A really hefty price increase!

Fuel hike: 78 sen more to RM2.70 per litre
Malaysiakini
Jun 4, 08 4:55pm
The government has just announced that petrol price will go up by 78 sen at midnight - a 40.6 percent jump from RM1.92 per litre to RM2.70.

The price of diesel will go up RM1, or 63.3 percent - from RM1.58 per litre to RM2.58.

The price hikes are among government measures to cut the spiralling bill for oil subsidies, which is expected to amount to RM56 billion this year.

At a press conference held at 5.30pm, Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi also announced that the government plans to offer rebates to motorists to offset the fuel price increase.

Under the scheme, vehicles below 2000cc will receive a RM625 rebate annually - to compensate for 800 litres of fuel used under the new price.

Meanwhile, motorbikes will be given a rebate of RM120. The money will be paid by postal order.

Rebate will be paid when motorists renew the road-tax for their vehicles.

The government is expected to save RM4 billion under this new subsidy restructure.

However, the government is slowly expected to head towards totally abolishing the fuel subsidy.

If petrol is to be sold at full market prices, it could be as high as almost RM4 a litre - about 50 percent above current levels.

Since 2004, petrol has gone up by 97.1 percent, while diesel increased by a whopping 231 percent [see chart below].

Higher TNB tariffs

Abdullah also announced that the road tax for vehicles above 2,000cc will be reduced by RM200. For motorbikes above 250cc, their road tax will be slashed by RM50.

The diesel subsidy for fishermen will be fixed at RM1 per litre while vessel owners will have to pay RM1.20 per litre.

The premier also announced a price hike in gas supply for electrical and industry sectors.

The premier further said that the electricity tariffs too would be increased.

He added that the power tariff rate would remain the same for households which use about 200 kilowatt of electricity, which would still cost them RM43.60.

Any usage beyond this would fall under the new price which will be announced by power supplier Tenaga Nasional soon.

Following such a steep increase in petrol price, prices of other goods are bound to rise and hence the cost of living will rocket. More miseries are in store for the rakyat especially the middle and low income groups.

Mr. Anwar should quickly bring about a change of Federal Government to alleviate the people’s suffering.

    Questions to ask in Parliament:
    1. Would there had been a petrol price hike if the Pakatan Rakyat had taken over the Federal Govt?

    2. How come fellow oil exporters like the Gulf emirates do NOT sell petrol at world market rates to their people?

    3. Now that we can save RM56 billion from not subsidizing petrol, should we use this savings to buy the used useless re-entry capsule from Russia and also send up more umno space tourists to the ISS?

Well Willlam85, widen your global viewpoints, BN always confuses us by claiming we still enjoy the cheapest oil price in Asia and one of the cheapest in the world. Just widen the comparison, those countries are not oil exporter, WE ARE! BN always says countries like Singapore, British, Japan, blablalala their oil price are a few times than us in actual RINGGIT, but in actual RINGGIT, those buggers earn a lot more folds than us! As oil exporter country, the citizen should benefits from the petrol income. Why we should pay more unless the wealth is badly mis-managed like what BN is doing! The oil dug out from our own ground that belongs to all of Malaysians, NOT BN, NOT PM, NOT PETRONAS.

Change GOV ASAP~~!!!!! for the sake of our living…how you going to survive. I am sure there will be catastrophic impact on other goods pricing if easily such a price hike for rice and petrol. CHANGE YOUR LIFE STYLE as told our dear PM? Isnt that better for all of Malaysia to change just the PM?

    Calling for ….

    ADBULLAH BADAWI immediate resignation!!!

What is the use of saving RM4 billion, while at the same time the nation is going to lost tens of billion Ringgit?

    This will be the situation:

Savings from reduction of subsidy = RM4 BILLION

    CONSEQUENCES/LOSS :

    1.
MANY COMPANY could not survive the spirally rising cost due to chain reaction from rise in fuel cost -transportation, demand for higher pay, raw material

Result: Many company close down -government collect less tax, many people lost jobs

    2.
Many people would live in poverty. There meagre income just enough to buy food, no more money left for supporting their children education. Free education in Malaysia? - Well do the government pay for transportation cost to school? no! And higher education is definitely not free.
-This would result big loss to the nation too

    3.
    Dampening domestic consumption.
-people could not afford to buy houses and cars
Result - PROTON may become just history
-Business community will lost income too

    4.
Increase in crime rate -when the poverty strikes, crime rate would increase

So, is is justified to save RM4 billion while losing RM400billion ?

william, our country is a net exporter of oil. The billions of profit that Petronas made can be channelled back into savings of rakyat. Also consider enormous amount of wastage the govt spent recklessly such as Port Klang Free Zone scandal, purchase of submarines, proposed new Istana Negara, etc. If can splash money just like that, cushioning the rakyat against rising oil prices should be justified.

The govt can’t manage the current inflation rate which is taking toil especially on lower income groups, public transportation is hopeless and IPPs are still being freaking subsidized! And you want to defend Bodowi?! I just assume you’re too naive for your own good.

    ————————-

Regardless of the global petrol price, we are an oil producing nation. So one can never compare us with oil-importing countries like most nations. All it takes would be to have a Govt that uses Petronas money to spare its rakyat the pain. Instead, the rakyat has to feel the pinch, and Petronas $$ can be put to unknown use elsewhere.

The way that many Malaysians blindly accept what excuses are given to them are unbelievable.

Time to really educate the rest of our fellow Malaysians not to believe in the stupid BN crap and excuses.

The facts are fast emerging that speculators (in oil futures) are behind the price increase. The argument that the fast growing economies of India and China are responsible for it is fast losing ground.

Though the idea of a subsidy interfering with free market forces would not be good in the long run, the equitable effect in the short term cannot be denied.

It is good to note that as the PM announced the petrol price increase, the heavens showed her anger, with thunder and lightning and rainstorm, which again showed the government shortcomings in the mainroads. Traffic was virtually at a standstill all across KL town, and the suburbs. It took me an hour and half to get from Saujana to Subang Jaya ). The roads were flooded and the traffic lights on many roads were down. So now we pay more for petrol and waste more petrol on the roads. Thanks to the government of the last 50 years. Back to the petrol price increase. Don’t hold your breathe. Looks like this is the first of three price hike. This one in June. Another in July and a third one in August, when it will be market value, as announced by the Minister of domestic trade, earlier. So, we should all gear up for inflation. REBATE for what? RM625 is nothing compare to the fuel price at the moment…how much u can buy using RM625 for a year…worst still make things complicated…

RM 625/12 = RM 52.0833 per month? (additonal?)

    Example:-
    Proton Waja -Full Tank 45L
    45L x RM 1.92 = RM 86.40 (Before)
    45L x RM 2.70 = RM 121.50 (After) effective on 5 June 2008
    price differences = RM 35.10

We are given additional RM 52.0833 per month…
How many times we can fill up our tank full based on RM 1.92?

    RM 52.0833/RM 35.10 = ONLY 1.483 time full tank…

First 1.483 full tank, we are still paying at RM 1.92

There after we are paying for RM 2.70!!!!!!!

In a month, our petrol usage averaging from RM 200-RM 300
    depending on car models, etc…

Let assume we are spending RM 200 @ RM 1.92 currrent oil price
    RM 200/1.92 = 104.17 Liter

if Given our full tank is 45L therefore,

    104.17/45 = 2.314 time full tank…

First 1.483 tank…we are paying for RM 1.92
Remaining 0.831 tank we are paying for RM 2.70

    0.831 x 45 L x RM 2.70 = 100.9665 (After)
    0.831 x 45 L x RM 1.92 = 71.7984 (Before)
    Differences = ADDITIONAL RM 29.1681

    RM 200 + 52.0833 (per month) = 252.083
    2.314 tank x 45L x RM 2.70 = 281.151
    Difference = ADDITIONAL RM 29.068

    hope my calculation is right..heh

It has been reported that among the measure taken to reduce the petrol subsidy is the direct cash payments to motorcyclists and small car owners.
This is the stupidest decision I have ever known in my entire life. It shows the low calibre of the people in our Badawi’s Cabinet.

1.A large number of those two cannot afford motorcycles and small cars take buses to go to work. When petrol price increases, it is a foregone conclusion that the bus owners will increase the fares. Instead of helping the poor, this category of people will be hit by a double whammy – increased bus fares and increase in prices of food, goods and services and everything else!

2.A new small car costs much more than a second hand car. For example, a small new 850cc Kancil cost $27,000 can carry about 4 persons albeit with some difficulty but a second hand 2500cc Volvo 850 costs about $15,000 could carry goods and 5-6 people easily without problem. In fact, we do find a lot of poor kampong folks driving big, old but cheap continental cars/vans/jeeps because it is more suitable for carrying farm produce as well for transporting their large families. Again they will be hit by a double whammy - increase in price of petrol and everything else!

3.In a poor family of 10 people, only one can afford a small car which is used to make 2 trips to transport everybody. Only one will receive a small petrol payment (for one trip) and the other 9 members will have to bear the increased prices of petrol (for 2nd trip), food and everything else.

4.The huge increase in price of petrol will cause a chain reaction on the increase in prices of other goods and services. Whatever small amounts received by the motorcyclist and small car owners will be largely negated by the more than disproportionate increase in prices of goods and services.

5.Which stupid idiot equates rich or poor with the cc of the vehicles? An average office clerk may own a second hand proton Iswara costing $7,000 (rebate = $850) while the Robert Kuok’s children can own a fleet of 10 new cars of BMW, Audi and Volvo all less than 2000cc and get a total rebate of $850 x 10 = $8,500!

6.In Malaysia, the heavier burden is caused by cost of travelling to work. The cost of travelling will have to include:

    1. toll charges,
    2. amortisation of the vehicle’s cost over the economic useful life of the vehicle, or, for those who have obtained loan financing, the monthly loan repayments,
    3. the annual vehicle maintenance cost (tyres, brake pads, engine oil, spark plugs, etc)
    4. road tax,
    5. Parking; and
    6. petrol

If you analyse above carefully a huge chunk of the expenses goes to car amortisation cost and toll charges. Everyone who has travelled overseas knows for a fact that Malaysia has one of the highest numbers of tolls in the country and very high excise duties on cars.

Take a real life example of a typical average worker in Malaysia earning a take home pay after deducting EPF of RM 2,000 a month. He drives a small Kancil (cost RM27,000) and travels to and from work each day from his home in Cheras averaging about 40 km. His typical monthly travelling cost is:

Amortisation of car for 10 years ($27,000/10/12)………….$225
Petrol (based on current price)………………………………………… ……….$200
    Maintenance of car…………………………………………… ….……..$100
    Road Tax ($50/ 12)…………………………………………… ……………….$4
    Parking ……………………………………………… ………….………………$90
    Total Travelling Cost per Month……………………………………$619
Percentage of Travelling Cost to Take-Home Pay……………………….31%

It simply does not make sense that the use of vehicle for travelling to work to earn revenue for the country would be a whopping 31% of his take home pay for a country that is a net exporter of oil. That does not even include his payment for the increased price of petrol and monthly expenditure for food, housing loan, medical expenses, children schooling expenses, etc, which are certain to increase if the prices of petrol increase.

It makes stupid sense to make a small amount of cash repayments to a small portion of the citizens but the cost of tolls, food, goods and services keep on escalating. I don’t know whether they are aware that not all registered owners are the actual users of the vehicle and how the repayments could go to the actual persons intended.

This way of abrupt petrol price increase would be disastrous to the nation and once the negative chain reactions (stock market crash, run away inflation, economic slowdown, corporate under-budgets, etc) happen, the nation might not recover from it for a long time.

It is haphazard decision hastily decided by a low calibre Badawi cabinet. On TV3 Badaw prided that the cabinet took 4 long hours to deliberate on the issue! Only 4 hours of deliberation for such an important issue? An important decision of this nature which has a rippling effect on the whole nation show be studied by a competent team of economist, academicians and thinkers for months - not by shallow thinking cabinet ministers in 4 hours!

The present UMNO regime has hoodwinked the citizens long enough by just comparing the petrol price with selective non-oil producing countries without taking into consideration the related travelling cost and the cost of living!

Logic will tell you that a fisherman cannot have a same cost of fish as his neighbour who is a farmer!

Meanwhile, oblivious to others, UMNO will be splurging the oil revenue by spending on themselves, their cronies and on other less prioritised projects! UMNO realised that it may be their last term in power and used the opportunity to enrich themselves as much as possible before they are kicked out by the rakyat!

Only the kampong folks may be duped by UMNO! The citizens have had enough of the half-truth of UMNO!

The citizens demand transparency on the accounts of Petronas and how were these revenue been used! Petronas is not “bapa punya” of UMNO – it belongs to every citizens of Malaysia!

The idiot Sharir in TV3 saying that the increases of petrol price is only discriminary to the rich who own big cc car. Did the government consider those average rakyat who have to spent RM 400-RM500/month on petrol to go to work and have to spent extra RM 160 after the hike in petrol price? What is the RM625 rebate which is equivalent to RM50/month. The Minister should go to work by using Proton Waja by tommorow instead of your black Mercedes S500.

sorry messed out my calculation. correction below,

    car rebate: RM625/yr = RM12.02/wk = 41% of RM29.32/wk
meaning: current spending at RM1.92/L, weekly first RM29.32 spent is covered by rebate, subsequence spending is not.

    bike rebate: RM150/yr = RM2.88/wk = 41% of RM7.04/wk
meaning: current spending at RM1.92/L, weekly first RM7.04 spent is covered by rebate, subsequence spending is not.

This is the best move ever by the government. Didn’t many people clamour for reform? Well, this is reform. Didn’t many people say subsidies are bad, that we should take away crutches? Well, this is to be welcomed then.

My only grouse is that they should marked it up to market at one go, instead of bit by bit and prolonging the pain. Why RM2.70? Why not RM4 or RM4.50 per litre? This way, there will be no need to worry about foreign cars coming in to enjoy the subsidies. Heck, while we are at it, why not increase it to RM5 or RM6 per litre? This way, Malaysian motorists can go down the causeway and enjoy the cheaper petrol for a change.

Be careful, you might just get what you wish for.

Reform and market prices. No subsidies. Yes, we are getting there….

Although Malaysia has so much of the natural resources, we have really wasted a lot of our natural resources on unproductive and wasteful projects. Instead of improving our public transports, we spend it on producing cars at higher costs. Worst still, it is the people who have to pay for it. Is that the way to help the less fortunate ones? Now all the negative impacts of the Mahathir mismanagement of the country is manifesting. I tell you, the worst has yet to come. Those people who are still supporting him are foolish people. I don’t think it is very fair to demand a change in govt just because the oil prices are being hiked up. Seriously, what would DAP do in BN’s position?

Those that claim that we shoud cope with this better because we are an oil producing nation have some merit in their argument. But the problem is that we need to know more about the financial situation before making an all out judgment. There are other competing interests on our limited funds. True we have Petronas money, but again I stress that we need more information first.

It might also be noted that being an oil producing nation does not automatically mean that we ought to use other oil producing nations as the benchmark of our actions.

I am not saying that more could not be done, nor am I defending BN. I just think that we should be rational and ask for more information - ask for more alternatives; a more transparent system. If we call for a switch of govts every time prices go up, it will only promote a govt which is LESS transparent since hiding our deficits would be better than being ousted for being honest.

One more thing, perhaps it is about time we Malaysians consider how we can save energy usage. Here in the UK, the movement is gaining momentum. There are many faults with their system, but it’s good to see that the people here are actually trying. Sadly, I haven’t seen the same attitude in Malaysia.

A plate of koew tiaw and other noodles is now RM 4 minimum. Mixed rice is also starting at RM 4 already. In fact everything is already starting at RM 4. Next, the shop owner tells me, the price of drinks, even Chinese tea, will rise very soon. And the mamak shop owner says his roti canai will be RM 1.40 soon and slightly smaller too. Everythings gone up he says, how to make ends meet? He’s already charging an extra 0.30 for every item ordered if you sit in his aircon room. And electricity tariff is due to go up soon. Aiyayyai!!!

With this new rate of RM 2.70, one wonders when will the price of petrol match our exchange rate of US$1 = RM 3.22? Then we will have US$1 = 1 litre of petrol.

Yet Noh Mohd promised some time ago that there will NOT be any price increase this year, no matter what.

It’s quite obvious to me that this PM is taking a political gamble.

What he’s doing is cut the fuel subsidy immediately to save some RM4 biliion monthly so that he can have the money to please those Sabah MPs who have been clamouring for more development funds from the Federal Govt.

This person said the fuel price will increase by August but, less than 24 hours later, he implemented it immediately. That’s a saving of RM4 bil for June, July and Aug., making a total of some RM12 bil. Now, he can dangle the carrot in front of those “donkeys” and promise them development funds. This way, the kataks won’t jump ship to the PR in Aug/Sep.

Obviously, he is not afraid to offend the rakyat by taking money from our pockets right away because we can do nothing to him or remove him as PM. With our money, he can now please those Sabah kataks and, hopefully, prevent them from jumping and, thereby, saving his own political career, at our expense.

The just announced price increase is in a way inevitable, no matter who is helming the government.

We should learn to cut down on unnecessary spendings and tighten our belts to offset price increases in fuel, electricity, food, etc. etc. In that way we can stretch our ringgit a little further.

The truth of the matter is that oil prices were always going to rise anyway - if not now, then in 10 years: the further we move from peak oil. We should’ve prepared for the worst, to smooth the transition out. But no, instead we spent the money ‘decorating’ our country and beefing up our image (as well as filling the coffers of certain individuals). This problem should not have been as bad as it was. Today, we have a lack of finances to cope with the oil price increase, incompetent management, AND the lack of public non-financial resources/infra structure to mitigate the problem!

Look at Singapore: their govt thinks ten steps ahead. They are the financial centre of SEA and they are looking to secure that position. When the liquidity crises occurred, they snapped up alot of shares in many leading financial institutions. They’ve secured their own long term interests - these banks cannot just ‘leave’ Singapore now. On the other hand, what have we done?

To all who are fond of pointing fingers, pls take some moments to reflect on situations in our country and around the world.

We should count our blessings! Ours is a very much subsidised economy. Vis-a-vis the global price of crude oil now, we are paying a comparatively low pump price.

you are not comparing like for like. always compare what an executive in any other countries are earning as compared to malaysians. In UK, a fresh graduate gets 2,500 pounds/month and petrol is 1pound. In Singapore, you earn S$2,500/month and you pay S$2 for petrol. and in Malaysia, due to our great government, our RM2500 to pay petrol at RM2.70?? It is not going to provide us with purchasing power to match what other salary earners overseas are earning.

Now thats why there is always going to be a brain drain in Malaysia. No wonder so many PSD and JPA scholarship holders never did return to the country upon their education overseas.

hey slashed, your argument is reasonable and the rate if we keep the current subsidy until 2012 we’re gonna implode.

But still the govt’s move is unfair and as posters has pointed out:

    - ridiculous toll charges with concessionaires getting billions out of rakyat and laughing all the way to bank. Highways aren’t finite commodities like oil and maintainences don’t justify the current rate we have to pay.

    - public transport is in shambles. The govt isn’t subsidising RapidKL fuel and have not even come up with an explanation. As pointed out again, promises to improve public transport were mere promises. KTM trains are crammed like sardines in peak hours and punctuality is a luxury!

    - car prices and tariffs due to protectionist policies to our local car makers.

the BN govt is still insisting on protectionist, katak-di-bawah tempurung policies like Bumi rights and **** but want us to pay world market prices for fuel!!!! Ain’t that screams a big load of Bullshit?!

I will just refer you to the recent events eg. MBB overpriced acquisitions, handling of the 3 yr seat belt implementation vs. saman now, and loads more questionable/silly issues if you have a look at the parliment debates and now today 41% rise in petrol.

If after years “result of years of misappropriation and mismanagement of public finances” + all similar silly decisions for so many years is not enough to call for CHANGE OF GOVT, then what is enough?

Just compare what u see in Msia vs. how difficult issues such as these are deliberated in the UK. 9 to 5 rightly pointed out its funny that the cabinet took pride in discussing this matter for only 4 hrs. Look at how politicians on BBC hard talk are grilled. Look at how the UK MPs got grilled for simply getting over 100k allowances etc. In Msia, you question, you get a ludicrous response (as some put it, the govt sometimes treats us like we were born yesterday)

    Dear Mr Smith,

Yes. Malaysia is an oil exporter country. We produce approximately 700,000 barrel of oil daily. Our oil is of high premium. So, Petronas sells this oil. And Malaysia imports approximately 600,000 barrel per day.

Petronas does make money. It contributes back to Federal Govt billions of ringgit yearly. It also explores oil in some countries like Vietnam, Sudan, Turkeministan, Timur Leste, Bahrain. Much of its earning come from this foreign ventures.

Yes, Thailand and Singapore do not export oil. Yes, Saudi Arabia, VEnezuela, Iran export oil. How muchSaudi Arabia produces daily ? App 8 million barrels. So, do understand that it is unfair to compare the retail price of oil in Malaysia and that of Saudi arabia?

Do understand that Malaysia will be running out of oil very soon.

The reason why we should oppose this price hike is it will hurt the economy as a whole. High inflation is not a business condusive environment, we will have foreign investors pulling out of Malaysia, forex will then fall, when RM falls in relation to other currencies, all imported goods will then increase further. At the end of the day, damage done from this would be more felt of by the people than otherwise. GDP will fall as a result of this. And all our bosses will tell us that economy not good, sorry we cant give you bonuses and increments, making us all worse off.

The whole world knows that even as the Govt complains about the oil price increase and the corresponding increase in subsidies, it is conveniently silent on the equally huge increase in revenue and profits to Petronas who is benefitting from the global surge in oil prices. The GOvt seems to be in a obscene haste to increase the fuel prices but strangely kept silent on any increases on the price of gas supplied by Petronas to the Independent Power Producers at RM6.40/liter while market price is RM35/litre. The Govt has subsidised these fat IPPs to the tune of RM56b while the people are milked to the max.

It is also strange that the Govt wants to move so quickly to increase the fuel prices by so much so quickly. Is it trying to divert quickly the rapidly increasing profits of Petronas from the subsidy for the petrol and diesels to some other areas which cronies can benefit and before the Govt is taken over by Pakatan/Anwar?

I noticed that basically saying the same thing: hikes, living standards, and f**k BN, etc.

The government is at fault, but not because of rising prices. Rising prices will give signals for us to prepare ourselves…it’s the market’s way of steering us.

What we need to ask is: why isn’t our standard of living higher to absorb this? Why isn’t our purchasing power better? Why isn’t our currency stronger? Why aren’t there alternatives in public transport?

…and here is where the government faulted: not creating the right infrastructure, poor transport planning, national car program, and massive corruption. They could hide it during times of prosperity, but when times like this come, the emperor is shown to have no clothes!

Also the previous subsidies have turned the country into a nanny state where people are too reliant on the government. It’s no wonder there’s a backlash!

The government needs to reduce spending, reduce its size (we have way too many civil servants), stop paying its cronies, and give us a truly sustainable economy.

In this case even a billionaire can buy a 2000cc just to get this rebate. However, what happen for those who don’t own a car but have to pay for the rising food costs because of this. Poor people that doesn’t own a car cannot receive the RM$625 but pay back in term of rising costs on food and basic needs.

Another great (full of sarcasm) by our great BN Federal government.

  134. pjboy Says:
    June 4th, 2008 at 23: 52.54

Don’t know where to begin. I am compelled to write this after seeing what is happening on the roads, driving down from Ipoh-KL just then. BN-Gov is taking us as kids handing out rebates like gula-gula. Using rebates to justify the increase & try to cloud those people whom they think can’t count. Look at the massive jams & rush by rakyat to the pumps. The BN-Gov seem to take pleasure in seeing such incidents, which has become scene of Malaysian life since 2004. They are not paying for it, so it does not matter to them.

Before making such brainless decision or announcement, to take away something, something must be given in return to be seen as fair-value to rakyat (tax payers) at least. BN-Gov regards themselves as almighty over rakyat all the time. Countries that don’t practise subsidies for petrol/diesel at the pumps enjoy other perks*. Not to mention their average per capita income could be much higher than Malaysia (YAB Tony Pua would know what I mean). *perks are such as: NO MEANINGLESS APs that don’t benefit the Rakyat, NO tax (except road tax, but reduce) to reduce price of cars/vehicles, NO TOLLS, NO TAX on spare parts, etc.

On average per capita income, take Australia. The apci is say around AUD 35,000 today. The price at pump is AUD 1.50-1.60/ltr. Malaysia apci if not wrong at RM 25,000 & we pay at the pump now at RM 2.70/ltr. Price of Toyota Camry in Australia is AUD 40-45,000 (depending on variant)…price of Toyota Camry in Malaysia RM 140-180,000. Price of cars engine <1500cc around AUD 20,000 (Honda, Toyota, Holden). In Malaysia, cheapest Proton around RM 25,000 (1300cc). Price of quality home built on 6000sq.ft land say AUD 350,000 (30-60min from city). Price of link-house 24×75 RM 350,000 (complete with low quality fittings from C***a). Figures are not exact but that’s the gist of it. Our currency may have gained against USD but lost quite a bit to others like Euro, AUD, GBP. Tolls are only confined to CBDs in Australia or certain bridges. To those small minded ones, this is a comparison. Just like when oil prices are compared to non-oil producing nations like Singapore, whose apci i was told nearly SGD 40,000. Shall not mention income tax to complicated matters…let’s go back to the topic.

In the first place, what subsidy? First, we need to look at the cost of oil production - did it increase that much? Then we look at the world market price for OIL PRODUCING nations to EXPORT their oil or commodity price for crude oil. Also, whatever happened to the so proudly declared 40B subsidy saved in the last pirce hike? Asap pun ta dak.

The 56B saved only exist on paper by BN-Gov. In reality, PETRONAS will gain that 56B or more while we pump at the stations. The question is what PETRONAS will do with the 56B GAINED from the rakyat. It is quite obvious WHO will gain from the 56B “subsidy” & for what purposes, be it personal or political. The word “subsidy” has been used frequently to fool every rakyat as the marketing propaganda by BN-Gov since 2004. The 56B GAINED by PETRONAS should be enough to pay off all the TOLL-CONs so that all the shareholders (cronies) can retire & leave the country. Pay-off all the interest & debts. Nationalise the highways & truly become “FREEWAYS”. PETRONAS should bear the cost of maintaining the roads to be seen as facilitating for customers. Consider it as customer-service.

Other questions: at what price PETRONAS pay the gov for the oil? How much are exported & at what price? Are we selling our most precious resource at a lower rate to other countries, in return hurting our own industry (primary & agri)?

56B gained by PETRONAS will be at the expense of rakyat, industry & long chain of supply. So at the end of the day, why the price hike? If PETRONAS is for the rakyat, we should be paying price of oil like those other OIL PRODUCING nations. Instead, we are being forced to pay & will continue to pay NON-OIL PRODUCING nation prices. No surprises the 56B gained by PETRONAS will be used for meaningless mega-marked-up projects to suck the funds dry before the next GE, or maybe SNAP-GE or UMNO-GE.

Forget about demanding BN-Gov to improve public transport. They don’t even use it themselves. So, they don’t know what public transport means. Plus, it will not benefit them personally ($$$ wise). So, the best is, use up the 56B to pay off all the TOLL-CONs nationwide. NO SUBSIDY, NO TOLL. This is probably what they are expecting. All TOLL-CON cronies can cash-out now before it’s too late. Look at it as a sign of BN-Gov pressing the eject seat as the plane is nose diving.

When we do become NET OIL IMPORTER, did we ask ourselves: who will control the import price & who will benefit? I smell something rotten here. Will it be another “BERNAS” in the making?

PJ boy has a point. Something needs to be returned.

Well, it has been proven in many places that government intervention always bring about corruption (perhaps except Singapore). Another thing is that the more you subsidize, you actually pay more eventually.

I’m all for a SMALL GOVERNMENT. This means minimal tax, no tax on productivity (INCOME TAX). Without taking our money in the first place through taxes, the money can be spent at the right places. With less taxes we improve our productivity and improve our purchasing power.

Don’t depend on the the government, because all they can do is corrupt it. I’m worried about the trend towards more and more socialism…socialism relies on governments to breast feed the people…it’s just like the NEP…we get people who are too ‘manja’. Another things is socialism has a knack of tranforming into fascism and eventually communism. Let’s not go there.

It’s fine for Petronas to earn more…why to let the rakyat become its shareholders? By being run in a more private way the government can’t touch it as their never ending piggybank.

It could also mean somebody’s pocket is running dry of funds for political business…not to buy over PR MPs but to prevent BN MPs hopping over to PR. How ironic it can be if true. Thus, the hoppers are holding BN-Gov ransom?? Possible leh.

I gather price of rice in China still the same. No increase & no cutting back on consumption. Price of VW cars in China as cheap as Proton here in Malaysia. Imagine VW cars in Malaysia as cheap as Proton in Malaysia…are we being shortchanged?

    cheng on soo,

i guess the only people who voted for BN are those ppl who flourished under BN rule and couldn’t care less about our sufferings.

All the cronies would not be complaining this hike, they would be laughing their heads off, with more funds for them to remit to their swiss acocunts.

In Bangkok, not sure if also rest of Thailand, can fill NGV almost at every petrol station or next to it. Even my friend Camry can come fitted with NGV system. This is what I call a pro-active gov that think of the people. Price of NGV in Thailand similar to Malaysia, but it’s well facilitated (not only in Petronas). Price of cars (Toyota, Honda, etc) also cheaper than Malaysia by RM 30-50K.

A fisherman caught a sea bass and cooked it for his son to eat. Before his son could eat the sea bass, the father asked his son to pay up $10.

The son thought that the fish was caught abundantly from nature and therefore at little or no cost, asked his father why.

The father said “son if I buy that fish in the market, the fish would cost you $15. Therefore, you should be thankful that I’m asking you to pay only $10 because I had subsidised $5 for you!

    *************************************************

Substitute father with Badawi and son with Malaysians and you will see how the BN government has hoodwinked us all these years!

THANKS TO ALL SIMPLE MALAYSIAN WHO VOTED PARTI BARANG NAIK WIV A SIMPLE MAJORITY.

HOW PARTI BARANG NAIK TREAT BACK THE SIMPLE MAJORITY MALAYSIAN?

FUEL PRICES INCREASE RM 2.70 PER LITRE
    ENERGY COST INCREASE 20%

MALAYSIAN BUYING HIGHER COST NATIONAL CAR COMPARE TO SOUTH KOREA PRODUCING THEIR OWN NATIONAL CAR. WHY OUR NATIONAL IS SELLING AT CHEAPER COST IN FOREIGNER COUNTRY? NOBODY INTERESTED IN OUR CAR BECOS IT IS USING INFERIOR QUALITY PRODUCT FROM CRONIES SUBSIDIARY. OUR NATIONAL CAR CAN ONLY BE SELL IN THIRD WORLD COUNTRY.

MALAYSIAN ARE PRODUCING OIL, BUT OUR OIL IS MEANT FOR OTHER COUNTRY LIKE CHINA, THE COMMISSION ALL POCKETED BY COMPANY WHO FACILITATE THE DEAL. ASK URSELF, WHAT RAKYAT MALAYSIAN GET FROM ALL THESE OIL DEAL WITH FOREIGNER COUNTRY? THE GOVT. SAID IT IS OSA (OFFICIAL SECRET ACT) CAN’T BE QUESTIONED.

IN THAILAND, THE INDONESIAN MAID IS DRIVING A HONDA CRV TO THE MARKET, BECOS IT IS CHEAP THERE. BUT HERE EVEN A KELISA WILL COST MORE THAN A REASONABLE CAR FROM FOREIGNER COUNTRY.

Can I ask one very simple question, at the risk of being labelled ‘unfair’.

now, really and honestly, do you think PM Pak Lah really understands all these ‘ups and downs’. Yes, he has made all these announcements, but does he understand its impact: the toll on people’s lives, how to ameliorate effects of increases, how to stimulate the economy to provide the people with competitive incomes and a first-world standard of living. It shouldn’t be the first family only and all UMNO cronies that get to enjoy all the fine perks of life.

My guess is: Pak Lah doesn’t understand. ANd he never will. In a manner of speaking, it’s just too late to teach an old dog new tricks.

    Dear YB,

We are expecting this for a long time already. The solution now is how are we going to offset the increase with change of life style, drive less, NGV conversion etc.

I know of one Water4Gas kit that can help save 30-40% of fuel consumption. Check it out at my block.

I very much appreciate your comments. I stress again that I was speaking against those call for change MERELY because of every little problem we face - this is an advice against certain dangerous ATTITUDES that people here seem to have and hence a call for REASON first and not a defence of BN.

But I do in fact think that the govt has made a mess of it. But the administration throughout the years has changed although the same party rules us. I blame the govt in the past for not being forward looking enough and for their corruption. The problem we have IS MUCH WORSE than it should be. But at the same time the problem we face today is universal. The present govt ought to do their best to solve it and we can do better than to call for an immediate change of govt. There is nothing worse than instability at the moment.

One thing that I have noticed since the so-called political tsunami is that alot of people are increasingly becoming like the enemy we wanted to fight. Alot of the people here have so much hatred for the administration that they’d bring out the torch for every little problem the govt faces/caused. They think that anyone that oppose their view is for the govt - like Concerned Malaysian above who has called me a crony of BN. What I see is that alot of people here are exactly the same as those supporting BN. The difference is that these people are on different teams: same mentality, different teams *sigh*

I hope you understand my worry. When I posted that I wasn’t defending BN I wasn’t. I stressed that I wasn’t saying that they were not wrong either. I merely wished to call for more reason among cert
