say their biggest failure is not having bring in leaders of Sarawak and Sabahan long time ago..Lack of resource is NO EXCUSE – it wasn’t before, and now its just bad excuse.

But the fact of the matter is that while the CEC leadership can be better and more dynamic – the problem began long time ago and now they are catching up and will take time..Such process are inherently difficult because as PAP will tell you – even if you offer riches and power to the best – someone else can offer more and not the mess and heartaches that politics and public service brings.
