RM70 m Brickendonbury Sports complex – bury idea and probe why RM2 million wasted

Now that the British East Herts Council had rejected the Malaysian government’s application to establish a RM70 million Sports High-Performance Training Centre (HPTC) at the Tun Abdul Razak Research Centre (TARRC) in Brickendonbury outside London, the siren proposal to appeal against the decision must be decisively resisted and struck down.

The Cabinet next Wednesday should just bury the idea of the RM70 million Brickendonbury Sports HPTC and establish an inquiry to ascertain who were responsible for the folly of wasting RM2 million in pursuing the project and who had really benefited.

The Council had publicly said that the Malaysian government had been consistently advised of the constraints in developing the Brickendonbury site due to the Green Belt policy, the site’s remoteness, the listed mansion and the historic park land. The Council had been doubtful about how outdoor sports facilities would assimilate satisfactorily and be accommodated within the historic garden landscape.

Why then was the Sports Minister, Datuk Azalina Othman and the Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Razak as Chairman of the Cabinet Committee on Sports, so stubborn in ignoring these objections to the extent of throwing RM2 million of public funds down the drain, when good governance and good sense would have advised against it?

The Brickendonbury Sports complex, originally costed at about RM490 million but later scaled down and projected to cost RM70 million, should be an object lesson as to how public funds should not be misspent and wasted.

    YB Mr Lim,
This stubborness must have something to do with commissions since a percentage can be garnered for some reasons or other like they did to the various mega projects under the various ministries. This is one for the Youth and Sports.

  2. #2 by k1980 on Friday, 16 November 2007 - 6:02 pm

To the PM, RM 2million is kacang saja. By increasing the price of petrol by 5osen alitre, he would be able to recover that RM 2million in a matter of minutes. Just like throwing away RM90 million to enable a village bum to tour space

  3. #3 by grace on Friday, 16 November 2007 - 6:13 pm

The Government do not know how to spend the millions?
Instead of doing for the benefit of the rakyat, they prefer to spend it in far away place like Russia(sending a space tourist) or England.
These projects bebefit no one except the cronies.
Thank God, the project is rejected. The British Government is to be praised!!!

Another case of abuse and mismanagement of the nation’s finance. There are too many of such sad and stupid stories happening in this country and it is a norm now.

That is how the local as well as the foreigners look at the government leaders and people of this country. Too bad. As ususal there will rhetorics to justify the wastages.

Saya menyokong Ronniu bukan disebabkan saya menyokong DAP.

Pernah saya bangkitkan nama Ronnie kpd Guan Eng. Guan Eng juga menyanjung semangat Ronnie and kefasihan beliau sebagai seorang multi lingua. ”

    HIDUP RONNIE LIU !

    HIDUP RONNIE LIU !

    HIDUP RONNIE LIU !

    HIDUP RONNIE LIU !

    HIDUP RONNIE LIU !

    HIDUP RONNIE LIU !

    HIDUP RONNIE LIU !

Why make so much noise about a tiny sum of RM2 million? Not even enough to build a palatial mansion like ‘bang Zakaria or to buy a Ferrari. Voters must understand the needs of elected Umnoputras, who have to have gaya to represent voters. Tsk, tsk.

I am really sad to the point of crying because our country has come to this pathetic state.

It is totally illogical and insane to say the least to have a Malaysian sports center outside of Malaysia. What purpose does it serve? None that I could think of.

Why do we need to send our sportsmen to Britain when the facilities here are just as good?

    This is total madness!!!

Wouldn’t the cost of training increase exponentially with the high currency rate and living standards of Britain?

Let’s be frank about this matter. It is nothing but a daylight robbery about to happen. People who initiate this idea has only one thing in mind – $$$$$$$$$$

I dare bet till my last underwear that IF, IF the sports center in Britain materialized, it would cost a bomb!! At least 500 million hard earned Malaysian ringgit.

An eventually it will become a god-damned white elephant.

So in the end, who benefits?

You know , I know larrrrrr!!!!!!!

STOP STEALING OUR MONEY YOU SHAMELESS, IMMORAL, GREEDY MINISTERS!!!!!!!

The govt thinks that everybody has a price.
This episode reflects the govt’s despicable lack of respect for community planning as seen in Malaysia. They won’t hesitate to build intrusive structures in the playgrounds or enchroaching on forest reserves, or cutting down age-old landmark trees in towns across the country. They think that it can do likewise in other countries with total disregard for the interest of other communities.

It must have been more than 2 years ago when none other than Sekhar Mr. Rubber of Malaysia has said publicly that a sport complex cannot be put up at the Tun Abdul Razak Research Centre and he should know having been Director of RRI for a long time and closely associated with Tun Razak Research Centre. And yet this Azalina l…… kept at it for the last 3 years in spite of protests from public, wasting public money along the way.
Why? In spite all the valid and powerful reasons put up by citizen Nades Azalina persisted. There could only be 1 reason ie she wants big projects as well for her ministry. After all not like other

DPM Najib should have engaged the powerful American Jewish Lobby to get the project approved. Just spend more millions, the Jewish Lobby (JL) is very influential in US & Europe, and for that matter in the whole world.

If Najib does not spend the budget for the project yet, he will not let up. Instead of wasting more unnecessary money on getting the approval from the Council, JL will be sure bet.

    Bloomberg 14 Nov :
Multiracial Malaysia gives ethnic Malays preferential treatment in government contracts, housing and company ownership. Malaysian ministers rejected Rommel’s comments in June that these policies have resulted in protectionism in areas including automobiles, agriculture and services. Only Pakistan and Japan have signed bilateral trade accords with Malaysia.

How much is the running of TARRC costing Malaysia annually? Why does Malaysia need a rubber research facility in the UK? And why does it need to be located by a listed mansion, with a staff of almost 100 people, with probably substantial annual running expenses? Why can’t such facilities by located in Malaysia, what are the advantages of NOT having such facilities closer to their source?
