“Pace of reforms”? – Abdullah has yet to come to terms with March 8 political tsunami

The Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has yet to fully come to terms with the March 8 political tsunami which swept away the Barisan Nasional’s hitherto unbroken two-thirds parliamentary majority and power in five states.

He said yesterday:

“The result of the elections was a strong message that I have not moved fast enough in pushing through with the reforms that I had promised to undertake.

“I thank the Malaysian people for this message. Point made and point taken,”

Abdullah’s admission is not assuring enough, as he seems to have missed the whole point of the March 8 electoral verdict – not that he had “not moved fast enough” in reforms he pledged more than four years ago, but that he had hardly moved at all apart from periodically paying lip-service to them.

This is why there can be no political honeymoon for the second Abdullah Cabinet to implement what had been pledged four years ago as Malaysians are entitled to demand that these pledges going back to 2003 and 2004 are implemented without any further delay or hitches.

This is the reason why I had sent an urgent letter to the Prime Minister yesterday on the eight reforms which the new Cabinet should immediately embrace at its meeting today to show that the second Abdullah Cabinet is prepared to respond to the March 8 political tsunami and be on top of the changes demanded by Malaysians, in particular:

1. Immediate and unconditional release of the five Hindraf leaders, P. Uthayakumar, newly-elected DAP Selangor State Assemblyman for Kota Alam Shah M. Manoharan, V. Ganabatirau, R. Kenghadharan and T. Vasantha Kumar from Internal Security Act (ISA) detention.

2. Restoration of national and international confidence in the independence, integrity and quality of the judiciary.

3. First-World Parliament – full commitment to comprehensive parliamentary reform and modernization including live telecast of parliamentary proceedings, an Opposition Deputy Speaker, an Opposition MP to head the Public Accounts Committee, ministerial status for Parliamentary Opposition Leader and a full Select Committee system headed by Parliamentarians where every Ministry is shadowed by a Select Committee.

4. All-out drive to eradicate corruption with the elevation of the Anti-Corruption Agency as an autonomous agency answerable only to Parliament.

5. Full implementation of the 125 recommendations of the Royal Police Commission to create an efficient, incorruptible, professional world-class police service to reduce crime, eradicate corruption and uphold human rights, particularly the establishment of an Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC).

6. All-party inquiry to enhance Malaysia’s international competitiveness including having a world-class education system to enable the country to successfully face the challenges of globalization.

“He said he would abide by any decision made by Tuanku Mizan or the Prime Minister including stepping aside and allowing Datuk Ahmad Said to take over as Mentri Besar. ” STAR

He is just a pawn in the power game. He should withdraw himself as the candidate for the post which would leave UMNO with no choice but to put up another candidate. That way Abdullah would not lose too much face. That would be the best way out of the impasse.

The sultan is probably only showing his unhappiness at the UMNO state leadership. The PM as President of UMNO should address the real issues.

It is a constitutional crisis in the making. But I don’t think the sultan who is also the king wants to put the nation into such a mess. But it is clear that the reason why it has gone this far is because as someone says earlier the “poor leadership” skills of the Party president who is caught once again asleep behind the controls.

I am going to raise a point that will no doubt annoy a lot of people. It has to do with the comments of some people here, which is plainly against the rules of fair engagement. I notice that a lot of posters here are keen on using Badawi’s wife as an argument, which I strongly believe should not be done at all. Whatever we might think of the man, let us leave his personal life aside.

Any pyschologist out there to define what kind of disease is our PM suffering from?…psychologically speaking. The admission sounds like he is being provoked (“I thank you…”)…& he is not very happy about it…planning to retaliate (“Point made & point taken…(deep inside) but none given!”). It would have been better if it was “I am sorry to the Malaysian people & the Rulers. The people have spoken & we must fulfill all our promises, going back 2004.”

    Sdr Lim senior,

[I call you Sdr because of your firm belief in a Malaysian Malaysia, not because I am a DAP member.]

Sdr, you say that Pak Lah has not come to terms with the losses. To some extent, he has come to understand the power of blogging.

Question: Has DAP/PKR/PAS come to terms with the victories and are moving ahead?

Why not look at what you can do rather than keep looking at Pak Lah’s shoulder? Again, your teams and co-partners are not opposition anymore. For example, your proposals for this and that…does not seem to have any bite or impact.

Why not act as a team?

    1. Set up your own [coalition] newspapers and apply for a licence. It will be approved.
    2. Seek an appointment with Home Affairs Minister and demand/insist for their release, with appropriate arguments.
3.Convince all races and assure especially the Malays that all races esp theirs will be well looked after in all states run by PAS/PKR/DAP.
    4. Meet all Sultans, one by one, as a group of [TRIO] and sembah them, assure them etc.

Hey, Sdr Lim and Sdr AI and Tok Guru [he may not allow me to call him Sdr yet]….we want your actions to follow your words.

Otherwise, there will be a reversal of the tsunami in five years.

    Dear YB Lim,

Can DAP-PKR-PAS coalition stop bickering about MBs & EXCO lineup? It’s time the 5 states form the government & prepare for the next parliamentary meeting. It doesn’t matter if DAP-PKR-PAS are not able to form an official Barisan Rakyat coalition. What we want to see is solid & affirmative action in bringing justice & fair governance to Malaysia. We don’t want to hear anymore “we will do this, we will do that”. Voters want to see action. Start the engine & walk the talk.

First priority – should be to bring justice to all the corruption & abuse of power by BN so called “leaders”. ‘The Rakyat’ have had enough of monkeys like Zakaria, Khairy, Hishamuddin & Samy Vellu. Screw up once is human nature, screw up twice is tolerable but screwing up over & over while in denial is a sign of incompetence & disrespect! If they fail to realize their mistakes, then somebody pls give them a tight slap. Somebody once said, “All it takes for evil to truimph is for good men to do nothing”.

Second priority – should be to find ways to resolve racial disharmony. I believe the Malays, Chinese & Indians have had enough with racial politics. What we want is a non-racial & fair government. 50 years of being branded as either belonging to UMNO, MCA & MIC take’s time to change but it has to start somewhere. Long have we, the children born after 1969 wonder how did our parents & grandparents were able to form such good friendship with other races & yet we wonder, why does it not happen anymore now? We know part of the reason was NEP but you, me & everyone else knows it can’t be removed anymore. But what CAN be done is to give the same benefits to the non-Malays as well. They paid their taxes, they fought for the country, they contributed to the economy, they have embraced & identified themselves as Malaysians. Why leave them out? They feel abandoned. At this current time, we no longer find just poor Malays, but many many poor Chinese, Indians & all the other minorities as well. They need help too. Sooner or later, when all the Chinese & Indians can no longer pay taxes & contribute to government funds, then who will suffer?

Third priority – should be to grow the economy of these 5 states. Make voters feel secured that they did not make the wrong choice. A poor economy & slow market means slow returns & poor revenues. We don’t want to sacrifice the economy in order to uphold democracy. We want to see projects completed on time & for the benefit of the people. Fair & competitive deals to attract investments. Employment & business opportunites for all. Don’t give BN anymore reasons to setup more useless GLCs to offer employment to Malays because they can’t find jobs.

In summary, pls deliver as promised.

  20. #20 by Tim Sng on Thursday, 27 March 2008 - 12:13 am

Sdr Lim senior, Sdr AI, Tok Guru,

The Rakyat has spoken….and given you mandates in three states. The political platform has been shaken and changed.

The Rakyat can only do one thing: “Undi”.

Now, it is you, the WAKIL RAKYAT, who should take over.

You do not go to the streets, you need not do ceramahs, and least of all, you need not write blogs after blogs and letters after letters to the PM, PL or AAB.

So, what should you do….don’t ask me or anyone else….you are the WAKIL RAKYAT, so you should know what to do. That is why you have been elected.

All these years, you have been crying, shouting, asking….”vote us….” “vote us….” “vote us…”

You did get some votes. The number is not important. Once voted, the responsibility is on your shoulders.

Just get on and do it. Enough of blogs after blogs, letters after letters.
Your voice must be heard. NST, STAR, and the others…TV3, RTM1,2 .. must begin to tell the country what LKS, WA, or Tok Guru is saying.

After the sweeping victory of the opposition…..has the country changed? In terms of transparency, in terms of true change of heart in leadership, in terms of accurate and fair news and reporting.

Surely, we want fair, good news.

Again, from my heart, I believe….next time round, it could be all BN sweeping back, or PKR,PAS,DAP….just holding brooms…sweeping their backyards again.

We need real change. It is time for either a truly independent newspaper or an opposition newspaper. ….to give a balanced reporting.

Blogs and letters and ceramahs is not the answer, surely.

At this stage, I am more disappointed with BR than BN, unless there is a lot of things that you are all doing quietly that we do not know of, which is unlikely, because you are not opposition and so should not be doing things quietly…..after over two weeks.

BR leaders, you have a voice….the voice of the rakyat who voted you…as Wakil Rakyat…..speak, act and move.

Push for the urgent release of the Hindraf leaders…work towards reconciliation……visit the Sultans…..assure the rakyat…esp the Malays that their interests will be protected…act now, not just a few months before the next elections! Don’t make the same BN mistake.

I speak independently, not pro BN nor pro BR, but pro rakyat…as a Malaysian Malaysian, who loves ALL races, and respects ALL religions.

Are we going to read such news for the next five years…….BN this, BN that, BN this, BN that…..and not really know [again] what is happening to our country…especially the five states that are not under BN.

What do you have to say about this very unhealthy situation in the country…where news on radio, TV and newspapers sing one tune only.

Don’t you think it is funny when tons of people are saying DAP/PKR/PAS is no longer an opposition… when their chiefs are going to sit on the opposition bench in the coming house???

While the 5 states people are doing their job… YB LKS is only an opposition MP in the parliament and thus I don’t see any “you and your team should show (insert anything here)” problem with YB’s statement over here… :)

But of course as tons of us have been saying… We have vote… Please make sure what you and DAP are doing is enough to secure the votes on our hand…

And thus I believe YB LKS as a DAP chief, has owed us an explanation as to why the most experienced and talented DAP ADUN in Selangor state assembly did not get to be picked as an exco…. and worse, not a single bit of confirmation that he will be chosen as the speaker in DUN Selangor….

Had YB LKS or the DAP ever forgot about their cry for meritocracy? I hope not…

So far,our PM has given only lip service.

Let’s see if it is different this time.

I have a strong gut feeling it is all of the same thing – promises as in 2004 after the general election.

Yes promises only – all empty promises – all talk and no action.

I do hope I am proven wrong.

Showsomemercy – you are back?Welcome back!

Seriously speaking – Although I am a supporter of Barisan Rakyat, I would like to see 2 opposing strong political fronts in Malaysia to act as a check and balance.

BN, if not reformed may not provide a viable alternative.

BN and its component parties with its current leadership has little credibility.

However,if the leadership changes hands too fast to capable leaders of integrity,it may not allow the Barisan Rakyat to grow a little stronger than present.

Growing stronger by defections may be beneficial in the short term but brings with it many undesirable traits that may infect others within the BR.

Becoming stronger through more wins in by-elections and the next general elections is the better growth model.

Striving and enduring hardships to achieve success builds character for both the party and the individual candidates.

While it is good that many are still writing about what needs to be done, it takes time to get organised for the states for function well.

It is definitely more complicated than taking over a company (worse than a hostile take-over) and I am willing not to critique the new admins for 3 months.

Two good rewards they did quickly – the RM1 quit rent for places of worship in Selangor is good and also the amnesty for fines.
The idea of a foreign worker’s development fund to train locals is also a good concept.

    Still debating over Teng?

    As I said before;

    Country before party,

    Party before self.

Politicians who have the interest of the Rakyat in their hearts should not regard positions to be overly important.

I have the greatest admiration for Uncle Lim/Kit.
Are there anybody in DAP comparable to him?

Perhaps so, and if any, would only be a handful -Karpal Singh and Dr Chen Man Hin.

All 3 of them have stood the test of time and tribulations.

If there is one word to describe them,it is – unwavering.

Unwavering and comitted to thier ideals and vision through thick and thin.

So if DAP under the leadership of Uncle Lim has decided, I would believe it is a well thought of and sound decision.

    YB Lim.

i believe that this wonderful blog of yours ( besides raja petra’s ), have after the general election BEEN VERY CAUTIOUS of what is and isnt to be commented. either i have been over zealous or i have been critical of the party DAP that i support. it is either “awaiting moderating” even if i type in the word moderate.

you have answered my txt message to you, thanks for that and you can also refresh the archive, to view what i have wrote before.

unless, foul words are used, unless we goes against the constitution, and unless we abuse the rights of others race and religion, i sincerely hope you can tolerate some form of disagreement with your ideas and ideals.

there are always two sides to a coin. example in the support of teng or not agreeing to waiving the summons. BUT MOST OF US BELIEVE IN FIGHTING AND ERADICATING CORRUPTION. WE SUPPORT YOUR CAUSE TO RELEASE THOSE DETAINED HINDRAF LEADERS. WE SUPPORT YOUR CAUSE THAT NEP BENEFITS ONLY THE WELL CONNECTED AND THUS A REVIEW AND REVISED.

i am really sick and tired by the premier pointing fingers to every directions EXCEPT himself. much of which i advocate to his lack of leadership skill and management ability.

even zaid ibrahim publicity stunt of announcing a proposal to apologise to Tun Salleh has been in put in ” cold storage “. so this is pak lah adminstration. slow and slower.

even ( it will never happen ) that paklah appoints yb lim as a minister together with karpal singh and tony pua, it is still the same weak ,undecisive abdullah badawi that cause the raayat to be unhappy. provide the premier with the best management team, he still cannot decide.

what is so difficult to release the 5 hindraf leaders ?

what is so difficult to accept that Tun Salleh deserved an apology and full benefits be given to him and the other judges?

what is so difficult to make aca accountable to parliament only?

to have denied bn two third majority is to me is a mistake. we should have denied bn being in the government. the next ballot box will raise the bar.

Whatever it is a shadow cabinet should be considered to ‘fill-up’ any gaps of the cabinet. Besides check & balance. Key word here: Competition, and a healthy one. The word challenge is not suitable.

I did say ZI move to apologize Tun SA was just PR work. As usual – become N-A-T-O. Wonder what’s the point to stay appointed as de facto law-ya minister. Now he criticise some of the century old laws just because it did not suit UMNO power hunger wolves. So, is this new broom or used-broom or just old-broom?

Yes I did write to malaysiakini that AAB needs more time in his second year but if you care to read my later blog entries, I have been quite critical of the government.

As for missing files, I am no computer genius but I think there are computer experts who can recover data from deleted files.
Also any questionable dealings can be disowned by the new admins and people who have such agreements must produce the documents signed by the previous admin to file a law suit if they want to.

Furthermore wrt AAB, he was not willing or able to rock the BN applecart but the new admins are racing with time as it is only a 5-year window that they have.

The IPCMC must be implemented for the sake of at least public safety.Today’s SUN carried another shocking news about a senior police officer in the Klang valley held for graft. This scum was detained by the ACA for allegedly accepting RM75,000 as an inducement not to take action against a car theft syndicate mastermind. No wonder we always drive in fear of becoming the next victim of car hijack cum robbery. No wonder there are police officers living a lifestyle beyond their legitimate incomes.

YB LKS,please act now to help to get rid of the most hated public
law enforcers, there are none other than the corrupted police officers.Let us spit and throw shit at them just to vent our anger.
