Well, at first it was the Malay chief that reject the British and seek for independent, after WW2. The British leave a very good system, take a look at Singapore, Hong Kong, or Australia, and some small countries like Mauritius. The problem is the local at that time rely on radio, and press pamplets, this is control by the Malay regime during that time, well, they use this as propaganda to depict British Rule as "Penjajahan tanah melayu" therefore, the fight for "Ketuanaan Tanah Melayu" this will work 50 yrs ago. But today, the abuse of power, corruptions, and constant robing of nation, is not building a better Malaysia, but messing the whole system that Tun Dr. Mahathir 22 yrs of administration try to build. Tell me, as a leader for 22 yrs and yet u know that "money politics" existed what can you do? this is the mentality which lived in their blood, will u be telling Dr. Mahathir, "Sir, pls sake the whole party?" then who's going to lead the nation? at that time the opposition might not be matured, or strong enough to take over! Well, no doubt the only option is for Pak Lah to step up. Looking at 2004 BN landslide victory, and Pak Lah commitment seems to be the best choice. But Alas, suddenly Khairy come in, the whole nation building plan start to crumble. Not only Khairy give the wrong info, but he destroyed everything.

Perhaps it wouldn't be that bad if we were still part of the British Empire...What wrong did they do to Malaysia or Malaya? Ok, they took our resources...but didn't they bring us rubber tree? This is probably one of the many return-of-investments they did. If the BE were not so broke after WWII, they wouldn't have let go so convincingly. Not saying what our late TAR did was not good (no disrespect). Just trying to fictionalise or imagine how it would have been...if there was no independence & we follow like Australia. I am not around long enough. Anyone to comment?

Yes, this is indeed the way forward, especially with regards the direction of our education system. Sadly, despite the BN losing their 2/3 majority, they are in a state of denial. The necessary and desired steps as Dr Azly has elaborated above will just be an academic exercise. Perhaps if the Barisan Rakyat comes to power at the next general elections, some positive change will result.

Can Abdullah Ahmad Badawi be free to allow the younger ones to run the nation, after the humiliating defeat?
Don't be naive this old man is no longer him after Khairy took over the govt. If Pak Lah can threatened Dato Ahmad Said to drop the Sultan's offer for MB post, and command other leader (cronies) to boycott & disturbed the sworn in ceremony, do you think he give a damned?

Can our Malaysian universities be free to do whatever they like to students, especially to intimidate those who wish to be set their minds free?

No way, they will threaten to put you in ISA. After Tun Dr. Mahathir 22 yrs of regime, it is Khairy rule now.

What good would Malaysia do if its leaders are siphoning the nation’s wealth by the billions, stashing them in places such as Switzerland and the Cayman Islands?
There's nothing you can do, In Malaysia if you are rich and high profile you can easily bend the law, Taib case, Datuk Soh case, and Atlantuya case, the Lingam case, who's not entice by greed? Look at Taib even caught by Australia Immigration, there's nothing they can do, how can Taib have so much cash on hand, where those money come from, with power there's nothing you can do even the law is drafted to protect the rich and powerful? Look at O.J. Simpson case, there are many more high profile case, money can buy time, drag it 2-5 yrs or longer.

As long as Khairy is controlling the govt. don't expect huge change and reform, things will be as it is, the ISA detainee will still be there, as they don't even bother those detainee are relevant, for Khairy releasing them will make him lose face.

Khairy is now the king for Malaysia, don't be too optimistic expecting them to change color. A scorpion never change his stings. UMNO Scorpion is man wearing a black shirt with red UMNO & Scorpion emblem, these are Khairy's man their existence is to create chaos, in Komtar, and Sultan palace.
