One consequence of the choice people like Namewee makes is that he will be liked by some, even hero worshiped and disliked by others and made an enemy of the state even by others. If those who dislike him are in positions of power and are prepared use that power to punish him for the choices he makes, then it should be seen as a consequence of the choice he makes. No one forces him to make such choices.

Bob Dylan in the 60s used his songs to make his political statement. His songs were about racial sufferings etc. In a country which values freedom of speech above everything else, Bod Dylan and those like him rose to be an icon in their chosen field.

Today it is rap music. At one time it was rock music.

In Malaysia, to make a political statement through music and songs is a choice that carries with it potentially grave consequences to the singer and his or her family especially when that message accuses the ruling regime of serious wrongdoings and injustice to one particular ethnic group. One can only hope that Namewee is aware that there are consequences to his choice or choices.

We all make choices everyday. There are consequences to those choices we make for ourselves.

Is Namewee prepared to face the consequences of his choice? It appears so now that he has come out with another song. The rest of us must respect the choices he makes just like we expect the same for the choices we make.

Malaysia has NO corruption, get it? It happens only in some 3rd world country, not here. Also, our police NEVER take bribes, how dare someone sings about it, it hurts you know. About Chinese going to foreign universities? Those greedy foreign countries “stealing” our brains, but is ok, we have lots of brains, we can afford to be generous with our human capital. What garbage Wee just rap! Lets keep him in jail for 3 years, and pass the law that only “positive” remarks can ever be made, as our government is the best one around, how dare anyone says anything so …. true about them!!!

Chinese has a saying, “to kill a chicken, you dont use the same knife that you use to kill the cow”. Also, another saying: “to teach monkeys a lesson, kill a chicken.”

Some of these “leaders” are zooming in on this timely event to drive home a message to us all: “Do not say anything that doesnt sound nice, especially if it has some degree of truth.” What can we ordinary Malaysian do? You will surely have your way.

One more Chinese saying, (those in power can) “point to a deer and call it horse” and you have to accept it is a horse if you want your life.

Lets get Wee into jail. Strip of his nationality… where are your priorities, leaders? Alarming crimes – ok la, not too bad…many countries worse than ours. Government inefficiencies – not true what, they are improving… corruption? where got, we are clean country…. Unfairness? Impossible, we are all equal and we are fair to all…

OK, it is a horse, not a deer.

Anyway, like Wee’s parents, I am holding my breathe. I am concerned about what is going to happen next. If he gets punishment bigger than his “crime”, I am leaving.

Selective ommision to sensationalise news eh? And they also forgot in the same song he hentam why chinese in kl all speak cantonese but don’t speak their own mother tongue, and also hentam singaporeans and equate mao tze dong to lee kuan yew. No wonder The Straits Times have a vendetta against him eh. They’re no better than NST and The Star by selectively omitting relevant sections of the song.

PROVOCATIVE Malaysian rapper Wee Meng Chee has riled his countrymen again with a new song which hits out at Malays for being lazy and backward, the Harian Metro newspaper reported yesterday.

Titled Kawanku/My Friends, its lyrics are a blend of Mandarin, Malay and English, with the Malay portion of the rap translated as: ‘Talk some more lah/Chinese go back to China/If all go back ah/This would not be Malaysia/I fear where you will find work/But it’s usual lah Malays also don’t like to work/All go into the jungle/Live like Sakai.’

‘Sakai’ is what Malaysians call primitive people.

The rap ends with: ‘But this is my true feeling/It’s already been 50 years/Sleeping every day/Look forward lah/2020.’ 2020 is an apparent reference to Malaysia’s vision of becoming a developed nation by 2020.

The four-minute rap and Mr Wee’s earlier parody of Malaysia’s national anthem are on a possibly pirated CD titled Pasar Malam Chart Hits which costs RM7 (S$3). Checks by local media on Friday showed at least one shopping complex here was selling it.

The Taiwan-based Wee, 24, had apologised last week for hurting Malaysians’ feelings with his 5-1/2-minute rap parody Negarakuku, which has been airing on YouTube since last month and pokes fun at corrupt cops and lazy civil servants, among others.

Amid angry letters in the forum pages of Malay papers on his raps, yesterday’s New Straits Times quoted Foreign Minister Syed Hamid Albar as saying that Mr Wee will not be stripped of his citizenship because to do so would be ‘to act emotionally, not rationally’.

Given todays circumstances there are good reasons to have it resuscitated.

On this “mencapai perpaduan yang lebih erat di kalangan seluruh
masyarakatnya”, how can the government ever hope to achieve this when there is so called “bumiputera privileges”. How can you achieve unity in a society which has been “divided” by the government itself. This is a situation similar to the “Caste system” in India.

“Memelihara satu cara hidup demokratik” is nothing but a mirage. How democratic is the BN government if they insist on maintaining the use of the ISA?

“Mencipta satu masyarakat adil di mana kemakmuran Negara
akan dapat dinikmati bersama secara adil dan saksama” – Just what is “adil”, the BN government should issue free dictionaries to all its MP’s to make them look up the meaning of “adil” and what is this jazz about sharing the prosperity of the Nation fairly and equally. Look at what the government did when Petronas was incorporated. It transferred the nation’s wealth (petroleum) to a group of cronies to allow them to enjoy exclusive rights.

“Menjamin satu cara liberal terhadap tradisi-tradisi
kebudayaannya yang kaya dan berbagai corak” – This is a big joke. The “kompang” of the Malays can be beaten at any time without any restrictions but look at the lion dance of the Chinese. You need to apply for permits to hold a lion dance. Aren’t these two at par as far as cultural traditions are concerned?

A good look at the above will tell you that the “Rukunegara”, although in existence for centuries has not been utilized or followed by the government who formulated it. The Rukunegara is no essay of any primary or secondary student but was an official document of the government, formulated by the government and approved by the government itself. Wouldn’t this amount to “the one who formulated the law, broke it”? Why then take the trouble to formulate such a useless thing. Today, the Rukunegara has been totally forgotten but those who have been made to swear it under the hot sun during school assemblies those days would definitely not.

I don’t see how anyone could skyrocket himself to instant celebrity status in such a short period and at the cost of a song. Do you??

So while it lasts Namewee should enjoy his fifteen minutes of fame.

How can he “persuade” Meng Chee’s father to apologize on behalf of Meng Chee and then the government turns around and say that is not enough. I am sure there were terms and conditions applying to the “peace talk” and one of them must be that if Meng Chee apologized, he would not be sued.

This incident goes to show another scene of “the left hand chopping the right” when one side of the government disagrees with the other side of the government. So does that mean we have two “governments”?

Here is a tip to the PM: You let the bully beat you up once, they will come after you again. First your pocket money, then they will ask more and more until no one cares whether you are innocent or not…
